Construction Of Rail From Nigeria To Niger Republic, An Insult— Labour

“FG not building rail line into Niger Republic’ — Garba Shehu contradicts Amaechi The Trade Union Congress, TUC, Thursday, took a swipe at the Federal Government over the recent approval of $1.96 billion for the construction of a rail line from Kano-Katsina-Jibia to Maradi in Niger Republic. TUC, in a statement by its President, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Musa-Lawal Ozigi, in Abuja, said construction of a rail line to Niger Republic was an insult to Nigerians and a waste of scarce resources. The statement read: “The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has described the Federal Government’s approval for the construction of a rail line linking Nigeria to Niger Republic as an insult and waste of our scarce resources. “By this latest move, it has indeed become obvious to the world that the managers of our country have ulterior and sinister motives: to ruin this country. “The Congress is not averse to development. Constructing rail lines to Kano, Katsina and Dutse is understandable; but why extend it to Niger Republic? Why should we borrow from the IMF, World Bank and China to build a rail line to Niger Republic? “Is there something this government is not telling us? How could the Federal Government come up with such an idea in a country where potable water has become a luxury; right to electricity is regarded as a taboo for an average citizen, roads have become death traps and our health facilities lack malaria drugs? “That sum, $1.96 billion when exchanged at the rate of N380 per dollar, is almost N800 billion. This can do a lot in the economy. “The outbreak of the pandemic has exposed Nigeria to the world: our Federal Government was begging for ventilators and nose masks. “Our education sector is in a shambles. Agreements reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over a decade ago are yet to be met. “We are celebrating six decades of independence yet Ghana, South Africa, etc. are threatening and treating Nigerians in their country with disdain. It hurts. It really does! “According to a report from the Debt Management Office, Nigeria’s total debt rose to $79.5 billion (N28.63 trillion as of the first quarter of 2020). Debt servicing gulps trillions of naira yearly. “News had it that Nigeria’s sovereignty is at stake if the country fails to pay China! How could the Federal Executive Council, FEC, accept such now? Or, has the Niger Republic annexed Nigeria? “Government has not completed the road that connects Nigeria with other Western African countries yet the President Buhari-led administration approves construction of a rail line to Niger! “What is Nigeria paying for? Or, could this be another way of looting our commonwealth in preparation for the 2023 electioneering campaign? The whole thing is becoming more confusing. “Your Excellencies, there are many roads seeking attention throughout the country. The Lagos-Ibadan expressway services every vehicle coming into Lagos, including the ones from Kano, Katsina and Dutse; why has it not been completed? “The Niger Delta that lays the golden egg does not have good roads and potable water. They neither fish in their water nor go to the farm because of oil spillage. “Yes, it is true that the NDDC was supposed to provide most of the basics; unfortunately, the reverse is the case because of corruption. “Those appointed to manage the Commission ended up looting it dry. None is in jail because in the very first place it was a political settlement. “Since someone fainted during the National Assembly probe of the Commission, we have not heard anything again on the matter. “It is shameful it happened at a time our ‘incorruptible’ president holds sway. All we are saying is that Charity begins at home! This is not the time for profligacy and licentious spending; the government must manage our lean purse prudently. “We must set our priorities right because Nigeria is becoming a laughing stock to the whole world. Tinkering with such ideas at a time the electricity tariff has been increased and fuel price hiked is indeed suicidal. “Nigeria should stop playing big brother at the expense of Nigerians. This government is not being fair to Nigerians. Simple.” Meanwhile Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, says the federal government is not constructing a rail line into Niger Republic but to a designated border point. Shehu’s statement contradicts the one made by Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, who said the government had approved $1.96 billion for the construction of a rail line into Niger Republic. Speaking with journalists after a federal executive council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, Amaechi said the rail line would start from Kano and terminate at Maradi in Niger Republic. But on Twitter on Thursday, the presidential spokesman said both countries agreed to construct rail lines to meet at the border town of Maradi. “Nigeria isn’t building a rail line into Niger but, only to the designated Border point,” Shehu tweeted. “An agreement between Nigeria and Niger in 2015, coordinated by the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission for Cooperation has a plan for ‘Kano-Katsina-Maradi Corridor Master Plan, (K2M)’ as it is called. “Going by this, the two nations would each build a rail track to meet at the border town of Maradi. “Nigerian delegates to that meeting comprised officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Boundaries Commission, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Water Resources as well as those of Kano and Katsina states. “The objective of the rail is the harnessing of raw materials, mineral resources and agricultural produce. “When completed, it will serve domestic industries and play the role of a viable transportation backbone to the West African subregion, starting with the neighboring Niger Republic for their export and import logistic chain.”

