Gunmen Burn Police Station In Imo, Free Detainees

It’s more worry for the residents of Imo State as the insecurity rate appears to be on the rise as a result of continued attacks on police facilities in the state. A day after gunmen attacked the Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, a group of armed men invaded another police facility in the state on Tuesday. The latest attack was carried out on the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area – just about an hour-and-a-half drive from the state capital. Sources said the gunmen, who came in buses and in a large number, arrived at the police station and freed all the suspects in detention before setting the building ablaze. Police authorities in the state confirmed the incident to Channels Television, although they insisted that the armoury at the station was intact. “Ehime Mbano (Police) Division has just been attacked, no casualty on the part of the police, no loss of arms, three vehicles burnt,” Orlando Ikeokwu who is the Police Public Relations Officer said in a text. On Monday, gunmen attacked the Police Command Headquarters in the state where they burnt almost all the vehicles parked there. The attack, carried out in the early hours of Monday, happened at a time when gunmen also invaded the Owerri Custodial Centre, freeing hundreds of inmates serving various jail terms. Authorities of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) put the figure of inmates who fled the correctional facility at 1,844. They, however, noted that six of the fleeing inmates voluntarily returned to the facility while 35 others refused to escape from custody. The incident was condemned by the Federal Government and the state government, as well as various individuals and groups in the country. Mohammed Adamu, who was the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at the time of the attacks, ordered the immediate deployment of additional units of Police Mobile Force (PMF) and other police tactical squads to Imo. He stated that this was important to strengthen security in the state and prevent further attacks on security formations or any other critical national infrastructure in the state. The former police chief had also directed the Commissioner of Police in Imo and a new Special Investigation Team to carry out holistic investigations into the incident, with a view to arresting and bringing the perpetrators of the attacks to justice. A day after the incident, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, as well as the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and Adamu visited Imo for an on-the-spot assessment of the attacked facilities. But the attack on the police station in Ehime Mbano is said to have occurred barely three hours after the vice president, the minister, and the former police chief left the state.

ASUP strike: FG approves governing councils for polytechnics

JUST as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has commenced industrial action, the Federal Government in a knee-jerk response approved the reconstitution of Governing Councils for the Federal Polytechnics. Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, announced this at a parley, on Tuesday, in Abuja, with the leadership of ASUP led by its President, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe. He informed the ASUP leadership that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the new Councils for the Polytechnics and that goverment was only waiting for the Easter break to be over to officially release the list of members of the Governing Councils and subsequent inauguration. President of ASUP, Comrade Ezeibe presented 13-point demands to the Minister for immediate action, while insisting that the strike which commenced 12 midnight of April 6 could not be suspended in spite of the meeting with the Federal Government and appeal by the Miniter to shelve the strike. According to him, the meeting with the minister was just the beginning of a process of resolving the issues in dispute, saying the Union had given the goverment ample to respond to the demands of ASUP. Ezeibe maintained until the issues including N4 billion arrears of the minimum wage, promotion arrears from 2017 to 2020 in some schools, neglect of the sector, among others are satisfactorily resolved, the strike would not be called off. He said: “The expiration of the union’s ultimatum issued since March 2020, as well as the development of new issues of concern in the sector due to the negligence of the government. “Today, therefore, marks day 1 of the execution of the resolutions of our union. The strike has not been suspended as it is just a few hours old,” he said. But the Miniter while appealing to the lecturers to shelve the strike, it was possible to reach an agreement with the Union while disclosing that the Governing Councils, which is one of the key demands of the Union has been approved by the President and would be inaugurated soon. Tribune Online gathered reliably that the list would be released before the end of this week by the Ministry of Education, while other demands would be expeditiously looked at for quick and amicable resolution. Adamu who noted he would not go into specifics of the document handed over to him by the President of ASUP, which was a detailed brief of the negotiations. On the Rapid Response Committee, which ASUP said was instrumental to peaceful resolution of some internal crises in Polytechnics in past, but has unfortunately abandoned its meetings, the Minister reassured the Union that all points raised would be carefully looked into and will be attended to. He said: “Today, I will not go into specifics or give you any answers. If I’m not mistaken, I have 13 points that you have readout. The permanent secretary is not here, or else I would have asked him why the Rapid Response Committee is no longer holding its meetings. The committee can solve eight of the issues raised. “For the governing council, I can assure you that it is set already. We were just waiting for the break to be over and they will be announced and inaugurated. All the points will be looked into carefully and I give you the assurance that all will be attended to,” he said.

Favouritism Responsible For Nigeria’s Backwardness – Jonathan

A former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has said that the tradition of favouritism in leadership positions among families, friends, acquaintances rather than ability and capability to deliver is responsible for Nigeria’s backwardness. Jonathan said this Tuesday at the Palace of the Emir of Bauchi during a on essay working visit. He said the tradition in Nigeria is that before one can be appointed to an office or given a responsibility, he must know someone at the top echelon in the country, regretting that the development has taken the nation backwards. The former president, who was reacting to the introductory comments made by the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said, “Yes, I did not know him when I met him and made him the FCT minister. “In Nigeria, we have this tradition where some people feel that some ministries are big and juicy and must be given to a special person or that you have to know someone before you give him a responsibility, role or put him somewhere. It is not like that with me, it is not my way of doing things.” Earlier in his comments, Governor Mohammed expressed happiness over the visit of the former president whom he said was instrumental to his fame in Nigeria. Responding, the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, described the former president as detribalised Nigerian who demonstrated patriotism, nationalism and statesmanship during his reign as president of the country. The monarch who also conferred the traditional title of ‘Jigon Bauchi’ to Jonathan said that the State Traditional Council thanked him for making Bauchi his home and given the opportunity to Bala Mohammed to serve as the FCT minister.

