Okonjo-Iweala Emerges WTO Director-General

A former Nigerian minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has emerged as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization. A statement released by the WTO on Monday, announced the confirmation of Okonjo-Iweala as the first female and African to become the organisation’s Director-General. Her recent endorsement by the United States of America and the withdrawal of the South Korean Trade Minister and candidate, Yoo Myung-hee, sealed the deal for Okonjo-Iweala. Yoo Myung-hee withdrew her bid to lead the WTO leaving Okonjo-Iweala as the only remaining candidate for the job. Yoo decided after discussions with the U.S. and other major nations, and took various issues into account including the need to revitalize the multilateral organization, according to a statement from Korea’s trade ministry on Friday. “There was no consensus,” Yoo said. “So we needed enough time for in-depth consultations with important members, including the U.S.” The withdrawal came after dozens of former U.S. government officials urged President Joe Biden to endorse Okonjo-Iweala after the Trump administration blocked her selection in 2020, making the U.S. and Korea the only holdouts favouring Yoo. That opposition was enough to halt the selection process because WTO decisions are made on the basis of a consensus of its members. By quitting the race, Yoo cleared Okonjo-Iweala’s path to secure the leadership of the Geneva-based institution.

2020 WASSCE: 39% Score 5 Credits Plus In Newly Released WAEC Results

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, 2020 second series. Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Patrick E. Areghan who made the announcement at the WAEC national office, Yaba in Lagos noted that 61,509 candidates sat for the examination, out of which 24,491, representing 39.82 percent obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects including English language and Mathematics. Of the 24,491 that obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects including English language and Mathematics, 12,040 representing 49.16% were male candidates, while 12,451, (50.84%) were female. Areghan pointed out that the percentage of candidates who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, in WASSCE for private candidates, 2018 and 2019, were 35.99 percent and 35.10 percent respectively; thus, showing a marginal increase of 4.72% in performance. He however explained that the number of candidates that had five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, may not necessarily be a basis for judging the level of performance in the examination because the examination was more or less a remedial one. “Some candidates may just need only one or two papers, other than English Language and/or Mathematics, to remedy their admission deficiencies. “Also, the analysis of the statistics of the performance of candidates shows that out of the 61,509 candidates that sat the examination, 31,751 candidates representing 51.62 percent obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics. “Out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 61,111 candidates, representing 99.35 percent have their results fully processed and released while 398 candidates, representing 0.65 percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors on the part of the candidates. The HNO made it known that efforts “are being made to speedily complete the processing to enable all the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released, subsequently. “Results of 5,548 candidates, representing 9.02 percent of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice. Areghan assured that the cases are being investigated and that reports will be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council for determination in due course; adding that the Committee’s decisions will be communicated directly to the affected candidates thereafter. Comparing entry figure for the examination, Areghan pointed out that a total of 66,375 candidates, representing a 31.63 percent decline, when compared with the 2019 entry figure for the examination, while 61,509 candidates actually sat for the examination at 540 centres spread across the nooks and crannies of the country. The drop in the entry figure according to him, could be attributed to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. For candidates with special needs, a total of 101 candidates were registered for the examination out of which 39 were visually challenged; 15 had impaired hearing; Ten were Albinos; One was spastic cum mentally challenged, and Thirty-Six were physically challenged. All these candidates, according to WAEC, were adequately provided for in the administration of the examination while their results have also been processed and released along with those of other candidates. Candidates who sat the examination have been directed to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org as the Result Checker PIN and Serial Number needed by candidates to check their results online are contained on the candidate’s Smart Identity Card used during the conduct of the examination. Areghan emphasized that collection of certificates for WASSCE for Private Candidates would be based on requests online, via the Electronic Certificate Management System platform.

Insecurity: NIN enrolment can’t solve problems created by ‘Visa on arrival’, says group

A group, the World Zionist Union has faulted claims by the Federal Government that the ongoing National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment and synchronization will help reduce insecurity in the country and advance other national security interests. In a recent letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, the group maintained that the mindset and people that created the problems cannot be the same mindset and people that will solve it. The letter signed by Dr. Christopher Asadu, Prophet Godfrey Gbujie and Dr. Chigozie Chukwuokolo read in part: “The official argument that the synchronization policy would help the national security interests of the nation is very questionable and a fallacy because the compounded national security problems of Nigeria are traceable to bad and unpatriotic political governance which His Excellency’s office and government are very culpable for and cannot be exonerated from.” The group also alleged that most discerning Nigerians are already suspecting the Presidency of a deliberate plan through the NIN enrolment, to boost the Fulani and Muslim population and offer Nigerian citizenship to the countless Arab and Muslim immigrants freely roaming the streets, market places and forests in Nigeria. According to the letter, it is believed that with the NIN, they will qualify for enumeration in the next national population census and subsequently will be qualified to vote. “After all, is it not His Excellency’s government that officially introduced the National Immigration Policy of ‘Visa on arrival’ which encouraged the influx of millions of uneducated, unskilled and unemployable foreign Arab Muslims – many of who are suspected to be Islamic terrorists?” The group among other things called for the cessation and outright ending of the NIN synchronization or that the policy be suspended until it shall have been discussed exhaustively nationwide and approved or disapproved by a reasonable majority of Nigerians in a referendum. The group regretted that the rush to NIN centres by Nigerians occasioned by the questionable urgency with which the federal government has attended the NIN enrolment, violates COVID-19 protocols, mocks the COVID-19 claims of the federal government while making the proposed mass vaccination programme of citizens, suspect.

