El-Zakzaky’s Wife Never Contracted COVID-19, Says NCoS

Prison authorities in Kaduna say Zeenat El-Zakzaky, wife of leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, never contracted COVID-19. The Nigerian Correctional Service says result of a test on Zeenat, who has been in detention alongside her husband in Kaduna, showed she tested negative for COVID-19. The test was conducted in collaboration with Kaduna state government, her personal physician and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. “Happily, the test result has been released and the inmate, including her contacts have no trace of COVID-19 virus,” said Francis Enobore, national public relations officer for NCoS. “It is important to state with emphasis that Zeenat El-Zakzaky never contracted COVID-19 infection as was alleged.” Her son had earlier announced she tested positive after a visit by her personal physician and a test. It prompted groups to call for the release of the couple amidst concern about possible flare up of infection among inmates. Prison authorities denied knowledge of her condition, insisting they were “not convinced with the purported infection story”. A court order to move her to a government hospital within the state capital was overturned before a second test. El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in detention since 2015 after some of his followers clashed with soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna. El-Zakzaky is standing trial over allegations of culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace, among other charges. Their stay at the correctional facility in Kaduna started after the couple returned from a botched medical trip in India.

Fani Kayode, four PDP govs plan defection to APC

In what is being described as a major move ahead of the 2023 presidential election , the leadership of the All Progressives Congress has begun talks with four Peoples Democratic Party governors with the aim of getting them to defect to the ruling party. It was gathered in Abuja , on Monday , that a former Minister of Aviation , Chief Femi Fani -Kayode, had met with the Caretaker Chairman of the APC , Mai Mala Buni ; and Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State . A high ranking member of the APC informed The PUNCH that while it was true that the party leadership has reached out to Fani- Kayode , the former minister had not yet made any commitment . The source, however , described the meeting as fruitful and that “ things are looking bright . ” He said , “ Fani – Kayode met with Yahaya Bello and Buni on Sunday for two hours . It is all about politics of 2023 and the recent registration drive of the APC. “ Fani -Kayode has not made any commitment yet but discussions are still ongoing. ” When asked to reveal the identities of the four PDP governors planning to defect , the source said it would be unwise to do so at this point. He explained that the governors were still waiting for certain conditions to be met before making their move . The source further explained that, “ The four governors want assurances that the APC structure in their respective states would be handed over to them once they defect as has been the tradition . That is what is being discussed . “ Some people will also leave APC soon from the look of things. You will keep seeing such realignment ahead of 2023, ” he said . The PUNCH gathered that the four PDP governors in question are unhappy with what they described as the alleged personalisation of the party by the Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Wike and his Sokoto State counterpart, Aminu Tambuwal , because of their 2023 ambitions. Fani- Kayode could not be reached for comment on Monday . Fani- Kayode had earlier met with Governor Bello in his Wuse Zone 6 residence in Abuja before he led the former Minister to the party chairman ’ s Guest House .

FG Will Replace BVN, Others With NIN – Pantami

The Federal Government is in the process of replacing the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and other data collected by data collecting institutions with the National Identity Number (NIN), the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has said. Pantami disclosed this after monitoring the NIN enrolment process at telecom operators’ offices in Abuja on Monday. “I Made a presentation to National Economic Sustainability Committee and I drew the attention of CBN Governor that we need to replace BVN with NIN because the BVN is a bank policy while NIN is a law because it has been established by law so the strength of the law wherever you go is not the same with a policy of one institution”, the minister said. He said the NIMC database is the primary one in the country that each and every institution should make reference to. He said: “On the board of NIMC, CBN governor is a member, DG DSS is a member, Chairman of FIRS is a member, INEC Chairman, Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), National Population Commission and the Nigeria Immigration Service are all members of the board and this is to show you that it is primary database that every institution in the country should make reference to, when it comes to data protection regulations, we are in the forefront in Africa today”. He said with NIMC database, the level of security is 99.9 percent. According to him, there is no database that is 100 percent secured, “the highest you can go, I think we are there”. He said FG came up with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation to guarantee safety of all data collected in the country. He said: ” At our disposal, we take care of data and make sure that security is excellent and we don’t allow anybody to compromise with the content because it is a trust from our citizens given to us.” Meawhille, at the MTN office in Maitama, Pantami was told that people who had enrolled before couldn’t have their data verified on the database, but the minister said the federal government was working to fix the issue. “We are working on that, they are being verified but it is slow due to the high numbers of request. We are working on coming up with one verification and we do hope that the issue will be resolved soon”, he said.