Insecurity Threatens Nigeria’s Existence, Says Gbajabiamila

Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has stated that the current insecurity being experienced across the country is a potential threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence. He stated this yesterday in Abuja while declaring open a two-day retreat and workshop on promoting effective legislation and oversight of the security sector in Nigeria, organised by the House committee on national security and intelligence in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) foundation. He said: “We are, at this moment, experiencing in many parts of our country, significant internal security challenges that have disrupted the lives of many of our citizens, and led to a loss of lives and property at a scale that cannot easily be quantified. “These internal security challenges threaten the very existence of the Nigerian state because they undermine public faith in the government’s ability to fulfill its fundamental obligation to protect the lives and property of citizens.” According to the Speaker, in order to overcome the challenge of insecurity, all the three arms of government must jointly work together. “Across the three arms of government, we have a shared responsibility to take all necessary actions to meet these challenges head-on. This is what the people who elected us rightly expect. “National security is generally understood to be the preserve of the executive arm of government. As a result, the general public and even the political class often do not know what the legislative role in national security is, or ought to be. “This knowledge gap presents an ongoing limitation on the policy-making and oversight role of the legislature as it pertains specifically to the challenges we face in the national security sector. Workshops such as the one we have gathered here for today are an essential tool in reversing this gap,” the Speaker said. Gbajabiamila said the retreat should be “an opportunity to critically assess the legislative role in ensuring a safe and secure country for our children.” “The realities of the moment require that we be willing to speak honest truths about the things we haven’t gotten right so that we can then focus our energies on making sure that we do better for the future. “I encourage all of you to remember that a lot of the hopes we have for our country depend on our ability to guarantee the safety of our people and the security of property and investments. And from this remembrance, I hope we can find the motivation to do all that this moment requires of us. “Key followers of the House would notice that se-curity has been a very important part of our work. It’s part of our legislative agenda. When I came in, I visited three key states affected by insecurity. I went to Katsina, Borno and Zamfara. “We now have in our process the means of alternative funding for the security agencies. “I think we should have the roles of each security agencies clearly defined. It’s important that we understand the separation. “There’s no way you can have a government that thrives without security. Anything else relies on security. That’s why when this government came in, security was one of the legs,” the Speaker added. In an address, the chairman of the House committee on national security and intelligence, Rep. Sha’aban Sharada, said members of the committee were committed to seeing that all security agencies under them are provided with the necessary support to succeed in their mandate. He said the retreat could not have come at a better time than now due to the security challenges facing the country. Sharada noted that the committee is currently working on a bill on proliferation of small and light arms as part of efforts to tackle insecurity. He called on all security agencies to strengthen their efforts and that the citizens should give them the maximum support. He thanked the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Nigeria for their support. In a remark, the Resident Representative of KAS Nigeria, Dr. Vladimir Kreck, said his organisation has been partnering with different government institutions in Nigeria, including the House of Representatives, in the area of security to find lasting solutions to the challenges in the sector. He said his organisation’s partnership with the House was very critical in addressing security challenges in the country, hoping that such would yield fruitful results in the end. There were goodwill messages from the governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, who was the chairman of the committee in the 7th Assembly, and the Minister of FCT, Mohammed Musa Bello, both of whom were represented.

