Give Us Grants To Start Ranching, Northern Governors Tell FG

Northern Governors on Tuesday said the Federal Government should provide funding for the establishment of ranches across the region. The Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Simon Lalong, during an appearance on Channels Television’s News @ 10 said the Governors have been in support of ranching for quite some time. And, with the rise of banditry – which he said was linked to cattle rustling – and the recent quit notices being bandied across the country, ranching offers the “the only way to control the insecurity,” Mr. Lalong said. “We were advising the federal government to also give grants to states that are ready with land,” he said. “We are not saying that it is compulsory for states that are not ready. But many states in the North are ready. “We need some grants to start so that these people will not be moving here and there. We need to also keep them in one place. It’s business. So definitely, that’s the only way to control the insecurity.” Lalong, who is the Executive Governor of Plateau State, said all stakeholders, including members of cattle herders associations across the country, were on board with the idea of ranching. “But there is this lack of funds to the state, there is lack of encouragement to the state,” he said. For example, Mr. Lalong noted, the Plateau State Government has readied 74,000 hectares for the ranching exercise but needs funding to develop the project. “When you start restricting people, you must provide alternatives,” he said.

NDLEA Seizes Cocaine Worth Over N32bn At Lagos Port

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA has continued its offensive action against drug barons and cartels in Nigeria with the latest seizure of 40 parcels of cocaine weighing 43.11kilogram (100.05pds), with an estimated street value of over N32 billion. The consignment containing the illicit drug was put under surveillance by operatives of the Tincan Command of the NDLEA for some days until two clearing agents showed up on Monday, February 8, 2021 to clear it. According to the Commander, Tincan Port Command of the NDLEA, Sumaila Ethan, the two clearing agents were promptly arrested and the consignment, which was brought into Nigeria from Bazil on board a vessel marked MV SPAR SCORPIO, properly searched. “After a thorough search, we discovered 40 compressed parcels, which after laboratory investigations tested positive to cocaine. The two clearing agents have been taken into custody while we continue with the investigation. “The seizure is no doubt an attestation to the renewed vigour in the operations of the agency. “We appreciate our Chairman/Chief Executive, Gen. Buba Marwa who provided guidance all through the operations”, the Commander, Sumaila Ethan stated while briefing the media on Tuesday at the Ikoyi office of the agency. The Tincan port seizure is coming on the heels of similar ones at the Lagos and Abuja airports as well as from the FCT, Edo, Katsina, Nasarawa, and Benue state Commands in the last three weeks. While commending the Commander, officers, and men of the Tincan Port Command for the operation, Gen. Marwa charged them and other Commands across the country to remain vigilant and on red alert. “The successes we’re recording in the last three weeks can only serve as a challenge to raise the bar and do more. We’ll continue to do our best to motivate the officers and men of the agency and we expect full commitment, dedication to work and discipline in return so that we can collectively achieve the goal of ridding our nation of illicit drugs,” he stated.

