How S’East Governors ‘sabotaged’ regional security architecture

When last May, the South-East Governors’ Forum rejected the template of the Inspector General of Police for Community Policing, the people of the region were hopeful that a regional security outfit was in the making. This was especially after the Forum had reportedly mandated governments of the five states in the zone to commence the process to their various Houses of Assembly with a bill that would give legal backing to the initiative. Recent events and the rampant altercations between traditional Rulers and some Local Council chairmen over who would nominate members of the security committee at the community level indicate that the governors of the South-East states have effectively settled for the federal Government’s Community Policing initiative. This put paid to the expectations of many residents of the South-East who had at various fora canvassed for their own regional security apparatus. The recent resignation of Prof. Uzodimma Nwala, the President of Alaigbo Development Foundation, from the South-East Security Committee raises more questions and more concerns for the people of the region, given Prof Nwala’s passion for the Igbo nation. In Prof. Uzodimma Nwala’s resignation letter dated 25 August 2020, addressed to Gen. Obi Abel Umahi (Rtd) and obtained by our correspondent, the varsity don revealed that the South-East Security Committee was jointly established in February 2020, in a meeting involving the South-East Governors’ Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Alaigbo Development Foundation. Our correspondent gathered further that the South-East Security Committee headed by Gen. Obi Abel Umahi had timeously concluded its work on a regional security architecture for the South-East, finalized details of the legal framework for the security apparatus and had submitted their recommendations to the South-East Governors’ Forum awaiting approval for implementation. The committee did not hear from the Forum until the recent embrace of the Community Policing initiative of the Inspector General of Police. By Nwala’s resignation, Alaigbo Development Foundation would have effectively pulled out of the South-East Security Committee for reasons he outlined in his resignation letter. The letter read in part: “I write to resign formally as a member of the South-East Security Committee which was set up at a Joint Meeting of the Governors Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) since February 2020. “I do this because the purpose for which this Security Committee was set up has been made null and void with the pronouncements of the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, abolishing the idea of a Regional Security Architecture for the South-East. “According to him, the Governors of the South East have jointly rejected the idea of a Regional Security Architecture for the entire South East and by extension, the entire Alaigbo.” Nwala argued that the fact that the ‘so-called South East Security Committee’ was set up since early 2020 and after several months nothing had been achieved, means that it was not intended to serve any useful purpose. He noted that Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) had compared the policy of Community Policing as equivalent to ‘handing over the security of chickens to the hawks’. The letter further read: “It is to be recalled that in a Press Statement issued by the ADF on February 2020, we had stated unequivocally that the “policing plan of the Nigerian Police has been in operation in the South-East while the horrors in several parts of Alaigbo including Ebonyi State as depicted in the Report of Chief Igariwey at the last Ime-Obi meeting as well as that depicted in the Report by Mr. Aduba (CP Rtd.) at the joint meeting of Ime-Obi and the Governors Forum, all those horrors rather than abating have been rising to crescendo with our helpless people wondering if they have any Government or leaders who care for their plight”. While noting that ADF is not in opposition to any workable security initiative of the Federal Government that will keep Igboland safe, Nwala stressed that “in opting out of the ‘now moribund’ South East Security Committee, ADF shall continue to work with the various pan-Igbo organizations to advance all possible and legitimate means of ensuring the Security of Alaigbo and her neighbors.” .Source: New Telegraph

