Banditry, now oil well for bad eggs in power — IPOB

The Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has pointed accusing fingers at some unpatriotic elements in places of Authority as the key sponsors of bandits currently ravaging Nigeria. According to the pro-Biafra movement, there is no end in sight yet to the menace until the “masterminds in high places are unmasked”. IPOB in a press statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful alleged that banditry had become a gold mine for some powerful individuals in high places. “We the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB have observed with utter bewilderment that banditry has become a gold mine for some leaders. “It’s now another oil well for greedy, unpatriotic and evil-minded beings masquerading as leaders. They are feeding fat with blood money. “Bandits are now working together with some Government officials to steal public funds in the name of Ransome. ” Banditry and kidnapping will remain a lucrative business in Nigeria for as long as Government and self-acclaimed religious clerics keep negotiating with them. “Don’t you think that anyone advocating amnesty for murderous vampires like Fulani bandits in their grandmaster? ” If Nigeria were to be a normal country where there are sanity and decency all those people championing for amnesty for the killer bandits would have been arrested and put on trial? On how the menace will end, IPOB said:” Banditary will stop any day Nigeria leaders stopped pampering bandits but treat them as terrorists that they are. “This nonsense called banditry has continued to surge because Nigerians are not asking the right questions. “Banditry will end any day Nigerians begin to ask why the Authorities have not been courageous enough to declare killer herdsmen terrorists but quick to proscribe IPOB that is peacefully agitating for freedom. “Banditry will stop any day the real bandits in places of Authority are unmasked! Otherwise, what you see now will be a child’s play to what is to come.” On the recent shoot-on-sight order by the President against unauthorised persons carrying guns, IPOB said: “It wasn’t meant for everybody.” “We know who they have in mind. It’s only the daft that will think that such an order is meant for Fulani bandits and killer herdsmen carrying out the Fulani agenda. ” If a serving Governor can boldly come out to defend the carrying of guns by Fulani herdsmen, how do you ever think any of them is going to be arrested when their kits and kin are the ones going to enforce the order?”

Sexual harassment: Police hunt Fani-Kayode’s ex-nanny, arrest driver

The FCT police command has begun a hunt for Anthonia Uchenna, a nanny who accused her former boss and ex-Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, of sexual harassment. Others who are being hunted are: Emmanuel Anakan (former dog handler), Osakwe Azubuike (former carpenter), Oko Emmanuel (former cook), Daniel Gona (former driver), and Agbolo Edah (former cook), who accused the ex-minister of assault. However, the police have arrested Jonathan Gaiya, a former driver. The police also invited PUNCH reporter, Eniola Akinkuotu, who interviewed Fani-Kayode’s ex-workers. When contacted on the telephone, the Head, Legal Department at the FCT SCID, James Idachaba, said it was only an investigation and those accused would be charged to court if the Force established a prima facie case against them. When asked if it was the job of the police to investigate libel, Idachaba said, “I am a lawyer of over 20 years. I don’t investigate libel cases. “The petition sent to the CP and forwarded to me is that of criminal defamation. That is what I am investigating including fabrication of false statement. “We don’t do that (force people to recant statements) in our office. He (driver) was brought to my office and it was recorded. We are conducting investigation and if we see there is a prima facie case, we charge to court.” About eight of Fani-Kayode’s former domestic staff had recently visited The PUNCH office in Abuja where they took turns to level allegations of assault and sexual harassment against the former minister. The former domestic workers had also stated the allegations in sworn affidavits. In a bid to get a response from Fani-Kayode, The PUNCH had forwarded all the affidavits to him on March 9, 2021 in order to ensure balance. Rather than respond to the allegations, however, Fani-Kayode hurriedly wrote a petition to the State Criminal Investigation Department, FCT command, accusing his former workers of defamation and perjury. Some of the former domestic aides, who have now gone into hiding for fear of retribution, said the ex-minister resorted to strong-arm tactics to compel them to withdraw their statements. Acting on the petition, the police began tracking all the domestic servants and arrested Gaiya and made him to withdraw his allegations. Gaiya was subsequently released and then asked to return regularly to the police to make statements. The police also invited PUNCH reporter, Akinkuotu, who had conducted the interview. In a letter titled, ‘Letter of Invitation. Re: Eniola Akinkuotu’, signed by the officer in charge of the legal section, CSP James Idachaba, The PUNCH was asked to produce Akinkuotu on March 22, 2021. The letter, which was addressed to the Managing Director, PUNCH Nigeria Limited, dated March 17, 2021, with reference number AR:3000/FCT/X/D10/Vol.6/178, was delivered to The PUNCH office by one Iorshagher Terkaa It read in part, “This office is investigating a case of conspiracy, perjury and defamation of character wherein your staff named above is needed as a witness with a view to arriving at a successful conclusion. “In view of the above, you are requested to release the above named person to interview the undersigned on March 22, 2021 by 10.00hrs. As we await your prompt response, accept the esteemed regards of the commissioner of Police FCT.” The PUNCH published the interviews of the domestic servants despite spirited attempts by Fani-Kayode to get the newspaper to drop the story. One of the ex-workers, Oko, had told The PUNCH in the interview that the ex-minister once chased him around the house with a knife because he was not happy with his cooking. Oko, who worked for the ex-minister for six months, had said, “Chief Fani-Kayode is a paranoid soul that gets angry for no reason. There was a time he held a knife and was walking around the table and said ‘I will kill you now’, ‘I will send you to hell now’. I would be running around the kitchen while his police orderlies would be watching,” he said. Fani-Kayode, who had said he was not going to react to the allegations when contacted prior to the publication, however, sent a pre-litigation letter to The PUNCH on March 18, 2021, claiming that he was not given the opportunity to respond to the allegations. The former minister, in a letter signed by his lawyer, Adeola Adedipe, said the entire episode was orchestrated by his ex-lover and mother of his four sons, Precious Chikwendu, who is engaged in a custody battle with him. He asked The PUNCH to enter into negotiations for the possible payment of N6bn as damages for the defamation of his character. The letter read in part, “Please note that our client’s intention to institute a civil suit against your organisation for defamation alongside Ms Precious Chikwendu and her sister, Prisca Chikwendu, who are believed by our client to be the masterminds of this scandalous assemblage. “We are not unmindful of the roles played by Emmanuel Anakan (former dog handler), Anthonia Uchenna (former nanny), Osakwe Azubuike (former carpenter), Jonathan Gaiya (former driver), Oko Emmanuel (former chef), Daniel driver (former driver), and Agbolo Kosi Edah in actualising the maliciously scripted plan to defame our client. They will also be legally proceeded against. “However, for whatever it is worth, you may wish to enter into negotiations with us for the sum of N6bn as a token amount for penitence, apologise to our client on the platform you made available to scandalise him and thereafter assist the police with investigation.”

