The Akwa Ibom State University, (AKSU), has disclosed that 14 lecturers have been shown the exit door for sexually abusing students. Although the names of the randy teachers were not mentioned, the Vice Chancellor of the state-owned university, Prof Nse Essien, said the university will continue to weed out undesirable elements within its ranks. Speaking during a familiarisation visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Wednesday, Prof. Essien disclosed that 38, out of the 42 programmes run by the university have received full accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC). Prof. Essien, who will be one year in office on August 3, also disclosed that everything was in place for commencement of radio broadcasting by the university. Further to that, the former Commissioner for Education said that the university unbundled its Mass Communications programme in line with the emerging trends and communication needs of modern society, resulting in the creation of departments of Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting and Journalism and Media Studies. While admitting that he had been far away from the Union and the media community, the vice chancellor promised to cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship between the NUJ and AKSU. In his remarks, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, commended the vice chancellor for coming to share his thoughts with journalists and assured him that the new partnership, when given effect, will add value to the rating and standing of the institution. Comrade Etuk suggested to Prof. Essien to use the occasion of his first anniversary in office to showcase the development in AKSU, under his watch.

Court bars Akeredolu from investigating chief judge

The judge gave the order in a ruling on an ex-parte application filed by Justice Akeredolu. Details soon…

Financial Insensitivity: Group Chides Abia Speaker

A group, Abia Renaissance, has through it coordinator, Chibuzor Opara, issued a press statement stating that the “Abia State House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon Chinedum Orji, the son of the former Governor of Abia State, T. A Orji and members of the Abia State House of Assembly have shared a second set of exotic cars which included the clark of the house”. In a press statement made available by our source, the group lamented by asking, “How insensitive a goverment can be in a face of hunger and starvation”? The statement read in part, “Many people have concluded that what is currently ongoing in Abia state today is “cover me, I cover your sin too or rub my back while I rub yours. “Today being 8th of June 2021, Abia civil servants including political appointees are yet to receive their May salary as they are told that there is no money. “This is coming 16days after May allocation was shared by Federal Ministry of finance. “They are yet to tell Abians if our state was excluded from the N616b that was shared by FAAC last month as Abia is estimated to have gotten 3.5B. “At the same time, the Abia House of Assembly led by Rt Hon Chinedum Orji the son of the former Governor and members are sharing the second set of cars to house members including the Clark of the house. “On being sworn in 2019 they were given land cruiser Prado each with the leadership of the house getting additional cars or monetized ranging from Hilux jeeps to Prado jeeps. “This means that all the principal officers got additional cars or cash of 17m outside the statutory Prado that was given to them in 2019. “Within the same house session, they are being given another set of Hilux to each of the 24 members including the Clark and higher grade like land cruiser jeep for the speaker. Continuing, “A total of 900m was used to source for these 29 Hilux jeeps and landcruiser for Abia legislators. Many of these house members park these cars outside their compound due to lack of space. “This likely explains why Abia state government cannot pay May Salary but can lavish N900 on legislators second bonanza. “Abia is the only State in the South east and maybe in Nigeria that will be given two sets of jeeps for their legislators when workers are being owed average of 26 months arrears of salary. “For clarity, the state owes the following institutions: Abia State University -9 months; Abia State University Teaching Hospital – 24months; Abia State Poly- 26 months; Health Management Board- 18months; Technical Education Arochukwu – 27 months. “Local government workers – 6 months; Senior secondary schools- 15months; Junior secondary schools-13 months; Primary schools- 7 months; State pension – 28momths; local government pension – 21 months. “Most of these workers are being paid half salaries as most workers do not know what they earn monthly. “Salaries are being cut without recourse to civil servants. In some cases with as high as N40.000 removed. “This Abia House of Assembly members do not seat more than 4 times in a month and Abia resources is bleeding under them. “In the three years financials of Abia state as published and hosted on Abia website, It shows that Abia state government pays about N225m monthly as overhead to these members outside their monthly salary of N600k. “This also confirms that each should get an average of 13m monthly. “The report also shows that in 2018 Abia spent N1b on local travels and N2b on cost of chattering Private jet. “It is instructive to note that the family of the former Governor TA Orji and family since 1999 till date, has never paid for air ticket for any of their trips from their pocket including their house help and the pet dog. Abia State has always carried this cost . “Who will liberate Abia State? How can these few people be raping the Abia with impunity? Why are the elders of this state quite? Does it mean they are not seeing or hearing how their state is being ran or are they part of the system? “Are they being fed with the monthly blood tonic to ensure they don’t talk? “The same financial as published in Abia website (Abia .ng) shows that N3.4b was used in feeding at government house while workers and pensioners are starving to death . “We are calling on Abians of good conscience to rise and defend the state from this rampaging rapist. “This has again proved that executive in conjunction or agreement with these legislators don’t mean well for Abians. “In this dwindling economic situation when lack of funds is the reason for non payment of salaries and pensions. The state is spending as much as N900m to buy a second car within 2 years for house of Assembly members. “Buhari is not the cause of this finacial rascality neither are we going to blame APC. “Abia youths should not be deceived again as we now know who our real enemies are. “It is unfortunate that the Governor cannot even resist these pressure and has ended up mortgaging our future. “We call on Abians even in diaspora to rise to the occasion and call this present government to order”.