Time To Move On – A Brief Note To Jonathan Supporters

By Inibehe Effiong Dear supporters of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, if you truly want to fight for a better Nigeria, fight for a better Nigeria on principle, not based on interest; do so dispassionately, not selectively. If you hate corruption, injustice and bad governance, it should not matter who is in power. It should not matter which region or religion a leader or politician comes from. It should not matter the political party that is in power. You are an accomplice if you only speak out when it is convenient for you, but remain silent when your favourite politician is in government. Some of us have been consistent in our criticisms. Some of us have been consistent in resisting tyranny irrespective of who is in power. People from my home State, Akwa Ibom, who hated me for constantly deprecating the evils of the Godswill Akpabio regime are now pretending to be his adversaries. Some of them wished me death in the past because of my opposition to Akpabio, but they started singing a different tune the moment Akpabio left the PDP for the APC. The people who defended Akpabio’s tyranny are now defending governor Udom Emmanuel’s tyranny. There is nothing that I criticized Akpabio for while he was a governor that Udom Emmanuel has replicated and I have not spoken out against. I do not care who the governor is. What I care about is what a governor does. There is nothing that Jonathan did while in office that I criticized him for, that has taken place under General Buhari and I kept mute. The same way that I opposed Jonathan’s misrule is the same way that I am opposing Buhari’s misrule. Those of you that are debating whose misrule is better or worse are just dissipating energy on frivolity. There is nothing like ‘a better bad president’. If we are ever going to change this country, we have to stop expressing preferences for certain categories of bad leaders. Mr. Jonathan, whose defeat you are still bitter about, is closer to Buhari today than most Buhari supporters. They have a common interest. Jonathan has moved on with his life but you are still bitter about 2015. You are taking sides against your fellow citizens in the name of partisanship. Those of you who are still obsessed with Jonathan’s defeat should remember that history is a judge. Most of you that are attacking people over their political views in 2015 were the most vociferous defenders of impunity, corruption and injustice under Jonathan. Many of you are still fervently rooting for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. How can you hate your regular citizens over their political decisions and views in 2015 and at the same time be defending the same Atiku whose money, influence and support along with Saraki, Amaechi, Kwankwaso, Tinubu and others propelled Buhari to power? People like Reno Omokri should not insult our intelligence by pretending to be activists or advocates for good governance. We know that if your favourite politicians were in control today of the federal government today, you will be doing exactly what Buhari supporters are doing, just like you did under Jonathan. The very fact that you are unwilling to admit the flaws of Jonathan’s government which largely caused his defeat says a lot about your sense of patriotism, character and false outrage. In any event, how many of you are willing to support a fresh presidential candidate who is not part of the rotten political establishment in 2023? You cannot be recycling thieves and expect some of us to take you seriously simply because your preferred thief steals less than another thief. If we truly want to change Nigeria, we must stop supporting people who have been part of the destruction of this country in the past. 2023 is far away, but many of you are already projecting the same corrupt and recycled politicians for the next round of presidential election. That is not how to change a country. The Buhari regime has declared war on the suffering masses. Buhari has imposed economic sanctions on Nigerians by implementing unconscionable austerity measures and policies at a time that responsible nation’s are introducing palliatives and social intervention programmes to cushion the harsh effects of COVID-19 pandemic. We cannot effectively hold this oppressive, corrupt and incompetent regime accountable if citizens do not unite. Jonathan has since moved on, Atiku has ostensibly moved on after 2019 elections. It is time for you to move on. It is time to fight for a better Nigeria. inibehe.effiong@gmail.com Twitter: @InibeheEffiong