Police operatives in Ogun State have arrested 35-year-old Obinna Kalu for allegedly shooting his co-tenant Adijat Balogun. The suspect was arrested following a report made at Sabo/Ilupeju divisional headquarters by one Olayiwola Kareen. The complainant reported that while the victim was sleeping in her room on March 14, 2021, the suspect who has been at loggerhead with the victim sneaked into her room and shot her on the right rib. The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Thursday, said following receipt of the report, the DPO Sabo/Ilupeju division, Mustapha Opawoye, quickly led his men to the scene. A massive manhunt was launched for him, and with the cooperation of members of the public, he was eventually arrested on the 16th of March 2021.” According to him, the suspect initially denied shooting the victim, but when he was asked the rational behind his sudden relocation from the house, he was unable to argue further. He said the victim is currently recuperating at the Federal Medical Center Abeokuta. Oyeyemi said the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, had ordered the transfer of the case to homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.

Pensioners Threaten Nationwide Protest, Give FG 21-Day Ultimatum

Pensioners in Nigeria have threatened to embark on a nationwide protest giving the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum. The pensioners during a briefing at the nation’s capital, Abuja called on the Federal Government to implement the Consequential adjustment of pensions, arising from the implementation of the National minimum wage for Nigerian workers; hence they will occupy streets in protest. The National President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Abel Afolayan said it is disheartening that after two years of implementing the national minimum wage, the Federal Government is yet to approve their demands as stipulated in the constitutions. Quoting from the 1999 constitution with respect to sections 173(3) and 210 (3) as it affects the 5 -yearly review of pension, Afolayan said they should be a review or together with the salary reviews of workers The pensioners said further that two years after the adjustment of salaries and the implementation of the N30,000 national minimum wage as approved by the Government, they are still waiting for the approval of their own consequential adjustment of monthly pensions, in compliance with the above constitutional stipulation, even after several efforts by the national leadership of the union. It will be recalled that retired soldiers earlier in January occupied the Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja, over the non-payment of their pension arrears. The ex-servicemen appealled to the Federal Government to approve the payment of minimum wage arrears accruing to them between 2019 till date. They also demanded a stop on all deductions on the pension of all retired medical officers as well as the inclusion of officers who fought during the civil war on the military pension scheme.

