Herdsmen: Southwest Doesn’t Want To Accommodate Other Tribes –Bauchi Gov Alleges

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Muhammed, has said some states in the Southwest region of Nigeria don’t want to accommodate other tribes. He was reacting to the recent development in some states in the Southwest where herdsmen were asked to leave. The governor was speaking as a Special Guest of Honour during the launch of the inaugural edition of the Bauchi Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ’s magazine titled “Correspondents’ Watch” on Thursday. Oyo and Ondo state government have been in the news over their activities to stop herdsmen from using forest reverses in the states. A controversial Yoruba “activist”, Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, had issued a quit notice to herdsmen accused of sundry crimes in the Ibarapa area of Oyo and enforced same. Bala Mohammed said: “The west doesn’t want to accommodate other tribes but we are accommodating your tribe in Bauchi. “We have Yorubas who have stayed in Bauchi for over 150 years. “Some of them are permanent secretaries in Gombe, Bauchi and Borno. “If cybercrime is being practised mostly by one tribe, you don’t criminalise the whole tribe because of this. “That is why you journalist needs to be sensitive and exercise restraint. “Avoid writing reports that will threaten the unity of this country.” According the governor, herdsmen are bearing arms to protect themselves from cattle rustlers and other criminal elements that rob them of their possession or kill them. He added: “The tradition of transhumans, pastoralism, has exposed Fulani man to cattle rustlers who carry a gun, kill him and take away his cows. “He has no option but to carry AK 47 because the government and society are not protecting him.” The governor argued that nobody own any forest in Nigeria, saying the forests are owned by Nigeria. He stated: “Under section 23, 24 and 25 of the Constitution, every Nigerian is free to stay anywhere. The Governor slammed his Benue counterpart, Samuel Orthom, saying poor handling of farmers-herders clashes in his state incited other tribes against the herdsmen. ”My brother and my colleague Ortom started all this as regards herders clashes with other tribes. “That’s why I must commend the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, NGF Solomon Lalong. “He is a hero in the promotion of peace despite his diverse and minority background. “He has put an end to the incessant fighting between herdsmen and other tribes in Plateau.”

EXTRA: There is conspiracy to assassinate me, Ned Nwoko, Regina Daniels husband alleges

A Nigerian Billionaire and former member of the House of Representatives, Prince Ned Nwoko on Thursday raised an alarm over an alleged conspiracy to assassinate him. Nwoko who represented Aniocha North-South and Oshimili North-South between 1999 and 2003 raised the alarm at a press briefing he organized alongside his Nollywood actress wife, Regina Daniels on Thursday in Abuja. He said that the assassination plot had a connection with a piece of land in his community in Delta where he was building a university. He also stated that a tussle about who becomes the next traditional ruler of his community was also another significant factor. He however stated that the traditional stool issue had been settled by the elders of the land, adding that they also gave their consent to the allocation of the land. The matter, Nwoko said had since been reported to the police authorities who are investigating the matter. According to Nwoko, the assassination plot was exposed by one Mr Ossy Bosah who was serving a jail term at Kuje Prison in Abuja. The former federal lawmaker said that Bosah was privileged to get wind of the plan from fellow inmates. Following the exposition of the plot, Nwoko said that Bosah’s life was threatened via text messages, regretting that shortly after he was released from the prison, he died mysteriously. According to him, an autopsy was being carried out to ascertain the cause of Bosah’s death. He said, ”Bosah was able to get the information on social media and the attention of my wife, Regina was drawn to it. I then reported the matter to the police and Department of State Security (DSS) and they went and interviewed the inmates involved. The inmates mentioned the name of one businessman who deals in the oil and gas sector as the master minder.” Speaking about the university, the Delta State-born billionaire said that the building had gone 95 per cent completion. Lending his voice to the clamour for a rotational presidency ahead of the 2023 election, Nwoko said that who became the president was not the problem but who would fix the economy. While describing President Muhammadu Buhari as an honest man who was trying his best to develop Nigeria, Nwoko added that that the economy had remained in dire straits. He regretted that Buhari became president at old age. “I admire the current president Muhammad Buhari because I like honesty. I love honesty and he is an honest man, yes age may not be on his side, yes health might be a challenge because we all have such challenges. “If he became an elected President in his 40s I am sure there would have been a lot of difference. You know what he did when he was head of state. “So it is not just about the President or head of State being honest person everybody around him must have to key in and deliver for the interest of the people. “So the economy is bad, this is not to say it is the fault of this government but it is the fault of the system. We are lucky to have a good country geographically with beautiful weather, good arable land, we can farm all year round, we produce everything here. “We just need to address the economy properly and you will see the difference. In the UK, a graduate or artisan that gets a job after three months salary with mortgage financing is more likely to stay on their jobs for 15 to 20 years so they become disciplined they don’t want to lose those jobs because they might be in trouble over the mortgage. “So it pays them to remain honest and work harder. But there they have a clear vision of what life holds for them, here there is no clear vision everybody is roaming around in circles and this is not good.” “So time will come when people must decide to choose the right leadership that will give them good governance. “The banks are not functioning, there are so mortgage, the insurance companies. the sector is dead, the stock exchange is there ceremoniously. “People should be able to get a mortgage from the bank for House cars that are commensurate with your income. “You should be able to get finance to buy a car, everything about the economy is wrong in Nigeria so until the bank revisit the fiscal sector is the biggest problem we have in Nigeria. “Any government that commits itself to these sectors he will bring a lot of progress to Nigeria. In fact, these areas alone can employ not less than 10million Nigerians within two years if properly managed. “The banks can not on their own be charging interest rates of 14% and even more. Government has to come in and regulate them and fix interest rates and it is a very simple thing to do. “Government should be able to have a task force that would deal with this sector. Once it is done you will see the economy growing, practically all Houses in Nigeria are built and bought by cash. “That cash is not helping anybody. That cash is just sunk in there. Cash is not part of the economy. You the owner of the house can not use it to borrow money or get the facility, take this house and give me facility. “Abroad everybody goes on holiday those who cannot afford it take financing from the bank to go on holiday when you come back over six months you pay. So this sector, the financial sector should be the driving force for the economy. “When people are gainfully employed they become responsible citizens, we talk about book harm, bandits, kidnappers, herdsmen, look the fact is that these people did not choose to become those things because they love it, it is principally because of the economy, the frustration they feel. “The pain and the bitterness they feel. There is an urgent need for the Government to

