IPOB to Facebook: An accomplice to cruel man will surely get reward of cruelty

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has told Facebook and its local staff in Abuja and Lagos that an accomplice to a cruel man will surely get the reward of cruelty, warning them to desist from supporting injustice in Nigeria and do their job like an unbiased umpire or will be visited one day by the same evil people and group they have been shielding and supporting. IPOB also told Facebook that if not for the efforts of its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in the exposition of the atrocities of killer herdsmen and their alleged Fulani sponsors, their families in their communities would have today been overrun by herdsmen and terrorist, they are allegedly supporting and shielding. IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, reminded Facebook and its officials in Abuja and Lagos that the earlier they learn to do their job without bias and doing the bidding of corrupt government officials and agents, the better for them otherwise, their hobnobbing activities and playing accomplice to cruel men and their evil destructive group will surely find them and give them the reward of cruelty. IPOB’s statement read in part, “May we, therefore, remind all those compromised local staff of Facebook in Lagos and Abuja that but for Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, their families in their communities would have today been overrun by herdsmen and terrorists they have been supporting and shielding. We also want to remind them that an accomplice to a cruel man will surely get the reward of cruelty! This unholy act of Facebook and its local staff in Nigeria is only akin to what Britain and her allies did to Biafra during the genocidal war of 1967-70 when they imposed land, air and media blockade on Biafra in order to deny the truth about the ongoing genocide from coming out. “It seems Facebook does not want the atrocities of Fulani killer herdsmen to come the knowledge of the world but they have failed woefully. Facebook is today assisting an oppressive government that pampers, frees and settles ‘captured’ terrorists while doing nothing to protect or rehabilitate victims of terror. “But our message to Facebook is simple: no matter how hard you try to suppress the gospel of truth being preached by our leader, the struggle for Biafra liberation cannot be slowed down. On the contrary, our efforts will be intensified because Biafra restoration is a divine mandate that must be accomplished in this era. “We are very resolute in our resolve to restore Biafra and will not be deterred. If you like block all Biafran activists on your platform, we shall keep pushing on until Biafra is fully restored.”

FREDERICK NWABYFO: Eviction orders here and there will make us refugees in our own country

