Biafra, Oduduwa Republic – ’liberation struggle’ as the new hustle

By Frederick Nwabufo In the tome of liberation struggles, a few names resonate infinitely. One name that rings trenchant to this day is Ernesto ‘’Che’’ Guevara. ‘’Che’’ envisioned a world as recreated in the dialectics of Karl Marx – where those in the lowest rung of the social strata can command their destiny. Che fantasised about an ‘’international revolution’’ which would sweep across the world beginning from Latin America. The Argentine revolutionary found an ally in Fidel Castro, the late leader of Cuba. But Castro found in him a useful marionette. Che was disinterested in acquiring political power. It was all about spreading the Marxist ideology for him. However, Castro, his ‘’comrade’’, had other plans. Castro desired political power, and he courted it, gaming his guerrilla leader. Che, dauntless and irrepressible, became a pliable device in the actualisation of Castro’s ambition. But he was later killed in Bolivia in circumstances that taint Castro of culpability. There is always a personal interest – most times not so kosher — in every struggle. There will always be users, and there will always be the used. To be on any of the divides is a personal choice. However, the Cuban struggle must not be blemished or compared in any way to the barbarous gyrations for Biafra and Oduduwa Republic by some groups. I do not see the agitations for Biafra and Oduduwa Republic as a ‘’liberation struggle’’ – because there is absolutely nothing to be liberated from other than bad governance in Nigeria. If the agitations are anchored to demanding good leadership for the country and the right of every Nigerian to be treated equally regardless of religion or ethnicity, then I will rhapsodise them as ‘’liberation struggle’’. The liberation Nigeria needs is from distressing leadership and its corollaries of corruption, poverty and insecurity. Nigeria does not need to be bifurcated into Biafra Republic and Oduduwa Republic to make progress. The ingredients for all-around development are already in profusion here. But we need leadership to put them to work. COMMERCIALISATION OF AGITATIONS Sectional agitations have become merchandise. This bellicose commerce is largely sustained by conspiracy theories and ethnic hate-trading. Conspiracy theories are fed to followers some of whom will give up their lives for a ‘’delusive happy-ever-after country’’. They are lied to that their adversaries are those who do not speak their language and worship like them. They are seduced with fallacies of ethnic superiority like Adolf Hitler corrupted Germans with the supremacist venom. These followers give themselves and resources to this ill-fated cause – ‘’a kingdom of heaven on earth’’ where there will be no more night. And as they are fed more conspiracy theories, supremacist doctrines and fables of a utopian country on the horizons, they give and give to the ‘’cause’’. And of course, the ‘’promoter’’ of the ‘’struggle’’ luxuriates in the good things mammon can afford. Also, politicians find in these ‘’agitations’’ a market where they can acquire oppositional ammunition to deploy against adversaries. So, they fund them through proxies. I watched a video which dramatised the commercialisation of agitations. In the video posted by Kayode Ogundamisi on Twitter, there was a squabble over money between a lady and Yomi Koiki, Sunday Igboho’s spokesman. The lady said N2.5 million was given to Igboho but he did not acknowledge receiving the money even after he admitted collecting another N6.5 million from a Yoruba group in the US. ‘’Yoruba liberation should not be a money making venture,’’ Maureen Badejo, the lady in the video said. ‘’Liberation struggle’’ is the new hustle. On Sunday, Asari Dokubo declared a Biafra government in the Old Eastern Nigerian enclave. But what I found amusing was his call, which he knotted in a Biafra flag-waving bromide, for volunteers to join the struggle. Asari: “My brothers and sisters, the four of us will kick start the process, others will come on board. We want volunteers who are committed; we want volunteers because there is nothing anymore. We are the people who have volunteered to salvage ourselves and the rest of us.’’ The ‘’volunteers or followers’’ are the real merchandise. The more of them you can muster, they more influence and money you command. It is worrying that the commoditisation of people’s disaffection with the government is now a thriving business. The captains of these agitations know that there is yawning discontent with the leadership, particularly in some sections of the country. So, they exploit these emotions and play on them. Really, if Nigeria had responsive leaderships, the chances of people like Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu emerging as ethnic champions or crusaders with mass followership would be slim. The system created these anomalies. Nigerians must approach these agitations with sobriety and not lend themselves to anyone’s personal agenda. We must keep making demands on and holding the government to account. That is our bounden duty as citizens. Anyone advocating secession knows it is impossible in today’s Nigeria, but the real agenda is secreted underneath the advocacy. Beware!