101-year-old’ woman survives COVID in Osun

Victor Adetiloye, the chief medical director of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), says a 101-year-old woman survived COVID-19 after receiving treatment at the facility. In a statement issued on Thursday, Adetiloye said the woman was taken to a private hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun state, after she developed cough, fever and breathlessness but had to be referred to OAUTH after she tested positive for COVID-19. He added that she spent less than two weeks on admission before she was discharged from the hospital. “She is a 101-year-old woman who initially presented at a private hospital in Ile-Ife with acute onset of cough breathlessness, fever and malaise,” the statement reads. “Symptoms started eight days before presentation. The patient’s clinical condition worsened and this warranted a screening test for SARS CoV2. The PCR result returned positive and she was subsequently admitted to the OAUTHC isolation centre on 30/01/2021. “The relevant findings on admission included poor oxygen saturation (SpO2 90% on oxygen), lethargy, altered sensorium, neutrophilic leucocytosis, and hypokalemia. She was subsequently managed with intravenous antibiotics, supplemental oxygen, high dose multivitamins, zinc sulphate, potassium supplementation, subcutaneous clexane and low dose intravenous dexamethasone. “She was closely monitored as regards vital signs, especially the oxygen saturation, pulse, blood pressure and blood glucose. She was cautiously anticoagulated and subsequently mobilised on wheel chair.” The CMD added that the woman’s condition gradually improved, and she was taken off oxygen six days after admission. “At discharge, she was stable with oxygen saturation at 97 percent, and other vital signs were within normal limits,” he said. “She was discharged home on medications and counselled on the need to observe all the non-pharmacological preventive measures against COVID-19. “The total length of admission was 12 days, and she was discharged into the warm embrace of her children and other close relations.”

FLASHBACK: Two Years Ago, Fani-Kayode Said He Would Rather Die Than Join APC

On Wednesday, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State said former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor spoke two days after he held a meeting with the former minister and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State. Although Bello claimed that Fani-Kayode had “joined our party in good faith,” the minister countered the governor, insisting that he remains a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the denial of the former minister, who is a staunch critic of the APC-led government, the issue has continue to generate reactions. Two years ago when the rumour mill was agog that Fani-Kayode had joined the APC, he completely ruled out the possibility of defecting to the APC. Taking to Twitter, he had at the time described the ruling party as “a filthy, rat-infested sinking ship.” He had also christened the party as “darkness” and “the Almajiri Peoples Congress (APC)”. He had said: “The suggestion that l joined the APC is false and insulting. Those that are peddling this fake news should bury their heads in shame. With what we have witnessed, l would rarher die than join a filthy, rat-infested sinking ship like the Almajiri Peoples Congress (APC). “I am committed to opposing the APC and those that are in their ranks for the rest of my natural life and I will NEVER join them no matter what! They are nothing but darkness whilst l stand for the light of God and truth: there can be NO fellowship between light and darkness.” Amid the claim and counter claims of Fani-Kayode’s defection, something is clear and that’s – the last has not been heard of the matter.

