Myanmar military ‘kills 50 protesters’ on Armed Forces Day

Myanmar’s security forces on Saturday reportedly killed at least 50 people, including children, protesting the country’s February military coup. Aung San Suu Kyi, the country’s de-facto leader, and other senior government officials were detained following a coup on February 1. Protesters trooped out to the streets of Yangon, Mandalay and other towns as the country’s generals celebrated Armed Forces Day despite the military’s threat on state-run TV to shoot protesters “in the head or back” on Friday. Myanmar Now reports that “a one-year-old baby was wounded after being shot in the eye with a rubber bullet in the Thamine area of Yangon’s Mayangone Township”. Over 300 people have been reportedly killed by the military regime since the coup. The European Union’s delegation to Myanmar described the Armed Forces Day as “a day of terror and dishonour”. It condemned the attack while calling for an end to the violence. “This 76th Myanmar armed forces day will stay engraved as a day of terror and dishonour. The killing of unarmed civilians, including children, are indefensible acts. The EU stands by the people of Myanmar and calls for an immediate end of violence and the restoration of democracy,” the EU wrote on its Twitter handle. Buhari to leaders: Always lead by example

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on leaders at all levels to show exemplary leadership, so as to overcome the current challenges facing the country. President Buhari made the call in a message to the 2021 annual lecture of Arewa House, held on Saturday in Kaduna. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the president also called on Nigerians to put the nation first, in all their dealings, as was done by the country’s founding fathers, in the likes of Sir Ahmadu Bello. He stressed that good leadership would provide a platform for the nation to overcome its challenges and unlock the huge potentials of the country. “Our ability to collectively address the challenges in our country today will go along way in unlocking its huge potentialities and the starting point is leadership by example,” he said. He also called for a commitment to inclusiveness and the provision of quality education, particularly for girls, to develop to their full capacity. Buhari added that there was a need to improve coordination and collaboration among leaders, for good governance at Federal, State and Local government levels, in a bid to take the country to enviable heights. “We must not assume that the problems of our country should and can be solved by President Buhari administration alone. “Yes, we lead by example, but every stakeholder has a responsibility to work collectively and put the interest of our country first and foremost. “We must not forget the virtue of selfless service, which was inherent in our founding fathers, like the Sardauna. “We have no choice if indeed we are committed to the welfare, prosperity, peace and security of our people, but to be selfless in service and honour them by making peace and security as a cardinal point in all our actions,” the president stated. He reiterated that his administration would not waiver in its commitment to enhancing security, building the economy and fighting corruption. Also speaking, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Umar Ibn Garba-El-Kanami, noted that security challenges had slowed down northern Nigeria’s economic development. He urged the participants to come up with new measures to tackle the challenges and move the region forward.

Benue leaders to military: Forest hideouts of bandits are all known

Last Saturday, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state narrowly escaped death when suspected herdsmen militia opened fire on him in his farm at Tyo Mu community in the outskirts of Makurdi town on Makurdi-Gboko road. The Governor in his usually routine visited his farm located in the community close to the shore of River Benue and some two kilometers from the Makurdi-Gboko Highway. Unknown to him and his security team, the deadly armed militia who obviously camped in the expansive forest just across River Benue had laid an ambush for them with the aim of assassinating him. Luckily, his security aides were able to repel the attack and after running for about one and half kilometers to where his official car was parked, the Governor was safely escorted back to Benue Government House. The assailants who met stiff resistance from the Governor’s security aides thereafter fled into the forest, directly facing Tyo Mu community on the other side of River Benue, which seems to be their base, from where they launch attacks on communities on the outskirts of Makurdi town. The bandits easily access parts of Makurdi at this time of the year from the forest which obviously is their base because River Benue has substantially dried up hence allowing the assailants unhindered escape route back to their base after any attack. Governor Ortom who had a close encounter with this daredevil armed gang expressed worry that the bandits have taken over the forested communities from where they unleash mayhem on the innocent citizens. The Governor in his account of the Saturday incident said, “I want to call on the security agencies to fish these people out. They are in the forest between Makurdi and Abinsi. They are living there and coming out to commit atrocities and evil, killing our people, maiming them, raping women and destroying our farmlands. “And anytime our Livestock Guards and security agencies go after them, they run back into the forest across the river,” he said. This account of the Governor alluded to the fact that these bandits have converted the forests as their safe haven and operational base. Aside Benue, other states of the federation that are bearing the brunt of the bandits recount similar experiences of the armed men storming their communities from known forests after which they beat the retreat to such forests regarded as their operational base. Interestingly, after the attack on Governor Ortom, the Commander of OPWS, Maj. Gen. Adeyemi Yekini decided to deploy his troops to the Tyo Mu general area and the forest. Findings indicated that the troops are combing the entire forest and have already found and burnt a makeshift camp said to belong to the bandits. According to him Gen. Yekini his troops would intensify patrol and surveillance of the general area where the Governor was attacked to help check the activities of the militia herdsmen and other criminal elements emerging from the nearby forest to unleash mayhem on the people. “We will remain here in the coming days to clear the forests. No mater what it takes, we will do it and we will eventually sustain patrols in the forests in order to forestall a repeat of what happened and also dislodge the bandits completely from the forests,” he said. Reacting to the development, Convener of Middle Belt Movement for Justice and Peace, MBMJP, Comrade Joe Bukka commended the OPWS Commander for the decision to mount surveillance on the forest. He said, “that is what we expect to be done in all parts of the country where bandits, Boko Haram, armed herdsmen and criminals have been unleashing mindless attacks on innocent Nigerians. “What is stopping the military and security agencies from storming these forests and leveling them since these are the hideouts of the criminals. Their hideouts are known, so why can’t the military storm them. “The decision of the troops in Benue to comb the forest is a welcome development and we expect same to be extended to other states where these bandits are tormenting the people. “The security agencies and the government must not continue to treat the worsening insecurity with kid gloves. It is time to storm the forests, take them over and chase the criminals out. “The idea of some persons going into the forests to negotiate with bandits must stop. They should be declared terrorists and dealt with accordingly. “The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, didn’t engage in this type of bloodletting yet they were declared a terrorist organisation and nobody negotiated with them, why is anyone negotiating with the bandits? “Besides, the leadership of herdsmen groups have been making inflammatory statements right there in Abuja, claiming responsibility for some of the incidents that have taken place in Benue state. We expected nothing but their arrests. If that is not done, then we will all conclude that this government is not serious about tackling insecurity in the country.” On his part, a security expert, Mr. Terrence Kuanum said, “the decision of the troops in Benue to take over the forest from where an attack was launched on the Benue Governor last Saturday is a welcome development. “That is what we expect across the country where cases of banditry are being reported daily. The forests where the armed men operate from should be taken over and cleared by the military. These forests are known. “If you dislodge the bandits from their comfort zone it becomes very easy to neutralize them. That should be the priority of the security agencies. All the forests where these people operate from are known and should be taken over by our security forces, whether sambisa or whatever. “The armed forces should declare ‘operation take over the forests’ if we are serious about ending the worsening insecurity and spate of bloodletting in parts of the country,” he said.