Drama As Gunman Opens Fire On Teenage Girl In Ekiti

A final year Senior Secondary School student has been shot four times by a yet-to-be-identified man in Ekiti State. The police are yet to arrest the gunman nor unravel the motive of the shooting. The victim, Ayomide Adaranijo, is receiving treatment at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado Ekiti and could not complete registering for the ongoing 2021 West African Examinations Council (WAEC). The 15-year-old girl was shot while waiting by the roadside for a commercial motorcycle to take her home having gone to assist her mother at her shop around NOVA junction at Basiri area of Ado Ekiti metropolis. Her mother, Mrs Omolayo Adaranijo, was among the pedestrians at the junction when the shooting occurred. “I have a small shop at NOVA junction at Basiri where I sell some wares. I had closed that day and we were looking for a motorbike to take us to Ifesowapo, Better life, Basiri area where we live, when this man just alighted from Okada and shot my daughter,” she said. Mrs Adaranijo, while recounting the incident, said she was with her daughter at the junction when she saw a man wearing agbada alighted from a motorcycle parked nearby and shot at the crowd. She said everybody scampered for safety while the shooting lasted, adding that it was when the man left on the waiting motorcycle and that she discovered that her daughter was the target as she was covered in blood. She said she sustained gunshot injuries on her breast, stomach and arm. The 45-year-old single mother of four said some residents that witnessed the shooting assisted in taking the girl to EKSUTH. “The doctors and nurses on duty at the emergency section did a good job because I had presumed her dead. They quickly worked on her and removed the pellets from her stomach, breast, and arms. The younger children had gone home that day maybe it could have been worse. I still couldn’t fathom why she should be the one to be shot among eight people at the scene. “I came to Ado Ekiti from Ibadan less than two years ago after breaking up with her father. I don’t have a crisis with anybody, so this still remains a mystery to me. My daughter is a very gentle and studious person, she doesn’t engage in discussion with people let alone hurting them. I want this matter investigated thoroughly so that the perpetrator can be brought to justice,” she said. She said the family had to rely on support from people and also take loans from friends to pay N150, 000 for the bills incurred for her surgery while they are still are indebted to the hospital. She added that the surgery, treatment, and the medication would cost more than N500,000 to keep Ayomide on her feet which she couldn’t afford due to poor economic situation as she unilaterally caters for four children as a single parent. “The family is hugely indebted to EKSUTH and we are still buying drugs. A medical expert said we will spend over N500, 000 before she can be fit to return to school. Where would I get such money in my present situation? “I want the government and well-meaning Nigerians to help me”, she pleaded. Mrs Adaranijo said she had reported the case at the Divisional Police Station located at the new Iyin Road, Ado Ekiti. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, ASP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, saying investigations would unveil the mystery behind the shooting. “Investigations have begun into the incident. We are looking at all possibilities and every angle to the case. The investigations will be thorough and expanded because we need to get to the root of why the gunman targeted such a young girl. “We are assuring the public that the perpetrator won’t escape justice,” Abutu stated.

Yoruba monarch warns against calls for Nigeria’s breakup

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, has appealed to those calling for the secession of Nigeria to shelve the idea. The monarch warned that those beating the drum of war in Nigeria are not only calling for chaos in the country but in Africa at large. Oba Gbadebo spoke when he played host to the National President of the National Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Musa Maitakobi, the Chairman of RTEAN in Ogun state, Titilayo Akibu, and other members of the association in his palace in Ake, Abeokuta. The visit was part of activities marking the one year anniversary of Akibu as the state chairman of RTEAN in Ogun state. Alake’s statement was against the declaration of Yoruba nation and South-West secession from Nigeria by a Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho. The monarch said Nigeria cannot afford to go through another civil war, stressing that no country in the world will be willing to have over 250 million Nigerians as refugees. The monarch said Nigerians, irrespective of their tribe, political or religious afflictions, must work together for the greater good of the country. Alake said if Nigeria fails as a country, the entire black race has failed, insisting that Nigeria is better as one united nation than breaking up. He said, “Nigerians, wherever we go in Nigeria we must see ourselves as nationals of the same country, people of the same blood. “We must work together to make Nigeria great because we must not fail, Nigeria must not fail, if Nigeria fails, the black race has failed and may it never happened. “Where will over 250 million people go to? If they enter the next country, we will eat all their foods within two days, there will be no food for anybody in that place again that is why we must remain where we are and make Nigeria work and work well.” Alake, however, commended the national president of RTEAN for revolutionalising the nation’s road transport sector. Maitakobi had earlier commissioned a multimillion naira mosque, built on the premises of RTEAN secretariat in Abeokuta by the Akibu- led administration. Earlier in his address, Maitakobi said the association has concluded plans to inject new buses into the nation’s road transport sector, to aid easy movement of passengers from one point to another. Maitakobi awarded Oba Adedotun as the grand patron of the association in recognition of the monarch’s support for RTEA.

