INEC suspends Ekiti East bye-Election as 3 die over bloody violence

….Fayemi, Fayose condemn killings Ibe Pascal Arogorn Following the crisis that characterized Saturday’s Ekiti East Constituency 1 bye-election, the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC has suspended the election indefinitely. The Resident Electoral commissioner, Dr Adeniran Tella announced this while addressing newsmen in OMUO EKITI. Dr Tella explained that the suspension was based on violence that characterised the exercise in some polling unit in OMUO EKITI. He alleged that three persons persons were shot dead while a police woman, corps member and INEC staff sustained gunshot injuries which necessitated the suspension of the exercise. Tella said the poll was disrupted in some polling units in Obadore, saying that the safety of electoral officials, materials and Security personnel could no longer be guaranteed. According to him, “The exercise commenced on a good note in a peaceful and orderly manner. However, at about 10.00 am there were reported cases of violence: “In two (2) PUs of ward 09 (Obadore IV); polling unit 8 (Baba Egbe houselodouro/Odoule) & polling unit 9 (Beside Baba Egbe/Odouru/Odoule) i. Polling unit 07 (Aro street/Aro) of ward 07 (Obadore lI). “In PU 07, ward 07 three (3) voters were shot dead while a youth corper, a police woman and an INEC staff sustained gunshot wounds. “Under this circumstance, the safety of electoral officials, security personnel and election materials as well as the credibility of the process cannot be guaranteed. “The State Commissioner of Police is fully aware of the situation. “It is unfortunate that in spite of the effort of the Commission in giving Nigerians free, fair, credible and inclusive election, some people appear to be unprepared for an improved electoral process. “The situation is such that, a conducive environment no longer exists for further electoral activity at the PUs and the Collation centers. “In view of this development, the Commission has suspended the election forthwith” Policewoman, two others killed Three persons have been killed by thugs in the bye-election for Ekiti East constituency (I) seat in the state house of assembly. A policewoman was among those killed when violence broke out during the election on Saturday. The deceased policewoman is said to be a nursing mother. The Ekiti East constituency (I) seat became vacant following the death of Juwa Adegbuyi, the former representative. Adegbuyi passed away in February. Several vehicles were also vandalised during the violence at different polling units. Biodun Olujimi, senator representing Ekiti South, narrowly escaped getting attacked by the thugs. TheCable understands that the thugs went on a rampage in her polling units in Omuo Ekiti. A witness said the thugs are in the employ of some politicians who have an interest in the bye-election. The police command in the state had on Friday announced a restriction of movement ahead of the election. Sunday Abutu, Ekiti police spokesperson, had said the restriction was to ensure a hitch-free exercise. Abutu had said the restriction was for vehicular and pedestrian movement in and out of the Ekiti East LGA, except those on essential duties. Fayemi, Fayose condemn killings Both the Ekiti State goveror, Dr Kayode Fayemi and his predecessor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, on Saturday, condemned the violence that marred the Saturday’s Ekiti East Constituency’s by-election into the state House of Assembly where three persons were said to have lost their lives. Fayem condemned, in strong terms, the violence, saying that “no one involved in the dastardly act would go unpunished.” In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, Fayemi asked the Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo, to arrest all those involved in the violence “regardless of their party affiliation.” Fayemi said: “This violence is most unwarranted and deeply disturbing. I have instructed the police authorities to fish out the perpetrators and ensure they face the music. “Our condolences to the families that lost loved ones and those who were injured. Government would not relent in efforts to always ensure safety of lives and properties. We shall ensure all purveyors of violence are brought to book.” While commiserating with the families of those that died, the governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to upholding the sacredness of life and sanctity of the electoral process. Also, The former governor of the state, Mr Ayodele Fayose, condemned the killings, describing it as “clear evidence of state-sponsored terrorism against its own citizens who have rejected the party in government.” Fayose, in a statement he personally signed, said the killings of the three citizens in Omuo-Ekiti were shameful and a clear indication that the people have rejected the ruling party. He said: “I thought we have gone past this barbarism in Ekiti State especially when we are confronted with national insecurity to which the government has no solution. “What was witnessed today in Omuo Ekiti is nothing but terrorism against the people of Ekiti, knowing that time has caught up with them and they are no longer popular. “This will remain a guilt in the conscience of the perpetrators and their sponsors perpetually for killing their own people just because of a mere House of Assembly by-election. “Most importantly, everything that goes round in life comes round. The perpetrators of this despicable act should therefore remember that there will be consequences for all actions because the blood of the dead will surely speak and fight back. “To the police in Ekiti, they know what to do and the people behind all these, if only they choose not to look away. Ekiti shall be free again if we collectively confront and win this battle against fake apostles of democracy.”

