Anambra 2021: Activist calls for justice for Valentine Ozigbo

A social activist, Comrade Kennedy Iyere has appealed to the judiciary, especially the Appeal and Supreme courts, to ensure that Mr Valentine Ozigbo, an aspirant in Anambra governorship election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gets justice. Iyere, who is also the convener of Victory 4 Ozigbo Movement made the plea on Sunday, during an anti-corruption protest march/press conference in Awka, the Anambra State capital. While addressing the protesters, Iyere, affirmed that the Victory 4 Ozigbo Movement is an initiative of the civil society, driven under the Civil Society Committee for Anambra Election Security (CISCAES), an election integrity project of Youths Off The Street Initiative (YOTSI), the NGO he founded. ‌ He said the protest was an aftermath of the judgement delivered by Justice O.A Nwabunike. According to Iyere, Ozigbo is the authentic PDP candidate and winner of the party primary which was conducted by the national leadership of the party on the 6th June, 2021. He said by the establishment of the “Justice 4 Ozigbo Movement”, the eyes of Nigerians and other members of the international community will observe the way the Nigerian judiciary will play out its role in the ongoing legal battle between good and evil, stating that Valentine Ozigbo, represents everything good because his political ambition means well for Nigeria’s democracy. He further said that the plot to take over Anambra will never be allowed to succeed. He said this was the reason he formed the Civil Society Committee for Anambra Election Security (CISCAES), whose focus is to ensure that politicians, candidates, security agents, parties, INEC officials, judges and supporters of parties are compelled to play by the rules. According to him, the “rig and let’s meet in court” approach to elections will not work again in Anambra State.

Bakare condemns FG’s clampdown on agitators

Tunde Bakare, the overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, has condemned the clampdown on self-determination agitators in the country. According to THISDAY, Bakare said this during a sermon at his church in Lagos. The cleric said though he does not support any act of violence against people, Nigeria must realise that the agitations started as a result of lack of justice and equity. He said Sunday Adeyemo, a Yoruba nation agitator better known as Sunday Igboho, and Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), are not the problem of Nigeria, “I don’t support any act of violence, taking up arms against the country and killing people. Those are in the realm of criminality and anybody doing that must be brought to book,” Bakare said. “However, we must realise that what has given rise to the agitation is lack of justice and equity. When there is justice, when there is equity, agitation will die down. How can you be expending so much energy on Igboho and Kanu? Igboho and Kanu are not Nigeria’s problems. Nigeria must restructure and no one can stop that,” he declared. Kanu was arrested on June 25 and extradited to Nigeria to face trial for treasonable felony. Following his arrest, he was remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). His trial will continue today before a federal high court in Abuja. Igboho, on the other hand, will be appearing before a court in Cotonou on Monday. The Yoruba nation agitator was arrested with his wife at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Monday. He was arraigned before a judge at Cour De’appal De Cotonou last Thursday. The Nigerian government is seeking the extradition of the Yoruba nation agitator after he escaped from his Ibadan home when operatives of the DSS raided his house on July 1.

2021 WASSCE: Exam will hold in all states nationwide —WAEC

AMIDST rising waves of insecurity in the country, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said it has prepared well to hold the forthcoming school-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. The examination is billed to commence on August 16 and last for about six weeks with no fewer than 1.6 million students expected to participate nationwide. Giving the assurance in an interview with Nigerian Tribune at the weekend, the acting head of WAEC Nigeria, Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, said at the moment, the council does not foresee any reason the exam would not be held in any state. ‌ He said though the council is well aware of the serious security challenges, particularly in some states in the northern part of the country, all hands would be on deck to ensure the examination is conducted in a safe and friendly environment across the country. He explained that in the states where some schools have been closed down due to security issues, students of those schools have already registered in nearby schools that are in session. Speaking on examination malpractice, Ojijeogu warned candidates and parents as well as schools that have plans to cheat in the exam to have a rethink as the council would not give room for such an act in any of its centres. He also warned them to be wary of fraudsters who may claim to have leaked question papers of various subjects and may want to sell them through social media platforms ahead of exam, saying there is nothing like leaked question papers in WASSCE. He said it is only a trick to defraud lazy students of their parents’ hard-earned money. Ojijeogu said the only appeal the council would make again is for every candidate to study hard and according to the schemes of work as no question would be asked outside the syllabus. He said whoever is caught cheating or attempting to cheat or aiding malpractice in any form would certainly face the wrath of the law. He, however, pointed out that the exam would be conducted under strict compliance with COVID-19 guidelines and protocols.

Security alert in Abuja as Nnamdi Kanu faces trial today

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja will on Monday continue in the hearing of the criminal charge against the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafran (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in the criminal charges of terrorism and treasonable felony slammed against him by the Federal Government. The Department of Security Services (DSS), spearheading Kanu’s trial on behalf of the Federal Government, it was gathered, will provide adequate security at the Federal High Court, Abuja, the venue of the trial, to ward off the possible breakdown of order or unruly behaviour from any quarter during the trial. The coverage of Kanu’s trial, who was re-arrested in faraway Kenya, during a coordinated interception is restricted to few media houses as part of the security measures put in place by the management of the Federal High Court in Abuja and DSS to control crowds at the court premises The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) had, on June 29, 2021, announced the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu by joint security agencies on June 27, in a joint press briefing with DSS and the police. The IPOB leader, who was brought before the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, same day, told the court in the presence of heavily armed security operatives that his house was invaded by security men with his life seriously threatened and that, explained why he escaped out of the country The self acclaimed Biafran leader further stated that he would have been killed along with others on the day of the invasion if not for the wisdom he applied to jump out of the country. Kanu’s reaction was provoked by the information by the Federal Government through its counsel, Shuaib Labaran that Kanu ran out of the country, thereby, jumping the bail granted him by the court to escape trial. Labaran, thereafter applied to the court for an order to remand Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS). The Federal Government counsel told the court that the request became imperative because lawyers to Kanu were yet to be abreast of his re-arrest. Justice Nyako thereafter granted the request and ordered that Kanu be remanded in the custody of the DSS till July 26, 2021 for continuation of his trial. Although the continuation of the trial of the IPOB leader was earlier slated for October 20, 2021, it was however brought down to July 26, 2021 for his lawyers to appear for his defence. It will be recalled that after over two years of manhunt, the Federal Government rearrested the Biafran leader in Kenya and was immediately brought to Nigeria for the continuation of his trial. Nnamdi Kanu, who was earlier put on trial on charges bothering on terrorism, treasonable felony and sponsorship of unlawful organization had jumped bail granted him by the federal high court and escaped from Nigeria shortly after the bail was perfected for him by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe who volunteered to stand surety for him. Justice Nyako who granted him bail on the ground of his Ill health, had revoked the bail on March 28, 2019, and issued a bench warrant for his arrest in any part of Nigeria. Credit: TribuneOnline
