Buhari: We won’t allow ethnic, religious violence

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu, on Sunday evening said President Muhammadu Buhari has promised that his regime will not allow any ethnic or religious group to stoke up hatred and violence against other groups. Shehu disclosed this in a statement titled “ President Buhari condemns reported cases of ethnic violence in the country. ” The statement came at a time there was reported case of ethnic violence in Shasa, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The statement read , “ President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed that his government will protect all religious and ethnic groups, whether majority or minority in line with its responsibility under the constitution. “ In a reaction to reports of breakout of violence in some parts of the country by some ethnic and sectional groups , President Buhari warned that the government will not allow any ethnic or religious group to stoke up hatred and violence against other groups . “ The President condemned such violence and gave assurance that his government will act decisively to stop the spread of any such violence. “ He appealed to religious and traditional leaders as well governors and other elected leaders across the country to join hands with the Federal Government to ensure that communities in their domain are not splintered along ethnic and other primordial lines. ”

Gumi: Herdsmen took up arms to defend themselves against brutality

Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, says herdsmen had to take up arms to defend themselves against brutality, since the government neglected them. The cleric had described bandits as very shy people, who are only interested in their cows. Speaking when he featured on Politics on Sunday, a programme on TVC, he also blamed Nigerians for contributing to insecurity. Gumi was responding to a question on whether political leaders could be blamed for refusing to address the complaints of bandits about extrajudicial killings by law enforcement agents, as witnessed during the #EndSARS protests, which kicked against police harassment. “I blame everybody, from the President to you, the man speaking. I blame everybody. It is a combination of small, small issues here and there that produced this monster. Everybody is at fault. I don’t want any Nigerian to exonerate himself,” Gumi said. “The media plays a part by polarising the nation. Even journalists helped in stirring this ethnic chauvinism we see all over the country. Government has neglected these people all along and they were using a hammer to kill a fly. “To the southern Nigerians, #EndSARS is not a reason to understand why these herdsmen took up weapons. They were brutalised by the military, not only the police, for a lot of time, and not only in this regime. We should not be surprised.”

Bauchi gov replies critics, says my reference to AK47 was to amplify herders suffering

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has reacted to critics of his statement purportedly supporting Fulani herders to carry AK47 rifle, saying that his statement was not intended to support criminality but to put the herders sufferings in perspective. The Senior Special Assistant on media, Muhktar Gidado made this known on Sunday in a press release he sent to Vanguard. According to him, the primary objective of the governor was to avert the dangerous prospect of nationwide backlash as tempers were flaring up, and given that the phenomenon of inter-ethnic migration is a national pastime involving all ethnic groups in Nigeria. “First, at no time did the Governor set out to justify criminality by anyone, no matter the person’s ethnic nationality. Rather, he admonished us, in the interest of national unity, to avoid wholesale branding of any ethnic group as it is inconceivable that any one group can be made up of only criminals. By extension, the Governor made it abundantly clear that it will be inappropriate to label any one tribe based on the crimes of a few members of the ethnic group. “Second, to the extent that not every herdsman is a criminal, the Governor’s reference to AK47 was simply to put in perspective, the predicament and desperation of those law-abiding Fulani herdsmen who, while carrying out their legitimate cow-rearing business, have become serial victims of cattle rustling, banditry, kidnapping and assassination…….As a constitutionalist which he has proved over time, all through his political career, Governor Bala Mohammed will be the last person to advocate a subversion of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He did not do so in the past; he will not do so today. “Third, Governor Bala Mohammed’s description of forests, as “no man’s land”, (please read as gift of nature), is a carry-over from his own geo-political environment where a pastoralist could set up camp, in any forest, for a few weeks without causing any uproar or opposition. To interpret such a temporary stay as a form of ‘land grab’ by the Fulani herdsmen is completely incorrect. Bala Mohammed is very familiar with the Land Use Act, including the criteria for land acquisition and cannot therefore seek to undermine the statute which, as Governor, he has sworn to uphold. “Fourth, the Governor would want it placed on record that his statement was intended to caution all stakeholders to guard against escalating the tension, just as many patriotic stakeholders, particularly from the North, have ben working round the clock to avert reprisal actions that could throw the entire country into a cauldron of unimaginable proportions,” the statement reads. The governor further called for reasoned circumspection in handling inter-ethnic hostility of the nature that the ejection of herdsmen from parts of the country is degenerating into. “It is his fervent wish that, together, all stakeholders will work towards re-establishing inter-ethnic trust and harmony that has been so badly dented, within the past few weeks or months,” the statement adds.