The refund was a relief hugely beneficial to the three tiers of government particularly for the payment of workers salaries, provision of welfare and some critical social infrastructure. “The Paris club refund came at a time when the Nation was on the throes of recession and severe economic downturn which helped the country to regain their fiscal balance as the huge amount of the refund came in tranches of billions of dollars. “His Malaria free Africa project also comes as a timely intervention which would certainly save millions of lives in Africa. These indelible imprints of positive significance are incontrovertible pointers to the fact that he ranks ‘primus inter pares’ amongst a rare breed of leaders who place fervid patriotism and altruistic humanism above every other consideration”. At least 100 armed bandits have been killed in various parts of the North West by troops of Operation Sahel Sanity in the last two months, the military has said. The Acting Director of Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General Benard Onyeuko, disclosed this on Saturday at a press briefing in Katsina State. Onyeuko revealed that during the series of search and rescue operations conducted between July 1 and September 4, troops rescued 107 kidnapped victims. He added that the soldiers arrested 148 suspected bandits and 315 illegal armed miners, as well as nabbed 20 bandits’ informants and collaborators, six arms suppliers, 13 rustled cattle marketers, and 32 bandits’ logistics suppliers. The military spokesman noted that 3,984 rustled cows, 1,627 sheep and rams, and three camels were recovered. He said a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered, including 43 AK47 rifles, one GPMG, and 100 Dane guns, among other weapons. According to him, 81 bandits’ camps, including the notorious Dangote Triangle and their logistics bases were destroyed by troops, while 74 bandit attacks and 54 kidnap incidents were foiled withing the period under review. Read the full text of Onyeuko’s briefing below: GENERAL UPDATE ON THE ACTIVITIES OPERATION SAHEL SANITY FROM 1 JULY – 4 SEPTEMBER 2020 Sequel to the official commencement of Operation Sahel Sanity in July 2020, as part of activities of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2020 at the Nigerian Army Special Super Camp IV Faskari in Katsina State, the Operation has in no small measure affected the economic life of the people of the north-west zone of the country positively. The operation was aimed at supporting Operation Hadarin Daji to stem the tide of the activities of armed bandits, cattle rustlers, kidnappers, incessant killings, and other sundry crimes in the zone. These acts of criminalities orchestrated by the bandits have been curbed and reduced to its lowest ebb, thanks to the relentless efforts of the troops of Operation Sahel Sanity. There is no gainsaying that the hitherto crippled agricultural, social and economic lives of the people of this zone by bandits’ activities have been restored to normalcy. The above assertion was corroborated during the visits of the Chairmen of the Committees on Army in the National Assembly, Executive Governors, and a host of prominent Traditional Rulers from the north-west zone of the country during their official visits to the Headquarters of Operation Sahel Sanity at the Nigerian Army Special Super Camp IV Faskari Katsina State from 7-14 August 2020. During the visits, they lauded the efforts of the Nigerian Army in their quest to rout out all forms of criminality in the zone. They attested to the fact that normal life has indeed returned to the zone as farming, economic and social life of the people are being carried out without any form of hindrance and molestation by criminal elements. The tremendous successes achieved since the operation started could not have been possible without the sacrifice, commitment, and gallantry exhibited by the professional soldiers of the Nigerian Army, some of whom have paid the supreme price within the period under review. The gallant troops of Operation Sahel Sanity, within this period, carried out a series of clearance operations, ambushes, and other aggressive and confidence-building patrols. Also, farm and highway patrols were carried out within Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, thus boosting the confidence of the people in carrying out their daily activities. These operations have most importantly led to the rescue of kidnapped victims, recovery of rustled cattle, the arrest of suspected armed bandits and their collaborators, smashing of local and international illegal arms syndicates and illegal armed miners. Furthermore, there were recoveries of a large cache of arms and ammunition, as well as recovery of motorcycles and dislocation of bandits’ logistics network within the period. So far, in all the operations conducted, 100 armed bandits were neutralised, a total of 3,984 cows, 1,627 sheep/rams, and three camels recovered, 148 suspected bandits, and 315 illegal armed miners were arrested. Furthermore, a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered, which include 43 AK47 rifles, one GPMG and 100 Dane guns, 3,261 rounds of 7.62mm (special), and 151 live cartridges of ammunition. In all the search and rescue operations carried out, 107 kidnapped victims were rescued, 20 bandits informants and collaborators, six arms suppliers, 13 rustled cattle marketers, and 32 bandits logistics suppliers were arrested. Also, a total of 81 bandits’ camps, including the notorious Dangote Triangle and their logistics bases were destroyed by troops of Operation Sahel Sanity. Relatedly, 74 bandit attacks and 54 kidnap incidents were foiled by the troops. IMO APC BY-ELECTION: Why we declared Ararume winner-Electoral Panel Member

