Drama as Policeman beats colleagues’ wives in Abia

Tragedy was averted on Saturday at Aba Central Police Station, Aba, Abia State, when an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ran amok and started firing sporadically and assaulting wives of other policemen in the area. Vanguard gathered that the incident began at about 7 pm when the policeman, identified as Henry, started assaulting women, children and shop owners near the station. Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the policeman fired several shots in the air, and battered people including wives of fellow police officers who own shops at the gate of the station. roasted chicken, yams and plantains had all her goods thrown into the gutter by the policeman, who also destroyed her kiosk and beat her up. The situation caused panic in the area, even as people who sustained injuries were taken to the Aba General Hospital, near the station. While being led into the station, the ASP was said to have caused another scare when he grabbed an AK-47 rifle held by one of the Mobile Police officers who held him. It took the intervention of other mobile policemen who beat him hard on his arm before he left the gun as they bundled him into the police station. According to shop owners; “The policeman suddenly started shooting in the air, creating panic. “He scared fellow police officers with his pistol and ran after people and beat them up including wives of other policemen. “We feared for the worst when he stopped firing in the air and began aiming at people with his pistol. “It was only when he bent to fix his pistol that some Mobile Policemen dashed to the scene and disarmed him. So this is how we would have ended on earth? God, thank you. “Thank you Jesus for preserving my life. Nobody is safe anymore. If a policeman can do this kind of thing to me, what are we saying again? “What did we do to him? What is our offence? For escaping alive, I’ll serve God forever.” Contacted, Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna said that the officer is being detained by the police. He said; “The Nigerian Police is a disciplined organization. And there are laid down procedures in handling the issue of any erring officer, irrespective of his rank and cadre. “I condemn the action of the police officer and I have to tell you that he is in custody right now and he will be treated departmentally.”

Akwa Ibom Gov: PDP will return Nigeria to past glory in 2023

Akwa-Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has the wherewithal to reunite Nigeria and restore it to its past glory. Speaking to newsmen after the graduation ceremony of the El-Amin International School, Minna, the Governor said Nigeria was at its peak of economic glory when the PDP was in charge. “I want to advise Nigerians that in 2023, let us return the PDP to government at the central and I can bet my certificates that the economy of this country shall return to its past glory. “Once we come back to the central, we will build the economy of Nigeria because we are bridge builders and we will reunite Nigerians.” The Governor argued everyone who had tasted the administration of the PDP can attest to the difference. “If you have tested PDP and discovered they performed, why not try them again. You cannot change the winning team, we will do our best to bring back the glory of the country,” he stressed. Speaking further about the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) passed by the National Assembly, the Governor noted the lawmakers were not fair to allocate three per cent to the South-South region. This, he said, is because the region is the worst affected by the effects and should have been given more consideration. “We are not asking for too much but insisting on three per cent is not fair to us. It is one thing to say these things but one thing we have realized is that people do not understand the impact this petroleum has cause our communities. “Our fishermen can no longer earn a living because of oil spillage, a lot of communities are no longer farming because no more farmlands. “The people need to come and see the devastating effect this has had in the communities. So it is not too much to give us five per cent.”

PIB, Electoral Act: Rep deputy speaker hails lawmakers for promoting northern interest

