Tigger-happy policemen on routine patrol along the Tombia/Etegwe axis of the Yenagoa metropolis have shot a 17-year-old trader and two other residents of Bayelsa State who went to the Tombia market for regular shopping. The unprovoked shooting enraged some residents of the state on Wednesday who called for steep disciplinary measures to be meted to the officers involved in the shooting. Channels Television learned that the teenage victim, Alice Azaghene, would require a surgical operation to enable her to use her legs again. A resident, Kingdom Baine, said the teenager was sent to the market to trade periwinkle before tragedy struck. “I was in my house yesterday when her elder sister sent her to sell periwinkle at the market in the night around past 7 pm. After then, a police van arrived and shot. “After shooting the gun, bullets entered her two legs. That was what they told me,” the resident narrated. Another victim of the shooting, Ebinipre Onojamadu, said the second gunshot fired by the police personnel pierced her legs and put her in her current situation. The 47-year-old Onojamadu may not be able to walk for a very long time as the doctor said the injury she sustained from the gunshot was quite extensive. “About 6 o’clock in the evening, I was coming out to get some foodstuff. When I got close to the junction almost close to the roundabout, I heard a gunshot,” she said. “The second gunshot was the one that pierced through my leg. I didn’t know the first time that something had happened to me. “When they said they were shooting that we should go back, I couldn’t move. That was when I noticed that something had happened to me.” Meanwhile, the State Police Command issued a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer Asinim Butswat, confirming the incident. LG Elections In Nigeria Are Nothing But Organised Crime – Igini

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa-Ibom State, Mike Igini on Wednesday said local government elections in Nigeria are nothing but organised crime. Igini who disclosed this during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, accused state governors of interfering in the conduct of the polls at the grassroots. “Local government elections are nothing but organised crime. They should not be calling them elections at all,” he said. “Look at the Local Government system in Nigeria. We have lost 774 local governments in Nigeria to every sitting governor of the 36 states in Nigeria. “What constitutes free, fair and credible elections with respect to INEC-conducted election is different from the local government.” Igini also reiterated the commitment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deploy more technology and innovation to further enhance the transparency of the electoral process. According to him, the use of its public viewing portal during the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States eradicated possible electoral fraud as Nigerians saw the results of each polling unit online almost immediately after casting their ballots. “I can confirm that INEC has made tremendous progress. The INEC of today is no longer the INEC of before because, since 2011, the kind of elections that we have conducted had a remarkable departure from where we used to be even though we are not where we are supposed to be. “The INEC public viewing portal is a new innovation to deal with the recurring issues of vote changes at the level of collation and that was why it was introduced to ensure that at the polling unit, once the result is published, it should be sent to the viewing portals so that Nigerians can see it,” Igini added.

Interpol Nabs Three Nigerians ‘Who Scammed 50,000 Victims Worldwide

Three Nigerians have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a criminal organisation which is said to have compromised thousands of government and private companies in more than 150 countries across the world. The arrest was carried out by a joint operation of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Group-IB — a cyber security company — and the Nigeria police force. INTERPOL, in a statement on Wednesday, noted that the arrest of the suspects was as a result of a year-long investigation dubbed “Operation Falcon”. “The suspects are alleged to have developed phishing links, domains, and mass mailing campaigns in which they impersonated representatives of organizations. They then used these campaigns to disseminate 26 malware programmes, spyware and remote access tools, including AgentTesla, Loki, Azorult, Spartan and the nanocore and Remcos Remote Access Trojans.” the statement reads. “These programmes were used to infiltrate and monitor the systems of victim organizations and individuals, before launching scams and syphoning funds. “According to Group-IB, the prolific gang is believed to have compromised government and private sector companies in more than 150 countries since 2017.” Speaking on the arrest, Craig Jones, Interpol’s cybercrime director, was quoted as saying public-private relationships are important in “disrupting virtual crimes”, as cooperation in investigation will upset well-established criminal business models. “This group was running a well-established criminal business model. From infiltration to cashing in, they used a multitude of tools and techniques to generate maximum profits. We look forward to seeing additional results from this operation,” Jones said. In a separate statement on Wednesday, Group-IB described the three arrested persons as follows: “«OC» (32 y.o.), «IO» (34 y.o.), and «OI» (35 y.o.)”, adding that they were “identified with the help of Group-IB Cyber Investigations and CERT-GIB teams”. “The data discovered on the devices of the arrested TMT members has confirmed their involvement in the criminal scheme and identified stolen data from at least 50,000 targeted victims, according to Nigerian Police,” the statement by Group-IB reads. “Group-IB has been tracking the gang since 2019 and established that around 500,000 government and private sector companies could have been compromised by TMT gang members. “Based on the infrastructure that the attackers use and their techniques, Group-IB was also able to establish that the gang is divided into subgroups with a number of individuals still at large. The findings on other suspected gang members, whom Group-IB was able to track down, have been shared with INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate. The investigation continues. “The analysis of their operations revealed that the gang focuses on mass email phishing campaigns distributing popular malware strains under the guise of purchasing orders, product inquiries, and even COVID-19 aid impersonating legitimate companies.”