Nigeria to receive first batch of BUA-purchased vaccines next week

Firm commits to purchase of 5 million AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines BUA, one of Africa’s largest conglomerates, yesterday, said it has paid for one million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for Nigeria through the AFREXIM Vaccine programme in partnership with CACOVID. These doses of the vaccine, which should be delivered by next week, according to the firm, will be the first delivery of Vaccines to Nigeria since the COVID-19 vaccines became available. This development effectively pushes Africa’s most populous nation to the front of the queue in vaccine procurement. The Guardian had on Monday, reported that immunising more than 200 million Nigerians could gulp over N2 trillion, as the Federal Government might require N921.2 billion to vaccinate 140 million people in one year. There have been concerns about Nigeria’s ability to obtain vaccines despite lofty targets by the Federal Government. According to BUA, the vaccines will be distributed free to Nigerians at no cost. Speaking on this development, Founder of BUA, Abdul Samad Rabiu thanked the President of the Afrexim Bank, Dr. Benedict Oramah for making the purchase possible and the Nigerian Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, for coordinating the process through the CACOVID Private Sector partnership. According to him, “BUA decided to secure these 1million vaccines by paying the full amount for the vaccines today because these vaccines became available only last week through AFREXIM. “We expect the vaccines to be delivered within the next 14 days and hope priority will be given to our frontline workers who have committed their lives to managing the pandemic. “In addition to this, BUA is committing to purchase 5 million doses for Nigeria as soon as they become available through this same arrangement.”, Rabiu added. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday that Nigeria and other African countries were not barred from accessing COVID-19 vaccines through the Global Assess Facility, COVAX. COVAX, a WHO-backed programme, was set up to divide a billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines across 92 low and middle-income countries. Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Walter Mulombo, said the international health agency is supporting all countries to access vaccines as quickly as possible.

We’re not in a hurry to confirm ex-service chiefs as non-career ambassadors, says Senate

Ahead of Tuesday’s resumption of plenary by the National Assembly, the Senate has said it won’t be in a hurry to confirm immediate past service chiefs as non-career ambassadors. President Muhammadu Buhari had last week sent the names of the former service chiefs to the Senate for confirmation as non-career ambassadors barely nine days after they resigned from their respective positions. The ambassador-designates are retired Defence Chief, Abayomi Olonisakin; former Army Chief, Lieutenant Tukur Buratai; former Naval Chief, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas and former Air Chief, Sadique Abubakar. Speaking with journalist on Monday, Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abubakar Abdulllahi, disclosed that the letter from President Buhari would be read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday. He, however, disclosed that the former service chiefs would be subjected to screening by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs before their confirmation. He said:” We promised to reconvene on January 26th but because of the registration being undertaken by the All Progressives Congress (APC), we had to extend our resumption by about two weeks. “Now that we are resuming, some of the issues you have raised about the nomination of the service chiefs as ambassadors, I think we have not actually brought it to the floor of the Senate yet. Communication would be read hopefully by the Senate President tomorrow and whatever happens, we will pass it on to the Committee on Foreign Affairs which will now do its deliberation. “As leader of the Senate, this will be brought to the floor of the Senate. The committee will do its work and after that, they will bring the report to the Senate. I am sure all the questions will not escape the committee. I don’t want to preempt them. Let them do what is just and right and let the apply all the criteria for appointment of ambassadors for the country.”

