Money printing saga: PDP asks Buhari to sack finance minister

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, and replace her with a better hand. The main opposition party accused the minister of “attempting to mislead Nigerians” over allegations that the federal government printed N60 billion to support states’ allocations in March. Godwin Obaseki, Edo state governor, had made the allegation last week when he spoke at a forum where he argued that Nigeria is in huge financial trouble. “When we got FAAC for March, the federal government printed additional N50-N60 billion to top-up for us to share,” he had said. While Ahmed had described the claim as false, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), had said the money was meant as loan from the apex bank. “If you understand the concept of printing of money, it is about lending money. There is no need for all the controversy around money printing as if we are going into the factory to print naira and then distribute on the streets,” Emefiele had said. However, in a statement on Friday, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesman, accused the federal government of not being sincere about the matter. Ologbondiyan also asked Buhari to reveal how much the government has so far printed in similar circumstances, citing such action as a major drive for inflation in the country. “The PDP asserts that the admission by CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, that the apex bank has been printing money at the bidding of government, has vindicated its earlier stand that the Buhari-led APC administration is characterized by concealments, deceit and falsehood,” the r statement read. “The PDP flays the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, for attempting to mislead Nigerians by denying the revelations by the Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, that N60 billion was printed in March to support federal allocation to states. “A situation where the Federal Government cannot articulate and implement policies favourable to wealth creation but resorting to borrowing and indiscriminate printing of currency notes, only goes to further confirm that the Buhari administration lacks the credibility and capacity to run a nation. “The PDP calls out President Muhammadu Buhari to come clean on the amount that has been printed so far by the CBN to finance the deficit caused by the financial mismanagement of his government as well as what the funds had been used for. “Furthermore, for failing the full disclosure test, the PDP demands that the Minister of Finance should immediately be relieved of her position, while the President accepts responsibility for the indiscriminate printing of currency in our naira.”

Zamfara governor Bello Matawalle has suspended the district head of Badarawa in Shinkafi emirate, Surajo Namakkah, for conferring a title on a military officer arrested for selling ammunition to bandits. He said the state would not tolerate anything capable of destroying the hard-earned peace of Zamfara. The indefinite suspension was announced on Friday by Yusuf Idris, director-general of media to the state government. The governor pledged to ensure that anybody found wanting in anyway will be dealt with accordingly. Matawalle warned that henceforth traditional rulers must seek approval before conferring traditional titles, to avoid unnecessary embarrassment to government and the traditional institution. According to the governor, the military officer was recently arrested in possession of 20 rounds of 62mm live ammunition. The suspect was said to be at the point of handing over the ammunition to one Kabiru Bashiru of Maniya village, Shinkafi Emirate, and had allegedly collected an advance payment of N100,000 from bandits. The governor commended security agencies for arresting one Dr Kamarawa who was in possession of four sets of military camouflage and army identification card. He said that Kamarawa specialised in the supply of army uniforms and medicaments to bandits in Zamfara. Matawalle expressed sadness over the involvement of some irresponsible security personnel in banditry, saying it would sabotage ongoing operations and make it impossible to end banditry in the country. “The nation will not defeat the criminals with such bad eggs within the security architecture,” he added. Ortom: Nigeria lacks courageous leaders who can tell FG the truth

Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state, says Nigeria lacks courageous leaders who can tell the federal government the truth. Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at a lecture organised by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) as part of its 2021 press week, Ortom said the country does not have sustainable leadership that can save the nation. He said the spate of kidnappings of citizens across the country is a dangerous trend. “I have learnt from my experience that Nigeria has critical deficit of sustainable leadership. We seem to have a dearth of bold and courageous leaders who will clearly identify with what is good, and loudly tell the nation,” Ortom said. “We have a lot of lily-livered people who masquerade as national and regional leaders in this country but are afraid to speak and advise the federal government correctly. “Many leaders have confided in me that our position on ranching of livestock and rule of law to ensure justice, fairness and equity are good, not only for Benue state but for Nigeria as a whole. But they cannot speak publicly to support it. “Where then are our elder statesmen and women? Where are our political leaders who will speak out loudly instead of whispering in closets on crucial and critical national issues, including an existential challenge such as the herdsmen sack and pogrom of entire villages and communities in Benue State and other parts of the country? “Herdsmen attacks on farmers will only end when open grazing is completely eliminated. Many countries in the world including those in Africa have embraced ranching.” The governor added that there is an allegation that the current insecurity was caused by desperate politicians who brought into the country foreign mercenaries to help them win elections.

Seven security operatives arrested for ‘supplying’ arms, military kits to bandits in Zamfara

The Zamfara police command has arrested seven security operatives for allegedly supplying arms, ammunition, and military kits to bandits in the state. Ibrahim Dosara, Zamfara commissioner for information, who disclosed this at a media briefing on Thursday, said the suspects were arrested in various communities across the state. Items recovered from the suspects include military bulletproof vests, jungle boots, shin guards, identity card, camouflage uniforms, among others. “I wish to inform you that the state government has just received a report from the police on the arrest of seven security agents involved in aiding and abetting banditry activities across the state,” he said. “The suspects, who have already been interrogated and confessed to their respective crimes, have since the commencement of the military operations in the state in recent past, been sabotaging the operations by sharing military intelligence, supplying arms and ammunition, military uniforms and other facilities to the armed bandits to prevent our gallant soldiers from conquering the bandits. “This is why it took the Nigerian military and other security agencies fighting the bandits that long to defeat them. The suspects have already been handed over to their appropriate security authorities for further necessary actions. “We feel obliged not to disclose their identities, as the security authorities concerned are acting on the matter.” He, however, urged the federal government to come through on the promise to deploy additional security forces to the state. “Zamfara state government is appealing to the president and commander-in-chief of the Nigeria armed forces to redeem his pledge on the deployment of 6,000 troops to the state to clear the recalcitrant bandits terrorising various communities of our dear state,” Dosara said. “The state government also wants to urge the military authorities to embark on active supervision and monitoring of the military operations to ensure synergy and effectiveness.” The development comes weeks after an officer of the Nigerian army was arrested for supplying ammunition and uniforms to bandits in Zamfara.
