Nude video: Ex-Imo gov Ohakim writes IGP, seeks withdrawal of charges

Embattled former Governor of Imo State , Ikedi Ohakim has demanded that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, should withdraw the multiple criminal charges filed against him by the police, saying he did not circulate a nude video of any woman . According to him , the nude video upon which he was now being charged should be subjected to “ a thorough forensic investigation ” to determine , between him and his accuser , who made the video. He also called for a comprehensive investigation of all the issues that gave rise to the multiple charges against him . Ohakim , in the petition to the IGP , filed by his lawyer , Aloy Ejimakor, drew attention to the two charges filed against him before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory and the Abuja division of the Federal High Court . The letter entitled : “ Re : Unlawful and malicious prosecution , harassment , intimidation , defamation , and false information against Dr . Ikedi Ohakim at the behest of Ms . Chinyere Amuchienwa -Igwegbe ” , was obtained by journalists in Abuja on Friday. The charges with Ref. No . FCT /HC /CR/993/2020 and FHC/ABJ/CS/287/2020 bordered on alleged false information and alleged publication of the nude pictures of the nominal complainant, Ms Chinyere Amuchienwa -Igwegbe . The ex – governor referred the IGP to his petition of January 20, 2020, wherein, he complained about assault on his person by Ms . Chinyere Amuchienwa -Igwegbe ( hereafter : “ Ms Igwegbe or Amuchienwa ”) at a Hotel in Abuja and other unlawful acts by her . He said the contents of the said petition were clear, precise, and unambiguous and had then , at the request of the police, subsequently submitted credible evidence to support it. The letter reads , “ The complaint of our client was still under investigation by the Deputy Inspector- General of Police, Federal Investigation Bureau , in connection with which our client and Ms . Amuchienwa were interviewed several times at the office of DIG – FIB when on September 7, 2020, the Special Tactical Squad of the same FIB extended a new invitation to our client over a fresh petition brought by Ms Igwegbe on the same matter . “ And this was just days after our client was invited by the National Agency for Trafficking in Persons over the similar petition by Ms Amuchienwa against our client, and which petition she concealed from the police. “ In the interim , compelled by our concerns that this whole matter was now bordering on persecution, we commenced judicial proceedings to protect our client’ s constitutional rights, pursuant to which the Court – on September 10 2020 – issued a restraining Order , stating “ That all parties in this Suit are hereby ordered to maintain the status quo and should not do anything in connection with the subject matter and should stay all action whatsoever pending the determination of the substantive motion in this suit ” . “ This is an addition to a similar and contemporaneous order against NAPTIP and a re -affirmation of the two orders on 25th September 2020. “ All these orders and other processes were duly served on the concerned police officers , including particularly the former CP Legal ( Mr . Osayemo) . Yet, beginning from September 21 to the present , the police – ostensibly on the improper promptings of Ms . Amuchienwa – has filed two separate charges against our client in two separate courts , containing a myriad of allegations that are so wild that it seems a stretch to relate them to anything our client might have done . In addition to these anomalies , we have been informed that the third round of charges is underway . “ It is noteworthy that the first round of Charges was grounded on the assault incident at the Abuja Hotel, in which our client was the complainant. How the whole story later changed to the point that our client has been charged for false information does not comport with reason and what Police initially discovered on the scene. In addition, how was the conclusion reached , in the same vein , that our client was defrauding Nigerians ( including Ms Igwegbe ) , using the name of Babatunde Fashola, the Honorable Minister for Works ? It is clear from the land documents ( which the Police has ) that the land in question does not belong to our client , so how come the Police believed Ms Igwegbe that she paid N 500 million to our client for a land that is not in the name of our client? And how did Ms . Igwegbe effect said payments – by check , cash , or transfer ? And how could she make such huge payments without our client executing any instrument of transfer of title , such as a Deed of Assignment or even a simple receipt ? “ These are questions the former CP Legal ( Osayemo) should have resolved before charging our client for defrauding Ms Igwegbe of Five Hundred Million Naira, which Charges they libelously published in both mainstream and social media. “ The second set of Charges relates to Ms Igwegbe ’ s claims that our client made ( photoshopped or filmed – according to her , she was not sure) and published her nude video in viral social media. Ms Igwegbe , either by herself or through Counsel , has variously made said video available to the police and other agencies she petitioned on the same allegations ( particularly NAPTIP) , all in a desperate attempt to frame our client. At the same time , she proceeded to make an audio recording of her voice, accusing our client of having made the nude video at issue . “ Sir , we make bold to say that it does not comport with prosecutorial best practices for our client

