We have capacity to crush you’ — Buhari warns bandits over Zamfara killings

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned bandits that his administration has the capacity to crush them. Buhari sounded the warning in the wake of the killings of residents of some Zamfara communities by bandits. TheCable had reported that more than 25 people were killed in attacks on Gobirawa, Rini, Gora, and Madoti Dankule in Bakura and Maradun LGAs in Zamfara — the death toll has since risen. The gunmen were said to have invaded the communities on motorcycles and shot sporadically, on Wednesday. Reacting to the development, Buhari said the “insane and persistent violence against innocent people must stop”, adding that “such wanton disregard for life will be brought to an end sooner than later”. “These criminals should stop pushing their luck too far by believing that the government lacks the capacity to crush them,” the president was quoted to have said in a statement by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, on Thursday. “The violence against poor villagers who are struggling with poverty and other severe economic challenges is not going to be tolerated by this administration.” The president directed security agencies to close all existing gaps in their operations while expressing hope that the special operation launched by security agencies will prove decisive in ridding the state of the “frequent and horrifying” bandit activities. “Let’s not give these criminals any opportunity to succeed by taking the war to their own camps and stop them in their tracks before they even have the time to respond under our massive fire power,” the president added. Buhari reassured residents of the state of his administration’s determination to defeat the enemies, despite the latest setback.

Remove roads blocks, NUF tells Police, Military

The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), has condemned the killings of security operatives in the South East particularly in Anambra State,Imo and other parts of the South East. The forum in a statement by the its president Dede Uzor A Uzor in which it described the killings of security personnel in the State as “attrocious and despicable” lamented that the victims were mostly Ndigbo. We want FG to compasate all those IPOB and MASSOB Igbo Youths killed since the year 2000 till date with N10 million each and this will curtail the ongoing attacks against security officers in the South East. If Fulani herdsmen could be compasated then why not these Igbo youths? NUF said: “wasting of innocent blood negate Igbo tradition and infringes on the fundamental rights of the victims” But the group said the killing was not enough reason for the military to set up road blocks that cause traffic gridlock especially at Owerri Road, Uga Junction, Iyiowa Odekpe among other places in Anambra State. They decried the alleged shut down of a Federal Highway, Owerri Road in Anambra State where owners of about 30 traders shops were asked to vacate, lamenting that many have lost lots of money in the process amounting to several millions of naira. NUF called on the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), whose men were inolved in this man’s inhumanity to man’s incident to immediately remove and dismantle the road blocks. The Forum said they should rather provide scientific and technological ways of security, instead of the current analogue system of protecting themselves with road blocks. They said CCTV should be provided to capture the activities going on around where they are now providing security as well as provide data base and intelligence and discreet investigations for the entire country. NUF also called on CNS to direct his officers and men to allow traders whose shops were shut down to reopen them so that they can feed their families. The group equally called for the immediate engagement of the youths to keep these hoodlums busy economically, arguing that since the Federal Government is engaging bandits, they should also extend it hand of fellowship to gunmen in the South East and South. The said gunmen are humans which can be approached. There’s anger in the land and the only solution is to engagement and diplomatic approach not use of force as has witnessed by the Federal Government,NUF advised.

Alleged link to terror groups: We stand by Pantami, says Presidency

The Presidency on Thursday conceded that the views expressed by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, endorsing some terror groups in the past are unacceptable, but says it stands resolutely by him because of his work for Nigerians. The Presidency’s position was contained in a statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity) where it blamed the minister’s travails on the opposition and some unnamed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies. It pointed out that the minister had righty apologised for the statements he made years ago, which he cannot now repeat. “The administration stands by Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services,” the statement said. The Presidency noted what it said was an unfortunate fashion in public discourse that makes leaders in politics, religion and civil society liable in the present for every statement they have ever made in the past–no matter how long ago, and even after they have later rejected them. The statement added: “This insidious phenomenon seeks to cancel the careers of others on the basis of a thing they have said, regardless of when they said it. “The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, is, currently, subject to a ‘cancel campaign’ instigated by those who seek his removal. “They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to “cancel” him. But they will profit should he be stopped from making decisions that improve the lives of everyday Nigerians. “The Minister has, rightly, apologised for what he said in the early 2000s. The views were absolutely unacceptable then and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them – for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong. “In the 2000s, the minister was a man in his twenties; next year, he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions – often rightly – change. “But all discerning Nigerians know this manufactured dispute is nothing to do with the Minister’s prior words, but solely concern his actions in the present.” The Presidency alleged that Pantami made enemies because he tried to put Nigeria first. The statement added: “This administration is committed to improving the lives of all Nigerians – and that includes ensuring they are not over-charged or under-protected for those services on which modern life depends.”