Life and times of Maradona

The whole world was thrown into mourning following the demise of football legend and Argentine hero, Diego Armando Maradona. Maradona spearheaded Argentina’s exploit in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico where the South American nation lifted the coveted trophy. All through his playing career, Maradona shone like million of stars and till his death there has been a dispute between him and another legend, Brazilian hero, Pele, who won three world cups with Brazil, who really is the greatest footballer ever. Born on 30 October, 1960, at the Policlínico (Polyclinic) Evita Hospital in Lanús, Buenos Aires Province, Maradona was raised in Villa Fiorito, a shanty town on the southern outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a poor family that had moved from Corrientes Province. The Argentine legend is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, and by many as the greatest ever. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. Maradona’s vision, passing, ball control and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature (1.65 m or 5 ft 5 in), which gave him a low centre of gravity allowing him to manoeuvre better than most other football players; he would often dribble past multiple opposing players on a run. On the field of play, Maradona was a leader as captain of the Argentine national team, His presence of the pitch always sent shivers in the spine of opponents. He was a bundle of talent with a knack for goals. Wearing the jersey number 10, Maradona always carried the burden of his country and the clubs he played during his days. Because of his talent, he was was given the nickname “El Pibe de Oro” (“The Golden Boy”), a name that stuck with him throughout his career. According to Wikipedia, Maradona was the first player in football history to set the world record transfer fee twice, first when he transferred to Barcelona for a then-world record £5 million, and second, when he transferred to Napoli for another record fee £6.9 million. He played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla and Newell’s Old Boys during his club career, and was most famous for his time at Napoli and Barcelona where he won numerous accolades. At the international level, Maradona had 91 caps and scored 34 goals for Argentina. He played in four World Cup for Argentina-1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994. In 1994, he was expelled from the tournament by FIFA for drug-related offence after two games for Argentina, one of which he spearheaded Argentina to beat Nigeria 2-1. Of all the World Cups he took part, the 1986 tournament in Mexico was where he shone as stars. Maradona single-handedly deliver the trophy to Argentina, scoring five goals in the tournament and unlocking the defence of opposing teams. Maradona’s first goal against England which he scored with his hand, is still being regarded as the ‘Hand of God’ till this day. He scored a second goal that won the quarter-final for Argentina against England. The second goal followed a 60 metres dribble past five England players. That goal was voted “Goal of the Century” by FIFA.com voters in 2002. In all, Maradona made 694 appearances and scored 354 goals for club and country combined, with a goal-scoring average of 0.51. Maradona’s career as a coach was not successful. He was made the coach of Argentina in 2008 and took the country to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with a dismal showing for Argentina. Argentina crashed to 4-0 defeat against Germany in the quarter-final of the tournament. He was later sacked by his country. Maradona also coached several clubs sides which are Textil Mandiyú (1994) Racing Club (1995), Al-Wasl (2011–2012) of Dubai; Deportivo Riestra (assistant), 2013–2017; Fujairah (2017–2018), Dorados de Sinaloa (2018–2019) and Gimnasia de La Plata (2019–2020). Gimnasia de La Plata was the last club he coached before his demise. The former Argentine star, until his death had serious issues with drugs. He was addicted to cocaine. He was sent expelled from the 1994 World Cup due to drug issues. This has been his undoing till he died. He had been in and out of hospital, aftermath of decades of doing drugs. On 2 November 2020, Maradona was admitted to a hospital in La Plata, supposedly due to psychological reasons. A day later, he underwent emergency brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma, a blood clot on the brain. He was released on 12 November after successful surgery and was supervised by doctors as an outpatient. On 25 November 2020, Maradona died of cardiac arrest at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He added, “So we are in touch with them and engaging with them but, of course, as in any democracy, the members of parliament are able to also air their views but what is important is that a balanced picture is made available to them all before they take any decision.” The minister briefed State House correspondents at the end of the 25th virtual meeting of the Federal Executive Council chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa. He also noted that he had recently paid a visit to his home state, Enugu, on the instruction of the President to engage with the youths and leaders on the #EndSARS protests. The minister revealed that governors of the South East were already reaching out to their contemporaries across the country to ensure that the lives and properties of the people of the region were protected during any crisis. He added that the leaders have given an assurance that they would do the same for non-indigenes in the South East. Onyeama made the remarks in reaction to the call by UK parliamentarians for sanction against Nigerian authorities and security agencies over human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings during the #EndSARS protests which held in October in various parts of Nigeria. On Monday, a member of the UK parliament, Theresa Villers, informed the lawmakers that about 220,330 people had signed an e-petition and they have a credible case. Members of the parliament had asked the UK government to consider imposing sanctions on Nigerian officials found culpable of human rights abuses during the demonstrations.