Looted Assets: Why I Won’t Testify Against Magu, By Malami

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) will no longer appear before the Justice Ayo Salami panel to testify against the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu. This is a departure from Malami’s earlier position to appear before the panel if invited. The minister hinged his non-appearance on the privileges of his office. Malami’s latest position was sequel to subpoena by Magu’s legal team led by Wahab Shittu demanding that he (Malami) appear before the panel to substantiate the allegations he preferred against the suspended EFCC boss. Malami had, however, written to the panel stating why he would not appear. It was learnt that during the sitting of the panel on Wednesday, Justice Salami read out a letter from Malami stating that he would no longer be able to appear before the panel. The minister, in the letter, informed the panel that he would not be able to appear before the investigative body because of the privileges of his office. Speaking further through his media aide, Dr. Umar Gwandu Malami, the minister said his non-appearance before the panel was purely constitutional and not based on any ulterior motive. Gwandu, in a statement, noted that the appearance or otherwise of the AGF and Minister of Justice, to serve as a witness in any investigation should be a constitutional matter. According to him, “In establishing propriety or otherwise of the presence of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice whose responsibility is to hold constitutional order, one must root same within the constitutional provisions. “The terms and wordings of invitation extended to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to Justice Ayo Panel of inquiry against Magu runs contrary to the Constitutional provisions. “The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice is, by the provision of the Constitution and extant laws, empowered to serve supervisory role. In the case of the EFCC, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been discharging the role effectively.” Reacting to the issue, a member of Magu’s team of lawyers, Tosin Ojaoma, said they were all shocked at the excuse Malami gave for non-appearance. According to him, “We were all gathered at the Presidential Villa for the day’s proceedings when Justice Salami read out a letter from the AGF. “The AGF stated that he would not be able to testify because his constitutional role does not include testifying. He said his duty was to prosecute and file charges. “I was shocked because Section 174 of the Constitution does not give the AGF such privileges. Isn’t it funny that the AGF who levelled a series of allegations against Magu is now refusing to substantiate the allegations that emanated from his office?”