Attempted jail break foiled in Kano prison facility

An attempt by some inmates to foment trouble and escape from the Kano Central Prison, Kurmawa in Kano State was on Thursday evening foiled. It was gathered that the incident occurred when the inmates “condemned inmates” numbering about 150 staged a protest that officials should allow them to consume illicit drugs (wee-wee) and use other item such as handset smuggled into the facility by yet to be identified persons. Other source have it that the inmates were protesting the poor quality of food they were served for iftar (Muslim breaking of fast), despite a befitting arrangement put in place by a popular philantropist. Confirming the development to Vanguard, the Public Relations Officer, Kano State Correctional Center, DSC Musbahu Lawal Kofar Nasarawa said the mayhem was not as a result of the food but the inmates want officials to allow them to consume illicit drugs (wee-wee) and handset smuggled into the facility by yet to be identified persons. Musbahu said the Command’s Controller, Suleiman T. Suleiman has set up a committee to investigate how the illicit items (wee-wee and handset) were smuggled into the facility. According to him, “was it through the food they bring into the facility that the items were smuggled into the facility or how? So the Committee were to investigate who and how. Whether it’s those who bring in food or the staffs who smuggle in the illicit items. “So they stage a protest that the items be returned to them which is violates the law. “But as we speak, normalcy has since returned back in the facility,” Musbahu stated. Meanwhile, it was gathered that it took the intervention of security personnel to foil the jail break and restore normalcy in the facility.

NEC refutes Obaseki’s claim, says no money was printed to support March allocation

The National Economic Council (NEC) says the federal government did not print money to support allocation to states in March. Laolu Akande, spokesman to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, in a statement, said the council affirmed this position at its meeting on Thursday. Godwin Obaseki, Edo state governor, had raised allegation that the federal government printed N60 billion in March to support allocation for states. The governor had insisted that Nigeria is in deep financial trouble, despite rebuttals from the ministry of finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). According to the statement, NEC received presentations from Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, and Kayode Fayemi, chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), during the meeting. The council affirmed that “there was no printing of N60 billion or any other amount whatsoever to shore up allocation for the month of March.” The statement said both Ahmed and Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor, informed the council that “the allegation of the printing of money to augment allocation was out rightly false.” On the issue of security, the spokesman said the council unanimously affirmed the unity of Nigeria and said it would adopt the report of the national townhall meeting on national unity and security held recently in Kaduna. He said the council welcomed the outcome of the townhall meeting, while urging states to hold wider consultations across the country and report back to NEC the outcome of the meetings. Akande added that a national consensus would be reached on the recommendations including the adoption of state police, among other matters. Present at the NEC meeting presided over by Osinbajo were state governors and ministers of FCT, finance, transport, information, aviation, water resources, and state for budget and national planning.

I’ll Depose You If Insecurity Persists, Uzodimma Tells Imo Monarchs

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has threatened to depose any traditional ruler who allows brigandage to flourish in their community. “The Imo State government has resolved to depose any traditional ruler who fails to do something while insecurity reigns supreme in his community,” he said at a security stakeholders meeting in Owerri on Thursday, 22 April 2021 He said traditional rulers must begin to take responsibility for the things that happen their communities. The meeting had in attendance the newly deployed Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Umuahia, Ekim Okon. The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Placid Njoku, also called on the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Students’ Union Government and market unions to join his administration in securing the state. “Insecurity is one thing Uzodinma takes seriously since he came to government. There is no alternative to security. The issue of security is very central to this government. We must ensure that Imo State is secured,” he said. “To interact among ourselves and assign responsibilities to ourselves is the main focus of this meeting. We must call ourselves to order. If you are a traditional ruler, what is your role in regards to security? If you are Chairman of CAN, what is your role as regards to security? “These people who are cultists, rapists, drug addicts and all of them live in your communities, our traditional rulers. What must a traditional ruler do in securing his community? A traditional ruler must have a system to check insecurity. Who goes out and who comes in, in his community should be his priority. If every traditional ruler does his job well this insecurity will abate.”

