OPEC+ agrees to increase oil production by 400,000/bpd

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies on Sunday agreed to increase global oil production by 400,000 barrels per day. OPEC and its Russia-led oil-producing allies, OPEC+, agreed to unleash barrels of bottled-up crude over the next two years by committing to restore all of the cuts they made at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The oil cartel announced the new development as economies pick up and crude demand recovers across the globe. In a statement issued at the end of the 19th OPEC and non-OPEC ministerial meeting on Sunday, the oil cartel said the new adjustment will take effect from August until December 2021. “In view of current oil market fundamentals and the consensus on its outlook, the Meeting resolved to reaffirm the Framework of the Declaration of Cooperation, signed on 10 December 2016 and further endorsed in subsequent meetings, including on 12 April 2020,” OPEC said. “Extend the decision of the 10th OPEC and non-OPEC Ministerial Meeting (April 2020) until the 31st of December 2022. “Adjust upward their overall production by 0.4 mb/d on a monthly basis starting August 2021 until phasing out the 5.8 mb/d production adjustment, and in December 2021 assess market developments and participating countries’ performance.” The organisation said it would continue to adhere to the mechanism to hold monthly OPEC and non-OPEC ministerial meetings for the entire duration of the declaration of cooperation, in order to assess market conditions and decide on production level adjustments for the following month. The group said it agreed to new production allocations from May 2022 after Saudi Arabia and others agreed to a United Arab Emirates (UAE) request that had threatened the plan. It also agreed to “adjust, effective 1st of May 2022, the baseline for the calculations of the production adjustments according to the attached table.” Robin Mills, chief executive of Dubai-based consulting firm Qamar Energy, told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday that the deal is “good for consumers in the short term.” However, there are expectations that price pressure would remain as demand builds, he added.

Winners’ Chapel sacked me for failing to generate enough income -Pastor

Pastor Peter Godwin, a cleric with the Living Faith Church International, popularly known as Winners Chapel, says the church sacked him and about 40 other pastors in Ekiti State for failing to grow their respective parishes. The PUNCH, however, learnt that the figure may be much higher than 40 nationwide. In a letter that has been trending on social media, which is dated June 25, 2021 and signed by the Executive Secretary of the church, Adebisi Aboluwade, the pastors were asked to vacate their official accommodation and hand over their identity cards to their respective area pastors. One of the letters reads in part, “Consequent upon the recent performance reviews which revealed that your church growth index falls below expectations. “Please be informed that your services as a pastor in charge are no longer required from this commission with immediate effect. “You are to vacate the official accommodation (where applicable) and hand over all properties of the ministry in your custody, including your staff identity card to the area pastor before departure. “May you find grace for a new beginning. Peace.” In a trending video, Pastor Godwin, who claimed to be one of the pastors affected in Ekiti State, said he was employed on August 28, 2020. He claimed that he was invited with about 40 of his colleagues by the state pastor on July 1, 2021, but was sacked for failing to grow the revenue of the church. The pastor said that, on July 1, he received a call that the state pastor wanted to see him, and that he was surprised to see about 40 other pastors when he arrived. Godwin said, “When I got there, I saw other pastors too, over 40 of them. So, I joined them. “A few minutes later, we were [each] issued a letter. I opened the content of the letter to see what was there and I saw that it was a sack letter. “So, I called the management the next day to find out what happened since I wasn’t involved in any dubious activity or evil act. I was told by the management that the church doesn’t operate at a loss. “They also told me that the total income that is being generated from my station should be able to cater for my welfare and accommodation, so as a result of low income, I’m hereby dismissed.” It was learnt that the church was working on a statement for an official response. A source within the church, however, told The PUNCH that the sacking of the pastors had nothing to do with money; rather, the source said, it involved membership growth. “As indicated in the letter, pastors were sacked for failing to grow membership, which is a key aspect of the ministry. “It had nothing to do with money and nowhere in any of the letters of disengagement was it stated that it was about money,” the source said.