Oyo landowners sold 200 acres to Fulani herders who terrorise us –US returnee

A farmer in the Ibaayin village, Elekuru-Olorisaoko axis of the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, Mrs Olajumoke Awosika, has narrated how herdsmen terrorised farmers in the area. In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH , the farmer said it was ironical that Yoruba landowners in the village sold over 200 acres to a Fulani herder who, alongside his battalion, have unleashed unimaginable terror and horror on farmers in the area within the last few months since the beginning of the activism of popular Yoruba rights campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho. The 57-year-old caterer, who returned to Nigeria from the United States in 2010, said she started organic farming five years ago after she couldn’t get some fresh farm produce in the market for her catering business. Awosika said she invested millions of naira on tens of acres in Ibaayin where she planted palm, turmeric, ginger, cassava, pepper, tomatoes, plantain, amongst others. Speaking with The PUNCH , the US returnee lamented that the criminal activities of herdsmen have disrupted farming operations in the rustic village. She said, “The first day they (herders) entered, they destroyed farms. This was on February 10, 2021. As soon as they (herdsmen) entered, they went into people’s farm, harvested their plantains for their cows and uprooted cassava on their farms. Those are farms around me. These are old men, people in their 60s, 70s and the herdsmen destroyed on a massive scale. They ate the crops, marched their cows to the two main rivers in the village, very clear and clean water that the villagers drink, the herders destroyed the water completely; their cows defecated and polluted the water.” Awosika said the villagers had a meeting and traced the tracks of the cows and discovered that they were owned by a Fulani herder who owns over 200 acres of land in the village. She said the villagers told the herder to ranch his cows on his expansive land but he would rather prefer the cattle to enter other people’s farmlands to graze. “Some villagers around us sold this Fulani man 200 acres. They know he is a cow herder yet they sold the land to him. With 200 acres, can you tell me there is nothing for those cows to eat? But they have to come outside to destroy people’s farms, of course, it was just sheer wickedness,” she said. The US returnee said the matter was reported to security agencies like the Nigeria Police Force and the Amotekun Corps in Oyo State but the herders only grew brazen and cruel in their unlawful activities which have led to the death of scores of farmers in the rustic agrarian village.

Imo teachers protest non-payment of 12 months salaries

Primary and secondary school teachers in Imo State on Thursday staged a peaceful protest over the state government’s failure to pay their salaries for 12 months consecutively. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the protest, which was held in front of the Government House, Owerri, temporarily halted human and vehicular movement in the area. It was learnt that the action was triggered by Governor Hope Uzodinma’s claim that teachers who had yet to receive their salaries were ‘ghost workers.’ The protesters carried placards with inscriptions, such as “Uzodimma lied to Imo people on teachers’ salary”, “We are not ghost workers, we have our employment letters, please pay us” and “Uzodimma come and see us and prove we are ghost workers.” The teachers, who wore long faces, alleged that they were last paid in February 2020, barely one month after Mr Uzodimma became governor. Grace Ajaegbu, a teacher at Community Secondary School, Udo in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area, said she had not been paid since the inception of the present administration. “I started teaching in 1992 but since the administration of this our governor began, I have not received a dime. “The last salary I got was in February, 2020, which is 12 months now. “I’m not a fraudster as the governor claimed, neither am I a ghost worker,” Mrs Ajaegbu said. Juliet Akalazu from Mbaitoli, who said she had been employed for eight years, said she had not been paid since March 2020. “The governor said we are fraudsters and ghost workers. That prompted us to come with our documents with which we were employed. “We want the governor himself to verify our claims. “Since one year, we have done about 15 different biometric verifications on this matter, yet the governor doesn’t want to pay us. “We submitted our documents to the offices of the accountant-general and head of (civil) service, yet we have not been paid,” she said. Governor Uzodinma’s media aide, Modestus Nwankpa, said the government had been consistent in the payment of teachers that were verified. Mr Nwankpa said the protesters were those that claimed to be teachers but refused to show up for verification. He said that no amount of blackmail would deter the government from sanitising the system from the “anomaly.” Editor’s Note: This photo is for illustrative purpose (NAN)

How Fani-Kayode asked his bodyguards to strip, flog me —Nanny

A nanny, Anthonia Uchenna, who once worked with a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says the ex-minister once ordered his bodyguards to strip her naked and flogged her. Uchenna, who visited The PUNCH office recently, also deposed to affidavits. She said the ex-minister had used the police to detain her on several occasions. Uchenna said, “I witnessed Chief Fani-Kayode direct his bodyguards to completely strip his chef naked on the allegation that they stole from him. He sometimes drags his staff to the police station where they remain for days. “I was treated in a similar way too. Chief Fani-Kayode instructed one Bako to strip me naked and then beat me up. I was taken to the police station.” The former nanny also accused the former minister of sexual harassment. Uchenna said, “Fani-Kayode has sexually harassed me at different occasions. One of those times was when his wife instructed me to take her son to Chief Femi Fani-Kayode’s room and as I was placing the child on the bed, I felt his hand on my buttocks. “He threatens to beat me up whenever I protest his harassments. I am aware that he sexually harasses other female staff too. I know that he sexually harassed one Blessing who also worked with him and as a result, she had to quit her job.” Uchenna, who said she was paid N80,000 per month, added that the ex-minister owed her three months salary. When contacted on the telephone, Fani-Kayode said he would not respond to the allegations.
