The Chief Security Officer of the institution, Ken Chukwura, said the deceased’s roommates had been invited for questioning while investigations had commenced. Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that investigations had commenced. Nigerian Polytechnic Student Kills Pregnant Girlfriend, Buries Her In Shallow Grave A polytechnic student in Nigeria, Mumini Abubakar has killed his girlfriend, Franca Elisha, and secretly buried her remains in a shallow grave. Abubakar was said to have allegedly killed Franca, a Diploma II student of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa state, in the process of aborting her pregnancy. SaharaReporters learnt that the late Franca had informed her boyfriend, Abubakar of her pregnancy, and the latter decided to terminate it. He was said to have allegedly sought the help of his friend, Huzaifa Shu’aibu, a student of the College of Health Technology, Mubi, who injected Franca with a drug to terminate the pregnancy. The duo and one other accomplice have been arrested in connection to the crime, as revealed by the police. Spokesperson for the police in the state, DSP Suleiman Nguroje, on Saturday, confirmed to SaharaReporters that Mumini Abubakar, Huzaifa Shu’aibu, and Rabi’u Adamu were apprehended in connection to the crime. Abubakar, a resident of Sanda ward under the Yola-South Local Government Area had allegedly treated the late Franca like his wife, leading to the pregnancy. However, when he was informed by Franca of the pregnancy, he decided to abort it. He reportedly took the deceased into his room located at the students’ community behind Adamawa State University, Mubi, for the abortion on August 6, 2021. A friend of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “To carry out their planned abortion, the accused invited his friend and a student of the College of Health and Technology, Mubi, Huzaifa Shu’aibu, who supplied an injection for the abortion. “Huzaifa injected Franca with a powerful drug for abortion after which she fainted immediately, but as God would have it, she later regained consciousness. “In order to perfect the termination of the pregnancy, Huzaifa gave the late Franca a second round of the injection after she had regained her consciousness, but unfortunately she fainted for the second time and subsequently died. “Thereafter, the duo invited one of their friends and a student of the polytechnic, Rabiu Adamu, and the trio waited until midnight to Bury the corpse in a shallow grave. “The remains of Franca were buried along with a mobile phone and a National Identity Card, belonging to the deceased in an effort to destroy evidence.” However, the father of the deceased, Elisha Iliya, a resident of Sabon Gari, Mubi, told our reporter that “my daughter left home on the fateful day for school, but did not return home as usual”. “We searched everywhere as well as made contacts, but to no avail. “We decided to contact her friend and fellow student, who told us she last saw my daughter with Abubakar on the day she was killed while running to the hostel because it was raining. “It was the girl who helped us to locate the whereabouts of Abubakar, to effect his arrest. “Abubakar was arrested while playing football as if nothing had happened. He however led the police to my daughter’s shallow gravesite,” he said. Confirming the incident, Nguroje, said, “The death of the lady was reported to the command after which the Commissioner of Police, Adamu Alhaji, ordered the investigation and arrest of the suspects. “Investigation so far revealed that it was Mumini Abubakar who impregnated her and that it was Huzaifa Shu’aibu, who administered the injection, while Rabiu Adamu assisted

Hunger, Diseases, Shekau’s Death… Why Boko Haram Terrorists are Surrendering to the Army