13 Policemen killed in Zamfara attack

Bandits on Sunday killed 13 policemen and three others in an attack on Kurar Mota community in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Residents told our correspondent that the armed men had earlier attempted to invade Magami, a community located 50km south of Gusau, the state capital, but were repelled by soldiers. “They withdrew after they were overpowered by the soldiers there. They then rode to a community along Magami – Dankurmi – Dangulbi road and killed one person and torched four shops.” “Thereafter, they moved to Kurar Mota community and attacked the police formation near the township clinic. The criminals then dashed into the forest” “The slain officers and the injured ones were conveyed to Gusau in a convoy of police vehicles this afternoon. I saw several police vehicles move towards the area,” a resident identified as Kabir Dansada, said. The spokesman of the state police command SP Muhammad Shehu promised to get back to our reporter but had not done so as of the time of filing this report.

Presidency: Kukah’s claim that bandits attack only Christian schools is totally false

The presidency says the claim by Matthew Kukah, Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, that only Christian schools are affected by insecurity is false. In his address to the United States Congress Commission, Kukah had criticised the Buhari administration for failing to address insecurity. He also accused Buhari of showing preference to people of his religion, which according to him, has worsened the level of rivalry between Christians and Muslims. But reacting in a statement on Sunday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, said Kukah is trying to sow discord and strife among Nigerians. Shehu also described Kukah’s claim that only Christian schools are being targeted by bandits or terrorists as untrue. “With due respect to the esteemed position he holds, the Bishop’s assertion that only Christian schools are being targeted by bandits or terrorists is not supported by the facts on the ground,” he said. “It is sad to say but also true that victims of crime, kidnapping, banditry and terrorism cut across all strata of the society. Sad but true that Kankara students in Katsina State were stolen by bandits of the same Islamic faith as those they took away. “The same may be true of those who are still holding the 134 students of the Islamic School at Tegina in Niger State. The nation witnessed the sad incident of the female students abducted by bandits at Jangebe in Zamfara State and the over 100 predominantly Muslim students of the Federal Government Girls College Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State who are currently in captivity — and the nation’s security agencies are hard at work to release them unharmed. “The attack on Christian students is sad and unacceptable; so also is the abduction of students of other faiths. The claim that only Christian schools are being targeted is totally untrue.” According to the presidential spokesman, it is unfortunate and disappointing for citizens of Nigeria to bear witness to “one of their churchmen” castigating their country in front of representatives of a foreign parliament. “Only this government has put forward the first and singular plan in nearly a century to address herder-farmer challenges — a fact recognised by international NGOs, including the International Crisis Group. To declare to a foreign audience that this government does nothing is an incredible falsehood,” Shehu said. “There is no bias in this government when the president is northern and Muslim, the vice president southern and Christian, and the cabinet equally balanced between the two religions. “But neither is there anything in our Constitution to state that political posts must be apportioned according to ethnicity or faith. “It takes a warped frame of mind for a critic to believe ethnicity is of primary importance in public appointments. It is yet more troubling to hear a churchman isolating one group for criticism purely on ethnic lines.” The presidential spokesman advised Nigerians to live in harmony, despite their religious differences. He said no one gains but the evil doers, “when we divide our ranks according to ethnicity and religion in confronting them”. “The bandit, kidnapper and terrorist are the enemies of the people who should be confronted in unison,” he added. Meanwhile, this not the first time Kukah will tackle the presidency over issues of security and national development. In his Easter message earlier in the year, Kukah described Nigeria as a “killing field” under the Buhari administration, saying both the government and the citizens have become helpless as criminals continue to cause havoc in parts of the country. But the presidency tackled Kukah, saying “he did not speak like a man of God”.

