Expect Continuity, Buhari Tells Nigerians On Return From London

President Muhammadu Buhari has told Nigerians to expect continuity from his government after he returned from a medical trip to London, the United Kingdom. The Nigerian leader, 78, spoke with the press when he arrived in the country via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday afternoon. “Continuity,” Buhari said when asked what Nigerians should expect from his administration. He did not, however, specify any area. Buhari’s two-week medical vacation in London had generated controversy in the country. Critics and members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) voiced their concerns over the president’s frequent trips to the United Kingdom. “It is indeed worrisome that under President Buhari, even the hitherto highly rated State House Clinic, has become so moribund that it cannot provide a simple medical checkup service for Mr. President,” the PDP said in a statement in which it also accused the Buhari government of wasting taxpayers’ money.

Emefiele to Obaseki: Stop the mischief — it’s loans you’re calling printing money

Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says the claim by Godwin Obaseki, Edo state governor, that the federal government printed N60 billion in March to support allocation for states is simply lending by the apex bank. Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning, had dismissed the claim by Obaseki as false. However, Obaseki stood by his position asking the federal government to end the current monetary rascality and stop playing the ostrich. Speaking with journalists on Thursday, Emefiele described Obaseki’s claim as a political ploy that is “unfortunate and totally inappropriate”. According to him, the federal government had disbursed loans to states to manage the economic difficulties occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic. “If you understand the concept of printing of money, it is about lending money. There is no need for all the controversy around money printing as if we are going into the factory to print naira and then distribute on the streets,” he said. “It is very inappropriate for people to just give some coloration to the word ‘printing of money’ as if it is a foreign word coming from the sky. “In 2015/2016, we were in a similar [fiscal] situation, but it is far worse today. We provided budget support facility to all the states of the country and that loan remains unpaid till now. We are going to insist on the states paying the loan back since they are effectively accusing us of giving them loans. “Most countries of the world today are confronted by not just the health crisis from the COVID pandemic but also economic crisis. I keep saying this: it would be irresponsible of the central bank of Nigeria or any central bank to stand idle and refuse to support its government at this time. Whatever we do in Nigeria is being done in any clime. “Nigeria is unfortunately in a very bad situation and we cannot pretend about it in the sense that we are facing problems about productivity output which is gross domestic product (GDP). We are working very hard to see how we can get our heads above water. We are also concerned with issues of inflation. “For us to see some people playing some games, overheating his polity talking about printing of money, I think it is unfortunate and totally inappropriate. I would like to advise that this should stop. We should all work for the growth of our country and not play politics.”

On the performance of the new service chiefs so far, the President said: “Oh yes, they have been in the system all the way, they know what is wrong, they know what is right and I think they are doing their best. I hope their best will be good enough for Nigeria.” Also fielding questions on his expectations from the new IGP he appointed while in London, Buhari said: “Well, we went through the system, there was a committee by the Minister of Police Affairs. “They gave me some names and he happened to be the one chosen. He knows his job, he has been in it for a long time, he went through all the training, he has the necessary experience. So, we have a high expectation from him.” On what Nigerians should expect from his administration going forward, after his rest in London, the President said, “continuity.” Asked how he felt after the medical checkup in London, he simply said: “Yes, it went very well, after your good wishes.” The presidential aircraft conveying him and some presidential aides landed at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at about 4.45 p.m President Buhari had on March 30, departed Abuja for London, United Kingdom, for a routine medical check-up. Catholic Priest dumps priesthood after falling in love

An Italian priest gave up on denying himself the feeling of having a partner in his life and the perks that come with it when he confessed in the middle of mass that he was hanging his cassock because he had fallen in love with a woman. Don Riccardo Ceccobelli’s revelation took place in a homily held in the city of Todi, in the Perugia province, located in the centre of the country. In the midst of his preaching, the parishioners of the Massa Martana church learned of the 41-year-old priest’s biggest secret. Ceccobelli said he would give up the habit to live love in freedom. “I am in love and I want to live this love without sublimating it or taking it away,” he said. “My heart fell in love, I have never betrayed the promises I made, but I want to try to live this love. I cannot be coherent, transparent and correct with the Church as I have been until now.” The priest in an interview with the Italian media confessed his love for Laura, a 26-year-old nurse who is also a catechist. Bishop Gualtiero Sigismondi who was among the audience thanked him for his transparency. “I thank Don Riccardo for all the service provided so far. And first of all, I send you my sincere wishes so that this decision, taken in full freedom as he himself told me, guarantees peace and serenity.” On how he fell in love with Laura, Ceccobelli said, “We have known each other for 4 years because I was the pastor of Massa Martana for six years and we met in the parish. But it was since September that something in me changed forever. I started to feel an emotion inside of me, but at first, I did everything I could to keep the situation under control, I swear to you, I was hoping that she would find a boyfriend, but with each passing day, I felt sicker and sicker. One night I urgently needed to call her on the phone. I couldn’t sleep if I didn’t hear her voice. When she answered me, I said, ‘Hello, hello, it’s me’, and immediately I felt well-being and peace within me. I fell asleep. On January 1, I submitted my resignation to the parish.” Procedures for the resignation of the priest has already begun.

IPOB dismisses allegation of financial institution attack in South-East

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed the alleged plans by its security outfit, Eastern Security Network (ESN), to attack banks and other financial institutions in the South-East zone of Nigeria for the purpose of acquiring money to purchase arms as false information. The group described the information as propaganda by the security agencies to blackmail and dent the global reputation of the security network. The group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, in a statement, said IPOB assured financial institutions in the zone of their safety, just as it warned the security agencies to desist from spreading such propaganda. The statement reads: “We the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great and indomitable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to put banks in Biafra land on notice of a wicked plot by the Nigeria security agencies to harm them. “Our intelligence unit has uncovered fabricated propaganda by the Department of State Services DSS, that Eastern Security Network,(ESN) is planning to attack banks in Biafra land to acquire money to purchase arms. “DSS is propelling this wicked propaganda all in a bid to blackmail ESN and IPOB and dent our global reputation. We, therefore, wish to debunk this falsehood and blatant lie from the pit of hell. “IPOB and ESN are not criminals and we have no plans or agenda to touch any institution particularly banks. We are not looking for money to buy arms because we produce our arms locally and cannot attack or kidnap anybody for ransom. “We don’t inflict pains on the people we are fighting for their freedom. DSS must stop this rubbish and engage their time on something more meaningful. This poor script cannot fly. “IPOB and ESN are very disciplined groups, and we cannot indulge in armed robbery against any individual or group. ESN has never left its mandate which is to defend Biafra land against Fulani terrorists and killer herdsmen. “All banks in Biafraland must be wary of DSS because it is possible they are planning to sponsor attacks on banks and turn around, as usual, to blame it on IPOB and ESN operatives. “The double-faced Nigerian security agencies have been staging this kind of attacks in so many places and later point accusing fingers at IPOB and ESN. “They have tried to blame the attacks on security formations in South East on us but now it is obvious that we are innocent of that, they have quickly changed tact in their desperation to blackmail us and find a cheap excuse to declare another special military operation in the zone. Our people should be smart and not buy into their tricks. “We are waiting for any group of armed robbers who would attempt to attack any bank in Biafraland an attempt to tarnish the reputation of IPOB and ESN. Such band of criminals and their sponsors will regret their action. “We assure every resident and institution including banks in Biafra land of their safety. We will help resist these criminals the DSS is arranging to attack banks in the name of ESN and IPOB.”