Ekiti APC Suspends Fayemi

The State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has suspended Governor Kayode Fayemi. According to a statement released by the party on Friday, the governor was suspended due to “his numerous anti-party activities, especially his role in the recently concluded governorship election in Edo State which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC Constitution.” The party claimed that five days before the Edo Election, Governor Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode in the Government House I Ado Ekiti and planned a coup against Edo APC. Another allegation leveled against Governor Fayemi by the party was that he played a role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo State and supported the PDP candidate to defeat the APC candidate. See Full Statement by the party below… RE: DR. KAYODE FAYEMI ANTI – PARTY ACTIVITIES. After painstakingly reviewing the activities of some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, we the authentic members of the Party in the State and Members of State Executive Committee per Section 12.8 of APC Constitution being duly constituted members of the National Convention of the Party, rose from its meeting of the 23rd September 2020 and resolved as follows: We note the continued illegalities in the name of the party, being conducted by Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who as Governor is an ordinary member of the SEC and ought to have called meetings of this duly constituted body as a critical party organ, has failed to do so since his assumption of office in 2018. That the body currently masquerading as the elected members of the SEC or as the State Working Committee or appendages is unknown to us (as due statutory members of SEC) since no Ward Congress has taken place in Ekiti State APC since inception. All the SEC members listed in Section 12.8 of our constitution, (i) to (xxvii) as such are open positions since only duly officiated Ward congresses with INEC observation can fill these positions. As such, only the duly elected members of the APC in the state serving as Governor, Deputy Governor, Speaker & Deputy Speaker as well as Principal Officers of the House and Members of the National Convention which includes all present and past National Assembly members today constitute the State SEC of our great party. To this end, in the absence of a properly organized body and meeting, and the continued insistence of the Governor to neglect his duty to initiate Ward Congresses or call a meeting of the SEC to deliberate upon pertinent issues, we as loyal members of our party and members of the State Executive Committee met to rescue our party from continued denigration and abuse, and resolved thus: a.That Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State is hereby suspended from the Party in view of his numerous anti-party activities especially his role in the recent concluded governorship election in Edo State which is contrary to the provisions of Article 21 (A) (ii) of the APC Constitution. For five days prior to the Edo elections, Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Mr. Femi Fani- Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekiti in the run-up to the Edo elections. It was here they perfected the coup against our party in Edo State. This is the same Fani-Kayode who daily abuses President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the APC as a party as well a vital section of our country. We have evidence of that meeting. Fani-Kayode specifically said he has gone on his tour as part of an effort between him and Fayemi to build a cross-party alliance and few hours after leaving Ekiti he fired a shot at Asiwaju Tinubu. 1 (a) We also have evidence of celebration by his aides in the Ekiti government house and on social media. 1(b) We also recall his role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo State where he supported the PDP candidate to defeat the APC candidate. A second tranche of money he sent to Gov Makinde in the election was intercepted by soldiers. The courier Mr Ayo Adegbite, his Chief Protocol Officer was arrested and he immediately disowned and announced his sack. Mr. Adegbite remains his aide till date. 1(c) We also recall the support he provided a PDP candidate who challenged an APC Senator Prince Dayo Adeyeye in the Tribunal. He moved the judges to Kaduna to deliver judgement when he knew what he planned against his party was unpopular in Ekiti. We have more to tell on this betrayal and traitorous act of his. APC Senator is out of the Senate today and PDP is in. The relationship between Fayemi and Senator Olujimi of PDP, the beneficiary of his treachery is known to all in Ekiti State. We also recall his resort to court when the majority of party members nominated late Senator Abiola Ajimobi for Deputy National Chairman of the party. He fought Ajimobi till death. 1(d) His fraternisation with the PDP in continuation of his bid for Vice Presidential candidate under the party ( if his bid for Presidential candidate in APC fails ) was masked by the commissioning of projects in Rivers State, a smokescreen for his consultation to woo the support of Governor Nyesom Wike last year. 2.That the Paul Omotosho led faction of APC Executive in the State is hereby declared illegal and suspended from the Party for failure to emerge in accordance to the Constitution of the Party. 3.That Paul Omotoso and his co-travellers’ refusal to respect court proceedings in which they are not only joined but appeared in court through the proceedings but defiantly disrespected the court contrary to the hallowed decision of the Supreme Court in OJUKWU vs GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE 4.That Paul Omotosho faction of the executive should desist from parading themselves as the Executive Members of the Party in the State and that the Nigerian Police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the

Mali transition president Ndaw sworn in

Mali’ s interim president , Bah Ndaw, chosen to head a transitional government following a coup last month, was sworn in during ceremonies in the capital Bamako on Friday, AFP journalists witnessed. A committee appointed by the junta which seized power on August 18, toppling president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita , selected Ndaw , a 70- year -old retired colonel , as interim president . Ndaw is due to lead a transition government for a maximum of 18 months before organising national elections . Colonel Assimi Goita , who led the military junta, was also sworn in as interim vice president . The ceremony on Friday took place in a theatre filled with officials dressed in military fatigues , senior judges , and foreign diplomats . During the ceremony , Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor Boya Dembele said the challenges facing both men were “ enormous ” . “ It will truly require a reformulation of the state, ” said the judge, dressed in red fur- lined robes . The swearing- in comes as the fragile Sahel state’ s neighbours have leaned on the military junta to appoint civilians as interim president and prime minister. The 15- nation Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) slapped sanctions on the poor country on August 20 to push for a swift return to civilian rule . A decision by the bloc on whether to ease the measure is possible on Friday, according to former Nigerian president and ECOWAS mediator Goodluck Jonathan . “ We are optimistic that this event will signal the beginning of the return to normalcy in Mali, ” he said on Twitter on Thursday night, referring to the swearing in of interim -government leaders . Last month’ s coup followed weeks of mass protests against Keita, spurred by frustrations over a brutal jihadist conflict , perceived corruption and the country’ s slumping economy . Mali has struggled to quell an eight-year – old Islamist insurgency which has claimed thousands of military and civilian lives . AFP