Imo jailbreak: We will pardon escaped inmates who return voluntarily – FG

Fugitives who escaped from the custodial centre in Owerri, the Imo capital, will be granted amnesty if they return voluntarily, the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has said. He said this during the inspection of the centre on Tuesday after it was attacked by unknown gunmen. During the attack, over 1,880 inmates were said to have escaped while 36 stayed back. According to the minister, escape from custody is unlawful, and a crime. He explained that if those who escaped return willingly, they will be pardoned from a trial for unlawful escape. However, they will still be made to face a trial for their actual offence and serve their jail term, if convicted. He said, “Unlawful escape from custody is a crime but the government in its magnanimity will grant amnesty to prisoners who willfully return. “They will no longer be charged with an unlawful escape but only for the initial crimes that took them to prison. So we urge all escapees to return before they are caught on the run.” The minister also described the Monday jailbreak at Owerri Correctional Center and the razing of the Imo State Police Command headquarters as the worst in the recent history of the country. The ex-governor of Osun State who said that the attackers operated as terrorists, ordered the relocation of Owerri Recreational Club and other structures which he said were posing as a security threat to the premises of the Owerri Custodial Centre. He said that during the EndSARS protest, custodial centres in Ondo and Osun states were attacked, while an attempt to attack that of Lagos was repelled. He regretted the targeting of custodial centres in recent times, saying that the federal government would soon roll out adequate measures to protect them. Aregbesola vowed that those who perpetrated the attack would be apprehended and prosecuted.

Mr. Mustapha also announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the transitioning of the PTF to the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on Covid-19, effective from April 1, 2021. The PSC, which will now operate with a modified mandate to reflect the non-emergent status of the Covid-19, will function up till December 31. Osinbajo: Search has begun for cowards who released dangerous criminals in Imo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has condemned the attacks on the federal prison and police command headquarters in Owerri, Imo state. Some inmates were freed when gunmen attacked the correctional centre on Monday, while buildings and vehicles were razed when the police headquarters was invaded. The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) had said over 1,800 inmates escaped from custody, while the police accused members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being behind the attacks. During his visit to the affected facilities on Tuesday, the vice-president condemned the jailbreak which he said led to the release of “dangerous criminals”, adding that the search for the escaped inmates “has begun in earnest”. “An attack on the critical institutions of law enforcement, police stations and prisons is an attack on the safety, security and well being of the citizens. “It is not merely an attack on law and order. It is a mindless attack on the people and the way of life of the people. When you attack police stations and free dangerous criminals, you put women, men, children and their possessions and livelihoods at risk,” he said. “It is in this beautiful land, that our county learned an enduring lesson on the futility of violence. But there are those who believe that to resolve issues and conflicts other than by violence is cowardliness. “If the voices of their hatred prevails we will experience the terrible and fruitless loss of life that violence begets. Our system is not perfect, and we can seek to perfect it. “There is no earthly system that is perfect, but what democracy and the institutions of democratic governance provide, are channels, however imperfect for seeking redress for injury, for peacefully addressing the problems that ail us. “There are many who are working tirelessly everyday to improve our system, to build up and to enhance it. We must therefore, reject the agents of anarchy that seek to weaponise the frustration and discontent of young people, for their own profit. “The path of violence can only lead to disaster, that consumes everyone, at least to the desolation of our communities. It is easy to take peace for granted, but we need not learn the value of peace through the horrible crucible of war.” Osinbajo, however, assured Imo residents that security presence has been enhanced to ensure that peace reigns in the state.

NEPOTISM: FG’s injustice fueling insecurity, Ohanaeze kicks as Buhari appoints northerner IGP

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, on Tuesday, condemned the appointment of a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, as the acting Inspector-General of Police. The group said the injustice of the Federal Government under the leadership of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was responsible for the growing agitations and insecurity in the South-East. Ohanaeze National Publicity Secretary, Chief Alex Ogbonnia, stated this in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH. The PUNCH had reported that Buhari appointed Baba, a northerner, as IGP despite pleas by Ohanaeze that the President considers a South-Easterner as the next police boss. Baba is taking over from Mohammed Adamu, whose tenure Buhari extended for three months on February 4. Born in 1963, Baba, an alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Maiduguri, joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1988. However, speaking with The PUNCH , the Ohanaeze National Publicity Secretary said it was most unfortunate that the President has chosen to sideline the people of the South-East in his recent appointment of service chiefs and now in the appointment of an IGP. Ogbonnia said, “It is unjust and unfair to sideline the South-East in the security architecture of the country. Injustice promotes insecurity; it promotes all forms of crisis and problems. With injustice, there is no peace anywhere. “What is happening in South-East today in form of agitations is as a result of injustice. So, we the elders are put in a great dilemma because the younger generation is attacking us and we have been telling them to hold on, believing that the President would have a change of mind. “We thought that the President would be concerned about the level of injustice, agitations and crises we have in the South-East and would try to ameliorate these things but unfortunately, he is not thinking towards that direction. It is most unfortunate and Ohanaeze will come up with a stronger statement.” The PUNCH had earlier reported that after much clamour by Nigerians that the President replace the nation’s service chiefs and inject fresh blood especially in the country’s anti-terror war in the North-East, Buhari appointed new service chiefs in January 2021. They are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (Delta State); Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru (Kaduna State); Chief of Naval Staff; Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu (Kano State); and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amoo (Osun State)
