Bawa: I’ll resign if asked to do anything unlawful

Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says he will resign from office if he’s asked to do anything against the law. In a series of tweets on Saturday, the anti-graft agency said Bawa stated this on Friday when he featured on One-on-One, a programme on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Bawa said Nigerians need to stop “worshipping people that have money”, and start questioning the sources of their wealth. He said he would not do anything contrary to his conscience, and that the EFCC under his watch will abide by the law. “We need to change our attitudes in Nigeria. We are in the habit of worshipping people that have money in the society, but never bother to ask questions about their source of income,” he was quoted to have said. “In winning the fight against corruption, we are engaging all stakeholders including religious leaders, community leaders and others. “We are going to embark on massive public enlightenment to sensitise people on the need to shun corruption in all its forms. “I will continue to do what is right. The Commission under my watch will continue to abide by the rule of law. If anybody asks me to do anything contrary to my conscience or against the rule of law, I will resign my appointment. “We have just created Directorate of Intelligence. We need to re-engage ourselves with all our stakeholders in the fight against corruption, because this is something we cannot do alone; all hands must be on deck.”

Boko Haram throws Maiduguri into darkness again, blows up power tower

Barely 72 hours after electric power was restored in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday blew up another transmission tower in the city. Sources said the insurgents planted explosives on each leg of the tower, which they detonated at about 6 a.m. On Wednesday, jubilant residents of Maiduguri were seen in a video that trended on social media as they celebrated the return of electricity after nearly two months of blackout. It took officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) that long to repair the transmission tower brought down by the insurgents at a location about 50km from Maiduguri. While reconnecting the installation, three TCN officials were severely injured by a landmine planted by the insurgents. Another official was said to have lost his life after falling off a tower. The Saturday morning attack did not come as a surprise as residents had expressed fears of the insurgents plunging the city into darkness again as soon as the lights were restored. A security agent said the tower that was attacked was not far from the one brought down in January. “It is a major setback for Maiduguri because the tower that was brought down has affected other poles,” he said. “They planted bombs on each leg of the towér which caused it to go down, and they had also fired at some of the high tension wires that caused the lines to cut into bits,” he added. It took officials of the TCN and the Borno government nearly two months to temporarily fix the first tower. With the latest attack, residents of Maiduguri would suffer from the attendant harsh economic impact the resumed blackout would cause. The TCN and the Borno state government were yet to speak on the development at the time of filing this report.

Tinubu stumbles at Arewa House lecture in Kaduna

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, tripped over his foot and stumbled on Saturday in Kaduna State. A video footage posted by @daily_nigerian showed the former Lagos State governor crashing between two chairs on arrival at the 11th Arewa House Lecture in Kaduna. Tinubu was quickly supported by his aides and nearby guests. The 68-year-old politician was not the first politician to stumble in public. Just last week, 78-year-old US President, Joe Biden, lost his footing and tripped multiple times while walking up the steps to Air Force One. The PUNCH had earlier reported that Tinubu was the chairman of the lecture held in honour of one of Nigeria’s founding fathers, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello. He spoke on the topic, ‘Reduction of the Cost of Governance for Inclusive Growth and Youth Development in Northern Nigeria in a Post-COVID-19 Era’. The APC stalwart said though Nigeria has exited recession, the country’s economy remained weak . He also warned against wasteful spending amongst government officials, saying government must spend money to yield economic returns for the benefit of the masses.

Outrage, condemnation greet Obaseki’s demolition of opposition politicians’ properties