Obaseki free to return to APC,But… -Wike

Obaseki visits Buhari, says it will be immoral to return to APC Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Wike , says Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State , who was recently re – elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, is free to return to the All Progressives Congress if he feels the PDP is not working for him . Wike , however , said the Edo State governor must never forget that he was given an umbrella when he was left in the rain. The Rivers State governor said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Friday. When asked what he would do if Obaseki left the PDP , Wike said , “ I don’ t want to discuss something that is not going to be possible . However , assuming it happens , so what ? That is politics. “ If the governor believes that the PDP is no longer a party for him to actualise his vision and his mission, there is nothing wrong but I don’ t believe that it is going to happen because the governor has consistently told us that there is no way he will leave the PDP. If he leaves the PDP, people in Edo State will not be happy . “ And he is somebody I have that trust in that he will not leave the party. This is a party that clothed him . This is a party that when it was raining , gave him an umbrella. ” Wike said he did not play such a big role in Obaseki’ s re -election but only acted as the chairman of the campaign council . He said he merely supervised the campaign , presented strategies and gave guidance . The governor said it would be wrong of anyone to give him the glory when others like Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Delta State Governor , Ifeanyi Okowa , played their roles . Wike stated that he did not fund Obaseki ’ s campaign because the governor already had enough money to execute his campaign. “ What resources could I have deployed ? He is a sitting governor . What resources can I give him that he does not have?” he asked . Also Edo State Governor , Godwin Obaseki, on Friday met with the President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa , Abuja . The governor however told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that it would be immoral for him to return to the All Progressives Congress. Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party beat Osagie Ize -Iyamu of Buhari’ s All Progressives Congress and others to win the last Saturday’ s governorship election in his state. He had dumped the APC for the PDP when the ruling party disqualified him from participating in its primary election . There have been concerns that having won the election on the platform of the PDP , he might return to the APC. But the governor who met with the President alongside his deputy , Philip Shuaibu , said it would be immoral to do so . Obaseki and Shuaibu were joined on what they called the “ thank you visit” to Buhari by their spouses and some lawmakers from the state.

Tiv/Jukun conflicts: Gov. Ishaku urges fleeing communities to return home

Gov. Darius Ishaku of Taraba has called on the people of Chonku village who had fled to Wukari town in the wake of the Tiv/Jukun crisis to return home and resume their normal activities, saying peace has returned to the area. Ishaku made the call while laying the foundation of a Military and Police base at the Chonku village. He said that the State Government would establish a security base on the border between Taraba and Benue. He said the security base would provide security to the village which shared a common border with Benue. The governor said it was very unfortunate that the two border communities had continued to engage themselves in violent clashes instead of living in peace. He said his administration was doing its best to address insecurity and communal crisis in all parts of the state. “I call on the good people of Chonku to please come back to your town and resume your normal activities,” he said. “I want to assure you that adequate security will be provided to you by the military and the police to enable you to return home and go about your normal activities without fear of attack. He said facilities such as healthcare centres, markets and boreholes would also be provided to improve their living conditions. ” Both Taraba and Benue states need peace and the people should be encouraged to coexist peacefully,” Ishaku said. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that conflicts between the Jukun and Tiv ethnic groups had resulted to the razing down of the entire Chonku town earlier in the year, forcing the residents to flee to Wukari, headquarters of Wukari Local Government Area of the state. 60th Anniversary: Nigerians score Buhari government high on implementation of 9-Point Agenda

