Gunmen attack another police station in Imo, Kidnap one, Injured two

One officer has not been seen after gunmen attacked a police station located at Mbieri divisional police headquarters in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo state. According to The PUNCH, the attack occurred in the wee hours of Thursday. Orlando Ikeokwu, spokesman of the police command in Imo, was quoted as saying two other police officers sustained injuries while putting up a resistance to the attack. Ikeokwu said some suspects held in the police station were set free by the gunmen. The incident is coming after attacks on the prison and police command headquarters in Owerri, Imo state capital, on Monday. Over 1,500 prisoners were reportedly freed in the attacks allegedly carried out by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Hope Uzodinma, Imo governor, described the developments as an attack “on integrity of government”. Uzodinma asked police officers to defend themselves “if you can’t attack them”. “Any attack on police formation is an insult to us as a government. We must take charge, take control and ensure discipline,” he said. “We must not condone attacks by criminals on government. Police must not be compromised so that the integrity of government will remain intact. “This unfortunate tragedy can only be condemned by every reasonable mind, the intention was to put fear into our people and make them vulnerable.”

DSS denies torturing Buhari’s driver to death

The Department of State Services has denied torturing Sai’du Afaka, the President’s official driver, to death It described a report by an online news medium, Saharareporters, that it tortured the deceased as misleading. The news site had reported that Afaka misled the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) into approving a multi-million naira contract which was later discovered by the DSS. It further said the service arrested Afaka, tortured and subsequently dumped him at the State House Clinic where he died. But the DSS spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya, in a statement on Wednesday night, titled, ‘President’s official driver not detained or tortured by DSS,’ said the secret police did not engage in torturing of suspects and asked the public to “disregard the fake news spewed by the online platform.” It stated, “While the said driver was never arrested or detained by the Service, it is a known fact that it does not torture suspects. Its suspect handling method is usually in compliance with the tenets of criminal justice administration system and democracy.” The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, had on Tuesday, announced that Afaka died “after a prolonged illness.” He also expressed the condolences of the President to his family.

SHOCKING: Family sets Imo fleeing inmate ablaze

An atmosphere of confusion engulfed Umuawom village in Iho-Dueze autonomous community in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday after a fleeing inmate was set ablaze. The victim was one of the 1,884 inmates who fled after gunmen attacked Owerri Correctional Centre on Monday. He had accused the family of being responsible for his years of incarceration and wanted to get his pound of flesh. A village source said “The guy came back from the prison after the jailbreak, dropped his bag and headed straight to the family that he had problem with, which he said landed him in prison. “On sighting the prison escapee, the family became charged. The guy told the family members that he had come home and was ready to deal with them. Altercation ensued and he was set ablaze.” When contacted for comments, the police spokesman in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said he had yet to be briefed officially on the matter. PUNCH

Ango Abdullahi: Like Niger Delta militants, repentant bandits should be rehabilitated

Ango Abdullahi, chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), says bandits willing to repent should be offered options for rehabilitation. Many communities in the north have suffered attacks from bandits over the past months. While making a presentation at the northern people’s summit in Kaduna on Wednesday, Abdullahi said the government should only go after those who do not want to desist from crime. He also suggested that the government resolves the crisis involving bandits, like it did with Niger Delta militants who were offered amnesty. “Those elements that show a genuine willingness to abandon criminality should be rehabilitated and integrated. Those who insist on pursuing criminality should be stoutly resisted by the Nigerian state and by communities,” he said. “Those who attack and kill northerners must be stopped and be prosecuted. “The entire phenomenon of armed criminality requires bold steps and policies to deal with it, and we should examine these and make our recommendations to those with responsibility to implement them. “Even at this stage, however, I have to say that dealing with criminality, poverty, and destitution in the north will require a national effort to mitigate. “The nation needs to prepare to consider massive investment in human capital development, infrastructure, and basic security if it will reverse the rising tide of frustrations, destitution and criminality which afflicts most of the north. “Those who see this as an unnecessary concession to the region need to be reminded that this was precisely the approach that substantially resolved the Niger Delta militancy. “The north needs not make this demand in hushed tones, or apologise for them.” He said banditry, insurgency, cultism, piracy and irredentism are threats to the nation, and they must be treated with a mindset that appreciates their roots, complexities and solutions in a national context. He called on federal and northern state governments to design and implement plans for the domestication of herders, and also promote policies to improve the quality of life of Fulani herder communities. He said the Nigerian state “must come to terms with the reality that its legitimate monopoly over the use of violence has been severely damaged, and it cannot build straw fences around communities to give them a false sense of security”. Abdullahi added that it’s time to re-evaluate the current security arrangements and address limitations which encourage criminality. The NEF chairman joins the list of leaders, including ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and Ahmad Gumi, prominent Islamic cleric, who have also called on the government to rehabilitate repentant bandits.

