Gunmen abduct businessman, burn down police van in Kano

Pandemonium broke out in an early hour of Wednesday at 1 a.m, when unknown gunmen kidnapped a businessman, Alhaji Abdullahi Kalos, in Minjibir town, about 50 kilometres from the ancient city of Kano State. This was just as the gunmen, attacked the policemen and burnt down their patrol van. The abducted businessman is well known in the town as merchant of building materials and foodstuffs,” a source who preferred anonymity said. However, a reliable source disclosed that the gunmen stormed the town around 1 a.m, shooting sporadically around Masaka area of the town before abducting the businessman, Abdullahi Kalos. According to the eyewitness, “I first heard a gunshot around 1:30 am, then the gunshots continued. Through my window, I then saw policemen returning the fire.” It was however added that the “gunmen stationed their men at all the junctions in the town. I suspected they have superior firepower as the police later backed down. He added, “Around 4:20 am, they attacked policemen laying ambush on them near Amsharu Primary School. In the police van, there was the DPO himself alongside his team. He said, “When the police retreated, the gunmen set fire on their patrol vehicle and left the town without further challenge.” Another eyewitness, however, disclosed that the gunmen came in a Hilux van, three Volkswagen Sharon vehicles and many motorcycles. The source hinted that the kidnappers numbering over 30 overpowered the policemen, that which led to them fleeing and abandoning their vehicle. But it was saddening that the reinforcement from police in Kano did not come in good time as the gunmen made away with the man,” the source said. Our source, however, stated that “They left their vehicles at Plantation area, and moved on foot,” said the witness. As of the time of filing this report, all attempts made to get the reaction of Kano Command Police Spokesman Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa proved abortive.

“It is common knowledge that the Emir was too progressive – Kwankwaso reveals why Ganduje dethroned Sanusi

Former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso has exposed reasons Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Muhammad Sanusi II as Emir of Kano. In a statement released by the former governor and signed by his Principal Private Secretary, Muhammad Inuwa Ali, Kwankwaso stated that Sanusi was dethroned by the governor owing to inferiority complex. According to Kwankwaso, fears of high esteem and calibre alongside the influence Sanusi had as Emir made Ganduje jittery and as a result, he dethroned him. “It is common knowledge that the Emir was too progressive for Gov. Ganduje’s liking and that was exactly why after his illegal removal and the dismemberment of the Kano Emirate Council, he appointed Emirs that will not question his ill-advised decisions even if they are against the interest of the state and its people.” The former governor said Ganduje always feels diminished and inferior in the presence of the former Emir. He also alleged that Ganduje harbours a pathological hatred for the Kano Traditional Institution, that was why he had to dethrone Sanusi. “We also know that Ganduje was madly obsessed with reversing everything that Sen. Kwankwaso did in the state. And we are aware, for these reasons, Gov. Ganduje was set, ab initio, to destroy the Kano Emirate and Emir Sanusi II was marked to be the first victim, the statement read. Kwankwaso said Sanusi’s enthronement had nothing to do with former President Goodluck Jonathan. Previously, the Kano State governor said that the dethroned Emir was appointed in 2014 to spite former President Goodluck Johnathan who sacked him as CBN governor. “Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano not because he was the best man for the throne but to retaliate what Jonathan did to him. Ganduje, a PhD holder, said he sacked the Emir to save the traditional institution from abuse.

Why Nigeria can’t ban flights from UK —FG

THE Federal Government has disclosed that it will not impose a travel ban to and from the United Kingdom, over the mutated strain of COVID-19. According to the government, it will require the concurrence of neighbouring countries for the ban to be effective. Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this when he featured on a Radio Nigeria programme, “Politics Nationwide” on Tuesday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mohammed said: “although the government is concerned over the importation of the COVID-19 new strain, it did not want to take a hasty decision.” He said the presidential committee on COVID-19 deliberated on the issue at its meeting on Monday and decided to watch the development for the time being. He said they are working with West African Health Organisations and other neighbouring countries, particularly, Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana. “We did not want to take a hasty decision to ban flight from the UK into Nigeria only to find out our people are going through Cotonou, Lome or Accra to come into the country. “What the airlines will do is to transfer Nigerian passengers to these routes and they will enter the country through the land borders. “This will lead into hardship to Nigerians because if you transfer your economy to other countries you lose a lot of money. “However, if we get the concurrence of these other countries, we will not hesitate to do the needful. We are consulting and being very careful in order to take a proper decision,” he said. It would be recalled that the minister gave the hint on Monday that the Federal Government might impose travel ban to and from certain parts of the world into the country. Mohammed, a member of PTF, had said at a Special NAN Forum that the government was concerned about the new strain of COVID-19, manifesting itself in the UK that is the mutated strain. “It is difficult to detect, it spreads faster and people have been known to die of it within a very short period of its detection. “This is a major concern to us as a country. “Why I did not want to pre-empt the PTF because we are meeting this afternoon, it is going to be top on the agenda of our discussions. “I will not be surprised if that will be the recommendation of the committee which is meeting later today,” he said.

