ISIS, al-Qaeda planning to penetrate Southern Nigeria, US warns

There are plans by terrorist groups, Al-Qaeda and ISIS to penetrate Southern Nigeria, the United States has warned the Nigerian government. The US says the dreaded groups are looking to make an inroad into Southern Nigeria, this is just as It confirmed that Al-Qaeda has started penetrating the north-western part of the country. In a media briefing, Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the US special operations command, Africa, said AlQaeda is also expanding to other parts of West Africa. According to report obtained from TheCable by Sunday Tribune, Anderson said the US will continue to partner with Nigeria in sharing intelligence “We have engaged with Nigeria and continue to engage with them in intel sharing and in understanding what these violent extremists are doing,” he said. “And that has been absolutely critical to their engagements up in the Borno state and into an emerging area of northwest Nigeria that we’re seeing al-Qaeda starting to make some inroads in. “So, this intelligence sharing is absolutely vital and we stay fully engaged with the government of Nigeria to provide them with an understanding of what these terrorists are doing, what Boko Haram is doing, what ISIS-West Africa is doing, and how ISIS and al-Qaeda are looking to expand further south into the littoral areas. Anderson regretted that despite successes recorded in previous years, there has been a setback, adding: “We as a community of international nations, keep thinking we have defeated them or we have put them on their back foot and that they’re just moments from disintegration.” Anderson said for international efforts to yield desired results in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, the government must take the lead. “When it comes to Nigeria in general, Nigeria, obviously, is a critical nation to West Africa. It is a critical nation and we realise that Nigeria is a lynchpin,” he said.

The NGF chairman further noted that while all governors will continue to pray for Governor Ortom, the attention of all evildoers must be drawn to the fact that not only will they continue to fail in their wicked acts, but they will also definitely be traced and punished for their crimes, no matter how long it takes. EXTRA: I hate hearing about abandoned projects ― Lalong

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau has said that he hates hearing about abandoned projects and would strive to complete all projects he initiated and some inherited ones before leaving office. Lalong stated this on Saturday while interacting with journalists after a media tour of ongoing projects in the state. The governor said that he sees it a waste when an administration leaves uncompleted projects and succeeding administrations’ abandon the projects in the name of politics. “In our vision we said that if projects initiated by the previous administration are viable and is going to be useful to the people, we will continue and complete the project. “Today we are using the new government house, I didn’t start the project but I completed it and the people of Plateau are using it. ”We have so far completed some abandoned projects and we are going to complete more of them because I hate hearing about abandoned projects,’’ he emphasized. On his legacy projects that were mainly in health and education sectors, Lalong assured that he would complete the 46 projects. The governor said that due to paucity of funds, the scope of the legacy projects was scaled down from N50 to N30 billion to enable the state government complete them. “We went to the capital market, got the money needed to complete the projects and we told the contractor that he must finish the projects in time. “We realize that the contractor is slow and we have issued him a notice of termination and you will see what will happen in the next three months,’’ he assured. Lalong also assured journalists that the contractor handling the remodelling of NUJ Secretariat Jos would return to site before the end of March to complete the project. Mr Dan Manjang, Commissioner for Information and Communication, said that the initiative to conduct journalists round ongoing projects was to enable them see and assess what government was doing in the area of infrastructure development. In a press statement sent to our correspondent, activist Paul stated: “I celebrate with Emmanuel Television partners, family and members all over the World for the epoch 15th year anniversary of the Emmanuel Television. “15 years ago, Emmanuel Television channel was birthed after a longtime of sabotage by the Nigerian government. “Gatekeeping of miraculous activities and adverts from the Synagogue Church of All Nations in the Nigerian national television was unbearably handled 15 years ago. “The sabotage and serial sanctions were obviously given by the Nigerian government against Prophet TB Joshua but God Almighty gave him a Television channel called, “EmmanuelTV”, which is mostly viewed by over six hundred million people all over the World via each Sunday-service including leaders of the World and the Nigerian government. “TB Joshua is a humble but non-discriminatory powerful man of God who has received a national award by the late President of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Y’adua. “Nigerian government and Nigerians are today benefiting directly from the miraculous activities of the Emmanuel Television channel through the “distance is not a barrier” interactive-prayers, teachings, healing and deliverance to the glory of God. “May God continue to bless and elongate the life-span of TB Joshua. Strike: Tension as FG insists some ASUU demand can’t be met now

The Federal Government has faulted the fresh notice by the Academic Staff Union of Universities to embark on a fresh strike barely four months after calling off a 10-month industrial action. The government said any person conceiving a strike after close to one year of downing tools would be doing a disservice to students “because government is a continuum.” The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who stated this in an interview with Sunday PUNCH , said it had been difficult for the government to run the lives of over 200 million people with less than $70m a day in earnings. He said, “Whoever is conceiving a strike after being on a strike for close to one year is damaging the studentship because government is a continuum. Even if we are not in power today, another government, as the case may be, will be there. “Whoever is in power will continue to engage with any union. But that shouldn’t stop the country from functioning because the rest of the country are the ones you put at risk. “I have never supported strikes. However, I believe people should press for their demands as responsibly as possible. It is the responsibility of the government to continue to engage them.” When asked if ASUU should still be patient with the government, Nwajiuba said it depended on the style of the demands. He said, “It depends on the style of the demands; some of them are what the government can do now, some can be what the government can do later. “I’m sure you’re aware of the revenue base of the country – 1.5 million barrels are sold. It is difficult to run the lives of over 200 million people with less than $70m a day in earnings. It is amazing that the President has managed to keep the country afloat.” Culled from The Punch