House bill to permit wearing of hijab in military

A bill pending before the House of Representatives is seeking to compel the Armed Forces and para-military organisations to permit female officers to wear Islamic veil, commonly known as hijab. The bill, known as the Religious Discrimination (Prohibition, Prevention) Bill, 2020, which has passed second reading at the House, was sponsored by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Member representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency, Saidu Abdullahi. Article 13 of the bill titled, ‘Discrimination in employment in security and other sectors,’ prohibits the military from discriminating against anyone wearing a hijab. Article 13(2) reads, “Any person employed in the security sector, whether within the military or paramilitary or otherwise, shall not be discriminated against on the ground of the exercise of his right to manifestation of his religion in worship, teaching, practice and observance such as wearing religious emblem, head cover, or hijab in concomitant with the common uniform code or code of conduct in relation to the choice of colour, type, or design of such religious emblem, religious head cover or hijab.” Although the bill does not propose any fine or jail time for persons who discriminate against persons wearing hijab, it states that anyone who contravenes the section would have committed an offence. It further states that the High Court will have original jurisdiction on such matters while the National Human Rights Commission shall have the power either on its own motion or upon a petition presented by an aggrieved person to investigate allegations of any violation of the provisions of the Bill ithin a reasonable time or not more than 30 days. Hijab, a veil worn by Muslim women, has become a controversial issue in Nigeria. In Kwara State for instance, an attempt by the government to impose hijab on Christian missionary schools is being resisted by the in-grant Christian colleges.

Nigeria Could Be Owing ₦16trn By End Of 2021 – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has raised an alarm over the country’s rising debt profile, saying the situation is more critical now because of the huge amount borrowed to service the ailing economy. Obaseki raised the alarm on Wednesday during a meeting with the Transition Committee members at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital. He noted that the major oil giants like Chevron and Shell no longer invest so much oil as was obtainable in the past. The governor, being an investment banker, explained that Chevron is now one of the world’s investors in alternative fuel, adding that Shell intends to pull out of Nigeria. “In another year or so, where will we find this money that we go to Abuja to share every month? Last month, we got FAAC for March. The Federal Government printed an additional ₦50 to ₦60 billion to top-up for us to share,” he said. “We say remove subsidy, they say no. This April, next week again, we will go to Abuja and share. By the end of this year, the total borrowing is going to be in excess of ₦15 to ₦16 trillion. “My worry is that we will wake up one day like Argentina, the naira will be ₦1,000, ₦2,000 and will be moving because we don’t have money coming in. You are just borrowing, borrowing and borrowing without any means or idea of how to pay back.” Obaseki also spoke about the 2023 general elections, noting that politicians whose aim is to buy votes during the polls might find it tough doing so. He backed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the deployment of technology to track and monitor elections in the country. “INEC itself had also begun its own process of change. They have been worried, scandalised by what happened in Kogi and Bayelsa and were trying to redeem themselves. “So using technology, they made sure that as soon as you finish voting in the polling unit, that result was uploaded straight into a portal so they can see the pattern which makes it difficult to change results at the collation centers. “That was what helped us. So any candidate or political party that does not see this and expects that we will do business as we used to do before, we are taking a huge risk.”

Uzodimma says politicians sponsored Imo attacks, counters police on IPOB involvement

Hope Uzodimma, Imo governor, says some aggrieved politicians are behind the recent attacks on police stations and a correctional facility in the state. He said the politicians’ objective is to destablise the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. The governor spoke on Wednesday while featuring on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. He said: “What happened in Imo state last Monday is unbelievable. A group of hoodlums, of course sponsored by some known politicians in Imo state, decided to destroy public infrastructure and government facilities — and attacked a correctional centre facility and also attacked a police state headquarters. “But what is important to take home is for Nigerians to know of the plot by a group of aggrieved politicians to destablise the government of APC. I have done some thorough investigation and I have a credible lead as to those who are sponsoring these activities of these hoodlums. “We are working hard to ensure that the sponsors of these dastardly act must be brought to book.” The governor also said members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are not behind the attack. The police had earlier said the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an outfit of IPOB, was behind the violence in the state. But Uzodimma said hoodlums were hired from outside Imo state, noting that they only pretended to be IPOB members. He said: “They(politicians) try to identify grievances of people in a particular area. They hire hoodlums from outside Imo state. They bring them in pretending to be IPOB and they commit this crime and they go away. “It is not about IPOB. Yes, we agree, we have aggrieved IPOB members. But I can tell you, those who are doing these destructions, most of them were brought from outside Imo state.” The governor said his administration has trained over 4000 youths on community policing. He said they will work with vigilantes to support the efforts of security agencies to secure Imo state.