We’ll not sit, watch some people destroy Nigeria —Defence minister

MINISTER of Defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi (retd), has said the military agencies will not sit and watch anyone shooting at somebody or destroy the country, as he asked for more time to bring the security situation under control. Speaking over worsening insecurity and the appointment of new service chiefs, the minister said nobody can tell when the current war against insurgents wreaking havoc on the country will end. After he revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Galandasi, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, General Magashi told newsmen that: “nobody can predict anything” because it was not a conventional war in which the strength and weakness of the enemy could be established. While acknowledging the cooperation of the members of public in providing useful information to assist in the military operations, the minister said the ongoing battle against criminals could not be faced by the military alone. He said: “To be honest, the role of the armed forces and other security agencies have really been very encouraging and we implore Nigerians to encourage us to do more. “But if you are only waiting for success, nobody can predict anything, especially with the kind of war we are fighting. The new concept of everything is not so conventional as to predict that you can beat the enemy at your own pace. “The only way a conventional warfare is fought is to know the strength of your enemy, his weaknesses and compare with what you have. Then, you can certainly predict whether or not you can win the war. But the most important thing is the ability of the people that you are fighting for to appreciate the effort the military is putting in and encourage them to do better. “Today, everybody seems to rely on success, without corresponding interest to assist the military. However, I think Nigerians are getting it better. They know that the military cannot do it alone and they are doing all their best to see that they assist us in whatever manner — intellectually, materially and anything that will make us to get out of this thing, especially, in the area of intelligence. “We want to know what these people are up to; we want to know what they are doing so that we can predict where to hit them hard. “I am the minister of defence and the defence of this country is entirely my responsibility. We have the mandate to ensure that the lives and properties of people are protected. “I will also refer you to the promise Mr President made to Nigerians in 2015, that is, on security, economy and corruption. If in the process, the policy has had some people who think that they should be given independence to do what they want to do in order to bring this country down, so be it. “We cannot sit and then you shoot at somebody and we allow you to go because somebody thinks that you are one that can kill and go away. Please, give us time; we are in a state where we want everybody to look up and see what he can do for this country, not what the country can do for you,” he said. On the APC membership revalidation exercise, the minister said it was in the right direction, as it would give new members who defected to the party opportunity as well as strengthen the APC ahead of the 2023 elections.

Inbound passengers shun isolation, enforcement collapses

There were strong indications on Sunday that relevant state governments and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control were not enforcing the 14-day self -isolation for inbound international travellers . The PUNCH gathered that no official of the NCDC or the concerned state governments was attached to the new arrivals, who were expected to be in isolation in their homes for 14 days. The Federal Government on February 9 placed travel restrictions on 100 passengers for failing to comply with the mandatory Day 7 post- arrival COVID -19 test. Government had in January placed similar travel restrictions on 100 travellers who failed to undergo the compulsory COVID -19 test after returning into the country. But besides failing to turn up for the test, investigations by our correspondents revealed that many travellers had not been observing the 14- day self -isolation. Many inbound international travellers, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity, stated that they shunned self – isolation. An information and communications technology , who came back from Canada two weeks ago told one of our correspondents that unlike in Canada, where somebody would be asked to keep a close watch on an international passenger , nobody checked whether he was observing self -isolation or not . He stated , “ Nobody monitored me. , I went out on the fifth day , but I ensured that I used my face mask . I will advise relevant government agencies to enforce compliance with 14-day self – isolation . ” Another passenger , who arrived from the United States last month, confided in The PUNCH , that he was in isolation for only five days and started going out on the sixth day. “ There is no enforcement of self -isolation . Everybody is on his own . I only stayed at home for five days, ” he stated . A resident of Enugu, the Enugu State capital , in an interview with The PUNCH , said his cousin flew in from New York in December and headed to Enugu from Lagos for a burial . “ He did not go into isolation either in Lagos or Enugu . He was just mixing freely with people without using a face mask , ” the Enugu resident stated. (The Punch)
