Sea pirates storm Bayelsa waterways, abduct six persons

Gun-Wielding sea kidnappers are now on the prowl on Bayelsa waterways from Odioma, Brass Local Government Area of the state; Nembe in Nembe Local Government Area and Yenagoa, the State capital. The kidnappers, suspected to be pirates, attacked speedboats and abducted six passengers on the Okpoama/Odioma and Nembe/Brass waterways. It was gathered that the abduction and sea robbery occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the victims, identified simply as Walter, from Odioma, was reportedly kidnapped around the fishing port in Dasaba, while Inerikuma Moses, known as Holy Moses, was abducted in the Okpoama creeks. Also, Alabo Elei, another victim, was reportedly kidnapped on his way from Nembe, though another version said that he was coming from Yenagoa, the state capital, when he was captured by the suspected gunmen. The incessant abduction of persons and passengers by gunmen have paralysed marine transportation in the Nembe and Brass areas. Maritime workers in the areas have suspended their operations, a development that has left boat passengers stranded. The state chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Ogoniba Ipingansi who also confirmed the incident, said that the waterways were no longer safe and all boats operating along Odioma, Akassa, Brass and Nembe were no longer loading as passengers were asked to turn back. “They attack some boats and rob all the passengers on Monday evening. They abducted three persons, they attacked another boat and kidnapped four. They used the earlier boat to release the first three persons.” A publisher of a community newspaper, Atlantic Express, Chief Bomolayon Ereku, said he could not travel to Yenagoa from his country home in Akassa due to protests by maritime workers and boat drivers over the incident. Apart from the six persons abducted on Tuesday, some others have been held hostage by gunmen in the last one week, a situation that has thrown residents in the coastal communities into panic. MEANWHILE, the state Commissioner of Police, Mike Okoli, has ordered immediate manhunt for the kidnappers attacking speedboats. Spokesman of the command, Asinim Butswat, while confirming the development, said the two separate incidents occurred simultaneously and that six passengers were allegedly kidnapped by the gunmen. He said operatives from the Marine Police, Nigerian Navy and Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe, had been combing the creeks in a joint operation to rescue the kidnapped victims and apprehend the kidnappers. “The command appeals to the good people of Bayelsa State to remain calm and volunteer useful information to enable the security agencies to fish out these hoodlums,” he said.

Gunmen kidnap journalist in Port Harcourt

The police in Rivers State on Wednesday have confirmed the abduction of a reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Port Harcourt. The police spokesperson in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, said the reporter, Chidiebere Onyia, was abducted by gunmen at about 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday around Woji area in Port Harcourt. Mrs Onyia, a mother of three, was said to be with some of her colleagues in her car when the kidnappers intercepted her vehicle, fired gunshots into the air, forced her out and then drove her away in their vehicle. She was returning home from her office at Choba area before the incident. “I was in the vehicle before the incident. Onyia drove me to my destination and continued to drop others,” said her colleague who had alighted from the car before the incident. “I was shocked to hear that gunmen ‘double-crossed’ her and took her away whilst abandoning the vehicle and other occupants. “She is a mother of three young children, we are begging her abductors to release her unconditionally,” she added. Meanwhile, the journalists’ union in Rivers State has condemned the journalist’s abduction as “inhuman and heinous”. “It is worrisome and regrettable that journalists are now victims of abduction and held for whatever reason. “A fundamental prerequisite for a free media is that journalists should be allowed to move freely in their efforts to serve the public,” the Nigeria Union of Journalists chapter in the state said in a statement signed by its chairman and secretary, Stanley Job and Ike Wigodo respectively. “What we are witnessing in the country today gives us serious concern, as less than two weeks ago, a reporter with The Punch, Okechukwu Nnodim, was abducted in Abuja, only to be released a few days ago. “Also recently, the Business Manager of Silverbird, Segun Owolabi, escaped assassination attempt in Port Harcourt after close of work. “And now, another journalist, Onyia, was kidnapped in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. This is unacceptable,” the union stated. The union charged the Rivers State Government and security agencies to arrest the kidnappers and ensure the safety of journalists in the state. The police spokesperson in the state, Mr Omoni, a superintendent of police, said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Joseph Mukan, has ordered the command’s tactical units to ensure the victim’s safe release. Boko Haram abducts three Nigerian customs officers