Tension As Arewa Youths Give Igboho 72-Hrs To Evacuate Yorubas From North

Northern youths have told rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Ighoho), to move all Yorubas from the northern states in the next 72 hours. The youths, under the auspices of Arewa Youth Assembly, threatened they would be forced to evacuate all Yorubas resident in the north, after expiration of the ultimatum. They also solicited support of northern elders, traditional rulers and security agencies in their resolve to evacuate Yorubas from the19 northern states and Abuja. They said the decision was informed by declaration of Yoruba nation by Ighoho on Wednesday. Arewa Youth Assembly in a statement issued by its Speaker, Mohammed Danlami, argued Igboho that had continuously threatened lives and properties of northerners residing in the South west for no reason. They said since it is Igboho who wants Yoruba out of the north to form a Yoruba nation, northern youths will make it easy for him by asking him to provide a means of transportation to convey his people to the south west. They said that: “We are hereby giving him the ultimatum of 72 hours to move his people out or we will be forced to take necessary actions by personally taking the responsibility of getting his people back home. “It is in the lights of this recent event that we wish to call on the Northern elders, traditional rulers and all security agencies to support us in accomplishing this task of evacuating the Yorubas out of the 19 Northern States and the FCT Abuja, making it a very peaceful exercise devoid of loss of lives and destruction of properties or hijack by hoodlums to prevent the re-occurrence of the END-SARS protest.”

FG set to go ahead with $1.5bn refinery revamp despite criticisms

The Federal Government is to forge ahead with its plan of spending $1.5bn on the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery despite criticisms that had trailed the move. Officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation stated on Friday that it had been the intention of government to revamp the unprofitable facility. The Federal Executive Council had on Wednesday approved the plan by the FMPR to rehabilitate the Port Harcourt Refinery with $1.5bn. The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, who announced this, stated that the rehabilitation would happen in three phases. But the plan to spend $1.5bn on the facility came under intense criticisms by many Nigerians. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar faulted the $1.5bn approval and argued that budgeting the amount for the renovation of a refinery at a critical period of increased unemployment and inflation “would appear to be an unwise use of scarce funds.” However, when contacted to know if the ministry would review its stance on the revamp of the refinery, following the widespread criticism that greeted the development, the FMPR said there had been no counter-directive to that effect. The Deputy Director of Information, FMPR, Enefaa Bob-Manuel, said the petroleum minister had never rescinded his decision to forge ahead with the move. “Has the minister said otherwise? He has not said otherwise on the information about which you called me to get my reaction,” Bob-Manuel stated. Also, an official at NNPC, who preferred not to be named, said the plan to fix the refinery had been on for long and it would be improper to back down at this time when funds for its revamp had been approved despite opposition to it.

ASUP threatens nationwide polytechnic strike from April 6

Academic activities in the nation’s Polytechnics may be disrupted from April 6, if the government fails to meet some demands by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechincs, ASUP, the union said on Friday. Rising from their National Executive Council meeting in Katsina, the union, in a communique, accused the government of failure to fulfil its side of the agreement made with the workers some years back. The National President, Mr. Anderson Ezeibe, said the Federal Government was also yet to pay 10 months arrears of the new minimum wage owed his members in Federal Polytechnics. He also said some state governments were yet to implement the new wage for his members. He gave other reasons for the proposed strike to include Implementation of the contents of the NEEDS Assessment Report of 2014 in public Polytechnics and like institutions. “Reconstitute governing councils in all Federal Polytechnics and in State-owned Polytechnics where such is yet to be constituted. “Release owed Staff salaries in Abia, Ogun, Osun, Benue, Plateau, Edo and Cross River States and implement full salary payments in Sokoto, Kaduna, Adamawa and other institutions with such reports. Release of promotion arrears in Federal Polytechnics and payment of same as well as annual increments in Adamawa, Plateau and other states with similar cases.” “Withdrawal of the letter containing spurious, incoherent and unsubstantiated claims of PAYE tax liabilities in 19 Federal Polytechnics. “Ensure full implementation of the provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act as well as its domestication in Adamawa, Kano, Sokoto, Abia, Niger and other states affected. “Stop attempts at forcing the ASUP members in Colleges of Agriculture out of the Union. And lastly implement the 65 years retirement age for academic Staff in State owned institutions like in Kano, Kaduna and other states institutions in the country.” He said his members were ready for a total shut down of the Polytechincs if their demands were not met. He added that the patience or his members had been tasked beyond limit.