In the past few weeks, the news circle has been dominated by reports of repeated surrenders of Boko Haram terrorists to the Nigerian military. More than 2,000 terrorists were reported to have surrendered and branded ‘repentant’ by the Army, claiming adherence to international laws relating to ‘enemies willing to surrender’. Lai Muhammed, the Minister for Information and Culture, also said repentant Boko Haram terrorists should not be prosecuted but treated as prisoners of war. Amidst controversies trailing the legitimacy of reintegrating terrorists into society, there have been concerns and conversations on and off social media. While loyalists of President Muhammadu Buhari see the massive surrenders of the insurgents as a great milestone, observers and critics are sceptical, wondering if the weekly parades of repentant terrorists are not mere propaganda. This has raised a major question: why are these terrorists suddenly surrendering to the Army? After studying the trajectory of reportage, FIJ contacted sources with sufficient knowledge of the activities of the terrorists in their hideouts: THE DEATH OF SHEKAU On May 19, Abubakar Shekau, the Boko Haram leader who was drivng a brutal jihadist campaign, was ambushed in Sambisa Forest by rival insurgents of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP). Shekau was reported to have died after exploding his suicide vest. His death, FIJ gathered, was followed by a period of instability within the jihadist movement, as ISWAP hunted down any Boko Haram commanders who refused to swear allegiance, before resuming its fight against government forces. Sources say ISWAP fighters carted away weapons from Shekau’s base and became even better armed. After the operation, as many as 18 Boko Haram commanders defected to the rival insurgent group. “The Shekau empire collapsed after his death. Many of his foot soldiers became powerless because ISWAP took over their gunfires. The Shekau faction of Boko Haram became leaderless,” a source told FIJ. ANARCHY Foot soldiers left in Shekau’s faction became insurgents without arms, leaving them with no option other than pledging allegiance to the ISWAP commanders. ISWAP eventually realigned with Boko Haram to fight Nigerian soldiers and impose taxes on peasant farmers within their territories. An interim council headed by Abu Mus’ab Al-Barnawi restructured the leadership of the extremist sect. The shake-up, FIJ gathered, was in line with a directive from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an international terrorist group that claims religious authority over all Muslims. After forming a coalition, many of Shekau’s fighters were arrested and incarcerated in an ISWAP prison at Tumbum Kayowa for committing various crimes. Also, commanders of the Shekau faction were reduced to junior fighters and marabout slaves in the ISWAP lair. FIJ gathered that the Shekau faction of Boko Haram fighters would rather renounce their participation in the terrorism campaign and surrender to the Nigerian troops than remain with ISWAP to continue facing humiliation in the camps. “The massive surrenders of Boko Haram fighters are largely due to loss of confidence, maltreatment, and growing of insurrections between the ISWAP and members of the Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah Wa’l-Jihād (JAS) after the death of their leader, Abubakar Shekau,” a source with the knowledge of the insurgents’ activities told PRNigeria and his claim was corroborated by sources who spoke to FIJ. Earlier this month, ISIS sacked some leaders of Boko Haram in Nigeria, following the recent massive surrenders to the Army. Another reason for the sack was the leaders’ failure to sustain the reunification of ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters after the demise of Abubakar Shekau. HUNGER AND DISEASES “Basically, the Shekau faction of Boko Haram are the ones surrendering, not the ISWAP,” another source told FIJ. “Many of them could no longer go to farm since ISWAP fighters took over. So, they’re hungry.” Suddenly, there was an outbreak of diseases such as cholera and malaria in their hideouts. They were also burdened by hunger because they could no longer farm. So, many of the insurgents were advised by their famished wives and relatives to surrender to the Army when they could not withstand the disaster that befell them. FIJ had reported how many of the repentant terrorists, during profiling, admitted that their various enclaves had been ravaged by hunger, disease, and the fear of military offensives. The heavy bombardment campaign targeting infrastructure, armouries, camps and high-valued locations of the insurgents had also forced them into hiding and caused hunger and hard living conditions in their hideouts. ICYMI: IPOB Alleges Plot By Nigeria Police, Others To Attack South-East Residents On Monday