Military Spying On Igboho Is Stooping Low, Says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters says it is demeaning to allege that the Nigerian military can stoop so low to the extent of “spying” on the acclaimed Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho. It comes after Igboho and his cohorts had in a viral video released on Friday alleged that “soldiers” sent by the Federal Government were seen doing a ‘survey’ of Sunday Igboho’s Soka residence in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. But responding to the allegations in a statement on Saturday, acting director of Defence Media Operations, Brig.-Gen. Benard Onyeuko, said, “While the Defence Headquarters has no interest dragging or joining issues with Sunday Adeyemo or his associates, it is pertinent to clear the air and address these allegations squarely. “For the records, it should be noted that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, are highly professional in the discharge of their duties, with well-defined roles, responsibilities and duties in its mandate of securing the territorial integrity of the Nigerian Nation. “As such, the Military cannot stoop so low to such extent to “spy” on one individual, as wildly and loosely alleged. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria is a highly disciplined and professional organization with extant laws and regulations which guide the actions of its personnel in the conduct of their duties. “As such, it is practically impossible for military personnel on official duty to conduct themselves in such manner as alleged by Adeyemo and his cohorts,” the statement read. Onyeuko maintained that preliminary investigations so far revealed that one of the alleged “soldiers” is a serial impersonator, warning that individuals and groups should desist from disparaging the enviable reputation of the Nigerian Military. He added, “For the avoidance of doubt, preliminary investigation has so far revealed that one of the alleged “soldiers” is a serial impersonator. “Meanwhile credible eyewitnesses and sources have also revealed that some associates of Igboho went in pursuit of some individuals when the motorbike conveying the impersonator and one Nigerian Air Force personnel ran into them. “The duo were immediately apprehended and taken to the said “IGBOHO House” at Soka before Ibadan toll gate where they were branded as spies. Furthermore, investigations are currently underway by Nigerian Airforce and the Nigerian Army to unravel the actual circumstances which played out on the day. “The Defence Headquarters hereby warns individuals and groups to desist from disparaging the enviable reputation of the Nigerian Military by dragging it into its petty issues to gain political mileage. Such actions will not be condoned in the future.”

Wike To FG: If You Kill Ortom, Be Prepared To Bury Nigeria

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State says the Federal Government will be held responsible if Samuel Ortom, his Benue counterpart, is assassinated. The convoy of Ortom was attacked along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue on Saturday. In his reaction to the incident, Wike said if the Benue governor is killed, there might be another civil war in the country. “If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria,” Wike said in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers. The Rivers governor alleged that during the 2019 general elections, the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and All Progressives Congress chieftains concluded plan to assassinate him. Wike described as disturbing the growing trend where the live of governors are brazenly threatened.