All Criminal Elements Coming Into Nigeria Must Be Flushed Out – Abaribe

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has said that regardless of what arguments may be held over insecurity in the country, one resolution that must be reached is to flush out all criminal elements. Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Abaribe said authorities must not continue to paper over matter when it comes to the issue of security. The lawmaker who specifically spoke about claims that certain citizens were being sent away from different regions of the country, said only miscreants have been chased out of the forests from where they have been unleashing mayhem on innocent Nigerians. “No Nigerian is being sent away from anywhere, criminals are being sent away from the forest where they are,” Abaribe argued. He urged fellow legislators to be mindful of the message they pass and emphasized that the desideratum for solving Nigeria’s security need at this time, is to ensure that all criminal elements coming into the country from wherever they are, be flushed out.

We Must Negotiate With Bandits For Peace To Reign – Matawalle

Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara State has said dialogue remains the best option to end banditry in the country. Mohammed said this while responding to questions from newsmen in Yola, Adamawa State capital, on Thursday. The governor was in Adamawa on an official visit to witness the inauguration of Phase II rural roads projects and distribution of maintenance equipment held at Kuva-Gaya in Hong Local Government Area of the state. According to him, the best option to douse tension and bring an end to banditry in Zamfara and beyond is to subscribe to dialogue. “I have been always saying, the best solution and option to tackle banditry is to seek for dialogue with the bandits.” “If really we want to end this banditry activity, we have to sit on a round table and negotiate. “Because through dialogue and reconciliation we are able to secure the release of many people who were under the captivity of kidnappers. “So, the best way out for my colleagues, governors, is for them to subscribe for dialogue,” Matawalle said. He maintained that the dialogue option was not meant to fight for those that refused to repent, but the government is using carrot and stick approaches. The governor noted that some bandits that prepared for dialogue, government sit with them and listen to their grievances, if any. “But those that refused to take path in dialogue we fight them. Because, as a governor, my number one priority is to ensure peace and stability, and to ensure people are sleeping with two eyes closed,” Mohammed added.

Ebonyi State University Students Protest Over Poor Infrastructure

Students of Ebonyi State University on Thursday blocked the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway in protest over poor infrastructure in the institution. The protest follows an earlier outcry on social media by students of the institution who shared videos and claimed that at least two students have died due to suffocation while writing General Studies Program (GST) Exams. According to the protesting students, the University had adopted the Computer Based Test (CBT) for some General Studies Program (GST) courses. The GST are courses taken by all students of the institution irrespective of the department of faculty. The students said the hall where the examination was held was too small for the crowd of students that were to write the course, hence the The students are therefore demanding that the school authorities scrap the Computer Based Test (CBT). A representative of the school management and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Professor Happiness Oselebe promised to put on hold the Computer-Based Test and address other grievances by the student. Also, Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Eric Igwe and Commissioner Of Police Garba Aliyu spoke with the protesting students and assured them that their demands will be addressed.