Igboho issues fresh eviction notice to killer-herdsmen in South West

A Yoruba Freedom fighter, Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho has given a fresh eviction notice to killer herdsmen in South West zone saying he will ensure they are all smoked out of the forests very soon. Igboho, in an interview, anchored by his Spokesperson, Mr Oluyomi Koiki in a viral video said he would never give any order without monitoring compliance. He said the issue of agitation for Yoruba nation is non-negotiable and no Jupiter can stop it. The popular Yoruba man also insisted that no governor can say Yoruba nation rally must not hold in his state noting if any governor says that, it will not be obeyed because Yoruba land belongs to all Yoruba indigenes. He further warned criminal elements hibernating in the forests to leave because henceforth, there must not be any issue of kidnapping again in the zone. Chief Adeyemo who spoke in Yoruba said, “how can six million people be commanding about 250 million of other Nigerians. Marriage is not by force. We can’t live with you again. Yoruba nation is a vehicle of salvation and I want all Yoruba to board the vehicle and have their seats.” On the agitation struggle, he stressed that there is no going back. “How can we go back when we are almost in our destination. Those who have not joined us should do so now because there’s no election come 2023. Yoruba will go.” He appealed to all youths not to insult elders in Yoruba land including the traditional rulers. “Please, don’t insult our elders again. I don’t want anyone to cast aspersions to our traditional rulers that they have collected money. No, don’t do that. Even, if they were given money, it’s part of common wealth that was stolen.” “Don’t fight the police or any security agents. Let’s do our rally peacefully.Tell President Buhari, if he doesn’t understand Yoruba, tell him in English Language that we don’t want bandits in our zone again. Work has begun already and as from Monday, I will begin combing all forests in Yoruba land.” “I want all Fulani on Yoruba land to leave. I, myself will monitor compliance to the eviction notice. I don’t issue an order without ensuring compliance. As from Monday, we don’t want to hear of any kidnapping in Yorubaland again. I will show them the stuff Yoruba people are made of.” “We will tell them there is clear distinction between Yoruba and Fulani. All these weapons they are brandishing, we will collect them with ease. We will blow ‘wind’ into all the forests in Yoruba land. If we don’t prove to these people who we are now, they will be encroaching on our lands when we achieve our Yoruba nation.” He dared anyone who claimed to have given him money on the agitation to come forward and say it out now. “If you know you have given me money that I should shelve Yoruba nation struggle, come out and say it now. No amount of money can stop me from going ahead with this struggle. You can’t kill me. Kill who? Throw bomb at me? If you throw bomb, I, too, will send thunder”. On his rumoured kidnap, he dismissed it saying “no one can kidnap me. I know you Yoruba people love me. I’m not missing. We are almost there. All those who go out with me to rallies, you are safe. No policeman can arrest you. We are asking for our rights. No one can intimidate us on our father land. No governor can say we must not have rally in his state.” “We are in Yoruba land. It will be okay if Britain or United Nations come to our aid to help us actualize it, if not we will never back down. It’s possible some political hangers-on will align with politicians because of benefits they get from them, don’t mind them; they are too minute to stop us”, he said.