774,000 jobs: Buhari approves payment of stipends to participants

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Festus Keyamo (SAN), on Saturday, announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the payment of stipends to the 774,000 participants of the ongoing Special Public Works Programme across the country. Keyamo announced this in a message he posted on his Twitter handle, @fkeyamo. Recall that the programme designed to engage 774,000 unemployed Nigerians started nationwide on January 5, 2020 after several postponements. While N52bn was appropriated for the scheme, each of the 774,000 workers is expected to earn N20,000 monthly for the three-month duration of the job, amounting to about N46.44bn. Keyamo said he had directed the National Directorate of Employment to begin processing the payments. He assured the participants that they will soon receive alerts. The minister wrote, “President Muhammadu Buhari has graciously directed a release of the funds for the payment of stipends to the 774,000 participants of the SPW programme. “I have consequently directed the NDE to begin processing the payments and participants should begin to receive payments soon. “In order to eliminate fraud and/or double payments, I have also directed that every payment to participants should be made using the BVN of their accounts so we can have an audit trail of every single payment. “Those who registered with different names should not expect payments.” The programme commenced on January 5 contrary to a resolution by the House of Representatives that asked the Federal Government to suspend it. The House had particularly asked Keyamo to suspend the exercise indefinitely until all issues the National Assembly had against it were resolved. The programme, designed to employ 1,000 Nigerians from each of the 774 local government areas in the country was initially scheduled for launch on October 1, last year but it ran into hitches following the power play between Keyamo and the then Director-General, NDE, Nasir Ladan, who was later sacked.

Ortom: How herdsmen opened fire on my convoy

Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, has narrated how gunmen suspected to be herdsmen attacked his convoy on Saturday. The incident was said to have occurred at Tyo Mu along Makurdi-Gboko road while on a visit to a farm. The governor, who confirmed the incident to journalists, described the gunmen as “herders”. He said the armed men, numbering about 15, trailed his convoy to the river bank where he was on foot with his security details to inspect a farm and opened fire on them. Ortom praised his security details “who were just about six” for responding quickly to the attackers and repelling the armed men promptly before providing cover for him to return to safety. The governor added that troops of operation whirl stroke, the police, and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have mobilised to the forest between Tyo Mu and Abinse where the armed herdsmen are thought to be camped. He also called for the arrest and prosecution of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore. In reaction to a comment made by Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, that herdsmen have no option but to carry AK-47 to protect themselves, Ortom had warned all herders in the state to respect the laws prohibiting the carrying of unlicensed arms. “Anyone who is not willing to respect the laws of our land should go and meet Bala Mohammed, and there you can carry AK-47, and you’ll not be apprehended. Here, when you come, we’ll apprehend you. I want this to be known,” he had said. Following backlash, Mohammed cautioned herders against carrying AK-47 rifle, saying his earlier statement was a figurative allusion.

I made Amaechi governor, says Wike

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says he made Rotimi Amaechi, his predecessor, governor of the state. Wike had served as chief of staff, when Amaechi was governor of the state. Both men fell apart ahead of the 2015 election, with Ameachi defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since then, Wike and Amaechi, the minister of transportation, have been at loggerheads. Following the corruption allegation Wike made against his predecessor, Amaechi had recently said he won’t descend to exchanging words with the governor whom he described as his employee. But in an interview with the BBC Pidgin service on Friday, Wike said it was not possible to be an employee of Amaechi whom he made governor. “Amaechi and I were in the same party, and in politics, everybody has his own ambition. He had his ambition to be governor, and at the time, I didn’t. So, we fought and supported him to be governor,” he said. “Now he’s in APC, and you don’t expect me as a PDP person to support what he does. “I was the one God used to make Amaechi governor. I will even give you a tape from what he said in the church; that after God, I’m next. But when he was talking the other day, saying I was his staff, his employee, I said no problem. “We all sat to make you governor, and I was the one who championed it. How do you call someone who made you governor an employee? When he became governor, he asked me; how are we going to run this government, and he offered me to be commissioner of finance, but I said no, let me be in the chief of staff office. “That time I made him governor, I had power to choose. People know in this state. “With his APC, did they even score 25 percent here during the 2015 and 2019 elections? His staff stopped him from winning Rivers for his presidential candidate? Stopped him from winning the governorship election for his candidate? Not even a senatorial seat? “Well, we have passed that. He said over his dead body will I be governor, now I am looking for that dead body. I have been governor for eight years now. In 2015 when I won, they said PDP was in power, but I also won again in 2019 when APC was in power.” Wike again accused his predecessor of mismanaging the state funds when he was governor. He alleged that Ameachi sold the state’s gas turbine for $308,000 and left his government with $208,000. “See the monorail, just 1.5 kilometre, they said they spent N54 billion. I am not saying anybody is corrupt, but just see all these monies we have mentioned,” he said.

