Man collapses in Ogun police cell, petitions IGP

A man , Afolabi Fashogbon , collapsed at Onipanu Police Station, Ogun State causing panic among his family members . The PUNCH gathered that the incident happened around 08. 30 pm on Thursday. Fashogbon said he had gone to inspect his family’ s land located at Bamigbose Fashogbon Village , Ota , Ogun State , which he claimed a High Court had awarded in the family’ s favour when he was arrested by police. A copy of the judgement and a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State were made available to our correspondent. Part of the petition read , “ Some police officers from Onipanu Division, Obasanjo Ota came to the land around 03 pm and arrested me that they had a signal from the state command Eleweran to do so and I was kept in their custody. Efforts to get bail proved abortive and I had health challenges . “ About 8. 30 pm when my wife and counsel approached the officer at the counter, when I was not given bail, to bring dinner to my cell , they found that I was not making any movement. It was my wife that alerted the DPO who then asked that I should be carried out. I was carried out lifeless as I did not know how I got to the hospital ( the video is available) . It took only the grace of God to revive me. “ Since the matter is already in court and the current judgement is in our favour , I told the police that they had nothing to do with the matter . There is no violence. We will not give room for backdoor justice . Police should ask the petitioner to meet us in court . ” He lamented that while receiving treatment in the hospital, some police officers also attempted to arrest him again without regard for his life. He added , “ I was still asked to come over to the state Command, Eleweran on February 24, where they could arrest and detain me and do other certain things that happened in Police custody and force me to take an undertaking that I and my generation will vacate our homeland in one week . “ Police will come around and evacuate all of us while the matter is already in court and sub judice ? Is this how the law is practised ? Is their plan to kill me?” When contacted , the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi , confirmed that the man collapsed. He said , “ The man is having a case with the state CID . While he was arrested, they were waiting for officers from the state CID to come and pick him , he collapsed. He was taken to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, the doctor confirmed that he has low blood sugar . He has been treated and responded positively to treatment and he is okay. ” On the allegation of misconduct and police interference in a matter already in court , Oyeyemi said , “ That is a blatant lie. He did not have any issue with the police. There is a complainant against him . And if a case is reported, it is the duty of the police to listen to both sides and know what is happening . The fact that a case is in court does not mean that you cannot commit another offence as regards it. “ If a case is in court and you are reported, the police have a reason to invite and arrest you . I don’ t know what he meant by misconduct. The police did not wake up one day and decide to get him arrested. ”

US govt gives details of how Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ laundered funds for North Korean bank hackers

New details have emerged about the case against Instagram influencer, Ramon Abbas, alias Hushpuppi who wowed the internet with pictures of his clothes, cars, money and lifestyle between 2012 and 2020, Forbes reported on Friday. In July 2020, Hushpuppi was charged by the United States Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles with conspiring to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from “business email compromise” (BEC) frauds and other scams. On Wednesday, the Department of Justice shed more light on one of those scams: working with North Korean hackers to launder funds stolen from a Maltese bank. According to a statement released by the Department of Justice (DOJ), Hushpuppi took part in a “North Korean-perpetrated cyber-enabled heist from a Maltese bank in February 2019.” In a July statement, the DOJ referred to the attack as “a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution.” Both the date and amount match that of the attack on Malta’s Bank of Valletta in February 2019. In July, Hushpuppi’s then lawyer, Gal Pissetzky, told Forbes that Hushpuppi was not guilty of the charges and described him as “an entrepreneur” who made his money legitimately through “real estate” and his work “promoting brands” as an “Instagram personality.” Abbas’ criminal trial was due to be heard in late 2020, before the pandemic forced a delay. On Wednesday, his name emerged among details of a larger international criminal conspiracy involving so-called North Korean military hackers involved in “a series of destructive cyberattacks, to steal and extort more than $1.3 billion of money and cryptocurrency from financial institutions and companies,” according to the DOJ statement on the new indictment. FBI Deputy Director, Paul Abbate, said in the statement that Wednesday’s unsealed indictment expands the FBI’s 2018 charges for the “unprecedented cyberattacks conducted by the North Korean regime.” Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers of the Justice Department’s National Security Division added: “As laid out in today’s indictment, North Korea’s operatives, using keyboards rather than guns, stealing digital wallets of cryptocurrency instead of sacks of cash, are the world’s leading bank robbers.” The US is specifically accusing North Koreans Jon Chang Hyok, 31, Kim Il, 27, and Park Jin Hyok, 36, of being members of the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB), a military intelligence agency of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The three North Koreans are described in the statement as being connected to “North Korean military hacking units” known in the cybersecurity community as Lazarus Group and Advanced Persistent Threat 38 (APT38). Hushpuppi was linked to the North Korean conspiracy this week when federal prosecutors unsealed a charge against Ghaleb Alaumary, 37, of Ontario, Canada. Alaumary pled guilty to charges related to his role as a money launderer for the North Korean group filed in November 2020. The DoJ connected Hushpuppi to the North Korean hackers through Alaumary, who they allege “conspired” with “Ray Hushpuppi,” to “launder funds from a North Korean-perpetrated cyber-enabled heist from a Maltese bank in February 2019.” The attack, although largely unsuccessful, was of such seriousness in Malta that the country’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was forced to address parliament in 2019 over what the Times of Malta described as the “creation of false international payments that saw €13 million transferred to banks in four countries.”

Insecurity: Give Us State Police, Decentralise Judiciary Now – El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has joined his voice with national analysts calling for devolution of power between the Federal Government and 36 states in the country. The governor who was one of the speakers at a programme called ‘Radio Now’s Urgent Conversation’ aired Thursday on Channels Television said state police and devolution of the judiciary is important to save Nigeria from the brink of collapse. “I will dwell on three of the issues that I believe are critical to the immediate needs of the country to pull back from the brink. “The first, it is imperative for Federal, state, and community policing. We do not have enough police. One centralised police for the country just has not worked. “Secondly, we must amend the constitution and relevant laws to ensure control of oil and gas, mines, and minerals in the states that already have control over land under the land use Act with royalties and taxes payable to the Federal Government and the Federation Account “Number three, we must rectify the anomaly of a Federation that has a more or less unitary judiciary,” the governor explained. While stressing his earlier points highlighted, the governor said, “My first recommendation is to implement the three key devolution proposals that I mentioned above. Give us state police now, vest all minerals in the state now, and decentralised our judiciary now, not tomorrow, not later.” El-Rufai also stressed that banditry is a national problem and it is the responsibility of relevant stakeholders to calm nerves through their utterances and not fan the embers of division. “It is an understatement to say that Nigeria is in one of its most difficult moments. The genuine fears for their lives and property felt by many citizens across the country need to be assuaged. All responsible persons must show compassion to our compatriots that have been affected while calming nerves. “Banditry is a national problem, with victims from all parts of the country, and we should address it with a common resolve,” El-Rufai said. According to the governor, the country requires elite consensus to take the poison out of identity politics.