Spanish Man Jailed For Killing, Eating His Mother

Spanish man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after killing his mother and eating her remains. Alberto Sánchez Gómez, 28, was arrested in 2019 after police found body parts around his mother’s home – some in plastic containers, reports the BBC. The court rejected Sánchez’s arguments that he was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the killing. He will now serve 15 years for murder and a further five months for the desecration of a corpse. He has also been ordered to pay his brother €60,000 ($73,000, £52,000) in compensation. Police arrived at the home in eastern Madrid in February 2019 after a friend raised concerns about the welfare of María Soledad Gómez, who was in her 60s. During the trial, the court heard that Sánchez, then aged 26, had strangled his mother during a dispute. He then dismembered and ate parts of her body over the following two weeks, feeding some to his dog. Spanish media say he had been known to police because of violence against his mother and that he had breached a restraining order at the time of his arrest.

Fear in Anambra as ‘Bakassi Boys’ re-emerges

There are growing concerns over the suspected return of a disbanded security group, ‘Bakassi Boys’ to the streets of Awka, in Anambra State on Monday. It is not clear who is behind the group. But with the growing insecurity, the resurgence of the dreaded outfit in the southeastern region, might compound the already vexing situation. The dreaded ‘Bakassi Boys’ vigilante group, who engaged in jungle justice in Anambra State during the time of former governor, Chinwoke Mbadinuju, allegedly resurfaced after two decades to crush cultists and other criminals. The Guardian gathered that the group was seen moving around the state capital in two vans, singing and warning criminals to stay away from the area. Reports stated that the boys, who came mainly from alleged “cult groups” have taken over Awka town in recent times without any response from the police or the state government. The police in Awka, seems not to know about the activities of the group. But the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, expressed the willingness of the command to work with any stakeholder in ensuring security of lives and property in the state. The Bakassi Boys, it could be recalled, emerged in the late 1999, a period of high incidences of security in the commercial cities of the southeast part of the country such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri and Enugu, among others. It was under the administration of Chinwoke Mbadinuju as governor of Anambra State. They were usually armed with machetes and guns and an array of black magic artifacts and juju worn around their body. The manner in which they knew or discovered if one was evil or not was by the use of dark magic in which they placed a magical silver-coloured machete on the chest of any suspicious person, and if the machete’s colour changed from silver to blood red it meant the person had committed a heinous crime at some point in their life, and invariably such a person would be killed immediately. Their method of administering their “jungle justice” endeared them to the peoples that during their activities, many criminals were either killed by them or forced to flee from the Southeast where they operated for fear of their lives. However, their reign and popularity were cut short following allegations that members were embarking on extrajudicial killings of suspected petty thieves, armed robbers, ritual killers, corrupt persons and anyone considered to be evil. These were the allegations that forced then President, Olusegun Obasanjo, to disband the group in 2003. A Civil Rights Activist, Jerome Nwachukwu, told The Guardian in Enugu yesterday that, “as much as the society is in dire need of security, what it cannot tolerate now is jungle justice” According to him, “Our people fell in love with the dreaded Bakassi Boys then, because they succeeded in reducing crimes to the barest minimum, but these days, we insist that suspected criminals should be given the benefit of fair hearing. The group is not licensed to prosecute criminals or take another life. It should allow those charged with the responsibility to do so”. Mrs. Ijeoma Uche, a trader in Enugu, who said she heard about the news, added: “I hope it does not compromise the already bad security of the state? I hope they have really come to provide security services and not to add to the pains of the people? This is because there are several security outfits working in the state, yet crimes have continued to increase. If they have come to compliment what is on ground, I will support them but if it is to create additional pains on our people, then, whoever is behind them, should retreat. “ I know that with the level of insecurity in the land, the people are desirous to finding solutions to them. So I encourage them to support them, if it is established that they are for the safety of the people”.

