2023: Group nominates Senator Nnamani for presidency

The Ken Nnamani groups in the diaspora have nominated former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, as the most desirable candidate from South East to run for 2023 Nigerian President. The coalition said that Nnamani was most qualified because of his antecedent and experience of leadership in national administration. The groups cited Nnamani’s role in the country’s critical era of alleged third term agenda of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and how he scuttled it, as a test case of his strong and unwavering character to preside over the country’s affairs. The groups’ Chairman, Lawrence Odoemelam, in a statement said that with the Igbos clamouring for a Nigerian President from the southeast, Nnamani fits into the cap for different reasons. He said that Nnamani ensured the stabilization of the country’s democracy, and has shown a strong affinity to good governance. “He is one of the outstanding sons of Igbo land who had the overwhelming support of his members in the senate during his tenure. Nnamani is of the view that in a multicultural and multi-religious country like Nigeria, credible elections provide platforms for different constituents of the republic to continue to collaborate to promote the good of all. “He also said that democratic societies survive the inevitable crisis of politics only if managers of state institutions deliberately uphold the rules of law and the norms of fairness, justice, and equity. “Nnamani carved his name in gold, on the sands of time, when he rejected a World superpower nation’s lobby to declare the 2007 Presidential election as flawed, to pave way for himself as the Senate President, to become an interim President. His vision has been of service and delivery to the people, as against power intoxication and incompetence,” Odoemelam said. Nnamani was elected to the Senate from the Enugu East Senatorial district of Enugu State in 2003 and served as President of the Senate from 2005 to 2007. The Ken Nnamani Center for Leadership and Development was launched in 2008 at Abuja to facilitate qualitative and transformative leadership and development in Africa.

Couple forced neighbors to sexually abuse their own daughter, 4, then tortured the girl to death

A couple forced their neighbours to sexually abuse their own four-year-old daughter, then they tortured the child to death, police say. Kourtney Aumen, 21, and her partner Ethan Mast, 35, are said to have beaten their neighbours’ young child from head to toe and dunked her in a freezing lake, before leaving her to die of her injuries. The pair, from Warsaw in Missouri, US, was arrested after the child died on Sunday, Dec 20. They allegedly told police they were targeting their neighbours for torture because the family’s mother was possessed by a “demon.” Police were called to the home of the neighbours, who have not been named, and discovered the couple’s four-year-old daughter’s body wrapped in a blanket and covered with bruises. She had been beaten with a wooden spoon, leather belt, punched and submerged in freezing water. The girl’s dad told detectives that Aumen and Mast had been torturing him, his wife, his two sons and their late daughter. Police found the man’s wife covered in dark bruises on her face and back. The couple’s two-year-old son was also badly bruised, although their youngest son, an infant, had no visible injuries. Investigators were told how Aumen and Mast had come over and started beating the two-year-old with a wooden spoon while forcing his parents to watch. Asked why he hadn’t intervened, the dad said he’d been told by Aumen and Mast that it was the only way to remove “Satan” from his wife. They are also said to have threatened to kill him, according to KRCG. The abuse meted out to the family escalated over the coming days. It is alleged that Aumen and Mast even forced the parents to sexually abuse their four-year-old daughter. On Sunday, Aumen and Mast are said to have shown up to beat the girl with a leather belt, prompting her to cry out for help. She was then taken outside and submerged in a freezing pond, with her head held underwater. Mast is said to have punched and flogged the girl with a belt while beating her two-year-old brother with a wooden spoon and forcing their dad to watch. The girl was left shivering and died shortly afterwards. Aumen and Mast left but were arrested shortly after and now face second-degree murder as well as assault and sexual abuse charges. Aumen’s Facebook page biography reads: “The heavens are roaring! The praise of your glory, for you oh God ‘are raised to LIFE again!’ “ They are being held in jail ahead of their next court hearing. It is unclear whether the murdered girl’s parents will also face criminal action.

Deeper Life school suspends principal over ‘child molestation’ case

The management of the Deeper Life High School in Akwa Ibom state has suspended Solomon Ndidi, the principal of the institution, over allegations involving molestation of a student. Deborah Okezie, a woman whose son is a JSS1 pupil at the Christian school, had shared a video on her Facebook account wherein she alleged that her son was starved and molested by some senior pupils of the school. Okezie claimed her son told her the principal of the school moved him to the senior students’ hostel for urinating on his bed. She also claimed that the senior students molested the little boy by pushing their hands and legs into his anus. The mother alleged that her son told her that they threatened to kill him if he reported to the principal or his parents. She said the principal promised to move the 11-year-old back to the junior hostel but had failed to do so. The video had gone viral and provoked outrage on social media, prompting the school to release a statement on Monday where it reacted to the allegations. While it noted that the principal has been suspended, the school said an investigation into the case has begun. “We will like to categorically restate that Deeper Life High School is built on the core values of godliness and excellence and will not tolerate any immoral act or molestation of any student,” the school wrote. “We believe parents /guardians enroll their wards in our schools all over the country because of the strong perception that ours offers a sure-footed platform for moral armament and academic excellence. “We want to assure the general public that investigations into the case have commenced and no culprit., whether staff or student, will be spared if found culpable at the end of the exercise. “As an interim measure and to underscore the seriousness we attach to higher superintending values, the school principal has been suspended summarily even as further investigations continue. “We firmly assure the discerning public that the overall outcome of the investigations will be made known. “And appropriate disciplinary actions will be meted to all culprits in this unfortunate act that admittedly threatens to cast unnecessary aspersions on a unique institution that has been a shining example to all over the years.”

