Minister: Buhari has ordered installation of 36m prepaid meters by June

Goddy Jedy-Agba, minister of state for power, says President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that 36 million prepaid meters be installed across the country by June. Speaking on Friday after inspecting the meter testing facility of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) in Enugu, the minister stated that the agency is mandated to ensure that meters imported into the country meet the expected standard. Recent data released, in February, by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) indicates that only 4,425,628 out of 11.8 million registered customers had been metered as of September 2020. ”I came to inspect what is going on and to know the position regarding the meter testing facilities we are going to have here in Enugu,” NAN quoted the minister to have said. ”I came also to see what has been done and the preparation toward commissioning of the office and I am satisfied with the plans so far. ”We import meters and our facilities here will be used to test the meters to ensure that they meet what Nigerians require. It is after the testing and satisfying our standards that the meter will be installed. ”This is an agency that is responsible for installation and the president has given them the mandate that 36,000,000 meters must be installed by the end of June.” The NERC had stated its plans to review the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme as the deployment of prepaid meters to Nigerian homes suffers a setback. Despite the myriad of regulations put in place by different administrations over the years, most Nigerians have been on estimated billing, which is believed to be a means by the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to allegedly rip off customers.

Antigraft War: EFCC Warns ‘Whistleblowers

The Economic and Financial crimes Commission, EFCC, has expressed concern about the activities of supposed whistleblowers who mislead the agency through false information. The Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Abdurasheed Bawa, said despite due diligence by the EFCC, scarce investigative resources have been wasted by the agency in following up false leads that frequently come to a dead end. He said the activities of false whistleblowers detract from the noble intendment of the Whistleblower Policy of the Federal Government which seeks to incentivize information leading to the recovery of stolen wealth. Noting that the Whistleblower Policy was not designed as a tool for unscrupulous citizens to send law enforcement agencies on wild goose chase or set them against their perceived enemies, he vowed that the EFCC will not hesitate to prosecute any whistleblower who willfully provides the agency with false information. He, however, reiterated the Commission’s preparedness to work with genuine whistleblowers and acknowledged the breakthroughs which the EFCC recorded in its assets recovery drive, using information supplied by whistleblowers. He advised genuine informants to be cautious and ensure that they have accurate information before engaging with the agency. Bawa assured that the Directorate of Intelligence which was recently created will henceforth ensure that all information received by the EFCC is subjected to rigorous due diligence before action is taken.

I Seriously Regret Supporting Buhari In 2015 – Dino Melaye

The former lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye on Friday said he is full of regret for supporting the candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. Buhari contested under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) six years ago and defeated ex-President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the first time an opposition would floor a ruling party in Nigeria’s presidential election. Melaye was among those that canvassed support for Buhari’s presidential ambition, having dumped the PDP for the ruling APC. Six years down the line, the former federal lawmaker and PDP chieftain asked God and Nigerians for forgiveness, noting that this current administration is the worst in the nation’s history. “I apologise to God almighty who is the supreme controller of the universe and Nigerians for supporting Buhari,” he said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today. “The Buhari agenda is the greatest scam that came out of Africa. The Buhari presidency in 2015 is the greatest scam that came out of Africa. “The subject Buhari is the greatest common that came out of Africa. Once I was blind, now I can see. How can one remain in a political party and support the presidency with what is happening today in Nigeria? I regret seriously supporting that because we were scammed,” he stated. Senator Melaye also bemoaned what he described as corruption inherent in the ruling APC, noting that the current administration would inflate the mount of road contract. Giving an instance, he wondered why the government would budget ₦2.1billion for the rehabilitation of one kilometre of road. The PDP chieftain also spoke about the 2019 general elections where the main opposition fielded ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate. He said based on available statistics the PDP won the election, accusing the APC-led Federal Government of ousting former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen during the electioneering period. When asked if Atiku would join the 2023 presidential race again, the ex-lawmaker said although he is qualified to aspire for the highest office in the land, he (Melaye) is not in a position to speak for the ex-Vice President. “Atiku Abubakar is qualified in all ramifications to run for the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is not for me to ask him to run or not to run. Whether he should or not, my opinion is immaterial. “When we get to the presidential primaries, I will vote for an aspirant I feel is qualified to run for the PDP. That is my personal opinion,” he added. On the security challenges facing the country, the PDP chieftain faulted the APC’s handling of the security issue in the land. He noted that the Nigerian Army that has excelled in international peacekeeping operations have been reduced to a boy scout under the APC’s government. Melaye stated further: “Nigerians are fed up with this NGO called the APC. The insecurity in this country, we have never seen anything like this, I cannot fathom it. “The same Nigerian Army that did well in Sudan, Liberia, that went to Congo Brazzaville, that went to Sierra Leone, that has been going for United Nations’ assignments and flying in brighter colours is the same Army, Air Force, Navy that is behaving like a boy scout today all because of corruption, ineptitude. “There is no governance in government. We have no President, the President is not available. It has never been this terrible.”

