Toronto, Baltimore, New York intercept over 900 stolen cars bound for Nigeria, Ghana [Photos]

Cities in North America, such as Toronto in Canada, Baltimore and New York in United States said they have intercepted many stolen vehicles bound to be exported to Nigeria, Ghana and other West African countries. Over 900 of the vehicles stolen by auto-theft syndicates, have been intercepted in the last year. The vehicles, such as Lexus, Honda are stolen from residential driveways in Toronto and driven to the port for shipment. York and Toronto police in a statement said they made a “large” recovery of 73 stolen cars worth more than $4.5 million in a joint investigation with the Canada Border Services Agency. Before the recovery, investigators said 32 stolen vehicles have already been shipped overseas to either Ghana or Nigeria. The investigation began in September, 2020, when authorities became aware of a gang of thieves allegedly targeting Lexus, Toyota and Honda cars and operating out of a location on Kitimat Rd. in Mississauga, according to police. The Toronto Police Service Auto Theft Suppression Unit and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), were involved in the investigation. Investigators were able to identify four people involved in the theft and trafficking of vehicles and have made multiple arrests and laid charges. They are Abu Sadiq Ayi, 41; Michael Atta, 32; Prince Boateng, 42; and David Ansong 40 — all of Toronto. They face multiple charges including theft of a motor vehicle. According to a statement by Sergeant Andy Pattenden of York Police, the men are being charged with *Trafficking in Property Obtained by Crime Over$5,000 *Theft of Motor Vehicle Over $5,000 *Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 *Possession of Automobile Master Key “Auto theft is of huge concern to police,” Toronto Police Supt. Ron Taverner told the Toronto Sun. “And we’re actively involved in investigations and targeting groups that are involved in these particular crimes. “They’re organized crime groups and they’re going out and stealing these vehicles and, in a lot of cases, they’re being put in containers and shipped off to other countries. And we’re finding more and more of this is taking place. Money drives a lot of these crimes.” “Our investigators have been working tirelessly to identify those responsible for the many thefts of high-end vehicles in York Region,” said York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween. In Baltimore United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Baltimore field office have also busted a car theft syndicate. They stopped 157 stolen cars from being shipped overseas during the past fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2019 through Sept. 30, 2020). The Baltimore Field Office ranks second in the number of vehicles intercepted during that time. Only the New York field office recovered more. The Baltimore Field Office covers the Port of Baltimore and the Port of Wilmington in Delaware. The total value of the vehicles was $4,876,000. Reports said 37 of the vehicles were stolen from Maryland. 16 others were stolen from Virginia. Nationally, the Office of Field Operations recovered 1,082 stolen vehicles, of which 833 were destined overseas. Maradona, regarded worldwide as a football genius died on Wednesday at the age of 60. Regarded by some as the greatest player of all time, Maradona combined awesome footballing ability with a flair for showmanship and a turbulent personal life marked by drug and alcohol problems. An autopsy report leaked to Argentine media said he died in his sleep after suffering heart failure, only two weeks after leaving hospital following surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain.

You Must Listen To The People Or Put Nigeria ‘On Fire’ – Wike Tells Buhari

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari has an opportunity to address the demands of the people or put the country “on fire”. His comment comes two days after the federal government met with leaders of the South-South region. At the meeting, the South-South leaders demanded the restructuring of Nigeria, in line with the principle of true federalism. “We must understand in this country that political leadership is very key,” Wike said on Thursday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. “Having the political will to implement what the people want is very serious. “I don’t want to talk about the issue of distrust or no trust in government. People have raised such issues, that they don’t think that nothing will come out of all this dialogue. I don’t agree with that. I believe that if the president does not do, given the opportunities he has now, then, he will be putting Nigeria on fire.” Governance Not Politics In an hour-long interview, Mr Wike touched on other issues, including the over-politicisation of governance in the South-South region and why Nigeria should implement state policing structures. “The problem is that we play politics in everything,” he said, while responding to a question about concerns raised by Deputy Senate President and Nigeri-Delta lawmaker, Ovie Omo-Agege. Omo-Agege, on Tuesday during the federal government’s meeting with South-South leaders, had criticised the bloc’s governors for not consulting with federal representatives from the region before coming up with their demands. But Wike described the criticism as a politicisation of governance. He argued that the federal representatives should, instead, have reached out to the Governors. “Unfortunately, you have the South-South zone, where you have PDP governance,” he said. “It is unfortunate. Now, as I speak to you, I have a Minister . . . he has never one day said ‘what do we do for the state, look what I’m thinking’. “So that opportunity has not been there. We are playing politics, saying these Governors are not members of my party, and so I don’t need to talk to them. And that’s the problem we have always had. “And we have said, that is not correct, politics have come and gone, we are talking about governance, what affects the people of Niger-Delta. When the time for politics comes, then everybody will go your own way.”