Three members of the Primary Election Committee set up by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Imo North Senatorial by- election have said that they declared Senator Araraume winner because the figures from the field on the day of the Primaries showed that he actually scored the highest number of votes. The members of the Electoral Panel who stated this were: Alhaji Umar Nguma, Mohammed Saliu and Prince Ifedi Ejim. The trio had come to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja where they submitted the report of the Primaries which they conducted in the 64 Wards in Imo Senatorial District. Addressing Journalists at the APC headquarters, Nguma said it was shocking that people could concoct figures and ask the Primary Election Committee members to sign declaring a certain favoured aspirant winner. He said that as a good Muslim, he would never collect gratification to endorse falsehood. “How could we declare somebody who failed winner simply because he was being supported by two powerful people in Government?”, he queries” . Nguma added that it was very clear that Araraume was the choice of the people and that it would be inhuman to deny him victory when he had actually won the Primaries based on the figures from the field. He warned that democracy would be in danger if Political Parties allowed powerful people to be writing results in hotels and Government houses only to turn around to force those saddled with the conduct of elections to append their signatures to fake figures. Nguma said that he and his two other colleagues had performed the duty assigned to them and that it was up to the Party to take a decision on the way forward. While the Nguma-led Group announced Senator Araraume winner of the APC Primaries, another set led by Senator Ajibola Bashir declared Frank Ibezim winner. The APC leadership is expected to take a decision on who finally gets the ticket.