It takes just a moment of indignation to destroy; to cast down and cast out. It is easier to destroy than to build. And what is broken sometimes cannot be put together again. Why are we at daggers drawn with one another? Why are we at each other’s throat? Why the hate-slinging? In the south, the drumbeats of war are pounding, and in the north, the cavalrymen are assembling. But nobody wins in this family feud. No doubt, Nigeria is tottering on the precipice. This is perhaps one of the most precarious times in our democratic evolution since 1999. It is as if the emissaries of Hades are encamped in the country. Nobody wants to hear the other; everyone is yelling, seeking to drown out the obverse voice. But if we all at least take a pause and listen, we will see everyone is saying something that needs to be heard. No side – be it the north or the south – has made frail arguments on this freak of the time — eviction orders. Both sides have made well-founded points. On Tuesday, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), spoke up in defence of Fulani herders. He asked the president to order “the immediate arrest and prosecution of persons who are attacking the Fulani and setting the country on a very dangerous path,” adding that: “The Fulani will not be ejected from any Nigerian community only on the basis of being Fulani or herding cattle within the limits of laws and regulations.” On Wednesday, Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, condemned what he described as the “unlawful eviction” of citizens in the south, stating that every Nigerian reserves the right to choose where to reside. This is indisputable. No citizen should be made an alien in his own country. Crime has no ethnic face. The enemy are the bandits, and not all herders or the Fulani. The Fulani, themselves, are victims of the enterprise of these freebooters. We cannot win the fight against banditry and kidnapping when we colour the crime in the brushstrokes of ethnicity. Those pillaging towns and slaughtering citizens are not selective of their victims. Their only ethnicity is ransom, and their religion is violence. BUT HOW DID WE GET HERE? In January, Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, ordered herders to leave the state’s forest reserves. The order was not born out of detestation; it was due to the minatory performances of some criminal herdsmen in the state. Ondo had become the haunt of these devourers. The Olufon of Ifon, a first-class traditional ruler, was killed in the state by bandits. The wife of the chief of staff to the governor was kidnapped and released after ransom was paid. The daughter of Pa Fasoranti, Afenifere leader, was murdered on a road in the state. And there have been countless cases of kidnapping and murder linked to some herders in Ondo. So, Akeredolu’s ‘’eviction order’’ was a desperate reaction to a hopeless situation. If the federal government was alive to its responsibility of securing the country, that order would be needless. But the eviction order issued to herders in Ondo’s forest reserves struck the tinderbox. It set off a ripple of eruptive hostilities against the Fulani. A jangling figure in Oyo, Sunday Igboho, assumed potentate authority, he asked all herders to leave Ibarapa local government area of Oyo, where there have been kidnappings and murders by some herdsmen. Really, there is now a whiff of animus against the Fulani. There have been coordinate eviction orders to herders in Edo and Bayelsa states. Though the notices cannot stand constitutional interrogation, we must not forget we reached this minacious point because of government’s irresponsibility. LEADERS OF THE SOUTH RESPOND TO THE NORTH The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) did a riposte to the statement of the Northern Elders Forum. The group accused northern leaders of hypocrisy – of not speaking out against the criminal operations of some herdsmen in the south. The southern forum said: “PANDEF implores the northern elders and their surrogates to get off the high-horse. And the sooner, the better, for the country, and all of us. Nigeria belongs to all of us, no section owns the country more than the other; we are equal stakeholders. Where was the Northern Elders Forum when arm-wielding herdsmen were killing, harassing innocent citizens, and raping women in their farms? Northern elders did not realise then that they were setting the country on a dangerous path. Meyitti Allah Cattle Rearers group has been arrogantly conducting themselves like ‘landlords’ of Nigeria, without any demonstration. It is now that southern governors have begun taking appropriate steps to safeguard lives and livelihoods of their people, that northern elders have found their voice in defence of the herdsmen.’’ Again, the leaders of both divides have made well-grounded points. It is true that northern leaders, particularly those speaking up now in the defence of their own, did not speak out against the criminality of some herders in the south. But it is wrong that the reaction to that hypocrisy should be the targeting of the Fulani. Two wrongs do not make a right. At this point, we must deescalate the tension and tone down the caustic rhetoric; beat our swords into ploughshare, spears into pruning hooks, and embrace peace. We must learn to listen to one another. Eviction orders here and there will make us all refugees in our own country. If Nigeria burns, we all burn. BREAKING: Facebook blocks Nnamdi Kanu’s account, IPOB lampoons

Facebook, a social media platform, has blocked the account of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The account is said to have been blocked after a live broadcast on Tuesday. Checks by TheCable on Wednesday, showed that the account, which has more than 350,000 likes, was unavailable. “This Page Isn’t Available. The link may be broken, or the page may have been removed. Check to see if the link you’re trying to open is correct,” a notice on the page reads. In a statement, Emma Powerful, IPOB spokesman, accused Facebook of colluding with the federal government to suppress the “free flow of information”. Powerful said the group has the right to express its grievances, because herders are allegedly destroying their farms by feeding their cattle with the crops. “We strongly condemn this attitude of Facebook managers in Lagos and Abuja who collude with corrupt Nigerian government officials to suppress the free flow of information via their platform,” he said. “This unconscionable and reprehensible attitude amounts to partnering with perpetrators of human rights abuses and other criminal activities masterminded by the Nigeria state against innocent citizens. “Now that our leader has started exposing the atrocities of these wolves in human clothing, Facebook has decided to be an accomplice to mass murder and oppressive tendencies “But our message to Facebook is simple: no matter how hard you try to suppress the gospel of truth being preached by our leader, the struggle for Biafra liberation cannot be slowed down. On the contrary, our efforts will be intensified because Biafra restoration is a divine mandate that must be accomplished in this era.”