Herdsmen invasion: Learn to be truthful, Soyinka warns police

Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has warned the Nigerian Police Force to always be truthful in its engagements with the people, declaring that the police lied in claiming that herdsmen and their cattle did not invade his Abeokuta residence. Soyinka, in a statement sent to Tribune Online on Thursday titled: “Mad cow and madder narratives,” confirmed that his home was actually invaded by herdsmen and their cows on Wednesday evening, stating that “both cattle and herdsmen were flushed out of my property.” The statement reads: “The most distressful aspect of my recent interaction with cows and herders is that it has created a most unwanted distraction from the ongoing life and death Nigerian narrative. One has to take time off to deal with distortions and fake versions, while students are being reportedly waylaid and killed and/or kidnapped in Ondo and farmers are being slaughtered in my own state. “In short, the killings continue even as panels are being launched to enquire into immediate past human violations. For those who truly seek details of the Ijegba incident, I hereby affirm that I was never physically attacked, neither did I attack any cows. The cows and herders did however attack my property – and not for the first time. “The police need to be very, very careful, learn to be straightforward with public information. Failure to adhere to that obvious, basic form of conduct means that the public will lose total confidence in security agencies and constantly bypass them in times of civic unrest, no matter how trivial or deadly. How on earth could the police claim that my property was not invaded by cattle? It was. “My groundsmen knew the drill and commenced the process of expelling them. Fortunately, I was then driving out and was able to lend a hand by vehicle maneuvering. Both cattle and herdsmen were flushed out of my property. “Once they were outside the gates, I came down from the vehicle and beckoned the herdsmen to come over. At first they pretended not to understand, then, as I approached, fled into the bush. We thereupon “arrested” the cows, confining them to the roadside, while I sent my groundsman, Taiye, to the police to come and take over. “Since they took rather long in responding, I summoned a replacement and proceeded to the police station. On the way, we met a detachment, turned round, and together we returned to the scene of crime. The police wanted to commence combing the bush for the fugitives but I stopped them – what was the point? Keep the cows, I advised, and the owner will show up. Of course, that owner eventually did. “I thoroughly resent the police version which suggests that the cows never invaded my home: home is not just a building, it includes its grounds. And it was not a stray cow, or two or three. It was a herd – we have photos, so why the lie? It is so unnecessary, unprofessional and suspiciously compromised. The police suggest that I have nothing better to do than to go accosting cows on the public road – to what end? If the police demand proof, the next time such an invasion takes place, I warn that there will be no lack for cadaver affirmation and the police will be officially invited to join in the ensuing suya feast. So please, let us get serious! “Getting serious means seeking with a sense of urgency, ways of terminating mayhem, impunity, and the homicidal culture being imposed on us through some near cultic business minority who just happen to trade in cattle. It means not giving up on peaceful solutions, but also being prepared for the worst. Those of my line of thought have been working on various ways of sensitizing the nation to the very real and imminent danger issuing from this cattle aberration. “The menace, I repeat, challenges us as a cohesive entity and as communities of free individuals, committed to the dignity of existence. Cattle imperialism under any guise is an obscenity to humanity. So let me serve notice that we are about to commence a process of public sensitization; we hope even the police will join hands with the agenda as it progresses. “A special practical plea: now that the railways are being resurrected, let us make cattle wagons a priority. I grew up with the regular sight of those practical conveyances. It is time to bring them back.” Wole SOYINKA ARI. Kemta Housing Estate Abeokuta, Ogun State Feb. 11, 2021

Ortom to Buhari: Rein in herdsmen before they drag Nigeria into civil war

Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to rein in rampaging herdsmen now causing trouble everywhere before they drag Nigeria into another civil war. Governor Ortom, who made the plea at a press briefing in Abuja, said that he made the appeal as a patriot who is concerned about the president’s reputation and the fate of Nigeria as a country. Before the briefing, Ortom had delivered a letter dated February 8, 2021 to President Buhari with the caption: “Appeal to Act before Herdsmen drag Nigeria into civil war”. Governor Ortom said in the letter: “Mr. President, we are not oblivious of the challenges that the country has faced in the life of your Administration. These include two recessions, the COVID-19 global pandemic and the unprecedented nationwide security challenges resulting into the largest loss of lives and property since the Civil War. These security challenges especially have unsettled the country economically, socially and politically. “Your Excellency, these security challenges have assumed new dimensions where the now emboldened assailants and armed herdsmen daringly enforce their will on legitimate owners and occupants of ancestral lands. There are many areas of concern over the Federal Government’s actions and inactions, including the widely discussed concern over inequalities in key appointments. These have reinforced the perception that the Administration is not fair and just to all Nigerians. “Mr. President, please recall my earlier letters drawing your attention to the murderous activities of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and other armed Fulani socio-cultural groups and their leaders who publicly and brazenly claimed responsibility for the killings and destruction of property across States of the country. These groups and their leaders have also boasted that Nigeria belongs exclusively to them. “I am writing to you as a patriot who is concerned about your reputation and the fate of our dear country. I am imploring you once again to rise to the challenges of these times to avert the country’s drift to anarchy and disintegration, a situation that sycophants and praise-singers might be unwittingly shielding from you. “In 2015, Nigerians enthusiastically welcomed your return as a leader with a reputation for uprightness, fair-mindedness and integrity. The current situation is raising doubts in the minds of many Nigerians who had believed in you. Mr. President, your compatriots are looking up to you to act fast to redress the situation,” Ortom said in the letter.