Mr. Aminu Malle, the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, has thanked northern members of the House for protecting and promoting the interest of the North in the recently passed Petroleum Industry Bill and the Electoral Act. The congratulatory message was sent on behalf of Wase by Malle to the northern caucus through their WhatsApp group and leaked to The PUNCH by one of the members. In the recently passed PIB, northern Nigeria’s quest for oil received a huge boost as Section 9 of the bill states that at least 30 per cent of the profit generated by the proposed Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited will go to the exploration of oil in ‘frontier basins,’ which are mostly northern states. However, the demand by oil producing communities in the South for five per cent of the profit of oil firms was cut down to three per cent For the Electoral Act, northern Reps also kicked against the compulsory electronic transmission of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission, arguing that many northern states have weak Internet penetration. Experts argue that electronic transmission of results would reduce incidents of rigging. In the message circulated by Wase’s chief of staff, the northern lawmakers were praised for protecting the interest of the North and showing unity. The message reads, “On behalf of the Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase and the Northern Caucus leader Hon. Musa Sarki Adar, I am directed to write and formally congratulate and appreciate all the northern caucuses for standing firm through their wisdom and strength to ensure the Northern interest in both PIB and Electoral Act is adequately placed in a position of advantage. “There is no doubt a house united will forever get whatever it wants, giving [sic] the advantage we have in size. May God Almighty continue to unite and bind us stronger. May He bless and reward us all abundantly. Remain blessed and wish you the best holidays and Sallah celebrations. Thank you all.” The 17 southern governors had, last week, insisted that the electronic transmission of results must stand and had kicked against the allocation of 30 per cent of NNPC’s profits to oil exploration. Attempts to speak with Malle proved abortive as he neither responded to repeated calls nor a text message on Saturday. However, the spokesman for the Deputy Speaker, Umar Puma, distanced his principal from the message. “I have received calls on this letter. It was not written by the Deputy Speaker,” Puma said. Hollywood Ripper’ Sentenced To Death

A man known as the “Hollywood Ripper” was sentenced to death Friday for the gruesome killings of two women in their homes in the early 2000s. Michael Gargiulo, 45, was convicted in 2019 of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Among his victims was 22-year-old Ashley Ellerin, who was found in her Hollywood home with 47 stab wounds in February 2001. On the night of her murder, Ellerin had been due to go on a date with actor Ashton Kutcher, who testified at the trial. The second murder victim was Maria Bruno, a 32-year-old mother of four and neighbor of Gargiulo who was attacked in her sleep in December 2005 and “quite literally butchered,” prosecutors said. “In this case, everywhere that Mr. Gargiulo went, death and destruction followed,” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler said Friday as he announced the sentence. Prosecutor Dan Akemon said Gargiulo targeted women who lived near him and waited for the perfect opportunity to attack them at night in or near their homes in “totally planned killings.” Gargiulo again insisted he was innocent at Friday’s sentencing session. He was arrested in 2008 following an attack on a woman in her apartment in Santa Monica, near Los Angeles. She survived and testified at the trial. Gargiulo also faces murder charges in Illinois stemming from an attack in 1993. But Gargiulo will not be executed, at least not for now. California is famously liberal and Democratic and Governor Gavin Newsom declared a moratorium on executions in 2019. Prior to that, the death penalty was last carried out in California in 2006, when it was halted by a federal court order. AFP

Leaders must remain calm during crisis — Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stressed the need for leaders to remain calm in times of crises so that the people being led will follow in their footsteps. According to him, “the burden of leadership requires us to act in faith at all times in the midst of adversity.” He made this assertion Saturday at the 25th year anniversary conference of the Redeemer’s International Leadership Academy themed: Winning in Adversity, organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God. ‌ A statement issued by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, quoted him as saying: “It is in times of adversity or difficulty, or hardship that leaders are most relevant and most needed. “The leader cannot afford to lose his cool or his focus. He must calm himself down and calm the people down as well.” According to the Vice President, “when all is well, there is no need for guidance, encouragement or instruction, but it is especially in the midst of wars, conflicts, insurgency, famines, danger, and fear, that people look to leadership.” Referencing the story of Moses and the Israelites in the Bible, Prof Osinbajo noted that “Moses looked up to God for help and God spoke to Him. But note that Moses first gave the people confidence in the power of God to deliver and fulfill His promises. “He had not yet heard from God on this particular problem, but because he knew the God he served, he was able to say this with confidence.” In the virtual keynote address at the conference of the Redeemer’s International Leadership Academy, the VP stressed the need for leaders to remain unruffled because “in adversity, especially where the future looks bleak, people want to give up, retreat, go back and they certainly don’t want to go forward.” Prof. Osinbajo himself an alumnus of the Academy then encouraged leaders, particularly Christian leaders, to act in faith and not fear when they are faced with a crisis, especially existential crisis. His words, “God knows all things; we must obey in faith even when we are afraid. This is the burden of leadership, especially leadership according to the principles of scripture.” In attendance at the conference were Pastor A.A Bolarinwa, Assistant Continental Overseer, Research and Development of the RCCG, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, Intercontinental Overseer for Corporate Social Responsibility and Pastor in Charge, RCCG Region 20 and Pastor Banky Ladele, the Acting Rector RILA. The statement informed that there were also business and secular speakers at the event including Mr. Kayode Pitan, CEO/Managing Director of the Bank of Industry; Mrs Ndidi Nwuneli, Managing Partner, Sahel Consulting; Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, Executive Director, Fate Foundation and Mrs Oluwatoyin Asiru-Balogun, the CEO TY Farm Place.

