Sunday Igboho: My family is worried… but no human can kill me

Sunday Adeyemo, a youth leader better known as Sunday Igboho, says his family is worried over the cause he has been fighting. In the past weeks, Igboho has been in the news for asking herders, mostly of Fulani extraction, to leave some parts in Oyo and Ogun. Igboho had accused the herders of kidnapping and killing indigenes of the communities, and also destroying their farmlands. In January, one of his houses in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, was gutted by fire by those “opposed to his fighting,” but in an interview with PUNCH on Sunday, Igboho said no human being can kill him and he will not be distracted. “I am not afraid of anything or anyone but God. God is the owner and controller of every soul. It is only God who can kill me. No human being can kill me, so I cannot be afraid of any mortal,” he said. “My children challenge and persuade me to quit every day. They wave the caution sign to me every time. My wife is also very worried about the cause that I fight but I have to do this for the liberation of my people, anyway. But I am equally worried for my people who are being dehumanised and oppressed in their own territory for no just reason. Those who should address the issue just fold their arms and watch because they are compromised. This struggle is for the good of all so that when I am gone they would not live in subjection.” Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, had kicked against the quit notice Igboho had given the Fulanis in Ibarapa local government area of Oyo, but Igboho said he can work in harmony with the governor in as much as “he recognises the fact that we have the fundamental right to secure our people and to protect their interest.” There have been concerns since Igboho issued the threat, but he said the problem is with those in between them and the government as they are creating undue tension. “We are sure that the governor is able to feel the pulse of the people who are feeling the heat from the killer herdsmen and we believe that he would rise up to the occasion and do the needful,” he said. “If they call me for a meeting to discuss the burning issue of security to end the impunity by the killer herders, I shall gladly oblige. I am ready for any genuine approach to stopping the herders’ madness against our parents, brothers and sisters in Yorubaland. Why should our people, harmless for that matter, be going through all the horrible experiences without getting justice? And everybody folds their arms, looking on as if nothing is wrong.” He called on Yoruba people to be united and stop playing politics with the lives of the people. He said royal fathers, politicians, the youth and the elders should speak with one voice, and there should not be any discord in Yorubaland. He said Yoruba leaders should remember “that the first Oyo Empire was mowed down by this same set of people. The second Oyo Empire at Igboho Oyo was equally destroyed by the same people. This time, our people must be protected by all Yoruba people.”

Cryptocurrencies breed criminality, terrorism – CBN fires back at critics

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said cryptocurrencies promote illegal activities and raise risks, among other reasons. It said this on Sunday in a statement regarding various comments and reactions following its recent reminder to Deposit Money Banks to desist from transacting in /and with entities dealing in cryptocurrencies. The CBN stated , “ The recent regulatory directive became necessary to protect the financial system and the generality of Nigerians ( including the youth population ) from the risks inherent in crypto assets transactions, which have escalated in recent times, with dire consequences for the integrity of the financial system and financial stability . “ Due to the fact that cryptocurrencies are largely speculative, anonymous and untraceable they are increasingly being used for money laundering , terrorism financing and other criminal activities. “ Small retail and unsophisticated investors also face high probability of loss due to the high volatility of the investments in recent times . “ In light of these realities and analyses, the CBN has no comfort in cryptocurrencies at this time and will continue to do all within its regulatory powers to educate Nigerians to desist from its use and protect our financial system from activities of fraudsters and speculators . ” The CBN said for those who were not conversant with the universe of cryptocurrencies , it was important to state that cryptocurrencies “ are digital or virtual currencies issued by largely anonymous entities and secured by cryptography . ” It stated , “ Cryptography is a method of encrypting and hiding codes that prevent oversight , accountability, and regulation. “ While there are a number of cryptocurrencies now in circulation , Bitcoin was the first to be introduced in 2009, and now accounts for about 68 percent of all cryptocurrencies. “ As regards our recent policy pronouncement, it is important to clarify that the CBN circular of February 5, 2021 did not place any new restrictions on cryptocurrencies, given that all banks in the country had earlier been forbidden , through CBN’ s circular dated January 12, 2017, not to use, hold , trade and/or transact in cryptocurrencies. “ Indeed , this position was reiterated in another CBN press release dated February 27, 2018. “. The CBN said its position on cryptocurrencies was not an outlier as many countries , central banks, international financial institutions , and distinguished investors and economists had also warned against its use . It stated that they had all made similar pronouncements based of the significant risks that transacting in cryptocurrencies portend which include risk of loss of investments, money laundering, terrorism financing , illicit fund flows and criminal activities. It stated that China, Canada , Taiwan, Indonesia , Algeria , Egypt, Morocco, Bolivia , Kyrgyzstan , Ecuador , Saudi Arabia, Jordan , Iran , Bangladesh, Nepal and Cambodia had all placed certain level of restrictions on financial institutions facilitating cryptocurrency transactions.