Why We Voted For E-Transmission Of Results With Conditions – Senate President

justify the position taken by the Senate on the electronic transmission of election results. The Senate on Thursday, while considering the Electoral Act 2010 Amendment Bill, voted that “The Commission(INEC) may consider the electronic transmission of results, provided the national coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by the National Communications Commission (NCC) and approved by the National Assembly.” Lawan explained that the Upper Chamber voted the way it did in defense of about half of the Nigerian voters whose votes may not be counted with immediate deployment or application of electronic transmission of election results. The Senate President spoke to journalists at the weekend while on a constituency visit to his Yobe North Senatorial District. The Senate President spoke to journalists at the weekend while on a constituency visit to his Yobe North Senatorial District. READ ALSO: Eid-El-Kabir: IGP Assures Nigerians Of Sustained Efforts At Improving Security Asked to comment on the passage of the Electoral Act 2010 Amendment Bill, Lawan said: “I’m happy that we have been able to pass the amendment even though some people are complaining of what we have passed in the Senate and probably what the House of Representatives has also passed. “When the majority of Senators voted against immediate application or deployment of electronic transmission of results from the polling units, to the ward, to the local government, states and federal, they didn’t say they do not believe in electronic transmission (of election results). “All of us in the Senate, 109 of us, believe that at one point, our electoral process must deploy electronic transmission so that it eases and enhances the electoral process and give it more credibility and integrity. “But you see, when you have not reached that stage where you could deploy the electronic transmission from every part of the country, then you have to be very careful. And no matter what anybody may say, you cannot have about 50 percent of Nigerian voters not participating or not getting their votes counted in elections and say it doesn’t matter, that we have to start the electronic transmission. “We know the evils of not transmitting results electronically but compare the evils of electronically transmitting just half of the electoral votes from Nigerians and say you have elected a President with 50 percent only. “And others have voted but their results or their votes could not be electronically transmitted. This is disenfranchising Nigerians and we are not going to support this kind of thing because essentially, we are supposed to be fair to every part of Nigeria and when we voted, every part of Nigeria voted for and against(the amendment). “What I mean here is that you have Senators from the northern part of Nigeria who voted for electronic transmission. Maybe that is their belief or their environment is ready for electronic transmission. And you have Senators from the southern part of Nigeria who voted against the immediate deployment of electronic transmission but they support that the electronic transmission of results should be allowed after certain conditions are met and the conditions are simple: The National Communication Commission(NCC) had provided the technical information that only NCC could give – that only about 50 percent of the Nigerian environment, the polling units, in the country could possibly have their results electronically transmitted. “So what happens to the other 50 percent. So we believe that all of us in the Senate were aiming at the same target but chose to go through different routes and that is why in my concluded remarks in the Senate after the debate and voting, I said there was no Victor, no Vanquish because we all meant well. “And for those Nigerians who still feel that the electronic transmission should have just been allowed to take effect, I said well, this is how democracy works. Democracy is to allow those minority views to be expressed and democracy provides that the majority views will always prevail.” The Senate President faulted some media reports that insinuated that only the APC Senators voted against the immediate application of the electronic transmission of results. He said the votes cast on either side of the subject matter cut across party lines and regional divides. “In this respect, it was not just APC. I have seen it reported in the media that only APC Senators voted against the immediate deployment of electronic transmission. “There are PDP Senators who voted against that but it appears that some people want to target APC Senators. There were PDP Senators who voted against the immediate deployment. I’m using the word ‘immediate’ with an emphasis. “Nobody said don’t use electronic transmission at all. You use it when we reach there and only NCC can give you information. That is the main reason why, in the Senate version, clause 52(3), there is that provision to contact the NCC because INEC will not know until they go to NCC. “So NCC will be the only institution to give that information because they are competent and it’s within their jurisdiction. And we say the National Assembly should approve of it. “It is not when they want to do transmission that they will have to go to National Assembly that we want to do the transmission. No. That once NCC has told INEC is now ready. INEC should come to the National Assembly with the NCC and say we are now ready. “There is no way any National Assembly, not even this Ninth National Assembly will deny INEC the use of electronic transmission as part of our electoral process when we are ready for it,” Lawan said. The Senate President said it was wrong to conclude that Senators who voted for electronic transmission with conditions did not like the results transmitted electronically. “I want to take this opportunity to debunk that insinuation or outright castigation of Senators that voted against the immediate deployment of electronic transmission that they don’t like the electronic transmission. It is not true. “Even though I didn’t vote.

