Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, has declared Wednesday, June 23, holiday in honour of his dead former commissioners. The former commissioners are Mr Fidelis Nweze and Mr Uche Okah. The governor gave the order on Tuesday when he announced the death of the Infrastructure Development Commissioner, Nweze, who died in a fatal motor accident in Abuja. The governor directed that all offices and markets be closed while all flags are to be flown at half mast on Wednesday across the state. He urged all government officials to embark on fasting to seek the face of God in the affairs of the state even as he charged the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN to organise three days of prayers and fasting starting from Wednesday at Christian Ecumenical Centre. The governor then prayed for peaceful repose of the souls of the late members of the state executive council.

Uzoddimma: Landlords To Be Held Responsible For Criminal Tenants

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, yesterday, said house owners would be held responsible for any act of criminality committed by their tenants. Uzodimma stated this when he received in audience traditional leaders and stakeholders from Ikeduru and Ngor Okpala local government areas of the state. He noted that all hands must be on deck to address the security problem in the state. The governor, therefore, urged all traditional rulers and others who own property in their localities to rent out their houses to those with known means of livelihood. He said experience has shown that most landlords were careless about the identity of those living in their houses and warned that landlords and traditional rulers would be held accountable for the ills of their tenants and neighbours.

Moghalu charges Ndigbo to look beyond Buhari, explains why secession will fail

Anambra guber aspirant bemoans leadership disconnect from citizens A former presidential candidate, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has charged Ndigbo to look beyond the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and plan towards repositioning the South East region beyond his era. Insisting that the Buhari government would end in the next 23 months, he also stated that the current secession agitation might not succeed now due to several constitutional, international and other extraneous factors. Moghalu, who spoke on What Do The Igbo Want at the inauguration ceremony of the Igbonine Socio-Cultural Organisation in Enugu yesterday, insisted that although Ndigbo were committed to an indivisible Nigeria, time was ripe for the rest of the country to prove their commitment to a country anchored on equity, fairness and justice. Lamenting the situation of the Igbo since the end of the civil war, he stated that while the region had survived economically, Moghalu, who had declared his intention to run for the 2023 presidential election, said it had become difficult for the South East to survive politically, due to the psychological impact of defeat in the civil war. He said the situation had brought several choices on the people of the region including constitutional restructuring to true federalism with significant autonomy for regional or state governments, demand for a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction, secession (Biafra) and allowing the status quo to remain. Moghalu, who is a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), argued that although restructuring was inevitable for Nigeria to survive, President Buhari’s public opposition to it would make it difficult to be realised during his time in office. On a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction, Moghalu stated that it was essential to stabilise the country and secure full reconciliation after the Nigeria civil war, regretting that the option was, however, under attack from some forces outside the South East region. He also decried the situation in which the two major political parties in the country-the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) were not committed to allowing a president from the South East region. IN a related development, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu, yesterday, declared that one of the major challenges to the development and advancement in the country was the disconnect between government and the people. Moghalu, who is a governorship aspirant in the November 6, 2021, Anambra State gubernatorial election, disclosed this in Lokoja, Kogi State, while addressing journalists, maintaining that his mission was to restore the people’s confidence in governance through good leadership. “So, my mission mainly, is to restore confidence, restore the people’s confidence in government before infrastructure development.” The people will be willing to work with the government once their confidence is restored. It is about engagement. “When people see the honesty, commitment and dedication of their leaders, there is no way they won’t listen to the government. Insecurity, insurgence and other challenges will also attract my immediate concern,” he said. On his chances in the APC governorship primaries, he said: “I have offered myself and I know I have what it takes. I believe strongly that power belongs to God and he gives it to whosoever He pleases at His own time. I’m confident that by the grace of God, I will make it.”

