Two killed as Amotekun, hoodlums battle in Ibadan

TWO men were shot dead by officers of Amotekun Corps at Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early hours of Tuesday while one other sustained a gunshot injury. The deceased persons were identified as Ishola Abdullahi and Rasheed Mudashiru, while the name of the injured was given as Alaba Isah. Narrating the incident to the Nigerian Tribune, Ibrahim, the younger brother of Abdullahi, said youths in the neighborhood decided to come together at Ajanla area, close to Liberty Stadium junction, to mark the eve of Sallah celebration. “We had a Disc Jockey (DJ) playing music while we were having fun. When the petrol in the generator we were using was exhausted, we tried to get a refill to buy. In the process, my brother, Abdullahi who was sleeping, woke up and followed us to the gathering. Not up to five minutes after, the Amotekun operatives came and started shooting from the back of the patrol van which brought them. “There was no quarrel or fight. We were all young men in the neighbourhood just enjoying Sallah eve. Soldiers and police passed by and greeted us. The Amotekun van approached from Liberty Stadium junction on the J-Allen/Molete Road. All of us went in different directions when we heard the shooting. “By the time we came out when the gunshots had subsided, we saw the body of Rasheed, who had died on the spot. We didn’t see my brother in good time until we went to a street in search of him. “We saw him shot at the back and took him to a native doctor to extract the pellets but it did not work out because they had stayed long in his body.” Also speaking, Abdullahi’s half brother, who was acting as a father to him because of age difference, Alhaji Olayiwola Sulu Ishola, a.k.a. Alhaji Salala, said: “Abdullahi was like my son as he was my half brother from my father’s last wife. “I was not around but was called on phone that Amotekun shot him and two others before fleeing the scene. “Boys in our neighbourhood were celebrating Sallah eve and enjoying themselves with music, drinks and fun. They said even the Operation Burst personnel and the police passed by and waved at them, but on the arrival of Amotekun officials, they started shooting. “Immediately the boys heard the gunshots, they started running to avoid being hit. That was how my blood relation and one other person were killed, while a third person sustained gunshot injuries.” He said that Abdullahi and the other deceased person, Rasheed, had been buried by their families according to Islamic rites, while the third person was taken to a native doctor to extract pellets from his arm and thigh. Abdullahi, aged 25, had a child before his death. Also narrating his experience, Isah, also aged 25, told Nigerian Tribune that the incident occurred at about 3:00 a.m. “We were at a party at Ajanla, making merry when Amotekun operatives came and started shooting. I had my back towards them. We scampered into safety but I felt my arm being weak, not knowing that pellets had penetrated it. My thigh was also hit. I was taken to a place to extract the bullets locally,” he stated. However, when contacted, the Ibadan South West Local Government Area coordinator of Amotekun, Sikiru Apanpa, told Nigerian Tribune that the operatives responded to gunshots received from the group members who also threw bottles at them when they were sighted. Apanpa also said that the incident occurred at Liberty Stadium junction, not Ajanla area as narrated by the group members. According to him, the Amotekun operatives were at the junction where they met two of the group members on the road with guns. He said that on sighting the Amotekun personnel, they started shouting ‘ojo! ojo!!’, a code name given to police officers, with the thought that the Amotekun van was that of police since the headlights were switched off. “Others came from the dark and started shooting at us, as well as throwing bottles, which made us to respond. “Some Amotekun Corps members had been killed during such incidents so that made us to be on alert. “We were at Foko area and we saw those holding party there, and we passed by without any trouble. We had an issue with someone who fired a shot and seized his gun. But we returned the gun when the community told us that he was a security guard. “We were also at Ring Road and saw another party going on; there was no trouble. Why would we counter-attack those at Liberty Stadium junction if we were not attacked? The incident occurred at Liberty junction, not Ajanla area,” the coordinator explained.

2023: We Will Soon Pick Consensus Presidential Candidate – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that, at the appropriate time, it will come up with a consensus and agreeable presidential candidate that will fly its flag in 2023. Sen. He said unlike the opposition PDP, the APC was a disciplined party, noting that the former was just being haunted by its past. Akpanudoedehe recalled the third term agenda of the PDP while it was in power, pointing out that the APC would surprise it with the outcome of its planned congresses scheduled to commence on July 31. “After our congresses and the National Convention, we will shock them [PDP] by bringing a consensus and an agreeable candidate that will fly the flag of the party come 2023. “APC has no third term agenda like PDP. What we are doing now is to stabilise the party and not allow individual ambitions to derail President Buhari’s administration,” he said. (NAN)