Boko Haram terrorists on Tuesday reportedly abducted three officers of the Nigeria Customs Services during an attack on Geidam, a town in Yobe State near the Nigerian border with Niger Republic. The insurgents had attacked the town late Tuesday evening. Security sources told PREMIUM TIMES that they took away the officers after driving into the town through the Geidam -Maine–Sorowa road. The officers were stationed at a checkpoint on the road when the insurgents swooped on them, a source said. The source revealed that the officers were posted from the zonal command of the Customs in Bauchi to Yobe at the border. “What happened is very unfortunate because some of our personnel got the information of the attack and left the area but those three officers we learnt did not get the information early,” the source told PREMIUM TIMES. “By the time they were trying to leave, the insurgents had closed in on them and took them away,” the source, a Customs officer, told our correspondent but asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to journalists. The police spokesperson in the state, Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the Tuesday attack on Geidam. Mr Abdulkarim said no casualty was recorded in the attack but the terrorists burnt an ambulance of the General Hospital, Geidam, and looted a shop. Asked about the abduction of the three Customs officers, Mr Abulkarim said “you can crosscheck the information with the Customs, please. I have no comment on that.” He said police officers informed him that the insurgents were engaged in a gun battle by Nigerian ground and air forces who deployed a fighter jet to repel the insurgents. The customs service has not spoken on the abduction and its spokesperson could not be reached at the time of this report. The attack came less than 24 hours after the new Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, visited troops of Operation Lafiya Dole on Monday. During the visit, Mr Attahiru, a major-general, promised to boost the morale of the soldiers with improved welfare and more equipment to end the over one decade insurgency in the region. A resident of Geidam, Idris Modu Geidam, told PREMIUM TIMES that the insurgents entered Geidam from the northern axis and started shooting sporadically. “They came from the Maine Sorowa road from the northern part of the town and started shooting heavily. Everybody ran into their houses or into the bush,” Mr Idris said. Maine–Sorowa is on the Nigeria-Niger Republic border and is about 45km from Geidam town. Geidam has been a recurrent target of the insurgents. In January, they attacked the town and abducted the District Head, who is still in their custody. They also looted foodstuff, burnt shops and took away medical drugs from the main hospital in the town.

I haven’t left PDP’ — Fani-Kayode counters Yahaya Bello’s defection claim

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of aviation, says he has not left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid rumours that he has jumped ship. Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi, on Tuesday, claimed that Fani-Kayode had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). Fani-Kayode, critic of the ruling government, had recently met with Bello and Mai Mala Buni, Yobe governor and chairman of APC caretaker committee. Addressing reporters after revalidating his APC membership in Okene on Tuesday, Bello said Fani-Kayode is now a member of the ruling party. He said the former minister approached him about his decision to defect from the PDP to the APC. Bello said the former minister will make a valuable contribution to the APC and ensure it retains power. “I have the mandate to mobilise, to sensitize, to educate and woo Nigerians into the party irrespective of their background. Our brother and friend, Chief Femi Fani Kayode has joined our party in good faith. He is joining our party to come and add his own positive energy and make contribution into ensuring that APC is a party to beat,” he had said. “Remember that Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was a foundation member of this great party. Due to misunderstanding, he decided to port elsewhere before. Now he has decided to join our party, approached me, and by the mandate given to me by the party, I must not segregate or discriminate against any individual. “Even if he has a different opening about the party before, about the government and he has seen the light, the reality and the needs to join the All Progressives Congress. “It is just important, nice, and sweet to welcome Chief Femi Fani-Kayode to come and join this party. Remember, this party does not belong to one individual, it belongs to all Nigerians. “We will welcome you with our hands wide open. So Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, you are welcome to our party. Come and make your contribution and ensure that this party is greater than any individual in Nigeria.” But in a tweet on Wednesday, Fani-Kayode debunked Bello’s claim, saying he is still a member of PDP. “Though we have had meetings across party lines and we are in a season of political consultation I have not left the PDP,” he tweeted.