Lekki tollgate: Youth rep, Rinu, pulls out of Lagos #EndSARS pane

Rinu Oduala, a youth representative on the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing alleged killing of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki toll gate last October has stepped down from the panel . She made the disclosure on Friday in a piece, ‘ Let ’ s stay the course of justice , partial wins are not enough ’ . The activist , who faulted the planned reopening of the Lekki toll gate, maintained that justice has not been served to victims of the Lekki shootings of October 20, 2020. In the piece today, Oduala said , “ My stand on the reopening on the toll gate is clear ; the state government and the private organisation operating the toll have not been cleared of collusion with elements allegedly deployed by the federal govt to target citizens on home soil during a time of peace , without provocation. “ Justice has not been served , and as a representative of the Nigerian citizenry , my only recourse is to stay the course of justice . “ On 6th February 2021, we were ambushed with votes to reopen the toll gates . I participated because I do not believe in silence . It is clear where my loyalties lie. “ But at the end of the day , parties on the panel voted to reopen the toll , citing lost jobs as more important than justice for lost lives through a proceeding that didn ’ t form a proper quorum without the reps who represent the youth constituency that birthed the idea of the panel, and on whose mandates the panels were set up. “ Coupled with the undue intimidation of peaceful protesters , the cyber attacks accounts loyal to the government , and many more, I will be stepping down from the Lagos Judicial Panel as it is now obvious that the government is only out to use us for performative actions. “ We must not forget the purpose of this panel: to address injustice and create accountability for the SARS brutality and for the heinous events on 20th October 2020. “ When calls for justice are subsumed by commercial concerns and vested interests , it calls into question the legitimacy and integrity of the entire affair and the impartiality of the proceedings . Without a final panel report or actionable steps, we are returning to the status quo. ”

NBA drags Buhari to court over IGP tenure extension

The Nigerian Bar Association has sued the President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd . ) , over the extension of the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu. The NBA commenced the legal action on Thursday, February 11, 2021, at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in Suit No . FHC/L/CS/214/2021. The defendants in the suit include the President , the IGP and the Police Service Commission. In the suit , the NBA seeks the judicial determination of the constitutionality of the President ’ s extension of Mr Adamu’ s tenure as the Inspector General of Police for three months after Adamu had on February 1, 2021, attained the 35 years of age of service as a member of the Nigeria Police Force. In a statement on Friday, NBA President , Olumide Akpata , said the extension was “ unconstitutional” and the NBA will continue to confront lawlessness in any form . He said , “ The NBA’ s decision to take this extraordinary line of action is underpinned by an urgent need and a sacred duty to reassert the supremacy of the rule of law in the face of growing impunity and seeming reluctance of law officers in government to give proper counsel . “ The NBA’ s position in the suit is that Mr Adamu ceases to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force when he attained the milestone of thirty- five years of service . Therefore, the President ’ s extension of Mr Adamu’ s tenure by three months , in the NBA respectful view, is unconstitutional. “ In the grand scheme of things , the NBA is wary that the more government officials casually violate the law, the harder it will become to expect citizens to be compliant . Citizens take their cues from their leaders and public office holders who flout the laws of the country that they are meant to uphold will discover sooner or later that their examples will be followed by those that they purport to govern . “ The ubiquity of acts of impunity, especially by those in high public offices , portends and existential threat to the survival of this country and her hard-won democracy . The NBA, now more than ever, is firmly committed to changing this narrative. “ As the outcome of the suit is awaited, the NBA will continue to condemn and confront lawlessness in any form and from all quarter . ”

Governor Ortom reminded Nigerians of what his colleague, Mohammed once said on national television that a Fulani man is a global citizen and therefore does not need a visa to come to Nigeria and that the forests belong to herdsmen. Responding to Governor Bala Mohammed’s comment that there are Benue people who are freely doing business in Bauchi and elsewhere, Governor Ortom stated that Benue indigenes in Bauchi have been law-abiding and do not carry arms to attack their hosts. Northern elite under the auspices of Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), on Friday, said plans are underway to hold a crucial meeting with governors from Southern and Northern regions in order to de-escalate rising tension and improve responsible collaboration and synergy in the country. The forum, while appealing to local ethnic defenders in various communities across the country to cease threats and attacks, charged all law-abiding herders to relocate to the North if they are safe at their present location. Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Director, Publicity and Advocacy of the forum in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja did not, however, state when the meeting would hold but urged President Buhari and governors to consult and explore measures that will lower tensions and assure all Nigerians that we live in a country where laws have meanings. “Northern Elders Forum commits to continue to work to retrieve the country from the dangerous cliff where it has been placed by irresponsible people, many of them in positions of responsibility. “We have plans to meet with governors in the North and South to improve responsible collaboration and synergy, and we intend to visit communities where we have influence to lower tensions and provide assurances and comfort,” the statement read. The NEF stressed that its intervention became imperative sequel to the continuing narratives and threats, including comments from seemingly responsible Nigerians and even elected officials who swore to protect the rights of all citizens and the survival of the country, but raising fears and passions that could make it easy to break more laws of the land and pitch citizens against each other. Dr Baba-Ahmed alleged that there were efforts to create multiple sources of falsehood in videos and other inflammatory materials in the media clearly targeted at inciting people to act violently against each other. According to him, “Allegations of planned or actual genocide are being made with reckless abandon, and even the international community is being lobbied in futile efforts to sell the fiction that some groups are intent on mass extermination of other groups.” He urged President Buhari and governors that fight against armed criminals must be pursued on all fronts and with a lot more seriousness, saying the criminal must not reap from the suspicions and fears which his activities also generate.

It is the second meeting that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige is holding with the striking university workers, in an attempt to resolve the issues leading to the labour unrest in the universities. At the beginning of the meeting, the minister lampooned the two unions, describing their industrial action as illegal and unknown to labour laws.