We can no longer stop our youths from self determination – Yoruba leaders warn

Yoruba youth leader, Mr Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, who came to prominence after he issued an eviction notice to criminal herders in Ibarapa area of Oyo State last month has declared that it was time for the Yoruba to have their own nation to be called Oodua Republic, saying this is the year of freedom for Yoruba nation. Speaking at an event which video has gone viral, Sunday Igboho lamented that the Yoruba ethnic group had been marginalized under the present government and he would soon lead other Yoruba youths to declare freedom from the Nigerian state. He dared any Yoruba leader to campaign publicly for any elective post under the present arrangement. He reiterated his stand while speaking in Ibadan on Wednesday, declaring that Yoruba were no longer part of Nigeria. He said the Yoruba were now united and with traditional rulers backing them. He had said in the video that, “we are no longer interested in being part of Nigeria. Before this becomes war, the United Nations must intervene because we want to go. We have gone beyond the point that we cannot keep quiet again. We are no longer scared to voice out. We are not safe anywhere; we can’t sleep in peace; we can’t travel in peace. What have we done; are we slaves?” But how feasible is this Oodua Republic project for which Sunday Igboho vowed that there would be no retreat, no surrender until the republic becomes a reality? Reacting to Sunday Igboho’s declaration, some Yoruba leaders backed him while others expressed caution. The Secretary General of Yoruba Council of Elders, Dr Kunle Olajide said, “As far as we are concerned, the injustice in the country staring us in the face every minute is very annoying and discouraging. Much as we believe that the current administration would have a change of mind and enthrone equity and fairness, day after day we begin to witness gross injustice and ethnocentrism, that is very frustrating and this is why we are not quarreling with any of our children because their future is at stake. If they believe that it does not appear as if this country is fair to them anymore and they are attempting to dissolve the union, we do not quarrel with them, we do not stop them. We had believed in Nigeria and we had thought that the present administration would see reason with us. I was particularly impressed with the speech of the Vice President at the University of Sokoto, where he talked about equity, justice and fairness to all. But not quite 24 or 18 hours after, Justices of the Court of Appeal were appointed and only a handful of them came from the South. So, it is difficult for us now to discourage our children who believe that it appeared we don’t have a future in this country. We are not quarreling with them, we would allow them to exercise their fundamental human rights within the Nigerian law. The first law of nature is self preservation, so Yoruba people as human beings must dedicate themselves to protecting their lives and property. For too long we have abdicated the responsibility to the government but I think with the events of the last one year or two, we must now rise up to protect ourselves, protect our forest, protect our people. I am in absolute support and we should do everything to encourage Igboho. Our lands have been invaded, over 80 percent of Okada riders in Yorubaland are from the north and you’re not too sure whether they are not armed. We are worried about the ethnocentric leaning of this administration in spite of various outcries of injustice. One can understand Igboho’s frustration just like many other youths because it appears this administration is not reckoning with any other section of this country other than the north. So many of our youths believe their future is not secured in this country”. Chief Sola Ebiseni, a member of the 2014 National Conference and former commissioner , in his own reaction said, “when those who delude themselves that they have Nigeria and Nigerians in their pocket are impervious to reasons on the need for its structural reviews to meet the logical federal imperatives of its ethnic diversity, the vacuum thus wittingly or unwittingly created, is filled by the inevitable natural processes of change, beyond any philosophical or organised coordination. Unfortunately, the wind sowed by the deviance to change, arrived at through debates and multilateral intellectual guidance, is now yielding whirlwind all over the places, more vociferous at the backyard of apostles of unitarian centralisation. It is hoped that reasons will still prevail to pull us back from the very tip of the precipice of state failure. VANGUARD
