Money meant for arms missing under Buratai, ex-service chiefs —NSA

The National Security Adviser to the President , Maj . -Gen Babagana Monguno ( retd . ) , has said some funds meant for the purchase of arms to strengthen the country’ s anti -terror war got missing under the leadership of the ex – service chiefs . The ex – service chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff , General Abayomi Olonisakin ( retd . ); Chief of Army Staff , Lt -Gen . Tukur Buratai ( retd . ); Chief of Naval Staff , Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas ( retd . ); and Chief of Air Staff , Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar ( retd . ) . The NSA, in an interview with BBC Hausa on Friday, said , “ No one knows what happened to the money but by God ’ s grace , the president will investigate to find out whether the money was spent and where the arms went. ” The NSA also added that the new service chiefs have not seen any of the arms that the funds were supposed to be used to procure . President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed Buratai , Olonisakin, Ibas and Abubakar in July 2015 but the Commander- In -Chief replaced them in January 2021 after a persistent clamour from Nigerians that he introduce fresh blood in the country’ s anti – terror war , especially against Boko Haram in Nigeria ’ s North -East region . The new service chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff , General Lucky Irabor ; Chief of Army Staff , Lieutenant -General Ibrahim Attahiru ; Chief of Naval Staff ; Vice Admiral A . Z Gambo ; and Chief of Air Staff , Air Marshal Isiaka Amoo. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the NSA said on Thursday at a State House Briefing in Aso Villa, Abuja , that the President has released a lot of funds for the military to purchase firepower and win the insurgency fight. Monguno had also said that the Buhari- regime was not interested in dialogue with terrorists , bandits and other criminals as negotiation paints the government as weak and incapable. The NSA, therefore , vowed that the military , headed by the new chiefs has what it takes to crush the enemies of the Nigerian state without the help of mercenaries .

Official statement on ended marriage to Femi Fani Kayode

By Precious Chikwendu My name is Precious Chikwedu, a graduate of the University of Calabar, Miss Untied Nation 2014, and a Nollywood actress since 2007. Naturally, I maintain a calm disposition when in crisis, being goal-oriented and not a talker of any sort. But I am now forced to respond to these allegations for my children, well-being, and career path. As a student, I lived a moderately comfortable school life with self-sustaining businesses. Upon graduation, I got a job in a construction company. I bought my first car as an undergraduate and have chains of businesses before meeting FFK. I was also into modelling and had several endorsements as an International beauty queen, in addition to my job; these are verifiable facts. My Financial Status Before Marriage I am from a middle-class home where my Dad provides for all my needs. Moreover, I have always been industrious and a provider rather than a collector. Before I met FFK, I worked in a quarry/construction company in Calabar and lived an extremely comfortable life. I could afford cars within my means, caring for my parents and siblings. I built my parents a house in Nanka, my hometown, in 2012 before heading over to Kingston to win the Miss United Nations title in 2014. The Gold-Digger I am tagged a gold-digger due to misconception, ignorance and some people relying on deliberately planted falsehood. It is unfortunate that when I met Femi in 2014, he already had his bank accounts frozen by the EFCC, and they remain frozen to date. He opened another bank account when he joined the Goodluck Jonathan campaign team in 2015. The present government initiated an investigation based on the campaign funds source. And his campaign account was frozen again. Common sense can show that he may have been financially constrained while I was with him. My relationship with Femi at the time we met was more of me caring and having a deep concern for him while he was UNDER EFCC PROSECUTION. However, it later transited into a supposed romantic relationship that became oppressive, obsessive and abusive. Femi turned into a control freak that tried to control even the very breath that I took. Femi posed as a lonely and abandoned man who gave his all to his loved ones but was left alone in his moment of need (EFCC trial). He spoke bitterly of a Regina, who he said fled to her country, abandoning him when President Yar’Adua’s government ordered the EFCC to investigate him for money laundering. The court also mentioned her name. Marriage Under False Pretence I want to state clearly that my marriage to FFK was based on false pretence as he lied that he had divorced his last wife, Regina. I found his marriage certificate in 2016 during the EFCC raid at our then home. When I confronted him about this, he said that he is about starting Regina’s divorce process and added that he had not seen her in the last ten years. He further explained that he never fancied her and that their relationship was that of a mother and son kind. At the time I left, he was technically married to her former wife. On Regina’s claim that she gave her consent for me to be married to FFK, this is a ridiculous and blatant lie. How could she have permitted a relationship she only found out about through social media? This event happened precisely on FFK’s birthday when he deliberately leaked my pregnancy photos after another argument between us and I had to leave the house. He did that to show the world that I was pregnant with his baby. Suffice it to say that we had agreed to keep the pregnancy private before then. FFK’s Aggressive Behaviour While I was pregnant with the first child and later the triplets, FFK was habitually beating and mostly punching my stomach. Anytime he was angry and moody, describing my unborn babies as cockroaches or “a thing” that he will knock off my belly. In one of these attacks and kicking on my tummy, my late mom and my sister visited, and they threw themselves in between us to stop him from further attacks. In his anger, he hit my mum in the head. After that, FFK ended up accusing my sister of assault and got her detained at a police station for coming in-between his punches and me. Whenever I resist his humiliation and beating, he will deploy his bodyguards to wrestle me down. In most cases, he called CSP Aisha Yusufu, the then Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Asokoro Police Station. Who usually would come with her team to harass, handcuff, arrest or lock me behind the counter for hours until Femi was satisfied that I have been punished enough. My siblings were locked up countless times as well. He would always boast of his connections to the government and the system, saying nothing any member can do. During one of his domestic abuse with the DPAisha and her team from Asokoro police station, FFK instructed that they handcuff and strip me Naked. It was done in the presence of his domestic staff, bodyguards and attached VIP police officers. They injected me with a strange substance, and I lost consciousness. I woke up in a facility, which they later told me is a hospital, not knowing the number of hours or days I stayed there. My triplets were six months old at that time. As I say this, I am very afraid for my life. He keeps threatening me at every turn. I have since petitioned the Police but nothing has been done yet but I’m only trusting God. The Breakdown of the Marriage. The intervention of family members and FFK’S social circle was one hold back factor that kept me in the relationship much longer. Notwithstanding how dangerous, especially from Femi’s Mental Health challenges. I wanted to leave the marriage a long-time ago but could not due to the