Alleged assault: CCT Chairman drags Senate, Lawan, AGF, others to Court

Embattled Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Mr Danladi Umar, alleged to have physically assaulted Mr Clement Sargwak at Banex Plaza, Abuja last year has turned the table against the assaultee and the Senate Committee on Ethics , Privileges and Public Petitions. Umar who failed to appear last week before the Committee had since dragged Sargwak and the Senate before a Federal High Court in Abuja. Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ayo Akinyelure made the disclosure to journalists in his office. ‌ Included in the originating summons dated 13th July 2021, are the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; the Chairman and members of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions as well as the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, (SAN). The suit with file no FHC/ABJ/ CS/671/2021, is challenging Senate’s Constitutional power to conduct investigation and purpose for which it is exercisable. Among his prayers, CCT Chairman is asking the court to interpret the constitutional powers granted by the Senate or House Committees on Ethics and Public Petitions whether it covers public assaults vested in the Police and the Courts of Law by the Constitution. Listed as defendants in the suit are the President of the Senate, Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and the Attorney – General of the Federation. The summons read in part: ” Whether the purported case of assault which allegedly took place at Banex Plaza on 29, March 2021, forms part of the matters the 1st defendant is constitutionally empowered to investigate. “Whether the 1st defendant and its Committee, that is, the 3rd defendant, are competent to investigate and/or invite the plaintiff in relation to the investigation of the allegation of assault levelled against him. “Whether the powers of the 1st defendant to conduct the investigation are not by and/or subject to provisions of sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 and are not exercisable for the purposes of making law and exposing corruption, inefficiency or waste in the execution of administration of laws within its legislative competence and in the disbursement or administration of funds appropriated by the 1st defendant. “Whether the 1st defendant’s move to conduct an investigative hearing on the petition before it is not unconstitutional and does not amount to an unwarranted usurpation of the functions of the Police and of the Courts of competent jurisdiction.” Further investigation revealed that Umar through his lawyers, Sunday Edward (ESQ) and other Attorneys from Abuka and Partners had since informed the Senate to discontinue the investigative hearing, as the alleged Assaultee (Clement Sargwak), has been sued. His letter read in part, “We write to inform you that the case between our client and Clement Sargwak is now before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory ( suit no FCT /HC/ CV/ 1544/2021 Mr Danladi Umar vs Clement Sargwak) and the issue as to whether or not Clement Sargwak had discontinued and/or withdrawn his petition before your Honourable Committee is equally sub judice. “We trust that Senate, as the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, will respect due process and refrain from delving into a matter that is before a court of competent jurisdiction.” Speaking with newsmen, Senator Akinyelure however vowed that his Committee was determined to challenge the suit in court. He submitted that no arm of government is empowered to stop another, from carrying out its constitutional duties or functions. “Investigation on the assault meted out to a fellow Nigerian by the CCT Chairman had already commenced before he ran to court but his move will also be challenged by the legal department of the Senate. “He may not come, but the Committee will still have a session on the matter and other petitions before it next week Tuesday.”

Bullets Alone Can’t Stop Bandits, Jonathan Tells FG

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said bullets and other forces of arms alone cannot stop armed robbery, banditry and other forms of criminality in the country. He said this on Sunday in Abuja at the 50th birthday reception of a former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka. The event followed a thanksgiving and Communion service. According to him, tackling crimes and criminology requires top quality programmes of government, technology and other tactics. Jonathan, however, noted that the day Osita was born was the day armed robbers were first publicly shot in Nigeria. Daily Trust reports that the first-ever public execution in Nigeria took place at Bar Beach in July 1971, when one Babatunde Folorunsho, was shot for armed robbery, alongside Joseph Ilobo and Williams Alders Oyazimo, a sub-lieutenant in the Nigerian Navy. “The celebration of 50th birthday of Osita shows that he is a special person. So, it is a happy moment for all of us. Osita Chidoka is a blessing to the nation and those close to him know him very well. “I didn’t know him until when I got involved in politics and get to Abuja as a vice president and when I took over after I lost my President. “I have seen in him lots of talents, very talented very strategic. And he is somebody that really go for a number of things. He is a gift to Anambra State, he is gift to Nigeria and we wish him well. “(This is a) Very unique date. The day you (Osita) were born was the day armed robbers were first shot in Nigeria, it speaks a lot. Very unique. Luckily you are not an armed robber. But gone were the days when armed robbers were being shot. “With the cases of armed robbery and others going on now shows clearly that bullets alone cannot stop it or other criminal activities in human beings. “It requires top quality programmes of government, it requires technology, it requires a lot to stop armed robbery and all forms of crimes, including corruption that we talk about every day,” Jonathan said. He said while governments were killing armed robbers, others were robbing the pockets in the same arena and that is the kind of society that citizens are in today. He said things are becoming more complex with the introduction of IT that is now ruling the world, thus need for collective action to stem the tide of criminality.