Nnamdi Kanu’s Security Outfit Dares FG, Continues Training, Operations In S/East

Perhaps, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) which was set up by the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a measure to secure the South East from kidnappers, armed herdsmen, robbers and other criminal elements, has come to stay with the people since its operatives have reportedly continued their training and operation, though secretly, despite the crackdown by the federal government’s security forces, Daily Trust on Sunday reports. Despite attempts by the government to clamp down on their activities, members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) are said to have intensified their training in their base along the Orlu axis. The training was intensified after the recent skirmishes between soldiers and the ESN operatives. Daily Trust correspondent gathered that most of these training sessions take place in the night, away from the searchlight of security agents. Though their operations are clandestine, they appear to be operating between the boundaries of Orlu and Lilu in Anambra State. They are also said to be operating along areas of Orlu main town, Umutanze, in Orlu, Orsu Ihitte Ukwa, and Okporo Orlu. Those operating at Ubomiri in Mbaitoli are said to be controlling the Owerri – Orlu road, making it impossible for security agents to operate along that axis. Indeed the police appeared to have been helpless in this regard as they have abandoned most of the major roads in the Orlu axis for fear of attack by operatives of ESN. It was also gathered that residents of the area act as informants to the operatives against any advancing security agents. One thing about the operatives is that it is not possible to point out a particular location where they operate from. A resident of Orlu, who simply gave his name as Chima, told our correspondent that anybody that talks about ESN is looked at suspiciously, reprimanding our correspondent to be careful about his enquiries. He said, “When you ask anybody about ESN, you are looked at suspiciously because the people of the area have come to embrace ESN as their own police. So when you ask this kind of question, it is presumed that you are either a security agent or their informant. So I am advising you to be careful because ESN informants are everywhere or you may even know if the person you are talking to is a member of ESN.” The Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, could not answer questions on this issue as he said it’s a security matter. But our correspondent gathered that because of constant attacks on personnel along the Orlu–Owerri road, policemen dread patrolling the road. A police source said that men of ESN target policemen for attack mainly to collect their guns. However, it was gathered that apart from the ‘Operation Search and Flush,’ which the state government had set up, the government is tinkering with the idea of forming what it called ‘Homeland Security Network. Indeed our correspondent sighted some vehicles at the Government House, Owerri, already branded for the job. In Anambra State, the presence of the contentious ESN is not quite pronounced or noticeable, though its ‘quiet existence’ has seemingly continued to raise dust and generate concern among the populace. However, for now, nobody or no security report has indicted the outfit concerning its training or operations anywhere in Anambra State. Findings by our correspondent show that the state is literally free from activities of the ESN and no notice of its operatives in the state. But some of the people in the state appear to have welcomed the idea of the security outfit to secure the zone from intruders and criminal elements of all kinds – whether from within or outside the zone. A trader in Awka, Mike Okereke, said that ESN is a welcome development that Eastern governors must encourage and support. Commenting on the development, the spokesman for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the command has not recorded any incident about the ESN. He said that the state does not know nor has it reported about the training of the outfit and at the same time does not have issues about their operation and activities in the state. However, the story seems different in Ebonyi State which calls itself “Salt of The Nation” as the operation ESN has continued to gather momentum within the state and its environs. Although the ESN which Nnamdi Kanu said was set up chiefly to improve the delicate security situation in the zone where armed herdsmen and farmers’ clashes have done a lot of harm to the people, there seems to be more to it than meets the eye. No one can certainly say. Indeed, the operations of ESN in Ebonyi State are mostly common in rural areas, but the security network has, so far, remained peaceful in terms of its operations in the state. Daily Trust on Sunday gathered that the group in their hundreds recently visited some communities in the state with the purpose to expel criminal herders in those areas. But findings by the Daily Trust on Sunday revealed that the ESN, otherwise regarded as a vigilante organization, has continually made its operations secret including its recruitment, training and camps or stations. Efforts made to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Loveth Odah, to comment on the said activities of ESN in the state were fruitless as she did not answer calls put to her telephone line. In Enugu State, not much is heard about the existence or otherwise of the controversial ESN. But in an attempt to get more information on the security outfit in the state, our reporter was asked to visit Emene. At Emene, a native told him to go to ‘Malasia Forest’ in Uzo-Uwani, Ezeagu Forest, Nkerefi Forest in Nkanu where there is a boundary between Enugu and Ebonyi states. The native, who warned our correspondent to be “extra-careful” on how he goes about making enquiries about this group, so that he wouldn’t be seen as ‘suspected

Cult War: Man beheaded, another shot dead in Anambra community

Ibe Pascal Arogorn Cultists on Friday killed two persons at Oghalegbu village, Okija in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State, thus heightening tension in the area. One of the victims had his head cut off and taken away by the assailants in the presence of his wailing octogenarian mother and other siblings. It was gathered that Okija community had lost four men through the activities of rival cult groups in the area since November 2020. A source in the community told Crimefacts.news that there was sporadic shooting at the popular Nkwo Okija market by rival groups, adding that one of the groups later headed to Oghalegbu village where the two men were killed. The source said: “One of the youths who was killed earlier was to be laid to rest today (Saturday) and on arrival at the Nkwo Okija market, his friends organized a ceremony at the market as the body was brought from the mortuary. “While at Nkwo market, the youths identified the store of the mother of someone they suspected to be one of the murders of the man and they vented their anger on the shop belonging to his mother. They ransacked and looted the store and threw the entire market into panic, with the traders scampering for safety.” Although normalcy had returned, youths from another village, Umuogu, were said to be spoiling for a showdown in the community because they also lost another youth. Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incident, said it was a war between two rival cult groups. He said: “It is an incident that involved two rival cult groups in Okija. Arrest has been made and police operatives are on track to apprehend the rest of the people who are still at large. “The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Kuryas has, however, called for calm and urged parents to pay closer attention to their wards”.