I’m meeting APC leaders, others to save Nigeria – Fani-Kayode

In an attempt to clear thickening cloud over his meeting with APC leaders, Fani-Kayode in several tweets on his official Twitter handle, @realFFK, said he met with them to discuss the “state of the nation, national issues, party politics and the way forward,” adding that he would meet other leaders across party lines to save Nigeria from imploding. He tweeted: “Yesterday, I had the honour and privilege of having a very productive and important meeting with the National Chairman of the APC, Governor Mai Buni of Yobe State and Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. We discussed the state of the nation, national issues, party politics and the way forward. “These meetings are wide-ranging and ongoing and I am delighted to be involved in them. Despite the obvious benefits and wisdom in this noble initiative, it amazes me that some people should feel that it is wrong for me to sit with other leaders in the country to discuss issues which touch and concern the national cohesion, future and stability of our country. This is a time in which we must set all our differences aside, build bridges and come together as one lest our country drifts into fratricidal butchery and civil war. “It is right and proper for us to talk and to attempt to join hands across political, religious and regional lines to save Nigeria. I can and will never compromise or jettison my core fundamental principles for any reason and I stand firmly on my honestly held opinion that we need to enthrone equity, justice and fairness in this country for it to survive. I also believe in restructuring the country and in a vigorous and effective fight against terrorism. “The fact that I am in talks with leaders from a cross-section of pol. parties, including the ruling party, does not in any way derogate from this and does not mean that I will ever change those views. The next few months will be critical in terms of whether or not our country will survive as one and I believe that if we want it to be so, dialogue, building bridges and collaboration, even with those that you may disagree with on some issues, is vital and inevitable. That was the purpose of our meeting. Permit me to add the following for the record. I will always stand for justice and I will never cease to oppose evil. “Yet the greatest evil that we are confronted with today is the prospect of a second civil war. Despite our differences, as leaders and statesmen, we must all sheath our swords and ensure that we never go down that path. May God help our country and may He guide us all.”

Nurses protest over half salary in Ondo

The Ondo State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), on Tuesday, protested and disrupted the meeting of the leadership of the union over the payment of half salary by the state government. The angry nurses who passed a vote of no confidence on the leadership of their union over their refusal to call for strike action, saying the leaders had compromised and expressed their readiness to pull out of the Joint Health Workers Union. The nurses armed with placards of various inscriptions, such as ‘Represent us well or leave,’ ‘We move out of JOHESU,’ ‘Serve us well to serve the Community well. A hungry man is an angry man,’ ‘Nurses have the largest number in the health sector. We can stand alone.’ demanded for strike action over payment of 50 per cent salary for the month of November 2020. All attempts by the leadership of NANNM in the state to pacify the protesting nurses failed to yield positive results as they sent the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Oluwole Adeleye, away from the ground. They explained that they can no longer continue to work on an empty stomach and will not return to the office until all their allowances are paid. Speaking on behalf of the protesting nurses, Ogunsi Adegbowale, said the leadership of NANNM had failed them and said, “this process is for us to get what is due to us. We are tired of collecting half salary. “How can you pay essential workers half salary? We are being neglected. When others went on strike, we remained at our duty post. We have waited for our leadership but they have failed us. The state NANNM must issues ultimatum for a strike today. We are also tired of JOHESU. We can stand alone. “We came to realise that our leaders agree to collect half salary. We were not carried along. We have families to feed. Some of us got N18,000 or N20,000. Some also got minus. They are owing us several other allowances. During the COVID-19 we were still working. “We are protesting because our leaders are not representing us well. That 50 per cent is not acceptable to us. Since then our leaders have not spoken to us. We wrote to them but they refused to respond which was why we came to meet them here. We do not want wishy-washy leaders to represent us.” The state chairman of NANNM, Olumiye Kehinde, said there was no notice for strike action by Ondo nurses and expressed surprise over the invasion of the venue of the SEC meeting. Kehinde said, ” I tried to explain the issue at hand so that we can have concrete dialogue at the next meeting. The SEC is the constituted organ to call for strike after meeting. “I moved off to talk to our members to allow the meeting to hold but the security agent took me away when the place was rowdy. “There is no strike today in Ondo by Nurses. They know how a strike action is called. When you want to go on strike you must give notices of 21 days, seven days and in between, the government may call for dialogue. They know the rules. You cannot just go on strike with 48 hours notice. “The way forward is for us to constitute SEC but members didn’t allow us to finish the issue. There is no 48 hours ultimatum by nurses to go on strike in Ondo. They knew they must go to their workplace. You must be a nurse before becoming a NANNM member. We will call for SEC when the situation improves.” The Ondo NLC chairman, Comrade Oluwole Adeleye, said he was not at the Nurses’ meeting to address them but to prevent a pandemonium. I was not there to brief them. I was called about a pandemonium there and I went there. I had to call security agents and they whisked the chairman away.” he said.