Buhari sets up committee to lift 100m Nigerians out of poverty

President Muhammadu Buhari has launched a steering committee on national poverty reduction with growth strategy (NPRGS). In its latest report, World Bank noted that the high inflation rate in Nigeria is worsening poverty and depressing business activities. The bank said an estimated 7 million Nigerians were pushed into poverty in 2020 due to rising prices alone. In a statement issued by Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, on Tuesday, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will lead the committee. Buhari reiterated his commitment to lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in ten years, with a well-researched framework for implementation and funding. He said the NPRGS has proposed to establish a private equity fund to ensure mobilisation drive and sustainable management of resources. “This journey began in January 2021 when I directed the Chairman of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and Secretary to the Government of the Federation to collaboratively work together to articulate what that will lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in ten (10) years,” Buhari said. “I am happy to note that the process of designing this inclusive poverty reduction strategy recognized and addressed past mistakes as well as laying the foundation for a sustainable poverty reduction through the wide range consultations held at all levels of government, development partners, the private sector as well as the civil society.” Buhari added that the NPRGS would address the underlying causes of poverty in various geopolitical zones in the country. “The major challenge before this national steering committee is to translate our good intention into positive impact of the average Nigerian so that we create an appreciative impact on the poverty situation in our country,” he added. “If India can lift 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016, Nigeria can surely lift 100 million out of poverty in 10 years. Fortunately, we have already started but we need to unlock the challenges of slow implementation, inappropriate targeting and absence of adequate resources. “The performance of our economy despite COVID-19 gives me comfort that we can achieve our goal but we need to seriously scale up and work more with state and local governments. “This call becomes more pertinent in the face of recent forecasts by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and our own Nigerian Economic Summit Group which all agreed that Nigeria needs to frontally tackle her poverty situation if our economic gains are to be sustained.’’ Buhari listed the committee’s duties to include: anchor collaborative efforts; provide oversight for the implementation of the strategy; provide guidance to the technical working group and federal ministries, extra ministerial departments and agencies, subnational governments and other stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the programme. He urged the committee to commence work to foster the activities of the technical working group.

This was disclosed in a statement by Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa, information officer in the ministry. “The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Retired). “The Minister of Foreign Affairs during the brief ceremony congratulated the immediate past service chiefs on their appointment by Mr. President and called on them to deploy their wealth of experience to promote Nigeria’s interest during their tour of duty in countries of accreditation.” However, the statement was silent on the posting of the other former Service chiefs, Vice Admiral Ibok- Ette Ibas (retired) former Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retired), ex-Chief of Air Staff and and Air Vice Marshal Muhammad S. Usman (Rtd), former Chief of Defense Intelligence. Daily Trust reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had, on February 4, 2021, appointed the ex-service chiefs as non-career ambassadors. The president appointed the ex-service chiefs in 2015 and refused to bow to the pressure to relieve them of their duties until they “voluntarily resigned”. Before their “retirement” there were widespread calls for their removal over failure to contain insecurity. Their appointment as Nigeria’s ambassadors to foreign countries sparked public outrage, with calls on the Senate to reject their nominations. Despite the outrage, the Senate, on February 23, 2021, confirmed their nominations.

EndSARS: Lagos says most injuries from Lekki tollgate were from ‘machete cuts, stampede’

The Lagos state government says most of the injuries sustained by protesters at the Lekki tollgate were from machete cuts and stampede. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, head of service, stated this on Tuesday, when he appeared before the Lagos judicial panel on police brutality to represent the state government. Muri-Okunola came to the panel to present a timeline of the activities of the Lagos state government during the #EndSARS protests, including the Lekki tollgate shooting. The head of service noted that the state government established an ad-hoc committee, referred to as the incident command centre, during the protests to monitor the security situation in Lagos. He said when Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, visited Reddington hospital and General hospital, Marina, on October 21, 2020, it was discovered that 25 patients were receiving treatment in the two hospitals. “Due to the monitoring activities of the incident command centre, we were informed that there were indeed casualties in some of our hospitals in Lagos. There were more than other places — based on our feedback and information monitoring — in Reddington hospital on Admiralty way, and in General hospital, Marina,” he said. “Getting to about 10:30pm (on October 20, 2020), the governor then decided that we should go out to see what was going on for ourselves — a decision that his core security personnel rejected outrightly as unsafe. “At about 12:30am, 21st October — we have crossed to midnight now — because of the number of people that were reported to have been in Reddington hospital, the governor, against the said security advice, decided to visit and see what was going on at the toll plaza, the Reddington hospital and General hospital, Lagos. “In this Reddington hospital, these individuals were injured in that axis. Some of them alluded to being injured in a stampede of running, falling over each other. “Predominantly, there were about 13 people injured in Reddington hospital Admiralty way. The General Hospital also had 12 patients. The doctors in charge said there was one of those patients that was being moved to LASUTH, who had more severe injuries from machete wounds. “At the time we were there, most of the injuries were all in the nature of cuts, bruises from machete wounds and stampede. Nobody at the hospitals said they were shot at.” He insisted that only two persons died as a result of the incident at Lekki tollgate. “The Lagos state governor confirmed two deaths — one of which was said to have died at Reddington hospital on Admiralty way, who died as a result of blunt force trauma, and the other at Yaba. The governor stated that there was going to be an investigation to confirm the nexus of the death in the incident of Lekki,” he added. Commenting on the role played by the social media during the #EndSARS protests, he noted that online activities contributed to the “wanton destruction” that occured during the demonstrations. “The incitement of this misinformation played a major role in the mayhem, wanton destruction and loss of lives that followed the Lekki incident throughout Lagos state, costing taxpayers losses that may take years and billions of naira to mitigate,” he said. “There has been controversy about the actual number of alleged deaths at the Lekki toll incident. However, since 22 October, 2020, many of the people reported to have been killed issued denunciation of their rumoured deaths.” During cross-examination, Adesina Ogunlana, counsel to #EndSARS protesters, asked the head of service about the identity of those involved in the shooting at Lekki tollgate. “Can you confirm that men from Bonny camp were at the scene?” Ogunlana asked. “That is what I heard. Based on the information that we heard, military men from Bonny camp were there,” Muri-Okunola responded.