Nigerian missing student’s body found in UK pond

The body found on Monday in the search for missing 19-year-old Nigerian student Richard Okorogheye has been formally identified as his. “Our deepest sympathies are with Richard’s family at this incredibly difficult time,” UK’s Metropolitan Police said in a tweet confirming the tragic news on Wednesday. “They continue to be supported by specialist officers.” The body had been found in a pond in Epping Forest on Monday afternoon, 12 days after Okorogheye, who attends Oxford Brookes, was reported missing. UPDATE: A formal identification has confirmed that a body found in #EppingForest is that of Richard Okorogheye. Our deepest sympathies are with Richard’s family at this incredibly difficult time. They continue to be supported by specialist officers. https://t.co/IPZVOW4wGr — Metropolitan Police (@metpoliceuk) April 7, 2021 Okorogheye left his family home on the evening of March 22 in Ladbroke Grove, West London and was reported missing two days later, police have said. Investigations revealed that he took a taxi to Loughton, more than 22 kilometers from where he lives. Before his disappearance, Okorogheye who lives with sickle cell disease had been shielding, meaning he was not expected to leave home and minimise face-to-face contact for health reasons. In an interview with Channels Television, Okorogheye’s father, Christian, described him as a tall and strong teenager who enjoys talking to his friend. His father blamed his disappearance on depression following the lockdown and long stay at home. “He is a tall strong man; he enjoys talking to his friends,” he said. “At a point, he got cut off from his friends. Somehow, it happened that he met some people who we were not 100% sure about. “It has been very devastating. I don’t know how to describe it but it is serious. All we want to do now is how to get him back and tell us his story. “Richard has been on some kind of setting at home and I think that got him depressed in some ways. When you keep someone at home for like one month plus, and with all these things happening, it added to it. I think he got really fed up with the whole thing.”

So, nobody can come and use insecurity to intimidate the governor or any other governor.” Describing the APC’s N50 million donation as a Greek gift, Wike urged Matawalle not to receive the opposition again. It would be recalled that the APC governors also led by the Chairman of the APC Governor’s Forum and governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, in company of the National Chairman of the party were in the state for a similar visit. Responding, governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle expressed happiness with the visit by the PDP governors which he also described as timely following the Gusau market incident.

Imo Jailbreak: Inmates turn to cleaning, hawking jobs for survival

An exclusive investigation by Vanguard revealed that from the thousands of fleeing inmates some were said to have taken up menial jobs within and outside the Owerri metropolis to raise money. Vanguard was told that the choice areas for these inmates were brothels, motor parks, market square, even as some were said to have started the hawking trade. Also, some were said to have taken refuge in uncompleted buildings as their home as well as mingle around nightlife hotspots. Eyewitnesses narrated their experiences to Vanguard with the said inmates. The places visited by Vanguard include Control post along Onitsha road, Whethdral roundabout up to Poly Junction, IMSU junction as well as Irete axis on Owerri/Onitsha road. According to reports received by Vanguard, some notorious inmates do not want to go to their village, because they are afraid that they would be reported to the security agencies. Therefore, they engage in pick-pocketing at night to raise money quickly for themselves. Some on the other hand are looking to raise little money through cleaning jobs as part of starting afresh, just as some of them said they needed money to go back to their villages, as their people are not even aware that they were in prison for many years and that they were imprisoned by intimidation and false allegations against them. Those who said they had an encounter with some of the inmates, one Chike, known as “iron” said: “Our happiness is that my guy is back from prison thanks to the people who released them. My brother all the way from Ebonyi came to do hawking business and was arrested that they demolished Eke Ukwu market in Owerri. He committed no crime. We did not know he was in prison.” Another drama was said to have played out in Control post, a group of said to be “bad boys” jubilated over their freed friends one of which was said to have been arrested in connection with an alleged robbery/kidnapping between Control post, World Bank and Hospital junction along Owerri/ Port Harcourt road. They said: “Our men are back. We are drinking and enjoying. Work begins, who be police. Signal my man is back. They can’t come out now, later in the night. Men can’t go back to the village. That one no-follow.” A businessman, in Irete, who did not want his name mentioned said: “Some of these inmates are innocent. Two of them were in my friends business premises. They opened up and said they were among those freed and explained how they got into prison. My brother, you will shed tears. “Our people are suffering. They pleaded to my friend, that they want to join his boys in offloading bags of cement and clean up his business premises in order to raise money and go home. They said they are from Ngor Okpala local government area and have been in prison for more than 15 years. But my friend gave them N5000 and gave them food and that they should go home.” In another encounter, a source, owner of a business/entertainment outfit around one of the nightlife areas in Owerri, who chose to remain anonymous said: “Is it not the prisoners that now work as cleaners? They are responsible ladies just that they look famished and malnourished, but with time they will be Ok. What they need is just rehabilitation as some of them complained that they did nothing that should warrant their imprisonment. “Some of them are now in market places, motor parks as cleaners, some doing hawking business. It is not everything we see we say sometimes. You see, they are ready to wash plates. Some of them have repented. Some of them did not commit any offence. This is is wicked country”.