“It’s rubbish’ — Gowon reacts to accusation of looting half of central bank

Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state, has described allegations that he looted half of the Central Bank of Nigeria as “rubbish”. Tom Tugendhat, a member of the United Kingdom parliament, had accused Gowon of looting Nigeria’s treasury when he left office. Speaking at the UK parliament committee debate on a petition on the #EndSARS crisis, Tugendhat had urged the UK to call out corruption and use its powers to stop who profit from Nigeria’s wealth and hide it in foreign countries. “Some people will remember when General Gowon left Nigeria with half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London,” he said. However, Tugendhat did not provide any evidence to support his claim. In reaction to the remark, Gowon told BBC: “I don’t know where he got that rubbish from, I served Nigeria diligently and my records are there for all to see”. “What the MP said was just mere ridicule and I don’t know as to where he cooked up such statement. I served Nigeria as much as I could and my achievements during those years are available to everyone. “I don’t want to talk over the matter since those who know me very well say that the MP’s statement is nothing but a mere fallacy”. Gowon was Nigeria’s military head of state from 1966 to 1975, including during the time of the oil boom. After leaving power in 1975, Gowon went to the UK to study political science and international relations as an undergraduate at Warwick University. Several people including Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), have reacted to the claim vouching for Gowon’s integrity. Be careful of misinformation! H.E. Ethiopia PM orders final offensive against Tigray leaders

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday ordered Ethiopia’ s army to launch a final offensive against Tigray’ s leaders in their regional capital Mekele, saying the window for their surrender had expired . “ The Ethiopian National Defence Forces have now been directed to conclude the third and final phase of our rule of law operations , ” Abiy said in a statement on Twitter . “ In this final phase , great care will be given to protect innocent civilians from harm . EXTRA: Imo government cautions sacked council chairmen against resumption

……Traditional medicine practitioners seek quick passage of the bill on herbal practice The Imo State Government has cautioned the sacked local government chairmen and councilors against resuming work on Monday, November 30, as they threatened,TheGuardian has learnt. Elected for three years in 2018 under former Governor Rochas Okorocha’s administration, former Governor Emeka Ihedioha sacked the chairmen and councilors and replaced them with an Interim Management Caretaker Committee in 2019. Dissatisfied with their disengagement, they approached the Federal High Court Owerri, which declared their removal illegal and asked them to resume immediately. But the Governor Hope Uzodimma administration continued with his appointed council chairmen. However, the sacked chairmen resolved at a media briefing to resume work on November 30. Reacting to their resolution, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Charles Akaolisa, in a statement yesterday, urged them to respect the stay of execution granted in court and the outcome of the appeal challenging their reinstatement order. “It is important to state that Governor Uzodimma’s administration has not dissolved any elected local government council in Imo State. The administration, as a law-abiding government, will obey the final decision of the courts. “We shall neither be stampeded nor blackmailed into succumbing to the antics of any person or group of persons on matters before the courts,” the statement reads. MEANWHILE, National President of the Association of Commonwealth Natural and Herbal Medicine Practitioners, Dr. Cyprain Uba, has urged the National Assembly to give the bill on traditional medicine accelerated hearing and passage in view of its advantages. Insisting that the bill had been in the National Assembly since 2004, Uba also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the Presidential Initiative Committee on the Development, Promotion, and Commercialisation of Nigerian Herbal Medicinal Products (PIC), which was introduced in 2017. Uba stated this at the inauguration and administration of the oath of office on the Eastern Coordinator and members of the executive of the zone in Owerri. He said: “I use this medium to appeal to the Federal Government and the National Assembly to hasten the passage of the bill for an act to establish a council to regulate traditional medicine practice submitted in 2004 into law. “If passed into law, the bill will enable the government to recognise Traditional Medicine (TM) practitioners with a view to assisting them in their research findings. This will help the country to benefit from the green economy already being enjoyed in several countries of the world.” Culled from TheGuardian