Ebonyi Pastor kills wife, buries corpse in shallow grave

A pastor in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria’s South-south, has been detained by the police for allegedly killing his wife. The incident happened at a village called Ikot Ataku, Okon, in Eket Local Government Area. The pastor has been identified as Chris Enoch, the founder of Omega Word Global Ministries. He is from Ebonyi State, Nigeria’s South-east. The youth president of Okon Clan, Effiong Johnson told PREMIUM TIMES, Wednesday night, that Mr Enoch killed the wife, Patience, seven days ago and buried her corpse in the shallow grave inside their gated compound where they have been living with their five children. The eldest child is 15 years old. Mr Enoch’s church has been operating inside the same compound which is rented. The community became suspicious when the pastor’s children complained to neighbours that they had not seen their mother for days after she had a quarrel with their dad. The youths of the community, led by their president, Mr Johnson, who is also a ‘community police officer’, went to search the pastor’s compound and were shocked to discover the woman’s corpse buried in a shallow grave. The youths handed over the pastor to the police. The slain woman was a petty trader who used to sell pastries in the local market. Court Sentences Former Bank PHB Boss, Francis Atuche To Over 6 Years In Prison

A Lagos High Court sitting in the Ikeja area has sentenced former managing director of defunct Bank PHB, Francis Atuche to over 6 years in prison. In a judgment that lasted over 10 hours, Justice Lateefat Okunnu convicted Atuche alongside a former Chief Financial Officer of the bank, Ugo Anyanwu. The two were convicted on at least 6 of a 27-count amended charge of conspiracy to commit a felony and stealing brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). While Atuche who was found guilty on counts 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 23 of the charge would serve a 6-year term for each count, Anyanwu will serve a 4-year jail term for counts 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 22 and 24 of the amended charge. They are to serve their jail term consecutively. This sentence is coming after a trial that lasted over 12 years. In delivering her sentence, Justice Okunnu held that the EFCC successfully proved its case against the convicts beyond a reasonable doubt. The judge rejected claims by the defendants suggesting that they were merely professionally negligent. She specifically held that Atuche and Anyanwu abused their powers, ignored established rules and regulations thereby putting the bank and depositors’ funds in danger. The court also came to the conclusion that the convicts corruptly took advantage of their positions to confer on themselves undue financial benefits without regard to the health of the bank. “The convict stole from the bank and depositors and because of their action, taxpayers money was used to bail out the bank”. Justice Okunnu held that she had considered the plea of the convicts, but there must be consequences for wrongdoing, adding that sentences are not just for punishment but also for deterrence. She also ruled that the defendant should make restitution of the amount stolen from the bank. They are to pay back the sum of N25.7billion to the Federal government to replace the funds stolen from the public to bail out the bank. According to the Judge, they are to serve their jail terms at the Kirikiri maximum correctional facility in Lagos. Justice Okunnu however, cleared Atuche’s wife on the charge of conspiracy and stealing. According to the judge, the EFCC failed to link her to the crime and insisted that suspicion no matter how strong can not take the place of fact. The judge held that it was not proven that she was aware of the source of the funds she received into her account from her husband and she had no powers to take any decision to influence the transaction. The EFCC had alleged that between November 2007 and April 2008, the accused persons stole about N25.7bn belonging to the bank. The anti-graft agency had also claimed that of the total N25.7bn, they stole about N14.7bn by fraudulently describing it as a loan to some companies and subsequently converted the said sum to personal use. The Commission had listed the companies as Future View Securities, Extra Oil Limited, Resolution Trust and Investment Limited, and Tradjek Nigeria Ltd. The EFCC also alleged that another N11bn stolen by the defendants was used to purchase about 984,375,000 units of Bank PHB shares for themselves. According to the commission, the sum used for purchasing the shares was described as a loan to some companies including, Guesstrade Services, Sentron Trading, Montrax Investico, Claremount Management Ltd., Trenton Trade, and others. In proof of its case against the accused persons, the EFCC called 12 witnesses who gave oral evidence. It also subpoenaed 6 others to present some documents which were admitted as exhibits by the court.

