BREAKING: Gunmen attack Kaduna community, injure 3 Policemen

Three policemen attached to the Mararaban Jos Divisional Police Station have been shot by gunmen who invaded the community at 11.30 pm on Friday. The gunmen attacked the police station in the area where they shot three policemen, Daily Trust gathered. According to a resident of the community, Fatima Mohammed, the attack on the police station alerted other members of the community. “Immediately we started hearing gunshots, we began to make calls to alert the security agents. Luckily, the gunmen did not come into the community. “Another thing is that when they came, it was drizzling, then the rain came down heavily, maybe that is what caused them to retreat. “After the incident, we took the injured policemen to a local hospital in the area for treatment. “The community has been under the siege of kidnappers and many residents have been kidnapped silently and ransom is being paid. “Just a day to Sallah, three women who have been in captivity for over 30 days, were released after a ransom was paid and because of this. Many residents are fleeing for fear of being kidnapped,” she said. She, however, said normalcy had returned to the area, as people were seen going about their businesses. The Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Muhammad Jalige, confirmed the incident and the shooting of the three policemen. Six days ago, bandits killed a villager and abducted seven people, including three women at Angular Gajere village under Kutemashi Ward in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. They also rustled over 50 cows from the same village.

Candidate of the Young Progressives Party for the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, says he has concluded arrangements to start digital capturing of all his supporters in the state. The statement explained that the digital capturing exercise would be coordinated by the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, while the YPP National Secretariat would handle the membership registration. It read in part, “The exercise which is billed to take place along with the party registration is geared towards the actualisation of his zeal to have the personal data base of his teeming supporters and lovers of the Ifeanyi Ubah brand across the state. “Each supporter will provide some vital information like occupation ( if any) , skill, and business interests among others. “This is to enable the Senator to have direct impact on as many of his supporters as possible and as the need arises in line with his grassroot approach to human capital and infrastructural development.” Ubah enjoined indigenes and other residents of Anambra State who are desirous of being part of his drive towards a greater Anambra to key into the exercise and register with the party as well as the foundation

Network providers assured us of 100% coverage’ — INEC insists on e-transmission of results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says all network providers in Nigeria have assured of 100 percent coverage for electronic transmission of results. TheCable had reported how the national assembly blocked the electronic transmission of election results in the electoral act amendment bill. The bill was eventually passed at the senate, but with a clause allowing the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to certify national coverage, followed by an approval by the national assembly before INEC can transmit results electronically. The NCC had also stated that only 50% of polling units in Nigeria have network coverage for e-transmission of results when it appeared before a house of representatives panel. Speaking during a programme on African Independent Television (AIT), on Friday, Nick Dazang, INEC’s director of publicity and voter education, said the position of the NCC on poor network coverage is not tenable. “In January 2018, INEC approached NCC that it wants a technological-driven commission and both have been working closely to deliver free, fair and credible elections in our country for the benefit of our citizens,” Dazang said. “They are also aware that two network providers, MTN and Airtel have assisted JAMB conduct their examinations across Nigeria. So, INEC is still wondering why NCC has suddenly made a U-turn that there is not enough network coverage in every part of Nigeria. “I am convinced that if INEC was given the chance to appear before the national assembly alongside NCC, the commission would have told the distinguished senators and honourable members that all the network providers in Nigeria have assured INEC that network coverage is 100 percent across the country. “There is no website that is not prone to attack by hackers even in the most advanced nations but Nigerians should be rest assured that INEC has what it takes to fight off hackers and the commission is well prepared to safeguard its websites against hackers. “I also want NASS members to think like statesmen. They should think about the future, not about the next election. Let us always look at the bigger picture. It pains INEC that beneficiaries of transparent elections are in the forefront of working to weaken the commission by asking INEC to share its powers with other agencies or take permission from another agency before performing its statutory functions guaranteed by the constitution of Nigeria.” Dazang asked the national assembly to revisit the issue and approve the unconditional electronic transmission of results.

