Insecurity: Nigerians have lost faith in Buhari, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says Nigerians have “lost faith” in the capacity of President Muhammadu Buhari to secure the country. The opposition party said bandits and terrorists “now freely” attack communities across the country without restraint. The party was speaking in the wake of the attack on the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) and the evacuation of students from the University of Jos over the rising insecurity in Plateau state. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesperson, said Nigeria’s insecurity has worsened, adding that “bandits now have the temerity to attack military formations”. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the decision by some state governments to evacuate their citizens from violence and terror-ridden states, including Plateau state, further confirms that Nigerians have lost faith in the capacity of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration to secure the nation,” the statement reads. “The party laments that the insecurity situation has so deteriorated under President Buhari and the APC’s incompetent and compromising watch that suspected bandits now have the temerity to attack military formations, including the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, where they killed two officers and abducted another senior officer. “Bandits and terrorists are now freely ravaging our communities in Kano, Kaduna, Kogi, Benue, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Imo and other states of the federation, including Mr. President’s home state, Katsina, where the governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has now asked victims of terror attacks to defend themselves. “It is distressing that having lost hope in the capacity and commitment of the President Buhari-led APC administration to protect their citizens, state governments are now sending vehicles to the University of Jos, Plateau state, to evacuate their citizens. This shows their complete loss of confidence in the APC administration and the empty promises by the Buhari Presidency. “It is even more disheartening that while our nation is under turmoil and while hundreds of helpless Nigerians, including innocent students, are languishing in kidnappers’ den, President Buhari and APC leaders are more interested in their lavish funfair with state-owned resources and facilities. “Our party notes that violence and acts of terrorism had escalated across the country due to the incompetence and compromises of the Buhari administration as well as its refusal to heed wise counsel from well-meaning Nigerians, including the PDP on how to secure and stabilize the nation.” The PDP asked Nigerians to “hold the APC directly responsible for the escalated acts of terrorism in our country as history will continue to mark this administration for its mass failure in governance and for plunging our nation into the worst form of hardship and suffering ever”.

Petrus Obi, NUJ National Vice President, South-East zone, stated this in a statement in Abuja. sit-at-home order, which though has been momentarily suspended by the IPOB authorities is being largely complied with by residents and inhabitants anywhere in the zone out of fear for their lives. “It is on record that Abia, being the home state of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been worst hit by reports of insecurity amidst palpable tension that has enveloped the entire zone. “The IPOB agitators sustained remonstration of the continuous incarceration of their son and leader Nnamdi Kanu may not have a better opportunity than this being presented by the conference to make a statement.” Daily Trust reports that October has also been fixed for the court hearing on the bail application of the IPOB leader. Obi said, “I fear for the lives of the over 1,000 journalists besides other participants, who will be in attendance at the slated conference venue which of course I will not attend because my life is so precious to me. “It will be in the interest of the revered union and professional body that the conference be postponed and moved to a safer state in the face of security issues in the zone.”

Ortom: No constitutional basis for review of grazing reserves

Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, says President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to review grazing reserves across the country is unconstitutional. The Benue governor said it is worrying that while most states have agreed that ranching is a better way to resolve insecurity, the president has maintained his position on open grazing. This statement comes following Buhari’s approval of the recommendations of a committee to review 368 grazing reserves across 25 states in the country — a development that has been met with criticism. Femi Falana, human rights lawyer, had criticised Buhari for the decision, adding that open grazing is “obsolete”. Speaking on the development when he featured on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Tuesday, Ortom described the president’s decision on grazing reserves as “disappointing”. “I’m disappointed with the presidency. One would expect that we’re in a democratic governance and the presidency would have understood this,” the governor said. “Some weeks ago, Mr. President challenged Nigerians on whether he is not ruling this country according to the rule of law. And I came out and I said ‘Mr. President, if some people are deceiving you, let me tell you the facts on ground. You’re not ruling this country according to the rule of law in some aspects’. And here we are. “Does Mr. President not have an attorney-general to advise him on what the law says about land administration? There is a land use act enshrined in the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and it amazes me for Mr. President to say that he will revive obsolete grazing reserves and grazing routes. “I have had personal conversations with Mr President and his handlers. I have said ‘Look, when we had grazing routes and grazing reserves, what was the total population? Less than 40 million. This was when it was initiated and then it was as a result of the laws governing northern Nigeria. Today, we are over 200 million people. How do you expect the same thing?’ The land hasn’t increased, and now, it’s even less because of the ceding of Bakassi to Cameroon. Now, in 2021, you’re talking about open grazing. “How are we going to achieve this? If Mr. President respects the law, the land use act gives governors the power to preside over land administration on behalf of the people. So, it is amazing and I am surprised to hear this coming from Mr President as if he doesn’t have an attorney-general or lawyers around him to advise him. “I think Mr President was misquoted or he did it out of error. He should come out to apologise to Nigerians. There is no basis whatsoever for this to be going on when we have the Constitution.”

Zulum: Surrendered Insurgents Should Not Be Rejected To Avoid Endless War

The Governor of Borno State, Babangana Zulum, has said that repentant insurgents should not be rejected in order to avoid worsening the insurgency war. The Governor said this on Tuesday after he paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House. He believes the price for rejecting the surrendered bandits could be far worse than the current situation. “The report of the surrendering of the insurgents and to me in particular and to the greater people of Borno State is a very welcome development unless we want to continue with an endless war,” Zulum said. “I see no reason why we should reject those who are willing to surrender. “I was attacked for more than 40, 50 times. I know the magnitude of this problem. “More than 100,000 people were killed and therefore, I am in total support of this ongoing surrender by the insurgents”. According to him, 2,600 Boko Haram members have so far surrendered, inclusive of their wives and children.

300 members languishing in jail, IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that over 300 members are languishing in jail and other detention facilities across Ebonyi State with dead in the prison. It said three of its members died in prison two days ago following alleged torture from the security agents. In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group condemned incessant killings, unprovoked attacks and abduction of its members and security operatives, Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the State. It regretted that its members were dying in security cells while terrorists were being set free. The statement partly reads: “The global family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu strongly condemns the incessant killings and unprovoked attacks and abduction of those suspected to be IPOB members and Eastern Security Network, ESN operatives in Ebonyi state by the wicked Nigeria security agents. “This atrocity is being perpetrated with the connivance of the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi and the infamous EBUBEAGU security outfit. “Their intention is to unleash terror on innocent citizens of Ebonyi State, and possibly stop them from supporting the agitation for Biafra restoration. “These agents of oppression supported by Gov. Dave Umahi have continued to kill IPOB members and innocent Biafrans, tagging them ESN operatives. “Over 300 members of IPOB are currently languishing in jail and other detention facilities across Ebonyi State, and many have died in the prison. “Two days ago three people died in prison because of torture from the security agents. Those who were confirmed dead inside the Ebonyi prison include (1) Mazi Obinna Iroegbul; (2) Onye Army (3) Sydney and others who were suffering from torture. “It is only shameful that while the federal government with the support of Northern governors is busy freeing and rehabilitating captured terrorists and bandits, some treacherous South East Governors are busy killing their own people who volunteered themselves to protect their homes from invaders who continuously slaughtering our mothers, wives and sisters in the bushes and forests in our territory.”