Police deny having two kidnapped DELSU students in custody

Authorities of the Delta State Police Command have denied arresting two students of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, who were kidnapped by hoodlums and later released. Some online media outfits have been inundated with publications as to the arrest and detention of the two undergraduates, Mr Divine Omajuwa of the Geology department and Miss Hamza Hussiena Jennifer of the Pharmacology department shortly after their freedom. Recall that the duo were reportedly kidnapped while returning to Abraka in a Lexus Jeep from Warri at about 9:30 p.m, on Sunday, July 11, 2021. ‌ Their colleague, Mr Odje Stephen of the Department of Medical Biochemistry, who was in the private vehicle with them, was not that lucky as he was shot dead during the ambush along Oria – Abraka road. Mr Omajuwa and Miss Hussiena were later released by their abductors, on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, with the former intimating the world how they were abducted and released. Counsel to Omajuwa, Barr. Choice Emoese, who confirmed the arrest and detention of her clients at the anti-kidnapping unit of the state police command, Asaba, reportedly said that the students were scheduled for a medical examination following their ordeal in the kidnappers’ den when they were arrested in Abraka and transferred to Asaba. Barr. Emoese further disclosed that the family of the deceased student, Odje Stephen had alleged a case of murder and not kidnapping, as reported, adding that investigators had interrogated the students and wondered why the police are denying them bail. However, reacting to the arrest, the command’s acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, vehemently denied the allegation, wondering why such unfounded narrative is being peddled around. “They were not arrested. I don’t know where they get such stories from. They should come to Asaba and check if the duo are in our custody. “Yes, at one point, they were invited to give the police some info that could help in apprehending the kidnap suspects. “And thereafter they were allowed to go. Maybe that’s what people are insinuating as an arrest,” Edafe told our reporter, on Tuesday night.

We did not ignore the issue but it was not the main issue we discussed. “We need to be at the forefront of what is happening in this country? We are going to make wider consultations whereby individuals, groups, and others will be carried along to put things in the right direction. “ We cut across the Southwest states at the meeting. We are going to make wider consultations with monarchs. Stop misleading people, Imo Assembly tells PDP lawmakers

The Imo State House of Assembly has blasted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers, warning them to stop misleading the public with falsehoods and unwholesome utterances. The lawmaking body insisted that the recent suspensions of six legislators was legal, constitutional and necessary aimed at preserving peace, stability and ensure the progress of the legislative arm in the state. In a statement issued in Owerri, on Tuesday, in reaction to a media report credited to some PDP minority caucus in the house, led by the Minority Leader, Hon. Anyadike Nwosu, the House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Information, Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Johnson Duru accused the PDP lawmakers of behaving in a manner unexpected of parliamentarians. ‌ He said; “some of the PDP lawmakers deserve to be recalled by their constituents for misrepresentation, ineffectiveness and lack of leadership acumen.” Duru, representing Ideator South State Constituency, maintained that PDP lawmakers were not deserving to be lawmakers, insisting that a good number of them should be recalled by their constituents for reasons of ineptitude, truancy and lack of decorum. The Imo Assembly spokesman lauded the Speaker for his proactive leadership, adding that for the first time since the inauguration of the 9th House, the house had enjoyed stability because of stability put in place by Emeziem. He said: “The house has enjoyed robust debates to the extent that the opposition members have on more than one occasion passed a vote of confidence on the speaker.” Duru said that the speaker had been on the heel of the governor on any issues that bothered the house welfare, adding that as far as the house was concerned, the Executive is purely separated from the legislature and the proper checks and balances have been maintained. He said: “It is disheartening to read on print media an insinuation by the PDP lawmakers that Imo Speaker is acting Uzodinma’s script. The question that begs for an answer is “ WHAT IS UZODINMA’s SCRIPT”. The lawmaker said that If Uzodinma’s script is to ensure that good and durable infrastructures are put in place in Imo state, then he concurred with the PDP lawmakers. “If Uzodinma’s script is to ensure that Imo is rescued, restored and restructured, then, what is wrong in being part of that script? If Izodinma’s script is to ensure that the legislative arm has financial autonomy, then what is wrong in acting along with him?” Hon Duru pointed out that the lawmakers who had the interest of the state at heart would not seat and watch a group of disgruntled legislators wake up to add to the state of anarchy even at the wake of insecurity in the state with banditry and unknown gunmen, adding that they would vehemently kick against that. NDLEA arrests two women for trafficking 296,000 tablets of illicit drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two women, Chioma Afam, 36, and Peace Chidinma Caleb, 22, for allegedly trying to smuggle 296,000 tablets of Diazepam and Exol-5 from Onitsha, Anambra State to Gombe state. Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Wednesday, said Afam used multiple identities and wore hijabs to evade security scrutiny. He said: “Chioma who uses multiple names such as Amina, Uzoamaka and Ifunaya to cover her criminal activities was arrested on Saturday 17th July 2021 along with the 22-year-old Peace Chidinma Caleb who also wears a hijab as a cover for her nefarious activities during routine checks and profiling of inward vehicles into Makurdi, the Benue state capital. Their vehicle coming from Onitsha, Anambra State was intercepted along Makurdi – Alliade road while heading to Gombe State via Makurdi. “A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of 43kilograms of Diazepam and 33kg of Exol-5, both weighing 76 kilograms with a total of Two Hundred and Ninety-Six Thousand (296,000) tablets packed in four large ‘Ghana must go’ bags. Curiously, the two interstate drug traffickers have rebuffed efforts to take pictures with the exhibits without wearing their hijab.” Babafemi also said the Ondo Command of the agency on Sunday 18th July 2021 intercepted one Olu Ameh, a commercial motorcycle rider with 465 kilograms of cannabis Sativa along Ijagba-Ute road in the Ose local government area of the state. “The illicit substance was said to have been bought from one Joseph in Ago-Akure, Akure North LGA and being conveyed to the buyer, a certain Egbonwon at Ijagba village in Ose LGA,” the statement reads.