Chinese loan: Reps uncover over N5bn waiver illegally obtained by Chinese firm

The House of Representatives on Wednesday uncovered over N5 billion waiver granted to China Harbour on imported construction materials, despite the country’s commitment to the repayment of multi-billion dollar loan obtained from China. Speaking during the investigative hearing into the audit query issued by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation (oAuGF) against Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Wole Oke, frowned at the complacency of various regulatory agencies that approved such waivers in breach of due process and extant financial regulations, thereby leading to huge loss of revenue into the Federation Account. He expressed grave concern over flagrant breach of various policies and regulations guiding the waivers and capital allowances granted to some multinational companies and public quoted companies granted during 2014 and 2020. To this end, the Committee directed the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment to provide evidence of the capital allowance certificates granted to over 600,000 companies and other relevant documents during the period under review. Hon. Oke explained that the Auditor General in its query expressed concern over the depletion of revenue accruing to the “Federation Account is nose-diving and they (oAuGF) asked us that, why are we not filing the revenue profile of Customs? They said it should be audited, that’s what they said. “And so we called customs and they came to present the list. There are a lot of things like tax avoidance, tax avoidance is lawful but we are only checking the abuses. So that is what we are doing in a situation where you are based in Nigeria, import from France for example and the documents emanate from Mauritius! So all we want to establish is the goods from the manufacturer, is it the same pricing that is comes with from the manufacturer?” He further alleged that “some multinational companies indulge in the abuse of tax avoidance, transfer service schemes and they use that to undermine revenue generation in Nigeria. “So some of these companies float subsidiaries in tax haven countries and some of these companies are 100% owned by them; so they operate through their subsidiaries. The prices at which they buy from the manufacturers are not what is contained in the shipping documents. So by doing, they can even cut down 50 per cent of duty that they ought to have paid to Nigeria. And that is the issue the Auditor General is raising that collections by Nigeria Customs, collections by FIRS, the remittance by DPR and NNPC is nose-diving and that we should check it. “They are even particular about Customs that we should audit it and that is why we invited Nigeria Customs, and Nigeria Customs availed us in response to the Committee’s invitation submitted a list of over 600,000 companies, and like I said there is no how we can invite over 600,000 companies, we don’t even have the budget because it will cost us N1.2 billion to write them. So we have to do sampling to conform the fiat in the issues raised by Auditor General.” In the bid to end the flagrant abuse of the process, he underscored the need for relevant House Standing Committees including Finance, Customs and Excise, to escalate their oversight mandates in the bid to block leakages and level of impunity being perpetrated by the MDAs, noting that the exercise being carried out by the House Committee on Public Accounts is post-mortem. He also underscored the need for Standing Committees to have detailed information on the number of Shipping and cargo companies operating in the country, with the view to ascertain the details on importation and revenue due to the Federation. “The solution is that we should step up our oversight and ensure that nobody is undermining the revenue accruing to this country, either through these schemes I’ve mentioned or fraudulently. “Like in the case of China Harbour, China Harbour got a contract in Nigeria through contract financing and then you are claiming Duty Waiver of over N5 billion on items and materials that are available in Nigeria. They are importing them, they kill local industries, you are injuring us from both ends. ”We just have to resolve that the MD of China Harbour should cause appearance. All they are trying to do is to cover-up when it comes to capital flight they don’t mind, but when it comes to accountability they are running away. And those who granted the Duty waiver we must ask them and that’s why we invited the Ministry of Finance to cause the appearance to come and defend the duty waiver they gave to you. “A company that is bringing in cement when there is Dangote Plc producing in Obajana, we have in Okpella, Ewekoro, Ibesi and they also pay the duty, meanwhile they charge Dangote duty when they bring equipment! “As we speak today, do you how many ships are berthed today. Who cares?” Worried by the development, the Committee resolved to summon Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Secure and Anchorage Company responsible for the collection of revenue ranging between $3,000 to $4,000 per vessel at the ports. In their separate presentations, representatives of the companies invited, including A-Z Petroleum who have subsidiary companies; Longman (now Learn Nigeria) affirmed receipt of capital allowances on manor transactions carried out including books imported for free and printed overseas. In his ruling, Hon. Oke directed the Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Services to furnish us with records of A-Z Petroleum and its subsidiary companies, submit copies of audited accounts, capital allowances claims, and tax certificates issued. He also urged the Clerk to request the CAC Registrar General to also reveal the veil of A-Z Petroleum and the affiliate companies, the Particulars of Directors and Shareholders vis-à-vis annual returns.
