Again, Gunmen kill 36, raze houses in Plateau community

Gunmen have killed no fewer than 36 persons while several others were injured in a fresh attack which occurred in Ahwol Ward, Naraguta community, in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau state. According to the PUNCH, it was gathered that the gunmen stormed the community with sophisticated weapons around 10 pm on Tuesday night and killed the victims while several others who sustained injuries during the attack have been rushed to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos, the state capital. The Paramount ruler of the Anaguta ethnic nationality in the state, Ujah Johnson Jauro confirmed the attack to The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday The Paramount ruler said, “Yes, it’s true. I have been informed that some gunmen attacked my people last night in Naraguta community with many casualties. But we are still investigating to know what really happened.” The Councilor for Ahwol Ward in the community, Yusuf Ali, who also confirmed the attack, said that people were burnt alive in the affected area. Another resident, Jeremiah Bulus, said, “corpses have been taken to the mortuary this morning and people are still making efforts to recover more corpses from several houses which the gunmen also set ablaze. The situation is really bad for the people ” According to the Councillor, the gunmen first vandalised the iron bridge linking the community before attacking the people which made it difficult for the security agents to assess the area when they were contacted over the attacks. He said “The gunmen were just shooting in every direction when they arrived the community around 10 pm. For now, dead bodies have been recovered and we are still searching for more victims because the shooting was too much. “When the attack was going on, the Chairman of the Local Government called the security agents to mobilize to the area but it was discovered that the gunmen destroyed the iron bridge linking the community.” The Spokesman for the Plateau Police Command, Ubah Ogaba, could not be reached when contacted. Also, several calls put across to the Military Information Officer of the Operation Safe Have , Major Ishaku Takwa, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Insecurity: The Govt Knows Sponsors Of Boko Haram, Says Former Naval Officer

Former Navy Commodore, Kunle Olawunmi (Rtd) on Wednesday hinted that the Nigerian government knows those behind the decade-long Boko Haram insurgency in the country. He made the comment during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. “They [government] know. Of course, it is in the news,” Commodore Olawunmi said. “In April this year, the government said they had arrested 400 Bureau De Change (BDCs)-related people that were sponsoring Boko Haram. They told us.” Earlier in the year, the presidency said it would publish names of those behind the Boko Haram war. It also linked the insurgency to the activities of some BDCs in the country. The development generated heated debates across the country. But months down the line, the long-waited list is yet to be made public, a situation the ex-military officer says does not bode well for the government who he accused of shielding criminals. “Try them, we know them. Why can’t this government, if not that they are partisan, bring those people out for trial?” he asked, corroborating calls from several quarters for the Federal Government to make good its promise. He claimed that the government has developed cold feet in fighting the insurgency because some of those backing Boko Haram are now top-ranking government officials. “I can’t come on air and start mentioning names of people that are presently in government that the boys we arrested mentioned,” he said, referencing his time as a member of the military intelligence team in 2017. “Some of them are governors now. Some of them are in the Senate. Some of them are in Aso Rock.” Olawunmi’s remark is the latest in the continued debates about how Nigeria can end the Boko Haram war which has led to thousands of deaths and displaced millions especially in the northeast and some neighbouring countries. While the military says the ongoing onslaught against the terrorists has yielded results and the criminals surrendered, calls for granting amnesty to some of the “repentant” members of the sect have also divided opinions among stakeholders. Advocates, citing the amnesty programme of the ex-President Musa Yar’Adua to ex-Niger Delta militants, say it will bring peace to the troubled North-East. But Olawunmi has faulted the move. “The challenge we have in this country cannot be solved the same way we solved the problem of Niger Delta. I told them we can’t use the same strategy for Boko Haram,” he argued, citing when he served a security and intelligence brief at the Defence Headquarters between time, between 2016 and 2016. According to him, fishing out the sponsors is a major way of ending the war. “The centre of gravity of Boko Haram and insurgency in Nigeria are the sponsors of that programme,” the professor of Intelligence and Global Security Studies, added.

Investigate your customers’ source of income, EFCC tells banks

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked banks to investigate the source of income of their customers. Abdulrasheed Bawa, EFCC chairman, said this on Tuesday, when members of the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria (ACAEBIN) paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja. Bawa said some customers will receive a huge sum of money within two months of opening an account. “I will like to urge you to know your customers, know the kind of businesses they do before opening an account for them because some customers will open an account within a space of two months a huge sum of money is found in the account, so there is need for you to try and query these information including their linked accounts,” he said. The EFCC said the anti-graft agency will start holding banks liable for fraud in financial deposits, where there are established cases of complicity in the sector from September 1. “Bawa implored the bank auditors to take issues of transparency in banking operations seriously, adding that starting from September 1, 2021 it will no longer be business as usual as the commission will hold banks liable where there are established cases of institutional complicity in fraud in the sector,” the EFCC chief was quoted in a statement. On his part, Uduak Udoh, vice-chairman of the association, said some customers are conniving with bank staff to loot funds, while seeking support from the commission. “Some customers are conniving with bank staff to loot funds. We want you to look into that area, not only the banks as we are ready to give you all the cooperation you need; we want you to trust bank auditors with information sharing because we cannot support fraudulent staff as they are a threat to the organization,” he added. In March, the anti-corruption agency asked bank employees to declare their assets — as a part of efforts to check the role of bankers in keeping funds acquired illegitimately.