Shut Lai’s Kwara Factional Secretariat Now, Abdulrazaq Camp Tells APC

A group, the Coalition of Kwara APC Young Stakeholders (CKAYS), has demanded the shutdown of the factional Secretariat of the party recently commissioned by the minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Ilorin. CKAYS, which also called for the replacement of the minister with a “loyal and dedicated” party member, demanded that the factional chairman of the party, Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, be mandated to return every property in his possession immediately. They made the demand after the party’s national leadership suspended 11 members of the minister’s group over alleged anti-party activities. Addressing a press conference at the party secretariat, the State coordinator of CKAYS, AbdulRasheed Salaudeen, said the suspension of 11 members of the minister’s group by the national body has cleared the air about the authentic faction in the state. While declaring their unflinching support for Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, Salaudeen advised the likes of Akogun Oyedepo and Hon Saheed Popoola, whom he said are engaging in similar actions, to desist henceforth. “The national secretariat of our party should immediately direct compulsory shut down of the mock secretariat in Kwara State and direct all party members to unit under the leadership of the governor.” “The unveiling of an alternative party secretariat in the state is not only an attempt of their disregard for party constitution and leadership but also create a ground for disaffection, disunity disharmony and confusion within APC. “You will recall that CKAYS called for the removal of Hon. Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa (BOB) as the state party chairman when it became obvious that his motive and agenda to be our party Chairman is antithetical to the progressive intentions of the Governor coupled with gross financial misconduct and lack of accountability as alleged by party executives,” he added. He said the recent “divisive activities” of both Bolarinwa and the minister in the party were deliberate attempts to create disunity and room for opposition to stand better chance against the party in the state. Responding to the issue, the factional Financial Secretary, Mohammed Tajudeen, said nobody can call for the closure of the secretariat. He added that all the “suspension drama and accusations were antics of the Governor’s faction led by Abdullahi Samari”. “They can’t close our secretariat because the party’s constitution allows everybody to do things the way it suits the majority. The party goes with the majority which we are and not the minority. How many are they. They are not up to twenty thousand altogether. “When we say we open our Secretariat and some people said it should be closed. They should come and do their worse and lets see what happens. “On the suspension of the 11 members, they lacked the power to take such decision. To us, Bashir Bolarinwa remains the caretaker chairman and Samari the deputy. The release of the suspension said a committee has been set up. “But how can you set up a committee to look into a matter without giving the other party fair hearing. Those that they accused of anti-party were never called for any submission. This is just the antics of the Governor’s faction led by Abdullahi Samari,” he added.

“I have no hand in Kanu’s rearrest, Ngige tells IPOB

Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige has asked the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) to stop linking him to the re-arrest of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Ngige said as the Chief Labour Officer, he lacked the time to meddle into security and diplomatic matters, which clearly fall within the mandate of the Nigerian Security and National Intelligence Agencies. In a statement by his Media Office in Abuja on Saturday, the Minister described the statement by the IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, attempting to link him with the arrest of Kanu as deceitful, mischievous, malicious and wicked. The Minister said IPOB and its spokesperson know him (Ngige) very well as a man who calls “a spade a spade” and has no room for “equivocation or speaking from both sides of the mouth” since his days as Governor in Anambra State. Without a candidate, PDP optimistic of victory in Nov. 6 Anambra governorship election