Laycon reconciles with Erica hours before BBNaija six kicks-off

Few hours before kick-off of the 2021 edition of the BBNaija reality TV show, Lockdown edition winner, Laycon and disqualified ex-housemate, Erica Nlewedim have reconciled. The reality TV stars seemed to have buried the hatchet and embraced a cordial relationship again. The two shared a short video wearing a smile. Laycon and Erica shared the videos on their Instagram Stories with the hashtag ‘We are good’. The reconciliation between Laycon and Erica is coming many months after their famous fallout in the Lockdown edition of Big Brother Naija. Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the host of the reality TV show failed to reconcile the duo when they featured on the BBNaija reunion show. Laycon and Erica started as friends and expressed deep feelings for one another until Kiddwaya came into the picture making it a love triangle. The once cordial relationship between the two ex-housemates later turned sour after Erica shunned Laycon’s love emotions to be with Kiddwaya. This led to a huge scuffle that saw Erica getting disqualified from the show. Since then, the two reality TV stars have not been cordial.

Emir of Daura: Things would be difficult without Buhari

Umar Faruk Umar, the Emir of Daura, says Nigeria is “lucky” to have Muhammadu Buhari as president at this point in time. The monarch said things “would have been very difficult” if Buhari was not at the helm of affairs. He spoke on Friday when the president visited him at his palace in Daura, Kastina state. “Your visit to Daura reflects your good character which we are very proud of,” he said to the president. “I can assure you that men, women, children, marketers and artisans are always pleased to receive you and they will be praying for you. “Today is not for speeches but for appreciation. We have been blessed so much as a community because you are the leader of the country. You have brought honour to our domain. “As a community, we have benefited a lot with increased traffic of people and organisations coming to help us here. We know it’s because of you. “May the good Lord always go before you and behind you, and remove all obstacles from your path. “Nigeria is lucky to have you at this time. I am not saying it to please you, but if you had not been in power it would have been very difficult. I doubt if we will be here today.” The Emir said the president must remain focused on getting results, particularly in securing the country.

Abuja council slams N100,000 levy on firms using generators, machines

Establishments in Abuja have lamented the N100, 000 emission permit levied on business operators by the Abuja Municipal Area Council for the emission of gas from generators and other heavy duty machines. They described the levy as outrageous and capable of sending them out of business. In a letter that has gone viral on the Internet which was signed by the Head of Environment, AMAC, Ahmed Haruna, and addressed to a bakery, it was stated that the levy was for the discharge of harmful substances into the air, water and land. Haruna said failure to comply with the directive could lead to arrest of the bakery operator. The letter read, “The management of Abuja Municipal Area Council Environment Services Department (ESD) Bodies, wishes to notify you of levy/fees due to the Abuja Area Council for Gaseous Emission Permit Limit. “This includes the discharge of harmful hazardous substances into the air or the land and water in Nigeria by the activities of industries, warehouses, banks, either from generators or heavy-duty, drilling, production, construction and manufacturing equipment, filling stations, etc.” He said the directive was in line with the provision of Section (2C) of the fourth schedule of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended under the function of the Local Government Authority and Federal Environmental Protection Agency Act part (iii) Section 25 which establish the Local Council Authority to regulate, enforce and collect levies for the interest of public health importance. But the chairman, Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Abuja chapter, Ishaq Abdulkareem, dared the council, saying that members would not obey the directive. He said, “Is it our fault that the power supply is unstable and we have decided to look for an alternative? We are still contending with the high cost of raw materials and they are asking us to pay this much as a levy? “That means they want to kick us out of business. The directive is a politically motivated one. They specifically stated bakery. Are we the only ones emitting smokes? Let them take their directives and arrest residents for using generating sets or other industries, only then would we oblige.” Meanwhile, the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry has asked the council authorities to suspend the N100,000 levy imposed on bakeries and other businesses in the FCT. The President, Al-Mujtaba Abubakar, in a statement on Friday, said imposing new levies despite the country’s high inflation rate would increase the cost of doing business. “We call on the leadership of Abuja Municipal Area Council as well as other government agencies to suspend the planned imposition of generator and equipment taxes, as this is inconsistent with the Federal Government’s programmes to create an attractive business climate for business owners. “Imposition of new taxes like the generator and equipment taxes will not only be an additional burden to be borne by business owners, it will accelerate the collapse of more businesses, deepen unemployment and further hike inflation rate in the country,” he said.