He said this in a discussion with Boma and Whitemoney on Tuesday night, as the guys talked about girls in the house. Boma had earlier revealed that Angel is his favorite girl in the house because she doesn’t trouble him. Whitemoney, however, said that he likes Maria’s personality as he also revealed that he cannot sleep on her bed. “The only person’s bed that I know that I can’t sleep on is Maria’s. I can’t sleep in Maria’s bed,” Whitemoney said. Boma then asked if they were in any conflict and Whitemoney replied in the negative. Whitemoney said, “We do talk but I can’t sleep in Maria’s bed. I can’t go there. I’m attracted to Maria’s personality, not Maria herself. “I’m not attracted to Maria but I’m attracted to Maria’s personality. Maria is a smart leader. “That’s the kind of person I’d like to keep in my house to take care of my assets. You can fight what belongs to me. You will be able to protect my house. “I’m an Igbo man. I’ll not marry a woman because she’s fine. I’ll marry someone that can defend my wealth, my property, and train my children.” Cross pointed out that Maria goes extra length for what she wants. Whitemoney responded, “That’s the side of her that I’m attracted to, not any other thing.”

Army: We’re not recruiting repentant insurgents

The Nigerian Army says it is not enlisting former or repentant insurgents into the organisation. Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesman, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja. Nwachukwu said the army’s attention was drawn to a video circulated on social media by one Young Elder and produced by Anthony Jay which related the collapse of the Afghanistan military to the surrender of Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria. He said Young Elder, in a comic way, expressed worries about the surrendered insurgents. “While it is understood that the situation in Afghanistan calls for concerns by any right thinking person or organisation, the manner in which the comic Young Elder presented it shows his lack of basic knowledge on the subject he hurriedly delved into,” he said. “The amateurish production conjured some unfounded and baseless claims that only exist in the figment of their imagination, claiming that surrendered terrorists were going to be absorbed into the Nigerian Army. “For the avoidance of doubt, the NA does not have any repentant terrorist joining its ranks and does not have any plan for that. “There are teaming able-bodied Nigerians that are willing to join the NA to genuinely help in the fight against terrorism and other violent crimes.” The spokesman said the army is not so desperate for recruits that it will stoop low to enlist former insurgents. He said the “campaign of falsehood embarked upon by some individuals who do not wish the nation well cannot distract its personnel from their resolve to bring an end to the violent crimes in the country”. Nwachukwu assured Nigerians that the army under the leadership of Faruk Yahaya, chief of army staff, will continue to operate within the dictates of the law. “Surrendered terrorists will be received, processed and passed to the appropriate government agencies that are saddled with the responsibility of handling them,” he said. “While we recommend that matters related to security be left with those who have the requisite expertise and experience. “We wish to remind comic characters like Young Elder to focus on contributing towards nation building and not engaging in campaign of falsehood.”

“You created problems in Imo, Uzodimma berates PDP

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma yesterday dismissed as “infantile idiocy”, allegations by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that his administration had achieved nothing 18 months after he assumed office. He said only a blind man and those livid with jealousy and fixated with blackmail would fail to recognise the laudable achievements of his government. Information and Strategy Commissioner Declan Emelumba, reacting to a clip of a recent interview the PDP news media held with Osiza FM, which was circulated in the social media, said although most of the problems of the state were created by the opposition party, which ruled the state for 13 years, Uzodimma had worked hard to get the state working again. He said it was a lie and propaganda for PDP to claim that Imo had the worst road network, based on an unverified report of an online publication, whereas Uzodimma had built 46 roads. Read Also: N’Delta ex-militants to Sylva, senators: your roles in PIB tantamount to violence Emelumba said PDP also sold falsehood to the public by claiming that Imo State didn’t have cardiologists and nephrologists in its employ. “The truth is that the government has a cardiologist, Dr. Angela Mbakama, a nephrologist, Dr. Anyabuolu and a pathologist, Dr. Nweke, all at the Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUT), among others. “So it amounts to infantile mischief for anyone to jump on the microphone to claim that the state has none of these,” the commissioner said. “While the government does not inflict diseases on people, let me make it clear that we have these specialists at the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu,” he added. Emelumba said it was laughable that PDP was relying on questionable statistics to claim that Imo had the highest unemployment rate in the country. Said he: “It is not enough to run the mouth on statistics and keep rolling out figures. What is more important is to show the credibility of the figures. “So, we don’t know where they got their statistics. It is noteworthy that Governor Uzodinma has spent N8billion to empower thousands of youths to be self- employed.” He said the PDP had thought that their antics of contriving security crisis in the state would slow the governor down, “but they are now disappointed that the state has made progress beyond their imagination.” The commissioner said: “Only a party suffering from infantile idiocy or delusion of the highest order will be ignorant of the giant strides made by the APC government in Imo in the last 18 months.” He said a party that had practically nothing to show for its illegal seven months in office, except for the development of personal estates, could not judge a government that had enthroned accountability and probity in its financial transactions. Emelumba said it was under the Uzodimma administration that the state attracted a private refinery and a gas plant, “yet it is being accused of not doing enough in the ease of doing business.” He urged the people to ignore the allegations by the PDP, saying they were borne out of envy and frustration.