AS at 3:45 pm on Tuesday, Mrs Precious Odubu, wife of the younger brother to the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr Pius Odubu was relaxing at home with her children without any inkling of what would befall them in the next 15 minutes. And from nowhere she noticed armed policemen entering their compound situated off Dennis Osadebey Avenue GRA through another route outside their entry gate. She was frightened but summed up courage to ask them who they were and with indifference she said they asked her if there were children inside the house that she should bring them out because the state government wanted to demolish their house and that as soon as she ran inside to bring out her two years old baby who was sleeping, they beckoned and suddenly a bulldozer immediately began the mission to bring down the house without even allowing her to go back inside and salvage any personal or family effect she could get. The bulldozer under watch of armed security men including policemen, army and NSCDC reduced the house to rubble. At the site of the immediate past Secretary to State Government (SSG), Professor Julius Ihonvbere who is now the member representing Owan Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, the house which is about 500 metres to the government house gate was still under construction, the bulldozer brought down the structure which was nearing completion. The same scenario played out at the building besides the Police Cottage Hospital belonging to sports enthusiast and marketer, Mike Itemuagbo where a two bedroom bungalow was situated and was also destroyed. It was gathered that the occupant of the house may have heard of what was to befall him and was said to have moved some of his belongings out of the place but a barber who also acted as security was not so lucky as he was said to have lost some of his personal effects in his shop when the bulldozers came there. This action of the state government has assumed political colouration as all the affected persons are allies of former governor of the state and immediate National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and is being seen as a case of vendetta rather than state interest. Odubu was deputy to Oshiomhole for the eight years he was governor, Ihonvbere was Secretary to State Government (SSG) under Oshiomhole while Itemuagbon though not an active politician initiated the Okpekpe race that brought international recognition to Edo State. He is said to be a friend of Oshiomhole and also Obaseki. When Oshiomhole and Obaseki fell apart, Itemuagbo was said to have distanced himself from politics and party intrigues. Destruction of his house too must have been a surprise to followers of the Edo politics. Reactions The state government said the action was taken in the interest of the state and not for any other reason. A statement by Secretary to State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie Esq stated that the C of Os of the properties were revoked on December 21, 2020 including the one belonging to Governor Godwin Obaseki because they were gifted out as parting gifts by the immediate past governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to former political office holders, companies and private individuals. The statement said those were the only properties owned by the state government in GRA before they were gifted out which he said would have created fresh burden on government buying land from the public if it needs them for development in future. Odubu According to the former deputy governor, Dr Pius Odubu, ”The information came to me this afternoon, March 23, that my property situated at Dennis Osadebe avenue has been brought down by agents of the government on the directive of the governor. ”Before now, my attention was brought to a publication in the Observer newspaper in January that the C of O of my property have been revoked without prior notice given to me. ”I went to court in the matter and I am surprised that after they have been served, the government still went ahead to bring down my house with a bulldozer. “My younger one was in the house when it was brought down and they did not give them notice nor allowed to remove any of their properties before destroying the place,” he said. Hon Washington Osifo (Phd) The member-elect for Uhunwonde local government area, Hon Washington Osifo (Phd), a lawyer, likened the action to late military dictator, General Sani Abacha. He said “Gen Sani Abacha, once upon a time, was the most feared General and Head of state in Nigeria. He dished out orders as though he was God. “He ordered the detention and execution of helpless and harmless Nigerians. “Although many died of unbearable heartbreaks, more than many saw his remains wrapped up in a cheap mat and buried just like that. “Men in power and authority be careful what you do with power and authority at your disposal for it is only transient. Isere To Felix Isere, also a lawyer, “even if the governor has a justifiable reason to take over the property, they ought to have sent a notice, people were living in Odubu’s house before the demolition but they didn’t do that even when those people were appealing to them to allow them to pick their personal things, they did not allow them. They destroyed everything so it was a clear case of malice and vindictiveness” Anonymous. A chieftain of the PDP who wants to remain anonymous but was very emotional said “I have never seen this kind of thing in my life, these are properties that have C of Os. You started by destroying Kabaka’s hotel, a place you could have used as Covid-19 Isolation Centre or even resident or treatment centre. “He went to this house and did not allow the residents to take a pin out, the only thing they did was to ensure that

One of the collation officers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the ongoing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency bye-election has reportedly been abducted. The victim identified as Engr. Mike Ozoemena is the collation officer of the APC in Aba North Local Government Area of Abia State. Ozomena, who was also the Campaign Officer of Mascot Uzor Kalu, the APC candidate in the constituency, was said to have been abducted by gunmen in the early hours of the day. In a telephone conversation with Daily Trust, Spokesman of the APC in Abia, said efforts made to locate Ozomena have been fruitless. “Engr. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he is not aware of the kidnap as the party is yet to make a formal complaint to the police. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed the election for Saturday after the seat of Ossy Prestige, the lawmaker who represented the constituency, was declared vacant. Prestige, who was a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) died in a German hospital on February 6, 2021. MEANWHILE Staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission and voters scampered for safety on Saturday when an explosion rocked the Umuola Hall, Ward 8, Ogbor Hill, Aba North Council in Abia State. The incident occurred during the ongoing bye-election into the Aba North-South Federal Constituency seat. Although no life was lost in the explosion but electoral materials were destroyed. Security agents had stormed the area and restored order, and while voting had resumed. A voter, who gave his name as Chinedu Eze, said they were in the queue when a loud sound enveloped the area and everyone fled. He said, “We were in the queue, some people were being accredited to cast their votes when we heard a loud sound. Everybody took to their heels. It was a bomb and we didn’t know where it came from.” Efforts to get the reaction of the INEC as well as the State Commissioner of Police, Janet Agbede, were not successful as of the time of filing this report.