Don’t Need Your Cheques, Buhari Tells Contractors

I President Muhammadu Buhari has asked those who are beneficiaries of government patronage to always engage in corporate social responsibility, instead of seeking to favour individuals with gifts. Buhari spoke in Daura, Katsina State, Friday, when he visited the Emir of Daura, Dr Umar Faruk Umar. “I don’t want your cheque. Go and assist our communities instead of trying to return kickbacks to public officers.” “We don’t want cheques from anyone or organisation as returns or influence of any kind. Let them remember their Corporate Social Responsibilities,” Garba Shehu, his media aide, quoted to have said. The President noted that he would love to visit Daura more frequently, but for the high cost of presidential movements and exposing security personnel to the weather, assuring that his heart remains with the people. “We are known for farming and I have my farm here. I could come every two weeks and no one can stop me. But the cost to the movement is high.” Unity The President said the grace of God had kept Nigeria together as a country in spite of differences that led to a 30 months civil war “We want to thank God always for keeping us together as a country. From January 15, 1966, the country was thrown into political crisis. We had a 30 months civil war that resulted in the loss of about a million lives. “We still thank God for keeping us together. We remain grateful to all those who showed interest in our unity and progress. May God continue to bless them,” he added. The President, who recalled fond memories of visiting the Palace as a military Head of State, expressed happiness that the warmth and hospitality of the traditional institution had been sustained over the years. In his remarks, the Emir of Daura, thanked the President for always creating time to visit his hometown and the palace despite the tight schedule. “Your visit to Daura reflects your good character which we are very proud of. I can assure you that men, women, children, marketers and artisans are always pleased to receive you and they will be praying for you.” At the meeting, the Emir publicly announced conferment of the title of Talban Daura on Yusuf Buhari, son of President Buhari. He said a date would be announced for the turbaning ceremony of the President’s son, which might likely be before his wedding. The Emir also announced creation of a District in the community of the President, with headquarters in Dimurkol. He said the turbaning of young Buhari and creation of the District was to further extend and deepen the long relationship between the Palace and the family. He said the decision was in agreement with the kingmakers in Daura Emirate Council.

Aregbesola Asks Governors To Sign Death Warrant Of Over 3,000 Condemned Inmates

The Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has asked governors to sign the death warrant of 3,008 inmates on death row at custodial facilities across the country. Aregbesola said this in Osogbo, Osun State, while inaugurating the newly constructed headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS in the State, on Friday. He lamented that jail congestion is the major headache of the Service, saying that the entire national custodial facilities with a maximum capacity for 57,278 inmates currently has a total population of 68,747 inmates, made up of 67,422 males and 1,325 females. He also noted that 50,992 inmates, representing 74 per cent of the total population of inmates in the nation’s custodial centres were awaiting trial inmates while only 17,755 inmates which is a mere 26 per cent were the actual convicts. Aregbesola said: “There are presently 3,008 condemned criminals waiting for their date with the executioners in our meagre custodial facilities. This consists of 2,952 males and 56 females. “In cases where an appeal has been exhausted and the convicts are not mounting any challenge to their conviction, the state should go ahead, to do the needful and bring closure to their cases.” Aregbesola, however, said the state governors could, in the alternative, set some of the condemned inmates free on compassionate ground, especially those who have grown old on account of the long time they have been in custody and those that are terminally ill. He added that those that have been reformed and demonstrated exceptionally good behaviour could also be released or commute their sentences to life or specific terms in jail. He said all these could be done by putting in place a system of amnesty and prerogative of mercy that would review all cases of convicts on death row periodically. He said more than 5,000 inmates were set free during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the federal government was building a 3,000 high-capacity custodial centre in Kano and Rivers States as well as Abuja. He said this would be extended to the six geo-political zones in the country and that it would ease congestion considerably and enhance the capacity to manage the facilities for corrections.