OPINION: Buhari’s Growing Cruelty Reflects the Wishes of Nigerians

By Farooq A. Kperogi The All Progressives Congress (APC) subsists on lies and deceit, like its twin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but the party told a fundamental truth on September 2 when it said in a statement, according to the Sun, that Buhari’s “hiked petrol price, electricity tariff reflect [the] wishes of [the] citizenry.” This may come across as a bit counter-intuitive, but there is no greater testimonial endorsement of the claim that Buhari’s steep, sudden hikes in the prices of commodities, which have made Nigeria a snake pit of infernal cruelty, reflect the wishes of Nigerians than the fact that there have been no protests against the policies. From the 1960s until Buhari ascended to the presidency, every hike in petrol price had been greeted with massive protests. But not only have there been no protests against Buhari’s punishing petrol price hikes, a whole lot of people in the North actually came out in 2016 to stage demonstrations in support of Buhari’s first petrol price increment and against opposition to it! In 2012 when the Goodluck Jonathan administration arbitrarily hiked the pump price of petrol, I was the first to suggest an “Occupy Nigeria” strategy to force the government to reverse the hike. I didn’t anticipate that my suggestion would fly. But it did. It meshed with the self-interested political agendas of people who are now in government and ignited a massive social convulsion. Four years later in 2016, I made the same appeal. But as I pointed out in my May 14, 2016 column titled, “Petrol Price Hike: Time to Occupy Nigeria Again,” the people and circumstances that conduced to the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protests had changed. “But I doubt that my appeal will resonate with many people this time around; President Buhari’s tight emotional grip on the northern and southwestern middle class would likely frustrate the formation of the kind of remarkably unexampled pan-Nigerian solidarity that confronted former President Jonathan,” I wrote. Well, sheepish acquiescence in the face of Buhari’s plot to transform Nigeria into one massive mass grave through thoughtless and callous hikes in the prices of everything that is essential to survival is proof that the APC is right to insist that Buhari’s morally objectionable suffocation of Nigeria reflects the wishes of Nigerians. I made these points four years ago, and I will repeat them because the circumstances warrant their repetition: Every responsible, socially sensitive government subsidizes essential commodities for its citizens. It is only Nigerian governments that interminably tell their citizens that they have no responsibility to make life a little easier for the people they govern. According to a January 3, 2012 TIME Magazine story titled “Petrol Politics: Why Nigerians Are Enraged Over the Rising Price of Gasoline,” America’s 50 states collectively spend $10 billion a year to subsidize the fuel consumption of their citizens. In America, with all its vast material prosperity, the surest way for any government to collapse irretrievably is to encourage any policy that causes the price of petrol to go up.  As TIME put it beautifully, “One of the fastest ways to alienate voters is to be seen supporting anything that intensifies pain in the pump.” It said, “politicians’ refusal to increase gas taxes in line with inflation and construction costs starves needed infrastructure of funding.” Sounds familiar? The recurrent excuse governments in Nigeria advance to increase fuel prices is that the government needs money for “infrastructural development.” But no sensible government starves its people to death because it wants to build infrastructure. Only the living use infrastructure. There is an instructive example in the Midwestern state of Iowa of how a caring government, faced with a cash crunch, responded to recommendations for an increase in petrol prices to raise money. I will reproduce parts of the story, which is from TIME, without authorial intervention: “In Iowa, which hasn’t raised its tax in 22 years, a citizen advisory panel recommended an 8 cent to 10 cent bump per gallon in November. Republican Gov. Terry Branstad quickly took any increase off the table, instead asking his Department of Transportation to look for savings. “‘Everyone realizes that we need more funding for roads and bridges,’ said Tim Albrecht, a spokesman for Branstad. ‘I don’t think the legislature was especially willing to put a burden on Iowa’s taxpayers at this time.’” Governments don’t save in Nigeria. All they do is raid the national treasury to subsidize their lavish lifestyles (and those of their cronies) and tell the masses of the people that they don’t deserve any subsidy. Nigeria isn’t poor because of the need of its people; it is in dire straits because of the greed of its elites. But everyday Nigerians who feel the pinch of the cruelty of their elites would rather expend their energies to fight for God than fight for themselves. The same Nigerians who fly into a tempestuous holy rage and demand the blood of their fellow humans when their God is “blasphemed” are asking for their God’s intervention— instead of acting— now that Buhari is determined to kill them piecemeal through cruel hikes in the prices of everything essential to their existence. They kill fellow humans in defense of their God but ask God to defend them against an oppressor who is killing them by other means—and looking the other way while kidnappers and terrorists periodically murder them in the hundreds. If you have the capacity to defend God, shouldn’t you have an even greater capacity to defend yourself against murderous oppressors since self-preservation is said to be the first law of nature? Or is “God-preservation” and self-annihilation the first law of nature in Nigeria? If God, with his omnipotent powers, can’t deal with blasphemers on his own but needs your defense, why and how do you think he can defend you against a man who is—-or people who are— smoldering you? Nigerians aren’t victims of Buhari; they’re willing participants in and enablers of his vicious asphyxiation of Nigeria. There’s nothing that he’s

Do local refining to eliminate sector problems – IPMAN

Alhaji Popoola Ogundoyin, an Executive Member of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), says that unless Nigeria produces petroleum products through its refineries, the problems in the petroleum sector will persist. Ogundoyin stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday, in Ile-Ife. He expressed displeasure with the failure of public and private sector stakeholders to established standard refineries across the country that would produce enough petroleum products for the citizenry. According to him, Nigeria is the only country in the world that has crude, yet we are still importing petroleum products. “On crude, we have almost 18 by-products such as petrol, diesel and kerosene among others. “If we are producing these by ourselves, surely the problem of unemployment will be solved, for many will be employed and this will improve the economy as well,” he added. Ogundoyin urged Federal and State Governments to rise up to the tasks ahead of them for the welfare of Nigerians. “Both Federal and State Governments should construct new ones and renovate all spoilt refineries for the betterment of the nation,” he charged. He appealed to Nigerian leaders especially the politicians to try as much as possible to fulfill all promises made during their campaigns. According to him, without the masses voting for them, none of them can attain the post they are today. (NAN)