Fani-Kayode never assaulted, sexually harassed any of us — Favour Anthony

Reactions have continued to trail a media report credited to an ex-nanny, Anthonia Uchenna, a domestic staff to Chief Femi Fani-Kayode over allegations of assaults, and sexual harassment of his domestic staff. The head Nurse in the home of the ex-minister, Favour Anthony has debunked the allegations of harassment and sexual assaults on domestic staff levelled against Chief Femi Fani-Kayode by a sacked domestic staff, Uchenna Antonia. Uchenna had made what was described by Favour as unfounded accusations, that the former minister stripped his former chef naked over theft and arrest some others suspected of stealing in his house. But in a swift reaction, The head nurse debunked the claims saying they were all lies from the pit of hell by those who have been paid by the estranged wife of the ex-minister to tarnish his reputation. Favour, who also is a pastor, said there was never a time the ex-minister assaulted anyone. She said the lady in the viral video was sacked in 2019 for allegedly stealing. Favour Anthony made this known in a statement obtained by vanguard on Thursday. She said the video in which the lady made the comment is full of falsehood and fabrications, saying the person behind it is his estranged wife. She said “My name is Pastor Favour Anthony, I am the Head nurse of chief Fani-Kayode, I have been working with him and the children for four years, it has been brought to my attention that one Anthonia who was sacked in 2019 for stealing, has gone to the press and made a video in which she has told many lies against chief Fani-Kayode. “She has also made a video which is full of falsehood and fabrications, she also swore to a fake affidavit making these allegations, this matter is now under criminal investigation and Antonia was procured and paid to tell these lies together with 5 other former staff members just to tarnish chief Fani-Kayode name.” “The person behind it is my former madam who has approached many other staff members including those that are still working here to come and lie against chief Fani-Kayode, she even offered them money to do so.” “In all my four years of working in chief Fani-Kayode House, none of the staff was sexually molested including Antonia and no staff was ever stripped naked, this is a ridiculous claim and it never happened.” I am the Head nurse and the first person anyone would have reported such things to is me, it never happened. “The allegations of sexual harassment by her is also false because everybody knows how disciplined chief Fani-Kayode is around those that take care of his children.” “Antonia is a liar and desperate for money and the ex-wife is using her, she claimed she was been owed salary this is not true, because she has signed for every salary that was her due and we have evidence of it, am the one in charge of it so I know, the staff are paid very well and they are paid on time, and chief Fani-Kayode never owes salary.” It is rather my former madam (ex-wife) who steals the salary of staffs, deducts from their money and subjects them to physical and mental abuse and torture. “I am surprised, that anybody or newspaper will publish this kind of thing, there are over 55 people working in chief Fani-Kayode House and they all are ready, to tell the truth, and how ex-wife was not just wicked to the staff but also to the children and how she often beats them all.” “There are also many people who have worked here before who will tell you the truth.” “I was there when my former madam pulled a Knife on the staffs and the children, including aunty Joy, it was a terrible day the woman is mad.” “Had it not been for the intervention of the police she would have killed us that day.” “The worst thing anyone can do to anybody is to accuse someone falsely in return for money. This is what Antonia and the other accusers have done, luckily for him there are many staff and ex-staff that know the truth and that he his not a sexual predator, never beats his wife or staff but those that say otherwise are been paid to do so.” “I Am a married woman and a pastor, my husband is also a pastor and we have our own church, I have not lied and do not need to lie.” “For four years up until today no less than 15 nannies and nurses work under me and not one of them has ever complained about chief Fani-Kayode rather it has always been the violent ways and mad tantrums of precious Chikwendu and all of us have agreed that she is a danger to everybody around her.” “So Antonia said she has sexually harassed something as huge as that yet she never complained to me as her boss and she never went to the police even after she was sacked since 2019, and she’s saying it now definitely there is a motive behind it.