Mr Augustine Okeke, Publicity Secretary of its Caretaker Committee said in a statement that the party was sure of victory going by the considerable public interest and commentaries that followed INEC’s action. He said the interests and commentaries indicated that PDP remained the peoples’ choice. “The considerable public interest, commentaries and concerns shown by Nigerians who are worried about the non-inclusion of a candidate for PDP in the list is a testament to the acceptance of the PDP. “It shows that the PDP is the party that Nigerians and Anambra people implicitly and absolutely trust to deliver good governance for Anambra people,’’ he stated. Okeke, who reassured the party’s supporters of victory, said that the non-inclusion of the name of PDP’s candidate in the list by INEC was procedural. According to him: “it does did not imply that PDP will not participate in the election. “Recall that faced with multiple litigations during the Imo North Senatorial bye-election, INEC took a similar stance by not including a name for the APC in the list of candidates.’’ Okeke expressed appreciation over the continued solidarity of Nigerians for the PDP.

Miyetti Allah: Fulani also victims of bandits

The Miyyati Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has alleged that conflicts in Atyap Chiefdom of Zangon Kataf Local Government area of Kaduna State, have so far led to the killing of 16 persons, mostly women and children, while over 300 houses belonging to the Fulani were reportedly burnt to ashes in different villages of the Chiefdom. MACBAN also said that the Fulani pastoralists were equally, victims of the atrocities of bandits who spare nobody, as “they are constantly rustling cows, kidnapping pastoralists and killing whenever victims fail to pay ransoms as demanded by the bandits.” Alhaji Haruna Usman Tugga, Chairman of the Miyyati Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria told journalists in Kaduna on Friday, that based on the information available to their association, the trigger for the present round of disturbances emanated from the attack on a family by unknown bandits in Gora Gan village of the Chiefdom on 7th July 2021. He regretted that ” as is characteristic of the misinformed youths who are indoctrinated to hate the Fulani pastoralists, attack on cattle rearers followed the unfortunate event. While security agencies moved swiftly to contain the violence around Gora Gan and adjoining villages, there was the mobilization of Atyap youths by some ethnic chauvinists among the Atyap ethnic community and other non-peace loving organizations that resulted in attacks on Fulani settlements throughout the Chiefdom. Within a few days, all the houses of the Fulani in the Chiefdom were burnt by mobs in broad daylight.” He said “In addition to the burning of settlements, an unconfirmed number of Fulani pastoralists were also killed. As a consequence, the surviving victims of the arson are now internally displaced and scattered around in neighbouring Local Governments of Kaura, Kauru, Lere, Jema’a and Kachia. Due to the nature of attacks and displacement of the Fulani people, we are yet to ascertain the total number of people killed, even though there are confirmed reports of the killing of 16 persons, mostly women and children. Over 300 houses belonging to the Fulani are reportedly burnt to ashes in the different villages for the Chiefdom.”

Lagos amputee hawker buys new house, set to establish water factory

Dreams are finally coming true for Mary Daniel, the 27-year-old amputee water hawker, as she launched her new house in the Igando area of Lagos State on Saturday. The single mum, who used to sell bottled water on highways in the Oshodi area of Lagos, did the house warming ceremony for the house which she built from the N25 million donation she received after Saturday PUNCH‘ s report. In the same compound of the newly acquired house, a sachet water factory is still in its building stage and she intends to have the factory named after herself. During an interview with our correspondent at the ceremony, Daniels revealed that she acquired the property for 17.5 million naira, stating that she already has two tenants in the house. For her factory, Daniels has purchased the engine and filters for production. According to her, what is left for the completion of the sachet water factory include water tank, flooring, electrical work, and roofing. Daniel’s status took a dramatic turnaround after her moving story was reported by Saturday PUNCH earlier in March. Dropping out at Junior Secondary School 3, she took to the streets in Onitsha, Anambra State, selling sachet water to cater to herself and her aged grandmother. She was impregnated in 2018 by her fiancé who she said denied responsibility for the pregnancy, forcing her to relocate to Delta State out of shame. Daniel continued the taxing trade in the oil-rich state even after giving birth. She relocated to Lagos in March, hawking bottled water in chaotic traffic and passing the night on the balcony of a building on Suwebatu Street, Oshodi. PUNCH’s report generated overwhelming emotions as she received donations to the tune of N25 million. Source: PUNCH