Stop impunity, protection of killer herdsmen, Archbishop tells FG

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos , Most Rev. Alfred Martins, has asked the Federal Government to punish Fulani herdsmen who are perpetrating evil in the country. Martins, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Mission House, Catholic Church of Resurrection, Magodo , Lagos , on Saturday said the feeling among many Nigerians was that the killer herdsmen were being protected by the Federal Government . He said , “ The government needs to stop impunity. There are people who commit crimes , whoever they may be, they should be apprehended and brought to book. The fact that the government has not done that; that is why people operate with impunity. These rogue herdsmen occupy the forest areas, they just do whatever they like and because nobody seems to care . “ The impression that is left in the minds of people is that the criminals are being protected . For what reason they are being protected , it is difficult to know ’ , but when you see people occupying other peoples’ land and ensuring that those people cannot use their land in peace , killing , raping and destroying properties , naturally the impression is that they are being protected . “ We hope the new service chiefs will take seriously their primary task of ensuring security all over the country . There is no part of the country that is free at this point , and so we hope that the new security chiefs will do their work and justify the position they have been given . ” The associate priest of Catholic Church of Resurrection , Magodo , Rev . fr . Paul Bastos , stressed the need for Muslims and Christians to live together in love.

FG owes varsity workers over N150bn earned allowances

The Federal Government is owing the university workers, under the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Union of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU), over N150 billion earned allowances. The money spans over nine years of unpaid allowances, as the government has not been able to pay since 2011 to date; as jointly agreed in the 2009 agreement signed by the Federal Government with the respective unions. While the NAAT members were owed N71 billion since 2011, SSANU and NASU said their members, under the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU were owed over N81 billion, also since 2011. The three unions have demanded for the payment of the earned allowances; and coupled with other contentious issues such as IPPIS and general poor state of the university system, two of the unions, SSANU and NASU have declared industrial actions. While SSANU and NASU have commenced the strike last Friday, the NAAT said it would not go on strike for now until the contentious issues are exhaustively discussed with the government, since the union is already holding meetings with the Federal Government. But the NAAT has demanded for additional release of fund from the government to add to the N10 billion given to the three unions from the initial N40 billion released recently. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was given N30 billion from the total N40 billion for the payment allowance recently, while NAAT, SSANU and NASU were given N10 billion. Specifically, NAAT demanded for immediate release of N30 billion to pay its members, to forestall them from going on strike. Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, the President of NAAT, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, said the government owed his members N71 billion, and demanded immediate payment of half of the total sum. He said: “We already told government. The earned allowances being owed our members is N71 billion, my union and members alone because while ASUU has been paid up to 2016, our own members are struggling to be paid up to 2012. “In most universities, our members are being owed up to 2011. So, we have also demanded that 50 per cent of what is being owed our members should be paid to us, which translate to N30 billion.” Comrade Nwokoma added: “We want government to improve on the N10 billion allocated to the three unions. It is skewed against the three unions, it is unfair. If you want peace in the universities there must be justice, there must be equity.” The NAAT president, however, pointed out that the union has not totally written off going on strike, saying “we will review our stand. If the government, out of our patriotism thinks that the union can be taken for granted, then we will review our stand, we would go on strike.” Also speaking with our correspondent, the SSANU National Vice President (West), Comrade Abdulssobur Salaam, said SSANU and NASU members are being owed over N81 billion. He, however, demanded the release of the Forensic Audit report carried out to determine who and what have been paid since 2017, adding that the report of the investigation and their findings have not been released till now. He said: “The amount being owed as Earned Allowances for SSANU and NASU is in excess of N80 billion and spans from 2011 to 2021 (ten years). The specific figures may be difficult to determine and that is the reason why we demanded the outcome of the Forensic Audit report since 2017. The government set up a forensic audit investigation but since 2017, the committee has not made its findings public.”
