Minimum wage: Federal salary structure can’t be imposed on states, says Fayemi

Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti, says federal salary structure should not be imposed on states. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliated unions, on Wednesday, embarked on a nationwide protest against the bill seeking to move the national minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list. The bill, which was sponsored by Garba Datti, lawmaker representing Sabon Gari federal constituency, seeks to decentralise the payment of minimum wage to workers in the country, to allow states to pay according to their financial capacities. The bill has passed first and second reading in the house of representatives. Speaking when he hosted pro-chancellors of state-owned universities on Thursday in Abuja, Fayemi, who doubles as chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), said the same salary structure should not be imposed on states, because the federal and state governments do not have similar economic situations. Fayemi made the statement as part of deliberations on solutions to problems faced by state-owned tertiary institutions. “You can’t impose a federal salary structure on states, because we do not all have the same economic or financial situations,” Fayemi said. “I, for example, do not have the resources of Lagos state, so you won’t expect me to earn the same salary as the governor of Lagos. “The people you appoint as vice-chancellors need to speak truth to power. They need to be able to bite the bullet, and not just be a ‘yes’ person. “We need to work together to confront these issues. We are running glorified secondary schools as universities by this system, and you have to help us in insisting that the institutions, too, do the right thing.” Fayemi also agreed with the pro-chancellors that politics should not be involved in the nation’s school system. Meanwhile, the pro-chancellors, led by Yusuf Ali of Osun State University, said the seamless educational progression that the country should be experiencing is being hampered by a paucity of funds. The visiting team, which had representatives from all the 48 universities owned by states, pleaded with governors to take over the burden of payment of salaries of state universities.

No reported cases of adverse reactions after AstraZeneca vaccination in Nigeria, says NPHCDA

Following the suspension of the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine by several European nations on Thursday, due to reports of a serious blood clot incidents, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, has said no such reactions have been reported in Nigeria. Several European nations had suspended use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday due to the incident that reportedly caused about 30 incidents of harmful blood clots in patients who received the vaccine, including at least one case in Denmark where the patient died. In a press statement posted on its Twitter handle on concerns about the safety of the vaccine, the NPHCDA however said it was monitoring the situation. “We are aware of precautionary concerns that have been raised regarding one specific batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine, namely ABV5300. “We understand that investigations are being conducted to determine if the batch is in any way linked to an observed side effect. While we await the outcome of the investigations, it is important to clearly state that Nigeria did not receive any doses from the batch of vaccines which is at issue. Further, the statement noted: “Vaccinations in Nigeria started earlier this month and we have not observed any similar adverse reactions. All side effects reported by those who have been administered the vaccine have been mild. We are satisfied that the clinical evidence indicates the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to be safe and effective. “Our assessment is in line with countries such as Spain and the UK who have indicated that they will continue to administer the vaccine because it remains an important tool to protect against COVID-19. The safety of vaccines delivered to Nigeria is paramount to the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. “For this reason, it has enhanced multi-sectoral collaboration among stakeholders and technical entities such as the FMOH, NPHCDA, NAFDAC, WHO, and UNICEF whose cooperation ensures the highest global standards are met for vaccines delivered to Nigeria before they are distributed to Nigerians. Clear, rigorous protocols are being followed to safeguard the health of Nigerians. “We are continuing to monitor the developments regarding ABV5300 batch and will share further information as it becomes available. In the meantime, we encourage Nigerians who are among those being prioritised in the current phase to continue their confidence and enthusiasm for our vitally important national vaccine program. Together, we can save lives,” the statement noted.

US: We’re ready to help Nigeria end ‘disgusting’ abduction of schoolchildren

The United States has expressed readiness to help Nigeria end the frequent abduction of schoolchildren in northern parts of the country. Michael Gonzales, deputy assistant secretary at the US Bureau of African Affairs, said America is willing to assist in ending the security challenge if Nigeria seeks its help. He was speaking on Thursday during a press briefing organised by the bureau, which was monitored by TheCable. In 2021, there have been two cases of mass abduction of schoolchildren in northern Nigeria during attacks by bandits. TheCable found that more than 1,000 children have been taken hostage from their schools in such attacks in the last seven years. At the briefing on US counterterrorism efforts in Africa, Gonzales said America is “disgusted” by the pattern of mass abductions which he described as an internal security threat. “We are disgusted by this pattern of mass abduction of schoolkids and our condolences go out to the individuals affected and their families,” he said. “This certainly appears by all indications to be a situation from criminal gangs motivated by monetary and economic factors. There is no indication that terrorists, whether Boko Haram or ISIS West Africa, are involved in this. “The United States is ready to provide appropriate support for the Nigerian government if requested to do so. Longer term, we seek to help develop the capabilities of the Nigerian security services in order for them to adequately respond to the internal threats that the country faces.” The official, however, added that the US is “encouraged” by President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to replace the service chiefs as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s security woes. “We are looking forward to partnering with them to continue to build the capacities of the Nigerian military to be able to better protect and defend their people,” he said.

Buhari reaffirms shoot-on-sight order for illegal bearers of AK-47

President Muhammadu Buhari says he has given security chiefs orders to “go harder” on criminals and shoot anyone who possesses an AK-47 rifle illegally. Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, quoted Buhari as saying this when he met with the National Council of Traditional Rulers on Thursday at Aso Rock. The president said his administration has recorded “appreciable successes” in the north-east and south-south parts of the country, as regards security. “What surprises is what is happening now in the north-west where the same people, with the same culture are killing each other, taking their livestock and burning properties,” Adesina quoted Buhari as saying in a statement. “As a result of that, we had a four-hour meeting of the National Security Council attended by the ministers of internal affairs, defence, foreign affairs, service chiefs, chief of defence staff, the inspector-general of police and others and we gave clear instructions. “One thing that got to the press which I read myself was that anyone with an AK-47 will be shot. This is because AK-47 is supposed to be registered and it is only given to security officials. “We closed the borders for some years but the intelligence report I’m getting on a daily basis is that those who are conducting the abductions, the killings and so on are still not short of arms and ammunition.” Buhari said traditional rulers should use their positions as bridge builders in their communities to complement government efforts at ensuring peace and security. The president also appealed to the monarchs to assist the government in fishing out those whose goal is to cause mayhem. “You are the bridge builders in each of your communities,” Buhari said. “No one is better placed with your strength of moral authority to ensure that people who visit your communities for either business, leisure or any honest and credible reason are protected and made to feel at home.” Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, was the first to disclose that Buhari had given a shoot-on-sight order.