IPOB to S’east Govs: you’re too small to decide for Ndigbo

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has flayed the South East Governors and other political leaders in the region over the disowning and condemnation statement credited to them against the group and its security outfit, Eastern Security Network, ESN. The group said it was regrettable that the Igbo leaders would be quick to disown and betray their own in their quest to appease their slave masters. In a statement issued by the Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB who noted the leaders had since lost grip and control of the masses, explained that the move was a desperate attempt to regain the trust of their paymasters. The statement read in part, “The attention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been drawn to the purported disowning and condemnation of IPOB and the Eastern Security Network, ESN, by the frustrated South East Governors and few self-centered political leaders in the region. “We are not however, surprised because they were the same people to proscribe us before the federal government tagged us terrorists. “The purported statement by these shameless political generals without foot soldiers has only further exposed them as Caliphate boot-leakers. They know too well that they have since lost grip and control of the masses, hence, their desperation to regain the trust of their paymasters. “The only publicly disowned IPOB thinking that doing so will make them regain the trust and favour of the Caliphate. “The governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the handful traitors masquerading as the Igbo political elite should wake up to the realities that they have since lost the confidence of the people. We understand the worry of these governors: They are rattled by the unflinching support and loyalty of the masses to IPOB. “It’s only unfortunate, shameful and disgraceful that the so-called Igbo leaders will be quick to disown and betray their own in their quest to appease their slave masters. The South East Governors again, in 2017 they sat together in Enugu State to proscribe IPOB and federal government declared them terrorists with the support of South East Governors while they are not. “To their shame, how many times have their Northern counterparts disowned the bloody terrorists, bandits and Fulani herdsmen rampaging the country? “So, the South East self-acclaimed Leaders are quick to disown IPOB and ESN, yet they are calling us to accept the calls for peaceful negotiations? What a hypocrisy! “How can South East governors be so desperate for power beyond 2023 that they can sacrifice anything and anybody for personal gains? In case they don’t know, even the Northerners they are trying to impress understand the handwriting on the wall. They know that the governors are on their own. They can’t decide for the over 70 million Biafrans home and abroad. “How can five South East governors determine the fate of over 70m people? These South East Vassals should know that during referendum, they only have one vote just like the man on the street. “If these politicians are discerning enough, they should know that they should first push for referendum to determine if the people they pretend to be speaking for actually have their support. No matter their pretenses, our people are tired of One Nigeria. They have since opted for Biafra, and there is no going back on this irrevocable resolve! “We want to unequivocally declare again, that the five South East governors and the few self-appointed Igbo elite are too infinitesimal to speak for the millions of Biafrans who are tired of being held hostage in this contraption called Nigeria. They don’t even command the loyalty of all their appointees let alone the egalitarian Igbo nation that never gave them the stolen mandate they parade. “Anybody listening to these traitors does so to his peril. There is no negotiation on the people’s resolve to restore Biafra where human dignity will be respected.”