INSURGENCY: We won’t invite foreign mercenaries, says NSA

THE Federal Government yesterday ruled out engaging mercenaries to assist Nigeria in the fight against insurgency, which has continued for more than a decade. It also vowed to come out in full force to fight insurgency in the country, saying it could no longer tolerate blackmail in any guise. Government’s declaration came on the heels of repeated calls by governors of the North-East states, led by Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other stakeholders that mercenaries be engaged to help defeat Boko Haram. This came on a day Niger State Government shut all public secondary schools in the state for two weeks, following incessant attacks by bandits. This is even as bandits who abducted 19 persons at Kutunku village in Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State Monday, demanded N200 million ransom Wednesday night to free their captives Bandits also went wild in Kaduna, killing seven persons, injuring several others, destroying properties and rustling cattle in Igabi, Giwa and Chikun Local Government Areas. Addressing journalists at the weekly presidential media briefing at the Council Chamber of State House, Abuja, yesterday, National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno, retd, who said the current service chiefs will deploy all necessary force to deal with terrorists and bandits operating in the country, also said dialogue with them suggests weakness and incapacity on the part of government. He said: “The President’s view and directive is that we will not engage mercenaries. When this administration came in, it’s true, we had these mercenaries helping out in the North-East. But the directive of the Commander-in-Chief is that we do not engage mercenaries when we have our own people to deal with this problem. “This is basically a presidential directive. And there are so many issues when you come to the issue of mercenaries. It has to do with the issue of national pride also. I know you’d say can pride be more of a concern than our security? I do understand that. “But what we are looking at here is that we have the resources, it’s just misapplication or under-utilisation that has affected our ability to deal with these people.” The NSA said the government will not succumb to blackmail and the use of criminals by proxies to harass innocent citizens. “While government is not averse to talking with these entities, it also has to fully apply its weight. You can’t (negotiate) with people who are unreliable and who will continue to hurt society. We will apply the full weight of government to deal with these criminals. “These are not people looking for anything that is genuine or legitimate, they’re just out to take calculated measures to inflict pain and violence on innocent people. We must deal with them the way they need to be dealt with. We will fully assert the government’s will. “We are also focusing on the associated dimensions of banditry and terrorism: Illegal drugs, the flow of small arms and light weapons, and illegal mining in places like Zamfara. These are some of the scenarios fueling the violence and we are already tackling them decisively. “Government wants to use military assets to eliminate them but if along the line, they come out, good. It paints the picture of weakness, incapacity,’’ he added. The NSA also disclosed that between March and December 2020, the military successfully took out 2,403 insurgents in the North East. Joint Security Network For Southeast Impossible — Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor and Chairman, Southeast Governors’ Forum, David Umahi, says it is impossible for the zone to have a joint security network. Umahi stated this on Thursday when he appeared on Channels Television’s morning show: ‘Sunrise Daily’. According to him, the governors in the zone are comfortable with the different security architectures at various states because the personnel are working very well. “What we have in Southeast states in a joint security committee which trains Neighbourhood Watch and the vigilante groups or other local security architectures at different states in the region.” If anybody tells you that there could be security personnel from different states to form joint security for this region, it is not a possibility. It is not workable even if the constitution permits it,” he said. He said having a joint security network would have challenges in terms of deployment of personnel from one state to another which they may not be familiar with. He said: “Every state is peculiar and so are their security challenges. The problem is that those complaining about the lack of joint security for the South-East are not living in the region. They don’t have the knowledge of how security works in the region. “The governors of the South-East States are comfortable with the different security architectures at various states because the personnel are working very well. There’s a problem of insecurity in the region, but the issue is not peculiar to the region alone, it’s a national problem. “We’re happy with what our local security personnel are doing in different states. We’re not God who assures 100 per cent security but we’re trying our best and this what our people want,” he said.