Dismissed SARS officer sentenced to death over extra-judicial killing

A State High Court in Benin City, Edo Sate, on Friday, sentenced a police constable, Joseph Omotosho, to death for conspiring with four other constables, said to be at large, to kill a car dealer in 2015. The slain car dealer, Benson Obodeh, was suspected by the police to belong to a criminal gang. Mr Omotosho, who was dismissed from the Nigerian police after the incident, served with the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit that was notorious for its brutality and other forms of human rights abuses. The four other dismissed constables were also convicted but not sentenced because they were not present in the court. They were identified as Adeleke Adedeji, Abena John, Oniyo Musa, and Henry Shobowole. The four were said to have escaped while on trial from one of the Medium Security Correctional Centres in Benin City during the October, 2020 jailbreaks. The judge, Ohimai Ovbiagele, found all the accused persons guilty on an eight-count charge, which included conspiracy to steal and murder. From the court proceedings, the slain Mr Obodeh, 26, a Benin-based car dealer, was listed as a member of a criminal gang who allegedly stole a Peugeot car in Lagos. He was said to have been arrested at his home in Benin City on May 21, 2015 and tortured to death the same day by the five police officers. His corpse was dumped at the Specialist Hospital in Benin City, with a different name by one of the officers that killed him. Mr Obodeh’s family wrote a petition to the inspector-general of police where they demanded an investigation, after searching for several weeks without finding him. The police, it was learnt, tried at several times to frustrate the family from discovering details of the murder, but for the intervention of Solomon Arase, who was the inspector-general of police at the time. After an orderly room trial by the police authorities, the five officers were found liable and dismissed from the service to face court trial. The judge, Mr Ovbiagele, said the testimonies against the accused were firm and almost unchallenged. Mr Ovbiagele pointed out that the accused could not substantiate counter evidence against charges leveled against them. “The fifth defendant, Joseph Omotosho, is sentenced to death by hanging or with chemical infusion as an alternative on conspiracy to commit murder,” he said. Mr Omotosho was also sentenced to seven years imprisonment for his role in the stealing of the deceased money from his bank accounts. The #EndSARS protest, which rocked several Nigerian cities last year, was a reaction to decades of police brutality, as police officers in the country are rarely brought to justice for their crimes against citizens. The death sentence against the dismissed police constable may, therefore, offer a glimpse of hope to Nigerians who have been clamouring for reforms in the country’s criminal justice system.

EXTRA: Cleric cautions comedians against using christianity for jokes

An Abuja based cleric has cautioned both christian and non-christian comedians to refrain from using christianity or any other religion for entertainment. Sarah Omakwu, Senior Pastor of Family Worship Centre (FWC) in Abuja, gave the caution on Sunday in Abuja during her Bible teaching series on “How to Love God”. Omakwu said that part of loving God is to reverence him and to defend the gospel of Jesus Christ and all He represents. “Making jokes about christianity is provoking and a mockery to God and to those who believe in God, in Jesus and in Christianity. “Comedians should stop using God’s words for comedy and other forms of entertainment. “Comedians should stop throwing jokes about the word of God, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Communion, anointing oil, deliverance and powers. “Christian comedians, especially, ought to be telling the world about God and not making Christianity look like a joke to those whom they ought to be evangelising to,” she said. She cautioned christians to refrain from reposting ‘silly’ comedys about the gospel of Christ and about pastors and men of God. According to her, most of the comedies are not funny, but silly and provoking to those who believe. “If other religion do not joke about their religion, why should christians joke about theirs. “Loving and knowing God include reverencing God, fearing him and honouring him both in words and in action. “If comedians must tell jokes to entertain the people, they should use the things of the world to entertain the world. “Christians should follow the examples of the three Hebrew boys in Daniel 3:16-18 in the Bible, who were ready to lose their lives in order to defend the gospel of Christ. “Same thing with Daniel in the Bible who was thrown into the lions’ den. “All these are examples that todays Christians should emulate,” she said. Omakwu said that Christians must be intentional in defending the gospel, not in a way to incite or cause trouble but in a way that pleases God and to draw men to Him. She noted that in an attempt to curb the attitude of telling Christian jokes which she considered to be provoking, a ban was placed from telling christian jokes on the church alter. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the cleric gave the caution against the back drop of a trending video where someone posing as pastor was seen warning a congregation not to destroy things while under any form of anointing or deliverance.(