Tinubu: We Must Admit That The Economy Remains Weak Despite Exit From Recession

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said the country’s economy is still weak despite exiting recession. The APC chieftain spoke in Kaduna, on Saturday, while delivering a speech as the chairman of the 2021 Sardauna Memorial Lecture held in honour of one of Nigeria’s founding fathers, the late Sir Ahmadu Bello. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had in February announced that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product recorded a slight growth of 0.11 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2020. According to the NBS, the development showed that the country had exited recession. But speaking on the topic “Reduction of the Cost of Governance for Inclusive Growth and Youth Development in Northern Nigeria in a Post-COVID-19 Era,” Tinubu said there is still more to be done. The former governor of Lagos said in spite of measures put in place by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, the country’s economy still remains weak with “too much unemployment”. He said: “In the midst of our local challenges came the COVID-19 pandemic, with its debilitating impact on the global and domestic economies. Nigeria, like many other countries, has not been spared the impact of the pandemic. “Commendably, however, President Muhammadu Buhari has been carefully steering the country through the pandemic such that the negative impact on us and the economy has not been as harsh as it might have been. The economy’s relapse into recession has ended but we must admit the economy remains weak with too much unemployment and resources left idle.” The ex-governor also stressed the need to cut down on wasteful spending among government officials to ensure Nigerians benefit from the economy. Tinubu added: “Fiscal wisdom but not necessarily austerity is required for an economy like ours in a time like this, to ensure equitable wealth redistribution and meaningful use of resources. “The years have shown that the private sector is much too weak to spur the growth we need. If the private sector could manage this feat, it would have already done so. Where the private sector is too weak or unable, the government must fill the void. “This means government must not be afraid to embark on an active fiscal policy to create jobs, build infrastructure and develop our industrial sector as well as continue to improve agriculture. This means government must spend money but spend it on those things that bring the requisite economic returns for the nation.” Addressing the rising tension in Nigeria, Tinubu said the country cannot tackle criminality and youth restiveness without creating job opportunities for them. He added: “While states and local government must shape their budgets to fit their revenues, the federal government can and should spend more to create more jobs for the youth in both the north and south which is key to eradicating restiveness and sundry criminality among the youth. Urban populations are growing but urban jobs are not. Here, government must implement a national industrial policy to encourage key industries to begin to employ this growing urban work force.”

Despite Sharia, Brewery Named Biggest Taxpayer In Kaduna

The Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB) has been recognized as the biggest taxpayer in Kaduna, bagging the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) 2020 Highest Taxpayer, Pay-As-You-Earn Award. The company engages in the brewing and marketing of Lager beer, Stout and non-alcoholic malt drinks. The company’s product range includes Star, Gulder, Legend Extra Stout, Maltina and Malta. Adjudged as the political capital of Northern Nigeria, Kaduna is one of the 12 northern states to have adopted the Shari’a Law which prohibits the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages. There have been many instances of destruction of alcoholic beverages in state’s such as Kano, Bauchi and Jigawa where Shari’a Law is practical, to the chagrin of citizens who wonder why states who share from revenues accruing from sale of alcoholic beverages a across the country could hypocritically ban same in their domain on religious grounds. The Executive Chairman, KADIRS, Dr Zaid Abubakar, described Nigerian Breweries at the agency’s 2020 Grand Dinner and Award Night, in Kaduna on Friday, as one of the “committed” taxpayers in the state. Mr Abubakar urged other corporate organisations to emulate Nigerian Breweries and other committed taxpayers in the state by paying the needed tax voluntarily and as and when due. “The essence of the award was to motivate taxpayers in the state to continue to pay their taxes voluntarily so that the state government will continue to deliver quality services to the people,” he explained. Receiving the awards from the state’s finance commissioner, Abbay Ajayi, the company manager in Kaduna thanked KADIRS for recognising the efforts of the company in fulfilling its tax obligation and contributing to the development of the state. Mr Ajayi said that the Nigerian Breweries has paid a total of N1.4 billion to Kaduna state government as PAYE and levies, among others between 2018 and 2020. “We have equally paid N315 million to Kaduna State Water Cooperation as water bills from 2016 to date. “We have so far invested N45 billion in Kaduna state from inception to date and planned to invest N7.0 billion in the state in 2021 alone. “Kaduna has been a home for all of us at the Nigerian Breweries since the 1960s and we are still thriving due to the conducive business environment that have made Kaduna more home than any other,” he said. He reiterated Nigerian Breweries’ continued investment and support to the development agenda of the Kaduna state government and Nigeria. A total of 23 taxpayers were honoured as part of efforts to encourage voluntary tax compliance and boost revenue generation for the development of the state.