Don’t Link Yakowa’s Death To Pantami, Muslims – Kaduna CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State has urged Nigerians to ignore any insinuation linking the embattled Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami and the Muslim community to the death of Sir. Patrick Yakowa, the former Governor of Kaduna State who died in a helicopter crash on December 15, 2012. CAN in a statement issued by its Chairman, Rev. John Joseph Hayab said linking Pantami and the Muslim community to the death of Yakowa would endanger national peace and urged security agents to step in and tame the circulation of a documents he said had “doubtful authenticity.” Daily Trust reports the circulation of a purported document on social media had insinuated that a meeting of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) in Bauchi and chaired by Pantami had strategiesed the killing of the first Christian governor of Kaduna State. However, countering the circulation of the document, the CAN Chairman in Kaduna said: “If we support unverified allegations against someone today because we loathe the person, the monster could be deployed against us or someone we cherish tomorrow.” “We cannot afford to stock fire when we should be pouring more water. Those who feel they have information to help the security agencies investigate whatever crimes against groups or individuals should do so within the provided window, without exacerbating the tension of formulating tales in the public space,” he said. Hayab, who served as Yakowa’s Special Adviser on Religious Affairs clarified that when Yakowa died, there was no inquiry to determine the cause of death, aside from the immediate and likely technical fault leading to the helicopter crash. “We, the Christian community and indeed his immediate family acknowledged the tragedy, submitting to the will of God Almighty. For that purpose, there is no point, now or later, to open up what will not bring back our leader and father but rather open up old wounds in a very controversial manner,” he said. He described as unfortunate that grievous revelations against the Minister, had turned into a dangerous turn of events, “especially the issue linked with the release of some documents with doubtful authenticity linking the minister, Pantami and the Muslim community with the death of His Excellency, Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa.” He said while the church and Yakowa’s family consider the allegation very serious with a possible adverse impact on peace and national security, it also expresses strong reservations and concerns about statements like the ones associated in the past by Pantami as circulated in audios and videos released on social media. According to the CAN Chairman, society’s discomforts and disagreements should however, not be enough reasons for Nigerians to approve the circulation of “phony and injurious statements” against any perceived foe adding: “We consider that the communique could be doctored. We are aware that in this age of technological advancements, we have to take any allegations with a pinch of salt until we are confident of the authenticity of the source.” “Sensitive documents like the ones purported to be from the JNI meeting in Bauchi should be subjected to thorough security investigation and trials, not tools for social media warfare. The danger of making this a media issue, instead of a legal and security issue that it ought to be, is that we stand to lose the most important point; that of bringing to justice persons accused to have wronged the law. “Accordingly, there is a need for circumspection and care so that we do not throw our communities into further chaos in the rush to hang one man. At a time of strained relationships between neighbours, what we need are mediatory interventions and peacebuilding, rather than adding fuel to the raging fire,” he said. Hayab stated that those with an axe to grind with Pantami should do so within their limits but stated that as a Church leader, he has chosen to speak because of his deep belief that justice is natural and everyone shall live to account before our Lord. “Besides, if we support unverified allegations against someone today because we loathe the person, the monster could be deployed against us or someone we cherish tomorrow,” he said.

Military Camp In Niger Shut Down As Bandits Abduct 15 In Fresh Attack

The army has shut down a military camp in Zagzaga community in Munya council area of Niger after another attack by bandits. It has also launched a search operation with the support of the community youths for one missing soldier in the wake of the attack. It came after bandits estimated to number up to 60 invaded the camp early Wednesday and engaged soldiers in a gun battle. The bandits suffered heavy casualties, but no soldier was wounded in the attack, except the missing one. The soldiers moved out of the community in what the secretary to the state government, Ibrahim Matene, called a “tactical withdrawal”. Hours after the soldiers moved out, bandits launched coordinated attacks on communities in the area, a source within the community tells Daily Trust. Some 15 people were reportedly abducted in the night attacks, forcing residents to flee to neighbouring villages. Communities affected in the fresh attacks Wednesday night are Zagzaga, Zhani, Guni and Maraban Daudu. The villagers are reportedly to have all relocated from these communities, leaving only the youths and some men behind. The source said the 15 people were abducted from Boddo village in the early hours of Thursday during the invasion. When contacted on the latest incident, the Secretary to the State Government said the military camp was being closed temporarily for tactical reasons, stressing that the military has being stationed in the community for the past five years due to the notorious nature of the area. He disclosed that Zagzaga community and other surrounding villages have remained entry and exit routes for the bandits before the soldiers were brought and stationed there, adding that the people have enjoyed a steady peace for the past five years that the military were there.

DSS, Police Should Invite People Who Make Unsubstantiated Claims On Social Media – Umahi

Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigeria Police to invite Nigerians who make ‘unsubstantiated statements’ on social media to explain reasons for their comments. The governor who made this comment during an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily said this is important to prevent an increase in crime. “The level of crimes in the country is as a result of unpatriotic acts of a lot of us. We, leaders, we come out on television and then we speak, indict other regions, we speak against other regions, we pick on the leader of the country and then castigate the leader of the country. There is no patriotism at all. “The way to prevent this thing is that if you are making unsubstantiated statements in the social media, the police, the SSS, you should be invited to explain and this is no politics because the country cannot fold our hands and allow people to plunge the country into another war. This is very important,” Umahi said. The All Progressives Congress (APC) governor noted that these unpatriotic comments are capable of inciting division and might eventually plunge the country into a crisis or lead to war. “I was told that one of the world wars started with a family quarrel and so if you are making a statement on social media calling it freedom of speech, you must come to the law to substantiate it. “What I have in the (Ebonyi) State, the communal clash now should have stopped but for the politicians who are making unguarded accusations and statements in the social media and then people outside the state will just cash on that and emotions will arise and the problem will continue.” Umahi’s reaction comes a week after the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed said Twitter chose Ghana as the headquarters for its African operations, due to unpatriotic comments of Nigerians who demarket Nigeria. Mr Mohammed said the tech giants chose Accra, Ghana over Nigeria because the nation’s West African neighbours are champions of democracy and abide by the rule of law. “The reasons cited by Twitter for citing the headquarters in Accra, Ghana is that Accra is a champion of democracy and there is rule of law in the country, among other reasons. This is what you get when you de-market your country,” the Minister stated.