Biden invites Buhari to climate change summit

US President Joe Biden has invited President Muhammadu Buhari to a virtual climate change summit scheduled to hold in April. Buhari was invited to attend the summit alongside 39 other world leaders including four presidents from Africa. The White House said in a statement on Friday that the ‘Leaders summit on climate’ will underscore the urgency and economic benefits of stronger climate action. “Today, President Biden invited 40 world leaders to the Leaders Summit on Climate he will host on April 22 and 23. The virtual Leaders Summit will be live-streamed for public viewing,” it said. “The Summit will reconvene the U.S.-led Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, which brings together 17 countries responsible for approximately 80 percent of global emissions and global GDP. “The President also invited the heads of other countries that are demonstrating strong climate leadership, are especially vulnerable to climate impacts, or are charting innovative pathways to a net-zero economy. A small number of business and civil society leaders will also participate in the Summit.” Shortly after he took office in January, Biden announced he would convene the summit to galvanise efforts by major economies to tackle the climate crisis. This was after he took action to return the US to the Paris Agreement which Donald Trump, his predecessor, dumped after describing climate science as a hoax. On his part, Buhari has often expressed Nigeria’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Court Awards N210m Damages To Victims Of Police Brutality

A Federal High Court sitting in Bauchi has delivered a landmark judgement in favour of three victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killing in the state. The court was convinced that two of the victims – Ibrahim Babangida and Ibrahim Sama’Ila – were tortured to death by the police after being accused of stealing 24 chickens belonging to a retired police officer. In his ruling on Friday, the presiding judge, Justice Hassan Dikko, awarded the sum of N100 million each to the families of the deceased as compensation. The only surviving victim, 30-year-old Abdulwahab Bello, was also awarded N10 million compensation for the brutality, senseless arrest, and torture he suffered. The events that led to the judgement began with an allegation of chicken theft against the victims on July 21, 2020. Bello and his late friends were indicted in the crime, after which they were arrested and detained at the Township Division “A” Police Station in Bauchi. He recalled how one Superintendent Baba Ali, who was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the time, used a pestle to torture him and his two friends who died as a result of the brutality. “He hit Ibrahim continuously until his last breath,” the visibly moody survivour, who now limps, said. The action of the police was condemned by Bello and the families of his late friends who filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Bauchi. Joined as respondents were Ali, one Sergeant Jibrin Mohammed, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, the Inspector General of Police, and the Police Service Commission. Five months after the suit was filed, Justice Dikko delivered the final judgement and ruled that there was a clear case of extrajudicial killing. According to the judge, the action of the police amounts to the infringement of the victims’ fundamental human right to dignity. “Justice has been served and I am happy but for the children who lost their lives, I pray for the repose of their souls,” said Babangida Ibrahim, the father of one of the late victims. The mother of the other victim, Hajara Ismai’l, also said she had lost hope of getting justice and thanked the court for the judgement.