8 EU Countries Suspend AstraZeneca COVID-19 Shots Over Bloodclot Worries

Eight European countries that include Denmark, Norway, Italy, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg have stopped using Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a precaution to blood clot incidents in some countries. However, the EU medicines regulator says there is no indication that the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is linked to an increased risk of blood clots. Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control approved the use of the vaccine recently. Austria Austria had stopped using a batch of AstraZeneca shots, as authorities continue to investigate a death from coagulation disorders and an illness from a pulmonary embolism continued The European medicine regulator, EMA, said the vaccine’s benefits outweighed its risks and could continue to be administered. Countries in Europe are struggling to speed up a vaccine rollout after delivery delays from Pfizer and AstraZeneca, even as a spike in cases amid a more contagious virus variant has triggered fresh lockdowns in countries like Italy and France. Denmark After a 60-year-old woman, who was given an AstraZeneca shot from the same batch used in Austria, formed a blood clot and died, Denmark suspended the shots for two weeks. According health authorities in the country, the response was also prompted by reports “of possible serious side effects” from other European countries. Danish Health Minister, Magnus Heunicke wrote on Twitter, “It is currently not possible to conclude whether there is a link. We are acting early, it needs to be thoroughly investigated.” The vaccine would be suspended for 14 days in Denmark. The Director of Infection Prevention and Control at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI), Geir Bukholm told a news conference, “This is a cautionary decision.” Although FHI did not say how long the suspension would last, Bukholm said, “We … await information to see if there is a link between the vaccination and this case with a blood clot.” Iceland On Thursday Iceland suspended jabs with the vaccine as it awaited the results of an investigation by the EMA. Italy, also on Thursday, said it would suspend use of an AstraZeneca batch different to the one used in Austria. Health Experts According some health experts, there was little evidence to suggest the AstraZeneca vaccine should not be administered and that the cases of blood clots corresponded with the rate of such cases in the general population. “The problem with spontaneous reports of suspected adverse reactions to a vaccine are the enormous difficulty of distinguishing a causal effect from a coincidence,” Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, told Reuters. Evans added that the COVID-19 disease was very strongly associated with blood clotting. Phil Bryan, head of the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said reports of blood clots so far didn’t exceed what would have occurred naturally in the vaccinated population. “Available evidence does not confirm that the vaccine is the cause,” he said. Reuters reports that more than 11 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine have so far been administered across the UK. AstraZeneca told Reuters in a written statement the safety of its vaccine had been extensively studied in human trials and peer-reviewed data confirmed it was generally well tolerated. The drugmaker said this week there had been “no confirmed serious adverse events associated with the vaccine”. It said it was in contact with Austrian authorities and would fully support their investigation. No Evidence The European Union’s drug regulator, the EMA, said on Wednesday there was no evidence so far linking AstraZeneca to the two cases in Austria. It said the number of thromboembolic events – marked by the formation of blood clots – in people who have received the AstraZeneca vaccine was no higher than that seen in the general population, with 22 cases reported among the 3 million people who have received the shot as of March 9. EMA said it understood the decision by Denmark and Norway was taken as a precaution. Four other countries – Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and Latvia – have stopped inoculations from the batch while investigations continue, the EMA said. The batch of 1 million doses went to 17 EU countries. Swedish authorities said they did not find sufficient evidence to stop vaccination with AstraZeneca’s jab. “There is nothing to indicate that the vaccine causes this type of blood clots,” Veronica Arthurson, head of drug safety at the Swedish Medical Products Agency, told a news conference. The Danish Medicines Agency said it had launched an investigation into the vaccine together with corresponding agencies in other EU countries and the EMA. So far, 138,148 Danes have received a shot with AstraZeneca’s vaccine in a country of 5.8 million. The Nordic country, which also uses vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, is set to receive 2.6 million doses from AstraZeneca over the coming months. Denmark’s Health Authority said the final date for when it expects all Danes to have been fully vaccinated would be pushed back by four weeks to Aug. 15. Spain on Thursday said it had not registered any cases of blood clots related to AstraZeneca’s vaccine so far and would continue administering the shots. The EU’s drugs regulator on Thursday approved Johnson & Johnson’s single dose COVID-19 vaccine.

Two people were killed on Thursday when armed robbers struck at a commercial (Wema) bank in Okuku, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun. The Commissioner not Police in the State, CP Wale Olokode said “while escaping, the armed robbers were shooting sporadically and gunshots hit two persons. The CP said the armed robbers couldn’t break the bank’s vault and left hurriedly before policemen got to the scene. He initially said no one was killed. He said policemen have been deployed to ensure the arrest of the robbers and assure that they would be apprehended and brought to book.
