PDP should stop defaming former Service Chiefs, Presidency warns

The Presidency wishes to dismiss the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) attack over the widely praised nomination of the former heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Military Intelligence to the Senate for confirmation as non-career ambassadors. Garba Shehu, President Buhari’s senior special assistant on media a d publicity said this in a statement on his Facebook page. Garba said, “This transition is normal in decent democratic societies. “But the newspapers and online media are full of pages of laughable criticisms of the President and former Service Chiefs by the party, the latest of which was the false claim that they were nominated as ambassadors so as to shield them from trial by the International Criminal Court, ICC. “How on earth can decent people run down hardworking professionals who have put in their best to defend their country? How can you run down your country and equate that with normal political dialogue and opposition? “What is baffling about this false and baseless assertion is that this is coming, not from Boko Haram terrorists who the military kept largely in check and confined to a known section of the country, Sambisa, but from a so-called leading opposition party that fraudulently kept power for 16 years and is nursing the hope of one day returning to office as an elected government. “What is more, under these corrupt politicians the insurgency conquered large swathes of territory-18 Local Government Areas. “Pray, if a political party, in a blind search for power can spurn the interest of the nation, embrace the language of hate campaign against the country’s military as enunciated by the terrorists, as the PDP does, what will be left for the Boko Haram to do? PDP is doing Boko Haram’s work! Speaking further, “We live in an evidence-based era for arguments. If the PDP has evidence of rights abuse against the military in the war against terrorists, wouldn’t it be beneficial to the nation that they publish such evidence instead of levying grave accusations without proves? And to ask, in whose interest are they making these accusations that lack any depth? “To add, we don’t think the ICC, which these childish calls are being made needs to be lectured on democratic values and human rights by the PDP. Who are they, and what is their record in office to lecture anyone? Zaki Biam and Odi where thousands of citizens were on record, the genocide operation comes to mind. Did they report themselves to the ICC? According Garba, “PDP’s attacks on the ambassadorial nominations should be seen in the context of the opposition party’s track record as a university of liars, whose modus operandi is to propagate lies. “The President is rewarding hard work and exceptional sacrifice by a set of military leaders who gave their best to the nation and will be remembered, sooner than later, for their contributions to the security and survival of Nigeria as one nation. They should be allowed to move to the next level. “This is so that their examples will help to inspire others if given the opportunity to serve, ” he concluded.

Imo north: Confusion as appeal Court affirms Ibezim’s disqualification as APC candidate

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Saturday, upheld the disqualification of Sir Chuwuma Ibezim as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the Senatorial by-election that held in Imo North on December 5, 2020. The appellate court, in a unanimous decision by a three-man panel of Justices, affirmed the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to remove Ibezim’s name from the list of candidates for the by-election, after it found him guilty of submitting falsified documents. The high court judgement followed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1229/2020, which was filed against Ibezim by Asomugha Elebeke. Trial Justice Inyang Ekwo had in the judgement he delivered on December 4, 2020, barely 24 hours to the by-election, disqualified Ibezim for allegedly making false statements/declarations in the affidavit and documents he tendered to both the APC and INEC. The court held that evidence before it showed that Ibezim presented falsified and uncertified photocopies of his West African Examination Council, WAEC, certificate. Cited as 2nd and 3rd Defendants in the matter were the APC and INEC. Specifically, Justice Ekwo found that the WASC certificate that was submitted by the 1st Defendant bore two different and irreconcilable names, Ibezim Chukwuma Frank and Ibezim Francis Chukwuma. The court held that Ibezim was “not qualified/ eligible for nomination to contest the Imo North Senatorial By-Election, having made false declarations in the affidavit and certificates he submitted to INEC for the purpose of contesting the IMO North Senatorial by-election, and the irreconcilable conflicts in his names”. It, therefore, barred INEC from accepting him as the candidate of the APC for the senatorial by-election Dissatisfied with the verdict, Ibezim took the case before the appellate court where he lost on Saturday. The appellate court, in its lead judgement that was read by Justice Stephen Adah, said it found no reason to interfere with the verdict of the trial court which is described as “unassailable”. Consequently, it dismissed Ibezim’s appeal for want of merit, though it declined to award any cost against him. The Supreme Court had on Friday, also dismissed an appeal Senator Ifeanyi Araraume filed to challenge a Court of Appeal judgement that sacked him as the authentic candidate of the APC in the same Imo North Senatorial by-election. The apex court, in two separate unanimous decisions by a five-man panel of Justices led by Justice Amina Augie, declined to set-aside the verdict of the Court of Appeal in Owerri, which had earlier declared Frank Ibezim as the candidate of the APC for the poll. It held that the appellate court was right to nullify the judgement of the Federal High Court in Owerri, which had recognised Ararume as APC’s senatorial candidate. It will be recalled that INEC had at the end of the Imo North Senatorial by-election, returned the APC as the winner. The electoral body based its decision not to return any candidate for the party on the fact that there were many court decisions, for and against the two main contenders for the APC ticket- Ararume and Ibezim.

Obasanjo: It is sad that Nigerians are not preparing for the kingdom of God

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said developments and happenings in the country at the moment do not show that the people are preparing for the Kingdom of God. This is just as it has been revealed how his intervention helped to preserve the tomb of the Founder of the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, St. Moses Orimolade, in Ojokoro area of Lagos during the construction of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Obasanjo, who was the Guest of Honour during the dedication of the St. Moses Orimolade Holy Land, the Cenotaph of C&S Founder, on Saturday, noted that most people were acting as if everything starts and ends on Earth. “The situation we have in the country today does not show we are preparing for the kingdom of God but we have to be prepared. There is always a day of reckoning. Christianity was brought to us and many of our people made great contributions and they are unsung heroes now. Missionaries came but we have our own missionaries and leaders and Moses Orimolade was one of them. “It is because of the church that you and I have the assurance of salvation. Our own church leaders who paid their own prize also helped in spreading the gospel and we pray their efforts are not in vain,” he said. Commenting on the statement by the Master of Ceremonies earlier that it was his intervention that prevented the tomb of Orimolade from been removed and the church there not pulled down as military Head of State, Obasanjo said there was no reason the nation’s heroes should not be celebrated or acknowledged. “When I was told the road work would affect the tomb of Baba Orimolade and even the church set up there in his memory, I agreed that the road is bent to accommodate the preservation of the tomb and the church. “If I had insisted that the road should not be bent or the contractor insisted and I agreed, the body of Orimolade would have been exhumed and the church may not be here The action I took in the past, I don’t know it would result in what we are witnessing today and this edifice we are dedicating being here,” he said. In his sermon, Rev Dr Ademuyiwa Ajayi, whose sermon was titled ” Come and See, urged Christians to use every opportunity to evangelise for the Lord. He urged them not to be discouraged by their situations as God could use them for glorious things. The building was donated to the church by Rev. Mother Esther Ajayi.