Bandits kidnap village head, wives, others in Katsina

Bandits on Monday night kidnapped the village head of Kaigar Malamai, Kabir Muhammed Ajiya, his two wives and 14 other peasant farmers in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina state. He lamented the spate of killings, kidnapping and other nefarious activities afflicting communities in Dan-Musa local government, saying kidnapping remains daily occurrence in the area. When contacted, the Spokesman of the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah, promised to investigate the incident and get back to journalists later.

He is sticking to the maximum term prescribed by the Constitution of his country. “ Also , we share more than 1, 400 kilometers of border with that country , which can only be effectively supervised by God . “ I will speak with the President , and offer his country our support. We need to do all we can to help stabilise the Sahel region, which is also in our own interest . ” The statement further quoted Sambo as congratulating Buhari on the successful return of abducted schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, in Katsina State , and also his 78th birthday, last week . Insecurity: 349 killed, 290 kidnapped in violent attacks across Nigeria in November – Report

At least 349 people were killed in November in violent attacks across Nigeria, a report by a non-governmental organisation, Nigeria Mourns, shows. The report, titled “Violent Incidents Report: November 2020,” tracked violent killings across the country. The group uses newspaper reports and family sources to gather its data. It said the November cases were recorded in 23 states. The breakdown shows that 309 of those killed were civilians while 40 were security operatives. Also, 290 people were reported kidnapped in November. Borno State in Northeast Nigeria, troubled by the Boko Haram insurgency, had the highest number of killings during the month (162). After Borno, the geographical spread of the other most affected states shows the insecurity is not limited to any single part of the country with Edo in South-south Nigeria witnessing the second highest number of killings in November. The report listed the casualty figures for each of the 23 states as follows: Borno – 162, Edo – 57, Kaduna – 55, Katsina -12, Delta – 11, Zamfara – 10, Oyo – 5, Ondo – 5, Enugu – 4, Kogi -3, Kano – 3, Ekiti – 3, Adamawa – 3, Bayelsa – 3, Cross River – 2, Nasarawa – 2, Niger – 2, Rivers – 2, FCT – 1, Akwa Ibom – 1, Ebonyi – 1, Ogun – 1 and Sokoto – 1. In terms of perpetrators of the violence, the report states that 149 people were killed by persons suspected to be members of the Boko Haram or its breakaway faction, ISWAP; 86 were killed by suspected bandits while cult clashes claimed 62 lives. Also, 40 people died in isolated attacks, seven died through extrajudicial killings, three were killed by herdsmen and two died in communal conflicts. As insecurity continues across the country, many Nigerians have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to replace his service chiefs, but he appears not to think their overstay in office has a link to the insecurity menace. Despite taking office in 2015 with a pledge to make security a focal point of his administration, the security situation appears to have worsened across the country. This is despite counter narratives by government officials who mention the failure of the Boko Haram to carry out attacks outside Adamawa, Borno and Yobe as a sign the group has been decimated. However, while Boko Haram attacks in states like Niger, Nasarawa and Abuja have ceased since 2016, other forms of criminality including kidnappings have been on the rise in those states and many other parts of Nigeria. Mr Buhari’s senior media aide, Femi Adesina, in an interview on Sunday, claimed the president is winning the war against insecurity, despite the recent kidnap of over 300 schoolboys in Katsina and other cases in many other parts of Nigeria. Mr Adesina also urged Nigerians to be patient and not give the president a timeline to curb the wave of insecurity.

Two BEDC staff electrocuted in Delta

Two staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) have been electrocuted in Asaba, the Delta State capital. It was gathered that the yet-to-be identified victims were working when power was suddenly restored, leading to their electrocution. The Director-General, Young Nigerians Organisation, Victor Ojie, who confirmed the incident to PUNCH on December 22, accused the electricity company of not providing safety gadgets for its worker. “Over time, this ugly trend has been happening in Delta State; employees of the BEDC have been dying on the job. I wonder why the company cannot provide safety gadgets for its workers,” he said. “When the workers want to go to the field, they usually switch off power lines that link to the area of work. After finishing the work, they will radio the office to switch the power on. Some of them sabotage themselves by switching it on while work is still ongoing, but if they have a safety guard, they will not be electrocuted. The families of the victims are in pain now; so, we urge the BEDC to compensate the families.” he added.