FG can’t intimidate us, Igboho’s aide says as activist spends second night in Cotonou cell

The Federal Government can’t intimidate Yoruba Nation agitators, Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for embattled activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has said. Koiki made this known in a Facebook Live address on Wednesday morning as his principal spends his second night in a police cell in Cotonou, Benin Republic. “We are not going to allow the government to intimidate us. We are not going to allow the Federal Government and politicians to deceive us. “We must remain strong and remain calm as we get freedom for Chief Sunday Igboho and the Yoruba race,” he said. The PUNCH had earlier reported that Igboho and his wife, who is a German citizen, were arrested on Monday night at the Cadjèhoun airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, one of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries in the West African sub-region. Igboho was arrested while he tried to catch a flight to Germany with his wife. The activist and his wife were said to have been arrested by INTERPOL at the behest of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Lead counsel for Igboho, Yomi Alliyu ( SAN), described as inhuman, the treatment his client was being subjected to in the custody of the police in Benin Republic. He said, “They chained him in the cell where they put him in Cotonou. There was a fracas at the airport yesterday when he was arrested. They hit him in the hand and that same hand was handcuffed, he is in pains and he was weeping like a child when I called, I heard him. “The wife too was put in a separate cell but they didn’t chain the wife. He was crying, the wife was crying too cease he was writhing in pains seriously. We only pray they don’t pay anybody to kill him. You don’t out somebody in cell and still chain the person. The PUNCH learnt that Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has been pushing for the extradition of Igboho and his wife to Nigeria. But Alliyu argued that “The Extradition Treaty of 1984 between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana and Republic of Benin excluded political fugitives. It also states that where the fugitive will not get justice because of discrimination and/or undue delay in prosecution the host country should not release the fugitive. “Now, Article 20 of African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights to which the four countries are signatories made agitation for self-determination a fundamental right to be protected by all countries. This made Chief Sunday Adeyemo a political offender who cannot be deported and/or extradited by the good people of the Republic of Benin for any reason.” The senior advocate, who described the arrest of his client as shocking, urged the government of Germany, Benin Republic and the international community “to rise up and curb the impunity of the Nigerian Government by refusing any application for extradition of our Client who already has application before the International Criminal Court duly acknowledged”. The Nigerian secret police had raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence in the Soka area on July 1, 2021, arrested about 12 of his aides and killed two of them in a gun duel. The Federal Government of Nigeria had placed the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service on alert to stop Igboho from leaving the country.

Lawyer: Igboho is in serious pain — he was crying when we spoke

Yomi Alliyu, counsel to Sunday Adeyemo, a youth leader better known as Sunday Igboho, says his client wept like a child when they spoke over the phone. Alliyu, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told the Punch that he spoke with Igboho on Tuesday night. The youth leader was arrested on Monday in Benin Republic on his way to Germany. He was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS) after his home was raided ahead of a “Yoruba nation” rally. According to the secret police, guns and charms were recovered from his home during the raid that left two of his supporters dead. The lawyer said the authorities in Cotonou subjected Igboho to inhumane treatment, adding that he is in “serious” pain. “They chained him in the cell where they put him in Cotonou. There was a fracas at the airport yesterday when he was arrested. They hit him in the hand and that same hand was handcuffed, he is in pain and he was weeping like a child when I called, I heard him,” he said. “The wife too was put in a separate cell but they didn’t chain the wife. He was crying, the wife was crying too. He was writhing in pains seriously. We only pray they don’t pay anybody to kill him. You don’t put somebody in a cell and still chain the person. “You know he sustained an injury and they didn’t take him to hospital for treatment. We heard that he is appearing in court tomorrow but I don’t know whether that will carry it out.” The SAN said the extradition treaty of 1984 between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana and Benin Republic excludes political fugitives. “Now, Article 20 of African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights to which the four countries are signatories made agitation for self-determination a fundamental right to be protected by all countries,” the lawyer said. “This made chief Sunday Adeyemo a political offender who cannot be deported and/or extradited by the good people of the Republic of Benin for any reason.”