As Nigeria celebrates its 60th Independence, Nigerians have scored the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration high in rescuing the country from precipice of destruction. A cross section of Nigerians in the Southwest states and Kwara assessed the administration based on its nine-point agenda. They said that the government’s sincerity of purpose was evident in the giant strides of provision of infrastructure including roads, housing, rail system of transportation, schools and hospitals. The respondents, however, urged the government to spend the remaining three years of the administration to tackle unemployment, revive the economy and combat insurgency and other security challenges facing the country. Mr Abayomi Arabambi, the Chairman, Labour Party in Ogun, said that the priority areas as highlighted by the Buhari government had proved the focus and competence of the government in convincing the citizenry that it had sufficient and adequate ability to build a thriving and sustainable economy. Arabambi said that the nine points agenda would enhance social inclusion and reduce poverty and also pave way for enlargement of agricultural output for food security and export. The labour party chieftain noted that the nine priority areas identified by present administration to guide its policies over the next few years in its drive to enhance national development was a step to build a thriving and sustainable economy. He said that the Buhari government had been able to engage a very large percentage of unemployed youths in various arms of self-employment including sectors in various agricultural operation and investments. “The truth is that all of the priority areas are very much inter- dependent and very highly complimenting each other. “Today, even youths are proud owners of large farms and recognised employers of labour. “In every worthwhile assessment of the capability of this government, it has come up convincingly to let the unbiased critic see that the tilt of good governance of this government is in the positive and in the altitude,” he said. He appealed to the president to continue building a system that would continue to fight corruption, expand access to quality education and provide affordable healthcare services. “Currently, a lot of visible and verifiable great work has been done by the Buhari-led government to correct the corruption – induced mal-administered power projects in the country and very many other projects. “In a fair and reasonable consideration of the national standard in governance of this country, it is not in doubt that in every sector, the current Federal Government has outclassed the performances of any previous governments. Also speaking on the nine priority areas identified by the government, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, the National Public Relations Officer, National Association of Nigerian Students, said that sincerity of purpose should come first on the list. Adeyemi listed security, agriculture and corruption as the critical areas the government should channel its resources. He said that the insecurity situation in some parts of the country needed urgent attention of the government, saying that lives and property were at risk in such areas. He said that the Nigerian security system needed complete overhaul, saying that government should intensify efforts in shaping the security system to curtail the excesses of kidnapping, banditry, and other inhumane vices. He also called on the present administration to take agriculture serious with the provisions of basic agricultural inputs and encourage youths to participation in the sector. Adeyemi said that corruption had continued to be a major obstacle hindering the growth and development of the nation. “The government should focus more on the processes that lead to corruption rather than waiting for a leader to be pronounced corrupt after terms of office. Also, Mr Sunday Bamidele, a sociologist, scored the administration of Buhari high in the areas of transport and infrastructural development. Bamidele, who spoke with NAN in Akure, described the development of the railway system as a very significant landmark which could not be wished away by anybody. He said that the present administration met a moribund railway system and a very bad road network which had had been neglected by successive administrations. The sociologist, who commended Buhari for bringing the Abuja-Kaduna railway to life said “this alone has brought ease and comfort to people travelling on that axis on daily basi. “Modern trains, which are of standard gauge with executive coaches, now convey passengers on this route to make the journey stress-free. “Different road projects have been concluded while some are ongoing. Reconstruction of the inherited Niger bridge project at Onitsha in Anambra state has been embarked upon, and work has never stopped on the project. “To add another feather to the cap of his administration is the ongoing rail transport system between Lagos and lbadan which is to be commissioned towards the end of this year,” he said. Bamidele, however, noted that the government had not done enough in the area of security. “The government needs to rise up to its responsibilities by reinforcing the security system of the country so that we can sleep with our two eyes closed,” Bamidele said Mr Temitope Fakuade, the Deputy Director, Planning, Ondo State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, said the success of the nine-point agenda of the government depends on the political will of the current administration to see the plans come through. Fakuade said that successive administration had initiated many plans in the past but the challenge was with the execution. According to him, result based monitoring and evaluation mechanism should be put in place to ensure that everything is done right from the conceptualisation of idea to execution stage to achieve result from the agenda, Dr Michael Oke of the Department of Banking and Finance, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, however, expressed concern that the nine-point agenda of the Federal Government might not see the light of the day. Oke said that many national agenda had been hatched in the past without fulfilling their aims and objectives. He identified inconsistency and insincerity of purpose as causes of failure of the government in the series of national growth plans.