Tension In Yobe Over Rising Farmers, Herders Clashes

Until ecent, clashes between farmers and herders, prevalent in other parts of the country, have been rare in Yobe. However, this has changed as in the last three weeks, clashes between the two groups have resulted in deaths and severe injuries with the government and the police saying they would turn to technology to curb the menace, as our correspondent reports. According to Daily Trust,There’s a heavy concentration of farmers and herders, Yobe State has not experienced the pandemic of violence between the two groups as much as other states. However, a rare clash in Garin Malam village of Jakusko Local Government Area has caused the death of one and resulted in injuries to several others and the destruction of many properties, which has caused concerns in the state. Usmanu Ali, a community leader in the area where the incident happened, said residents were thrown into fear and some have fled the village. According to him, trouble started when some unknown herders drove their cattle into villagers’ farms. The destruction of crops ready for harvest provoked many villagers. “The farmers rushed to report the matter to the local vigilante, who used guns in an attempt to contain the fight where one herdsman sustained a gunshot wound,” he said. The injury to the herdsman caused his kin to retaliate on Garin Mallam, according to Malam Ali. Just as the dust stirred in Garin Malam was dying down, another one kicked off in seven communities in four LGA’s including Buni Gari town of Gujba Local Government were 23 farmers sustained injuries as a result of a clash with herders. One of the farmers, Kyari Konto, said that every year he harvests about 40 bags worth of guinea corn from his farm. This year, after the herders invaded, he managed to harvest only 12 bags. “I was forced to hide whenever I noticed their movements around because they can easily kill as they were holding weapons,” he said. “Similar conflict may continue to linger because we are witnessing a mass invasion of herders this season perhaps due to the banditry in the northwest,” he said. The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said about three seriously injured victims would have to undergo amputation surgery as suggested by doctors. The Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Mohammed Goje while giving statistics noted that most farmers lost their products, about 23 who had an encounter with the herders sustained various degrees of injuries. Two of these victims from Buni Gari have had their arms amputated already while 21 other seriously injured victims are in hospitals being monitored. One of the victims from Garin Mallam will also be amputated while four others will undergo various procedures. Goje said over 78 farmlands with different produce were affected, with eight households burnt down and about 95 small and large ruminants catered away. While commiserating with the victims, he assured them of support from the state government saying that Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed that all victims be treated free and that he would mobilize resources to cushion the effect on the affected victims. For many people, these developments are worrying but for civil society organisations more so. The Executive Director, Yobe Network for Civil Society Organization, Comr Baba Shehu said violent conflicts between farmers and herders in the state, especially in the last three weeks, is taking another dimension. He said that despite consistent advocacies to relevant ministries, department and agencies as well as security agencies on the matter, there has been no effective and functional government-driven conflict resolution mechanism in the state. “It is high time we brought all stakeholders for dialogue and proffer lasting solutions to this situation, the government should be on the driver’s seat to secure the lives and livelihoods of its citizens. Anything short of that would be considered as negligence from the side of the government,” he said. In the same vein, the Kullen Allah Cattle Rearers Association (KACRAN) said the perpetrators should not go unpunished. The National President of the association, Khalil Muhammad Bello, in a statement, said, “KACRAN considers the destruction of people’ source of livelihood at this time when the country is facing the danger of food insecurity as [a]subversive act with a wicked intention to plunge citizens into an acute shortage of food stuff and such should not be tolerated. “While we condemn the act, we equally wonder why any peace-loving herder will destroy farmers produce and kill them if they try to prevent their animals from consuming the yet to be harvested farm produce. “We also call on the Government to direct law enforcement agencies to do everything humanly possible to protect the lives and properties of our dear farmers and the general society.” Beyond the usual rhetoric, the government and the police say they are thinking of a novel way to end the crisis by introducing data capturing. Governor Mai Mala Buni said that the state has taken proactive steps towards addressing conflict across the state. Buni, who spoke through his deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, while chairing a security meeting in Damaturu noted that a committee was earlier set up and went round to all local governments and emirates to intimate traditional rulers to maintaining peace and order. He said the government would continue to support the security agencies in their efforts to bring lasting peace. The Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, Yahaya Sahabo Abubakar, explained that a data capture system will be introduced to take details of all incoming herders. “Details of their names, photographs, fingerprints will be captured to easily trace them whenever the need arises,” he said. Meanwhile, the police commissioner earlier said he has deployed numerous police personnel to maintain peace and prevent further escalation of the situation. For many people in the state, they hope this will help in ending the violence and bring about a return to normalcy.