EndSARS: 5 Youth Members Resign From Anambra Judicial Panel

….. Accuse Govt Of Not Ready To Genuinely Address The Plight Of Victims Anambra judicial panel of Inquiry on Police brutality and Extra judicial Killing has suffered setbacks following resignation of five members of the panel. The members, mainly youth representatives were Mr Chijioke Ifediora , Mr Henry Ugwu, Mr. Osonwa Chukwuka and Mr Ebelechukwu Ngini and Chibuike Obiwuzie. Announcing their resignation in a letter to Governor Willie Obiano, their representative, Chijioke Ifediora said their decision followed alleged government insincerity towards the panel set up to address the plight of victims and families of police brutality. He also accused government of failing to provide the panel with the necessary logistics and support to function effectively. He alleged the government had ignored the Panel to playing to the gallery, regretting that the society had viewed members of the panel as conniving with government to deny them right to fair hearing. He said they were giving the government a two-week ultimatum to fulfill all condition to reconvene the panel, warning that the youths would hit the streets on failure to do so. He said: “The state government had demonstrated through the way it had treated the panel that it was not set up to genuinely address the plight of victims and families of police brutality. “Over 250 pending petitions from the 310 submitted but no word had been heard from government since the panel adjourned early December whereas it was supposed to have resumed on Jan. 14. “The application for more sitting days to enable the panel attend to the plethora of cases had not been granted and that the society was now seeing members of the panel as conniving with government to deny them right to fair hearing. “It is imperative to mention that Anambra, under your watch and that of your predecessor, was the cynosure of Police brutality, extortion, and even extrajudicial killings in Nigeria. “The notorious defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Awkuzu and numerous other Police outfits in Anambra State have become infamous around the world for outrageous, unconscionable, and iniquitous violations of the fundamental rights of Nigerians, including the right to life. “We were impressed when the Government promptly constituted the Panel to investigate cases of Police brutality and recommend compensation to victims among other points in its terms of reference. “Sadly, the sittings of the Panel were characterised by inefficiency and poor organisation because the state government failed woefully to adequately provide for logistics for anything at all involving the proceedings of the Panel. “We are however now convinced beyond peradventure that the Anambra State Government has no regard for the victims of the many human rights violations by the Police in the State. “Many victims and other interested stakeholders have been communicating the Panel’s secretariat or its members in a bid to know why the Panel is no longer sitting despite more than 250 petitions which have been unattended to. “We firmly refuse to be pawns in the game of the Government, so we hereby resign our appointments into the Anambra State Panel and completely dissociate ourselves from all the charade put up to give lip service to the plights of residents of Anambra State.”

Miyetti Allah: If You Kill A Herder, Don’t Go And Sleep, We Will Avenge

The national secretary of Fulani socio-cultural group, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Alhaji Saleh Alhassan, has vowed that the group is ready to retaliate the killing of Fulani herders in any part of the country. In an interview with The Punch, Alhassan also said the group would resist any attempt to forceful eviction of herders out of the south-west region. According to him, “Nobody has the right to evict herdsmen. If you say you are going to evict us, we will resist eviction. We have been surviving in harsh environments. If we do not resist, we will be wiped out of the planet. “If you kill a herder, don’t go and sleep, we will revisit you, and it’s not because we hate your tribe. People attack herders, and in one way or the other, herders have found a way to retaliate,” Alhassan said. He added that “All those who travelled to the Benin Republic and others are coming back home. All those saying they will bar foreign herders from entering Nigeria are just playing to the gallery because if they are aware of the ECOWAS Protocols, they would know they cannot chase them away. That is why the position of the Bauchi State Governor is the true position. You have no right to evict anybody from any part of the country. “Our number has increased recently because of the tension in Ghana and Benin Republics. The ones in Benin Republic have integrated with the Yoruba in such a way that they speak the language. They were initially living in the South-West, and they are coming back. “They expected a reaction from us, maybe by way of attacking other ethnic nationalities. But that is wrong because the herders they are attacking are the innocent herders. Are the criminals representing anybody? They are doing their criminal enterprise. Our own pain is that the people who are supposed to know are pretending as if they don’t know” he added.

Herdsmen Kill Three Farmers In Ondo

Suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded Ijugbere axis of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State at the weekend and killed three farmers working in their farmland. This came barely some hours after suspected armed bandits attacked men of the Amotekun security network in Ute in the same Owo Local Government Area of the state. The herders according to sources killed the farmers in the forest reserves on Saturday. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had already given herdsmen quit notice from government reserves, banned underage and night grazing in all parts of the state. The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Akeredolu on Agriculture, Mr Akin Olotu confirmed the killing via a text message Sunday. He described the killing of the farmers as unfortunate. His words: “Those blaming Governor Akeredolu for saying the illegal occupants should vacate the forest should bury their heads in shame.” The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Tee-Leo Ikoro had not responded to several calls and text messages sent to him for his reaction as at the time this report was filed.

Again, Bandits Abduct 18 Passengers In Niger

Eighteen passengers of the Niger State Transport Authority (NSTA) have been kidnapped by bandits. The attack occurred at Yakila village in Rafi Local Government Area of the state on Sunday. The passengers were said to be heading to Minna, the state capital from Kotangora when the incident happened. The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Mallam Ibrahim Inga, confirmed the incident to our correspondent during a telephone interview. Inga, who was on his way from Kagara for the revalidation of his APC membership, said they visited the scene where the bandits operated. He explained that they met a woman with her child who was left by the bandits but 18 other passengers were taken away. “The only thing I can tell you now is we have rescued the woman and her baby and she is in the vehicle with us and we are on our way to Minna. “She told us that the bandits blocked the way and went away with other 18 passengers in the bus. “No government official was among those kidnapped. I can’t give more than that for now because the woman is traumatized and we cannot be asking her too many questions for now,” Inga said. He, however, promised to get back to our correspondent when he gets more information. The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Wasiu Abiodun, neither picked his calls nor responded to messages. DAILY TRUST