Another High Court Grants Application Restraining INEC From Recognizing Senator Ararume

A State High Court in Owerri the Imo state capital has granted an application of motion exparte filed by Mr. Frank Ibezim restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC from issuing a certificate of return to Senator Ifeanyi Ararume or recognizing him as the winner of the December 5th Imo north senatorial district bye-election. This injunction is pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for an order of interlocutory injunction. According to the judge, Justice Theresa Chukwuemeka-Chikeka, the order was given after hearing the application of one Martin Aguda counsel to Mr. Frank Ibezim, the court took into consideration the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction and the originating summons filed respectively on the 18th day of March 2021. The notice and grounds of appeal and motion on notice for a stay of execution filed and pending at the Supreme Court in appeal number S.C/C.V/182/2021 and appeal number S.C/C.V/183/2021 by the applicant and APC respectively, were also considered. The latest order regarding the senatorial tussle in Imo North comes just one day after the State High Court in Owerri issued an order of interim injunction to the Independent national electoral commission restraining it from recognizing Senator Ifeanyi Ararume as the winner of the December 2020 Imo North Senatorial candidate of the All progressives Congress (APC). The injunction also restrained INEC from issuing Ararume a certificate of return or any other instrument in his favor in respect of the said election pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice in the suit. According to Justice E.O Agaba of the Owerri High Court, this followed an application by motion exparte brought to it by The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), one Mr. Kelechi Soribe a member of the Imo State working committee of APGA, and five others against Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, INEC and the APC. This order on Thursday came few hours after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Ifeanyi Ararume based on the result of December 5, 2020, Imo North Senatorial bye-election, having been declared as the valid candidate of the All Progressives Congress. Justice Taiwo Taiwo who delivered the judgment ordered INEC to issue the certificate of return within 72 hours. According to him, with regard to the Appeal Court judgment in Abuja, the third defendant (Chukwuma Ibezim) remained disqualified. The Judge held in a judgment that Senator Ararume remains the authentic candidate of the APC and should be declared the winner of the election. Earlier, Justice Taiwo dismissed the Preliminary Objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain Senator Ararume’s suit filed by the APC and Chukwuma Ibezim. Justice Taiwo, who described the application as “an attempt to arrest the judgment,” dismissed it for lacking in merit. Ararume had, through his counsel told Justice Taiwo Taiwo to invoke the judgments of a Federal High Court and that of an Appeal Court to disqualify Ibezim and declare him as the rightful candidate for APC. Prior to the bye-election held on December 5, 2020, Ibezim and Araraume had fielded themselves as APC candidates. Tunde Falola, who is the Counsel to Senator Ararume told journalists after the court ruling that the judgments of the High Court and later the Court of Appeal have conclusively disqualified Ibezim and therefore he cannot claim to be an aspirant or candidate in the Imo North Senatorial election. In opposing Senator Ararume’s suit, APC had told the court that it never fielded him for the December 5, 2020, senatorial bye-election for Imo North Senatorial District of Imo State. The party had, insisted that Senator Ararume lacked the locus standi to lay claim to the candidacy and urged the court to dismiss his suit. Senator Ararume then dragged INEC, APC, and Mister Ibezim before the Federal High Court praying for an order to compel INEC to recognise him as an APC senatorial candidate in the election won by the party. He claimed that Ibezim, having been disqualified by a Federal High Court on account of supplying false information to INEC to secure clearance and same disqualification having been upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja had knocked off Ibezim from laying any claim to the outcome of the by-election. But, the APC, through its counsel, Osho Daudu asked the court to discountenance Ararume’s claims insisting that his name was never forwarded to INEC but that of Chukwuma Francis Ibezim. The counsel submitted that a Federal High Court judgment delivered in Owerri, Imo State which erroneously conferred locus on Ararume had been voided by Supreme Court and cannot confer any advantage on the plaintiff. Emma Osayomi, representing Ibezim, in his own submissions, said that his client has approached the Supreme Court to challenge his disqualification on account of variation in his name. The counsel argued that as at the election day, the name of his client was on the INEC list and not that of Ararume and urged the court to dismiss Ararume’s claims and hold that Chukwuemeka Ibezim remains the APC candidate.