Don’t use Govt House to celebrate Tinubu’s birthday, Arewa youths warn Ganduje

Northern Youths under the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has cautioned Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State against using the Government House for the celebration of the birthday of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu. It described the plan as “an insult on the symbol of authority that the Government House has been to the Kano people for decades.” A statement signed by the AYCF national president, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, on Friday, took exception to the choice of the Kano State Government House as “the only place in the North” for celebrating Tinubu’s birthday, “a man who kept quiet while Northerners were under attack in Oyo State and some parts of the South West.” The group said: “While people from Ganduje’s Northern Nigeria were being maimed, Tinubu kept mute. Even when Northerners’ assets were being destroyed in some parts of the South West under the guise of hunting down imaginary herdsmen, he could not condemn the violence. Yet, this is shamelessly the special guest for Ganduje at the Kano Government House.” The AYCF argued that Kano is not only the financial nerve centre of the North but it is also “the symbol of the region’s cultural and historical pride up to today and we won’t fold our arms and watch this pillar of the North turned into a birthday party venue for people who are not officials of any government in the country.” It asked Governor Ganduje “not to allow himself to be used as the only governor in the North to avail a whole symbol of authority – the Government House – for a private citizen’s birthday party, something no Lagos State governor has ever done to even the most respected politicians or private individuals from the North. “Why can’t the governor of Lagos State, where Tinubu has a lot of influence, do so inside the Government House, Alausa? Has Governor Ganduje ever hosted Aminu Kano’s remembrance in the Government House? And if Governor Ganduje is so desperate about pleasing Tinubu, either as associate or political godfather, what stops him from using events centres and stadium in Kano Municipal that could be more conveniently used for such purposes? Why must it be Government House?” The group then declared: “We wish to advise Governor Ganduje to drop this primitive idea of hosting a private individual inside Kano Government House, or else we will apply all legitimate means of stopping this embarrassing wastage and denigration of the official abode of a governor for fun.

EndSARS Aftermath: Four Petitioners Get N16.25m Cheques At Lagos Panel

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for victims of SARS and other related matters has handed out cheques to four deserving petitioners. At the resumed sitting on Saturday, the panel gave decisions in six petitions and found that the four of them were able to prove their cases successfully. The petitioners, comprising three women and a man, received a total of N16.25 million in total. A breakdown of the amount shows that the three women received cheques of N10 million, N5 million, and N750,000 respectively, while the man got a cheque of N500,000. They took turns to receive the cheques from the Chairman of the Panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi. Following the presentation of the cheques to the petitioners, the panel moved on to the cross-examination of a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Babatunde Lawson, from Reddington Hospital. However, the cross-examination of the medical practitioner was stalled because the counsel to the Lagos State government who was meant to take him through the process was absent. Thereafter, the panel listened to the testimony of another petitioner, Samuel Ashola, who was at the venue of the Lekki tollgate protest in October 2020.

No serious politician will ignore opportunity of becoming President –Fayemi

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State says no serious politician will ignore the opportunity of becoming the President of Nigeria. Fayemi, who is also Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, said this on a Channel’s Televisions programme, ‘Hard Copy’, which was televised on Friday. Responding to a question laughingly, Fayemi, who has been endorsed for the Presidency by the Ekiti State House of Assembly said, “I am laughing. You know why? I get asked this question all the time. I don’t know any serious- minded politician who will have the opportunity to govern a country with the blessings that we have – in spite of the challenges – that will not give it a shot but we are not there yet.” The governor, who played a vital role in the dissolution of the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress, however, refused to state categorically if he would be contesting for the Presidency in 2023. Rather he said he was focused on completing his tenure in October 2022. “I am considering finishing well in Ekiti in 2022. I have a job. Frankly, I am eternally grateful to Ekiti people for giving me the opportunity to govern the state twice and I still have a lot to deliver on that agenda. “So, the future will take care of itself. I have no means of knowing what is going to happen but for me, the certainty is that I am the Governor of Ekiti State and that term expires in October 2022. That is the job I have for now,” Fayemi said. The NGF chairman faulted the decision of the Federal Government to invest $1.5bn in refurbishing the Port Harcourt refinery but said he did not have all the facts that could have led to the decision. He also said there was a need for the Federal Government to convince the organised labour and Nigerians at large to accept deregulation. Fayemi said, “I am not a member of the cabinet and I don’t know what informed that decision but clearly, I believe a level of analysis must have gone into it and the approval process must have taken into consideration the cost-benefit analysis of that decision. “I wouldn’t have taken that decision given the fact that we know that a big refinery, private sector -driven is coming on stream but I don’t have that decision that led to that decision at FEC. I wouldn’t have taken that decision.” Contributing to the debate on the use of hijab at missionary schools which led to a crisis in Kwara State, Fayemi said there was a need to play down religiosity in Nigeria. He said it may be a product of poverty and frustration. Fayemi also faulted calls for the division of the country, stating that the best way forward was devolution of powers from the centre to the federating units.
