Okorocha: Uzodimma Commissioning Roads I Built 10 Years Ago

Former Imo governor Rochas Okorocha has accused Governor Hope Uzodimma of deceiving Imolites by commissioning road projects he built 10 years ago. Okorocha, now the senator representing Imo West, was governor of Imo between 2011 and 2019. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had commissioned the Dick Tiger road, on MCC road, while the Akachi road where the famous Akachi Towers and controversial Palm Springs Royal Hotel and Apartments are, was commissioned by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, on Friday. Speaking through Sam Onwuemeodo, his media aide, Okorocha said, “The Akachi road, which Governor Uzodimma is commissioning today, was constructed by Okorocha, the moment he came in as governor in 2011. “The place where the Akachi Road was constructed, was a thick forest. Okorocha constructed the road, it was completed and commissioned. “The opening of the place also brought about the Akachi Estate and the Akachi Tower. The Akachi road had eased traffic along Douglas road for those going to lmo Airport. With Akachi road, those going to lmo Airport could get there in 25 minutes.” But Uzodimma, speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media (Print), Modestus Nwamkpa, said that he’s focused and would refuse to be distracted. He said that it’s Imo that would judge between him and Okorocha who is delivering democracy dividends. He said, “You were here during the Okorocha days, go and look at the quality of the roads and the ones we are commissioning and see the difference.”

Northern coalition backs dialogue with Boko Haram, says ‘we’ve sunk lower’ under Buhari

A coalition of northern groups has tackled President Muhammadu Buhari over the “bad governance” and worsening security challenges the country is facing in his administration. Arising from the ‘Northern peoples summit’ convened at Arewa House in Kaduna state, the coalition said northerners have “sunk lower in all indices of human existence” under the watch of the president and other leaders. It further asked the federal government to dialogue with bandits and Boko Haram insurgents, adding that such is needed for peace to reign in the north. The coalition which consists of 17 groups including the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) made their resolutions known via a communique issued at the end of the summit on Friday. They knocked northern leaders over what they described as the “hopelessness” being faced by residents in the region. “The North invites the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, Northern Governors and legislators to the fact that under their watch the North has sunk lower in all indices of human existence,” the communique stated. “Delegates at the Summit commit to continuously engage in searching for solutions, as well as raising their voices against poor governance, corruption and absence of commitment to deal with insecurity, poverty and hopelessness among Northerners. Government should show effective presence in all ungoverned spaces in the North.” The communique, which was read by Doknan Sheni, chairman of the drafting committee, also supported calls for restructuring, in what is perhaps the first time in years that prominent northern leaders are uniting to support Nigeria’s return to true federalism. “The North believes that restructuring the country is now a vital necessity for survival as one united entity. The North will not be stampeded or blackmailed into taking major decisions around rotating the Presidency,” the coalition said. “For Nigeria to survive, all parts of the country must equally commit to supporting its continuation as one entity, without equivocation or subterfuge. The North extends an invitation to groups that are genuinely interested in discussing the future of the country. “The North believes that every interest can be accommodated in one united, just and equitable nation, but the North cannot be the sole custodian of this endeavour.” NO TO SECESSION, YES TO NEGOTIATION WITH BANDITS, BOKO HARAM The groups also distanced itself from calls for Nigeria’s breakup, saying that all parts of the country “must equally commit to supporting its continuation as one entity, without equivocation or subterfuge.” “The North extends an invitation to groups that are genuinely interested in discussing the future of the country. The North believes that every interest can be accommodated in one united, just and equitable nation, but the North cannot be the sole custodian of this endeavour,” they said. “The North resolves that there should be government-backed negotiations and dialogue with the bandits, Boko Haram and affected communities for effective peace in the North.” They also warned against the “continuation of demonisation, attacks and killings of Northerners” in southern parts of the country, asking the authorities to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the suspects involved.

Security operatives at the Kogi State Polytechnic have arrested one Shehu Mohammed for being in possession of a locally fabricated revolver pistol. Mohammed is a National Diploma II student of the Department of Public Administration of the institution, with matriculation number 2018/ND/PAD/170. In addition to the illegal possession of the pistol, he was apprehended with five rounds of live ammunition while making his way through the main entrance of the school on Friday. The student, who was coming to the campus purportedly to write his ND II final examination, was accosted by a ‘stop and search’ officer who asked him to hand over his belongings. He, however, took to his heels when he realised he would be caught with the live ammunition and has since been handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further interrogation and investigation. In his reaction, the rector of the polytechnic, Dr Salisu Usman, assured members of staff and students of the school that no stone would be left unturned in restoring sanity to the campus. He also commended the security unit of the institution for a job well done and appealed to members of the polytechnic community to always be on the side of the law. Mohammed’s arrest followed the ban on end-of-examination celebrations by the school authorities in view of an intelligence report that suspected cultists planned to storm the campus with arms for reprisal after their colleague was killed following the examination in 2019. This made the management of the school beef up security on the campus, including daily routine check at the polytechnic entrance and the premises. On Thursday, the security operatives of the institution impounded a tricycle alleged to be used as a decoy for hiding arms and releasing gunshots outside the school gate. Similarly, they arrested a non-student suspected to be hired machinery with a charm-made local bulletproof on Wednesday. The suspect who has since been handed over to the law enforcement agency claimed he came to the campus to celebrate with his sister after completing her examination.

He gave the order on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Transportation annual ministerial press briefing in Abuja. He said all passengers must show their means of identification which must match their train tickets before boarding.