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan on Friday, dissolved the marriage between two school teachers, John Fawole and his wife, Mary, over battery and threat to life Delivering judgment, Chief Ademola Odunade, who granted Mary’s application for the dissolution, the two avoid confrontation with each other in the future. Mary, who lives in Kolapo Isola-Genral Gas area in Ibadan, filed for divorce on grounds of battery and threat to life. He gave his consent for the divorce. Fawole also accused his mother-in-law of having a hand in the collapse of his marriage. “Rather than ensure that our relationship remained solid, her mother created disharmony in our home. “My wife and I had two children, but she killed them by taking them to a quack doctor who gave them fake drugs when they were sick. “I have been a good husband and father all along, but her mother is a devil incarnate who never allowed our marriage to work,” he said.(NAN)

RULAAC petitions IGP over alleged intimidation of poor couple by Imo police

The Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Centre(RULAAC)Thursday wrote to Inspector General of Police (IGP)over alleged intimidation by the Ehime Mbano police division in Imo state over land dispute. RULAAC requests the IGP to order a prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the complaint of alleged bribery, injustice and the use of Court processes by the Divisional Police Officer, Ehime Mbano Police Station to intimidate an old couple. Crimefacts.news reported earlier how Operatives of the Nigeria Police in Ehime Mbano police division Imo state allegedly detained poor Couple over land issue. The petition was signed and made available to Crimefacts.News by the group’s Executive director,Okechukwu Nwanguma. The statements read in full,” This case involving a poor couple (Mr Paul and Mrs Nnenna Osuji) at Ehime Mbano, illustrates the level of abuse of power and impunity by the DPO and his officers in the rural Mbano community and the suffering and oppression that people dwelling in the rural community are subjected to by the DPO and his police officers. It also shows how unprotected rural dwellers are from police harassment, intimidation and exploitation.” “RULAAC decided to address this petition to your office because we had earlier forwarded the same complaint to the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command and the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Police Command on Saturday bringing this case to their attention but received no reply till date.” “We are informed as follows: That the victims Mr Paul and Mrs Nnenna Osuji are poor. They have no male children. Mr Osuji inherited lands in his family. His cousins, nephews and other relatives take the view that since he has no male children, he must relinquish to them the lands he has, desist from selling any of them and handing over, even the portions they currently farm for subsistence to other family members who have male children. Mr Osuji is still alive.” “2. On Friday, September 18 Mr Osuji received a message from the police inviting him to the Ehime Mbano Police Station. He got there on Saturday and they told him that he is being accused of forceable entry into one of the lands he has been in possession of for God knows how long and which they have asked him to relinquish because he has no male children. He was detained over what is not a criminal offence. His wife who came with him was also detained. Their children who also came to ask for their release were asked to go and get a male resident in Ehime Mbano as surety before they can be released. The police said they should also deposit the sum of N30,000.00 for bail. All the children are female and so ‘do not qualify as sureties’. We don’t know under what law the DPO based this decision.” “3. Upon receiving this information, we forwarded same to Imo CP and PPRO. Meanwhile, we tried to speak with the IPO but she refused to give out her phone number. Then we tried speaking to her through the phone of one of the daughters (Oluchi) still at the police station as at that evening. The IPO Precious Ukwu took the phone but pretended that the network was poor. She told Oluchi to go to the DPO whom she said was the only one who could take decision on the matter.” “4. Later, Oluchi informed us that they had found a male who can stand surety for their parents. Upon our further effort to speak to the IPO or any other officer at the station, the IPO insisted that anyone with an issue on this case should talk to the DPO and that the instruction to collect the money came from the DPO. We didn’t have the DPO’s number as at then and the IPO refused to give it out.” “5. We were later informed by one of the daughters that ‘they collected the total sum of N19 000 naria and warn me not to tell anybody but i told barrister johnson that very day as i coundn’t reach you again due to bad network.’ “6. Later, we obtained the DCO’s phone number and tried to call him to demand a refund of the bribe extorted, but it was switched off all day.’ “7. It is pertinent to emphasise that the couple received the invitation to the Police station before Friday September 18, 2020.