Presidency: Twitter suspension has reduced spread of fake news by PDP governors

The presidency says governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are sad over the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria, because it has affected the opposition party’s ability to spread “fake news”. On June 4, the federal government suspended the microblogging platform over claims that it is being used to threaten Nigeria’s peaceful coexistence. Reacting to the development, the PDP governors’ forum, in a communique on Monday, tackled the President Muhammadu Buhari administration over its decision to indefinitely suspend Twitter in Nigeria. “The mere ego of Mr President is not enough for such a drastic action that deprives millions of Nigerians of such an affordable means of expression and communication. We hope that this is not a harbinger or early warning signs of descent into dictatorship,” the PDP governors had said. Responding in a statement on Wednesday, Garba Shehu, presidential aide, said the communique issued by the PDP governors shows to Nigerians “why this party and its representatives should not be entrusted with national leadership of our country any time soon”. “The PDP grieves over the Federal Government’s action over Twitter – for it represents the curtailment of their ability to use the platform to spread fake news and invented stories to the detriment of community and good-neighbourliness between the peoples of Nigeria,” Shehu said. “The PDP Governors propose no solutions to any of our nation’s challenges in the face of COVID and global economic downturn: instead, they grasp for more money and mourn their lack of access to social media to spread falsehoods and hate. “Their statement is evidence, if any were needed, as to why the President and the APC ended the PDP’s one-party rule in 2015, were re-elected by an increased margin in 2019, and why their winning trend is set to continue far into the future.” The governors had also accused the federal government of not doing enough to improve the economy of the country. However, according to Shehu, the governors need to look inwards, especially as it relates to local government autonomy and addressing farmer-herder clashes in their domains. “When the governors claim a lack of federal institutions’ money pouring into their States’ coffers is an affront to democracy, constitutionalism, and federalism, they fail to mention the ugliest trend against the integrity of Nigeria comes by own hands with their refusal to support the Federal Government’s earnest desire to reinstate the local government as the third tier and finding a lasting solution to farmer-herder conflicts costing the nation lives and livestock,” he said. “This initiative brings rights and support for generations of all ages to bring solutions to challenges that different communities of our country have faced, but the PDP governors reject it – denying all Nigerians their constitutional right to live and work in any state of the Federation – preferring to appeal to ethnic division and hatred rather than support the first practical solution offered since independence. “Similarly, the governors appeal to each other for more involvement of States in mining and geophysical activities within their States. The question must be asked: ‘Why has this taken you so long?’ Such opportunities and States’ powers have been fully available since independence – yet only now the PDP realises it?”

FG has repaid $150m out of $2bn Chinese loan —Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday, said the Federal Government has repaid up to $150m out of the $2bn Chinese loan borrowed for rail construction. Amaechi spoke when he featured in Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme monitored by The PUNCH. The regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has been heavily criticised for borrowing billions of dollars from the Chinese government. However, speaking on Wednesday, the minister said the Buhari administration has only borrowed for the Kaduna-Abuja and the Lagos-Ibadan railways. When asked how much of the Chinese loans obtained that the Federal Government has repaid, Amaechi said, “The right ministry to respond to that question is the Ministry of Finance; they borrow and they repay but I think the last I heard about it, it was between a $100m to $150m repayment that we have done so far in the Kaduna-Abuja. “Don’t forget that we’ve not borrowed any money yet, the only money we borrowed is in the Kaduna-Abuja and Lagos-Ibadan. Lagos-Ibadan, what we borrowed is about $1.5bn though it has not matured for repayment, what has matured for repayment is the Kaduna-Abuja which is being repaid. “Nigerians think we borrow so much but the only projects we have borrowed so far is the Kaduna-Abuja where we borrowed $500m and the Lagos-Ibadan where we borrowed $1.5bn. So, that brings the total loan exposure for us in the Ministry of Transport to about $2bn as far as railway is concerned.” The minister also said the Chinese are still in charge of the rail services on the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan lines. According to him, the Chinese drive the trains and will hand over to Nigerians once major areas of operations are ticked.