Onnoghen: I was removed as CJN over rumours I met with Atiku

Walter Onnoghen, ex-chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), says he was removed from office over rumours that he met with Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president. Onnoghen also said he was never given the chance to defend himself over allegations he freed high-profile crminals. He opened up on his ordeal in office on Friday while speaking at a book launch in Abuja. A month to the 2019 elections, President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen as CJN based on a controversial order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. The CCT later convicted him for breaching the code of conduct for public officers and banned him from holding public office for 10 years. By then, he had already resigned after the National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended him for compulsory retirement. At the launch of the book written by Ogwu Onoja, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Onnoghen said he was never confronted with any of the allegations before being suspended. “There were rumours that I met with Atiku in Dubai. But as I am talking here today, I have never met Atiku one on one in my life. As if that was not enough, I was also accused of setting free, some high-profile criminals, whereas I ceased to be a high court judge as far back as 1978,” he said. “In supreme court, I did not sit alone, we sat in panel. In all these rumours and outright accusations, I was not given the opportunity to defend myself. “Let me make it clear that the office of the CJN was not for Onnoghen, but for all Nigerians who swore to guide and protect the constitution of the federal republic. “As I have said severally, judicial officers must be courageous. And I want to beg all serving judicial officers not to be discouraged by what happened to me in the hand of the executive arm of the government.” He asked judges in the country to always insist on justice because “Nigeria is doomed” without such courage. “Let me sound this note of warning that the appointment of judicial officers must never be allowed to be politicised, otherwise, democracy and democratic governance will be dead,” he said. “During my tenure, the problem of Nigeria was not the Nigerian judiciary, but those who had no regard for the rule of law. “We must therefore be committed to the rule of law and dispense justice without fear or favour. Truth stands. Crush it, it will still stand because it is truth.”

Tanzania Swears In Samia Suluhu Hassan As First Female President

Tanzania’s Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as president on Friday, becoming the first female head of state in the east African country after the death from heart disease of president John Magufuli, Africa’s most vocal COVID-19 sceptic. Hassan, 61, was sworn in at State House in the country’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam. She assumes the presidency following Wednesday’s announcement of the death of Magufuli after a more than a two-week absence from public life that drew speculation about his health, reports Reuters. In a statement, the presidency said Hassan would address the nation after being sworn in and would also hold a cabinet meeting. The absence of Magufuli since Feb. 27 had sparked rumours he had contracted the disease, although officials had denied he was ill. Hassan said he had died of heart disease. Described as a soft-spoken consensus-builder, Hassan will also be the country’s first president born in Zanzibar, the archipelago that forms part of the union of the Republic of Tanzania. Her leadership style is seen as a potential contrast from Magufuli, a brash populist who earned the nickname ‘Bulldozer’ for muscling through policies and who drew criticism for his intolerance of dissent, which his government denied. The new president will be faced with the task of healing a country that was polarized during the Magufuli years, analysts said, and building her own political base to govern effectively. Hassan will also be faced with a decision on whether to procure COVID-19 vaccines for the country of 58 million people. Under Magufuli, the government said it would not procure any vaccines until the country’s own experts had reviewed them.

‘It’s a huge waste’ — Peter Obi faults $1.5bn for Port Harcourt refinery repair

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state, has criticised the federal government for approving $1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery. On Wednesday, the federal executive council (FEC) approved $1.5 billion for the repair of the Port Harcourt refinery. Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum, said the rehabilitation will be done in three phases of 18, 24, and 44 months. “The Ministry of Petroleum Resources presented a memo on the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt refinery for the sum of 1.5 billion, and that memo was $1.5 billion and it was approved by council today,” Sylva had said. Reacting on Friday, Obi described the approval of $1.5 billion for the renovation of the refinery as “a huge waste”. The former vice-presidential candidate said the country is on life support and approving such a whopping amount to repair the refinery amounts to financial rascality. “The news of the planned expenditure of a whopping $1.5 billion for Port Harcourt refinery repairs is worrisome to well-meaning Nigerians. In light of our precarious economic situation, it is a huge waste,” he said. “Our country on life support, but sadly the managers of our affairs are worsening the situation by their financial rascality.” The Port Harcourt refinery has the capacity to refine over 200,000 barrels of oil per day at optimum capacity. According to the latest report from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), it did not refine any crude oil in September 2020.

Joe Biden Misses His Steps On Air Force One, Falls Multiple Times

United States President Joe Biden stumbled at least three times while ascending the stairs of Air Force One on Friday. He was flying to Atlanta to meet members of the Asian American community following the death of six women when the incident happened. After the third fall, Biden got up, paused momentarily and put himself together before making it the rest of the way up the jet stairs. There were many reactions on social media, with some saying the oldest president in US history (Biden is 78 years old) is frail. But in a statement, the White House said that Biden “is doing 100% fine” after his fall. “I know folks have seen that President Biden slipped on his way up the stairs to AF1, but I’m happy to report that he is just fine and did not even require any attention from the medical team who travels with him. Nothing more than a misstep on the stairs,” said White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield. The incident comes a day after the President had a bitter stand-off with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin had pulled out of an envoy to the US after Biden called him a killer in an interview earlier this week. But the Russian leader, who mocked Biden by saying it takes a killer to identify another killer, wished his American counterpart good health.