Senate to debate farmers, herders clash Tuesday

AS the National Assembly resumes today, after 48 days at home following the Christmas and New Year holiday, the Senate declared Monday that problem of insecurity emanating from incessant clashes between Herders and farmers across the country, will be thoroughly debated, with a view to coming up with lasting solutions. Answering questions from Journalists Monday in Abuja ahead of resumption, Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, All Progressives Congress, APC, Kebbi North said that a motion for the debate on Farmers/ Herders clashes , particularly the recent ones that happened in Ondo and Oyo States has already been prepared by the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice, APC Ondo North. According to him, upon presentation of the motion, other Senators will discuss the issue to the core with good prayers adopted. Meanwhile, the Senate has put the fate of the former Service Chiefs nominated for Ambassadorial positions by President Muhamnadu Buhari in the hands of members of its Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, APC, Bauchi North led Committee on Foreign Affairs for confirmation or rejection . The Senate leader who noted that the problem of Farmers/ Herders clashes is largely local , requiring local solutions which can be given by respective state government and Local Government Councils, said, “The Senate is disturbed that such crises in addition to armed banditry and Boko Haram insurgency , remain unabated and there can’t be development where there is no peace , the very reason , state actors at the grassroots need to be more involved in stopping them.” Senator Abdullahi who noted that interventions from all fronts against the crises are urgently required as ethnic enterpreneurs are trying to take advantage of the ugly situation, said, ” With some kind of ethnic coulaouration of the Herders / Farmers clashes , urgent attentions are required at various levels of government to prevent them from further escalation . “These are kind of crises that must be addressed promptly and squarely in preventing ethnic entrepreneurs from hijacking the whole situation and putting the country in danger . “There are existential issues that have set communities that have hitherto lived together peacefully, against each other either for political advantage or political matters. ” I think these are issues that should be resolved at the local level either through dialogue anchored on the spirit of give and take. “Whatever crises that are involved should be resolved by political leaders at appropriate levels be it, at the National Assembly, at the level of the Governors, local Government and even councillorship level where state actors are expected to sit down with their people so that a lot of these issues can be articulated and addressed by the local population. ” Infact , this is what the Governors at their levels should do and not always running to the presidency, to solve one dispute here and there . “This is a federation and we are all politically responsible leaders. I can assure you that in no distant time, these intercommunual conflagrations would be resolved. ” So, hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday this week, a general motion that will be sponsored by the deputy Senate leader, Ajayi Borroficce, will be debated on the floor of the Senate.” On the fate of the former Service Chiefs , scaling the hurdle of Senate Confirmation as Ambassadorial nominees , the Senate leader said ” Communications for the confirmation would be read hopefully by the Senate president tomorrow and whatever happen we will pass it on to the committee on foreign affairs and then the committee on foreign affairs will now do its deliberation. “I am not one under this situation to preempt whatever the committee is going to decide because the committee is made up of several responsible and experienced senators who have also been ambassadors themselves so they will know exactly what are required for people to be appointed as ambassadors to represent the country in whatever country. “As leader of the Senate this will be brought to the floor of the Senate. The committee will do its work and after that they will bring the report to the Senate. I am sure all the questions will not escape the committee. ” I don’t want to preempt them. Let them do what is just and right and let them apply all the criteria for appointment of ambassadors for the country which will be the basis of determining the fate of the nominees.”

IGP didn’t pay N2bn for tenure extension —Police

The Nigeria Police Force has said that the tenure extension of the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, was not paid for . The PUNCH reported that the IGP ’ s tenure was extended by three months by the President Muhammadu Buhari The Minister of Police Affairs , Mohammad Dingyadi who made the announcement said the extension was necessary to give room for the proper selection of a successor. However, the police, in a statement issued on Monday , described as untrue a report ( not by The PUNCH ) that the tenure extension was purchased by the IGP for N 2bn. “ The Police High Command has described as untrue , unfounded, defamatory and libellous, the publication dated February 07, 2021, which alleged that the IGP paid over 2 Billion Naira for the tenure extension , ” the statement said . “ The Force wishes to state categorically that the extension of service of the IGP was strictly the prerogative of the President and was never paid for as maliciously reported in the publication. “ The insinuations that the IGP did not “ celebrate ” his extension smacks of ignorance and a pathetic misplacement of priority . “ The extension does not call for merry-making or celebration but a time for more work , rededication to duty and selfless service to the nation . “ The IGP , while assuring the nation of an unwavering commitment by the Force under his leadership , to improved service delivery , safety and security of the citizenry, enjoins members of the public to disregard and discountenance the publication as evidently untrue and unfounded. The IGP is undistracted and the Force remains motivated and committed to delivering on its mandate, especially the task of neutralizing current and emerging internal security threats . The statement added that the IGP has directed his legal team to commence legal actions against the online news platform .

My love for Buhari, Buratai list achievements

Tukur Buratai, immediate past chief of army staff, says he performed well while in office. Speaking with reporters at the weekend in Abuja, Buratai said there is a “compendium” of his achievements at the Defence Headquarters to speak for his stewardship. He spoke on the sidelines of a gala night organised by members of the 29th Regular Course Association of the Nigerian Defence Academy. The retired lieutenant general and other ex-service chiefs were recently appointed as ambassadors by President Muhammadu Buhari days after. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has since criticised the appointment, alleging that the president is shielding them from prosecution. However, the presidency described their appointments as a reward for hard work. The former army chief said he will not respond to the opposition party because he is not a politician. “It’s an honourable retirement and also an honourable appointment. I’m not a politician, so I have no word for the opposition. I have done well,” he said. “I am happy that in July last year, my officers at the army headquarters compiled a compendium of my achievements. I can’t even remember all the projects that we have executed. “Is it in terms of infrastructure? Is it in terms of capacity building? Is it in terms of training? Since I was appointed, there was never a dull moment in terms of training. “Remember the various exercises – training exercises from ‘Python dance’, ‘Crocodile smile’, and even the latest one ‘Exercise Sahel Sanity’. “I think you can write volumes and volumes of books in terms of the achievements depending on the perspectives you want to take.” While in office, Buratai and the former service chiefs received knocks for not handling the insurgency in the north-east very well.