Anambra cargo airport to be ready in April, says Obiano

Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra says the Anambra Cargo Airport in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government will be ready for use in April. Obiano disclosed this when he led the joint committee of the National Assembly on inspection of the project on Saturday. The governor said his administration was determined to deliver the airport in view of its enormous economic importance to the state and southeast zone and Nigeria at large. He expressed satisfaction with the speed and quality of work at the site since January 2020 when the project started. Obiano assured that at the end of April air operation would have started fully. He described the airport as one with the longest runway in Nigeria with a satellite landing system to aid aircraft land any time of the day and in all weather. “One other important thing is that this is the only airport in Nigeria that has a satellite landing system, you can confirm that from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority. “We did that deliberately because this is going to be one of the busiest in Africa because of the orientation of our people who are business people and travelers,“ he said. Speaking on the technical details of the project, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor said the airport has two runways with 100 per cent erosion control which would prevent flooding during rain. Ifejofor said it was a high-tech project with good local content, adding that it was being executed by the competent company under the supervision of some of the best consultants in the aviation sector. “This runway has 06, 024, it has a length of 3.7klm, the width is 60 metres, 45 metres carriage way and 15 metres shoulders and the category is 4F, meaning it can take any Airbus, “The orientation is that you can land on two sides, you can land on 06 or 024, it has category two light and satellite landing system, one-kilometer racer to take care of overrun. “We have four grids on either side or a diversion channel to Oyi River,” he said. In his remark, Sen. Smart Adeyemi, Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation said the airport project was viable and could compete favourably with Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. He said the National Assembly joint committee would go back and think about how the Federal Government could assist in the project. “Aviation is key to social-economic development for any political entity, we have heard about this airport and decided to come and see for ourselves. “Most airports in Nigeria are not viable but they are essential, Lagos Airport contributes about 65 per cent to our aviation but I can say that next to Lagos is where we are standing,” he said. Also speaking, Sen. Uche Ekwunife said in spite of political learning, Obiano deserved commendation for what he was doing on the airport project.

I caught my 4-month pregnant wife in bed with another man, cleric tells court

A cleric, Abdulrasheed Olalere narrated how he caught his wife, Mariam in bed with another man when she was just four months pregnant. Olalere who filed a divorce suit against Mariam, accused her of infidelity and attempts to elope with her lover. He said they settled and he accepted his wife back after he caught her cheating on him with another man. ”I caught Mariam in bed sleeping with another man when she was just four months pregnant. ”I was angry with her but we settled the matter. The man also laid claims to the baby. But after medical reports, revealed that the date given by the man proved him wrong about the date of the pregnancy, I accepted her back.” According to a NAN report, the cleric added that after interventions from different people, things started going on smoothly between them until his wife went back to her lover. He said “My lord, I caught her trying to elope with that same man. Mariam is wayward.” Reacting to all the allegation, Mariam insisted that her husband was irresponsible and uncaring. She didn’t deny that she attempted to elope with her ex-boyfriend. The Mapo Customary Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday dissolved the six-year-old marriage in the interest of peace. The President of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade held that the marriage was initially not built on a solid foundation of love and trust. Odunade awarded custody of the child to Mariam and directed Olalere to pay N5,000 for the child’s monthly upkeep.