Buhari extends PTF mandate till March

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the lifespan of the presidential task force on COVID-19 till March 2021. Speaking while receiving the end-of-the-year report of the task force at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday, the president said the nation cannot afford to lose the gains of the past nine months in the fight against the virus. In March, the president had named Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation, as head of the 12-man task force. The president also called for vigilance amid the surge in COVID-19 cases. “Recent reports reaching me indicate that Nigeria is now facing a rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases nationwide which is similar to the second wave of infections occurring in other countries across the world,” he said. “New epicentres have been identified and the nation cannot afford to lose the gains of the last nine months. I have critically evaluated the situation and remain convinced that urgent measures have to be taken to halt the spread and the attendant fatalities. “Closely associated with the foregoing is the need to speedily and strategically access and administer the COVID vaccine in a safe, effective and timely manner. This is an important obligation that we owe Nigerians as we go into year 2021 and it must be carried out through an efficient machinery.” The President added that “the nation is clearly in a perilous situation given the virulent nature of this second wave and we must act decisively to protect our people. I therefore urge all sub-national entities, traditional rulers, religious and leaders of thought to collaborate with the PTF by taking up the responsibility for risk communication and community engagement at all levels. Now is the time for collective efforts to be intensified. “As the festive season approaches, I urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and stay safe. Non-essential trips and large social gatherings should be avoided or shelved completely.”

Financial Times: Nigeria close to becoming a failed state

The Financial Times of London has described Nigeria as a country going backwards economically and plagued with terrorism, illiteracy, poverty , banditry, and kidnapping and risks becoming a failed state if things don’ t take a drastic turn. The UK-based newspaper said this in an editorial on Tuesday titled, ‘ Nigeria at Risk of Becoming a Failed State ’ . It said the abduction and subsequent rescue of over 300 schoolboys in Kankara, Katsina State , revived memories of the 276 Chibok schoolgirls abducted in Borno State in 2014. According to the newspaper , while the government ’ s claim that no ransom was paid to the abductors of the schoolboys remains doubtful, other acts of criminality could not be overlooked . The editorial read in part, “ The government insists no ransom was paid. Scepticism is warranted. In a country going backwards economically , carjacking, kidnapping and banditry are among Nigeria ’ s rare growth industries . Just as the boys were going home , Nigerian pirates abducted six Ukrainian sailors off the coast . “ The definition of a failed state is one where the government is no longer in control. By this yardstick, Africa ’ s most populous country is teetering on the brink . ” The newspaper also questioned the claim by President Muhammadu Buhari that Boko Haram had been technically defeated. It said contrary to the government ’ s claim , Boko Haram remained an ever-present threat. The Financial Times stated , “ President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 pronounced Boko Haram technically defeated’ . That has proved fanciful. Boko Haram has remained an ever -present threat . If the latest kidnapping turns out to be its work , it would mark the spread of the terrorist group from its north-eastern base . “ Even if the mass abduction was carried out by ‘ ordinary ’ bandits — as now looks possible — it underlines the fact of chronic criminality and violence. Deadly clashes between herders and settled farmers have spread to most parts of Nigeria . In the oil -rich , but impoverished, Delta region , extortion through the sabotage of pipelines is legendary . ” The newspaper said security is not the only area where “ the state is failing” . The Financial Times added that Nigeria has more poor people than any other country even as Nigeria has the highest number of out of school children on earth. The newspaper stated that as oil continues to lose its value , Nigeria ’ s economy would worsen. “ The population , already above 200 million, is growing at a breakneck 3. 2 per cent a year . The economy has stalled since 2015 and real living standards are declining . This year , the economy will shrink 4 per cent after COVID – 19 dealt a further blow to oil prices . “ In any case , as the world turns greener, the elite ’ s scramble for oil revenue will become a game of diminishing returns. The country desperately needs to put its finances, propped up by foreign borrowing , on a sounder footing, ” it said . The newspaper said Buhari , who has less than three years left in office , must use the remainder of his term, to redouble efforts at improving security. It advised the government to restore trust in key institutions , among them the judiciary, the security services and the electoral commission, which will preside over the 2023 elections . The Financial Times said the #EndSARS protests led by Nigerian youths, signaled a glimmer of hope for Nigeria ’ s teeming youth population. It added , “ The broad coalition that found political expression this year in the EndSARS movement against police brutality provides a shard of optimism. At least Nigeria has a relatively stable democracy . Now Nigeria ’ s youth — creative, entrepreneurial and less tainted by the politics of extraction — should use that system to reset the country’ s narrative. ” The newspaper concluded by saying that it was time for Nigeria to restructure its political system and concentrate on security , health , education , power and roads. “ At the present trajectory, the population will double to 400 million by 2050. If nothing is done , long before then , Nigeria will become a problem far too big for the world to ignore, ” it warned .