FG Rejects Calls For Self Defence, Says Masari Entitled To His Opinion

The Federal Government has dismissed the calls of Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State, his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom, some individuals and organisations, that people should defend themselves against bandits. The Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammed Dingyadi, during the 2nd annual media briefing at Force headquarters in Abuja, said the government was not in support of citizen self-defence as proposed, saying Masari and others are entitled to their opinions. “I think we should know that we are in Nigeria, where everybody is entitled to his opinion. I think the governor has the right to canvass for what he thinks it is right in his state,” the minister said. He, however, justified the calls if it is based on community policing strategies in order to improve security of the communities. Dingyadi also stressed that the challenges presented by the bandits was the guerilla warfare strategy of hit-and-run which the armed forces were determined to contain. According to him, the government and the armed forces needed the support of the citizenry as the government was “equal to the task”. He added, “Of course, we shouldn’t expect the people to just be sleeping without taking measures to ensure that they secure themselves, they secure their neighbours and they secure their communities. That is the essence of community policing. “So, we need to have the support and partnership of Nigerians in the efforts we are making towards fighting crimes and criminalities. I think that is what the governor is talking about. “Everybody should contribute his quota towards fighting crimes. We are not saying people should take arms illegally. “What we’re saying is that people should get ready in whatever it takes to do so, to ensure that we protect ourselves, we protect our neighbours, we protect our communities.”

Soldier dies in army detention centre, widow demands probe

The family of Lance Corporal Kazeem Aribido, who was attached to the 81 Battalion, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, has been thrown into mourning after receiving the news of his death in a detention centre in Ibadan, Oyo State. PUNCH Metro gathered that Kazeem’s ordeal started in September 2019 when some military personnel found three bullets in his flat in the Mokola area of Ibadan. The Ogun State indigene was said to have languished in the military detention centre until his death in August 2021. His widow, Kafilat, explained that the late Kazeem was released to take care of his health after suffering a series of asthmatic attacks during an operation in Zamfara State. She noted that her husband had barely got home when some military personnel arrived at their residence for a search. Kafilat said, “On September 10, 2019, when the military police and some intelligence personnel came to search our flat in the barracks, they instructed me to step outside. “My husband, who had been handcuffed, was there when they searched the flat till they found three bullets in his backpack and took him away to the guard room in the 2 Division in Odogbo, Ibadan. “When I went there to see him, he said he was being set up, but expressed confidence that investigation would prove his innocence. His colleagues in Zamfara told me he did nothing wrong as he got approval before returning home.” The widow said Kazeem was later transferred to the Garrison Guardroom at the Nigerian Military Special Investigation Bureau in Abuja, where he was detained for over 17 months. She said, “He was dumped in a cell at the SIB, Abuja, without being questioned. I went there because I was scared of his asthmatic condition, but I was chased away. I didn’t hear from my husband for four months until he called in April 2020. “Sometime in June 2020, I was allowed to see him and he told me what happened was connected to the three bullets recovered from his backpack. He said he was bothered about his health and forgot to officially submit the bullets when he returned from the Zamfara operation. “He also said the soldiers who searched his flat were trying to frame him up, claiming they discovered magazines in the flat, aside from the three bullets. Several army officers, including Major Idris, Okewunmi, Aliu, Akinyemi were assigned at different times to look into his case. “They even revisited the 81 Battalion barracks, checked his statements of account in the bank during the investigation and found nothing against him.” The mother of one stated that at the end of the investigation, he was absolved of blame and ordered to be released. She noted that on his return to the 2 Division, Ibadan, he was detained. “When I visited him, I was told to get a lawyer as he would be court-martialed. We got two lawyers. Surprisingly, my husband’s name was not on the list of people to be court-martialed. “He told his lawyer that Major Akinyemi, who completed the investigation in Abuja, told him he had been freed and no longer had a case with the Army. “The charges preferred against him were not ready until after a month. At the resumed hearing, the soldiers brought a witness, but the witness surprisingly debunked the claim that weapons were found in his flat. “My husband’s lawyer asked the court if he could file a no-case submission and the court agreed. The lawyer submitted the letter in August and we were told to come on Monday, August 23, 2021, for the final judgement. But it was the news of his death I received. I want justice because his death is suspicious,” Kafilat added. A spokesman for the 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major Iyke Iweha, said he needed time to investigate the case and get back to our correspondent. He said, “Give me time to come back and respond to you appropriately.” Culled from PUNCH