The People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that security agencies are planning to attack residents of the South-East region on Monday. In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, obtained by SaharaReporters on Sunday, the group also alleged that security agents would also blame the assault on IPOB members and its militia wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN). IPOB had on Monday, August 9 ordered South-East residents to ‘sit at home’ every Monday but by the following Monday, it announced that its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu directed that the sit-at-home order should be observed only the day he appears in court. However, as the separatist group reminded the people of the region to go about their businesses on Monday, it also warned security operatives that it would not tolerate assault on its members and well-wishers. The statement reads, “The intelligence unit of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has uncovered secret plots by the Nigeria security agencies, most especially the Department of State Services, DSS; and the police to disguise as IPOB and ESN operatives to attack traders who come out tomorrow for their legitimate business. “We, therefore want to put the world, especially residents of Biafra land that (sic) IPOB has since two weeks ago suspended its initial declaration of Monday sit-at-home order. It, therefore, makes no sense that we will at the same time be enforcing the suspended order. “IPOB restates that there is no longer Ghost Mondays in Biafra land in solidarity with our detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Sit-at-home will only be observed on the days our leader will be making appearances in court. Such days will be well publicised ahead of time. “Everybody is hereby placed on alert about this wicked plot. IPOB will not tolerate any attack on any Biafran or resident of Biafra under any guise. People should be allowed to go about their businesses without any molestation or harassment.” In the statement titled, ‘IPOB Uncovers Plot by Security Agents to Attack People on Monday and Blame It on ESN’, the group enjoined market leaders to open for business, adding that security agents would be held answerable for any assault on people on Monday. “We are warning politicians and traitors, including security agents who have designed to destroy IPOB and tarnish our hard-earned global reputation to retrace their steps. Biafrans are free to come out tomorrow and every Monday to do their normal business. All market leaders in Biafra land are advised to comply with this directive, and ensure their markets are open for business. “Security agencies have perfected plans to unleash attacks on innocent people in the name of ESN and IPOB volunteers. We have no plans again to enforce any sit-at-home order. “The Nigeria security agents are to be held accountable for any attack tomorrow on innocent Biafrans. They want to wear jean trousers and combat knickers jeans and brand it ESN and IPOB volunteers. Our people should resist any attempt by anybody to attack them tomorrow. “We understand that all DPOs (Divisional Police Officers), DCOs, and other senior police officers in Enugu held meetings to perfect this plan to attack innocent Biafrans and tag it ESN attacks. “Fleet of Hilux vehicles have also been set aside for this assignment tomorrow. Our people need to be cautious,” the statement added.

Suspected Drug Dealer Arrested In Church

A suspected drug dealer has been arrested in a popular pentecostal church in Lagos. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed this on Sunday via a statement issued by its spokesman, Femi Babafemi, He said NDLEA operatives trailed the suspect to Ojodu Berger in the Ikeja area of the state. Channels Television gathered that the suspect – Stephen Afam Ikeanyionwu – had been on the wanted list of the anti-narcotics agency “for attempting to export 69.65 kilograms of cocaine, heroin, and cannabis to the United Kingdom through the NAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA)”. His arrest followed the interception of a consignment of illicit drugs weighing 69.65kg going to the UK through the Lagos airport on August 12. “The illegal baggage had been sent to the airport for export through a freight forwarding company, which in turn gave a driver to deliver at the NAHCO export shed,” the statement partly read. “Following the arrest of the driver, follow-up operations and investigations later revealed the true identity of the actual owner of the consignment, Stephen Afam Ikeanyionwu, who was arrested three days later in a sting operation.” Also at the Lagos airport, NDLEA operatives also arrested an Italy-bound passenger, Abibu Miminu, during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airways flight to Italy via Addis-Ababa for ingesting illicit drugs. The agency’s spokesman explained that the suspected trafficker excreted 68 wraps of heroin in three excretions, all weighing 800grams while under observation between August 14 and 15. “In the same vein, narcotic officers of the Directorate of Operation and General Investigation have intercepted at two courier companies in Lagos 840 grams of Methamphetamine going to Australia and concealed in bolts. “340 grams of Meth hidden in locally made footwear and also going to Australia; 1 kilogram of cocaine coming from Ghana with the UK as destination and concealed in four local guitars. Also seized from one of the courier firms is another 480grams of Meth concealed in footwear and going to Australia,” the statement noted. Meanwhile, a South Africa returnee, Obi Chigozie Samuel, was also arrested at the Lagos airport last Sunday during the inward clearance of Ethiopian Airlines from Addis-Ababa, for importing 58grams of skunk into Nigeria. During a preliminary interview, he admitted ownership and claimed to be a cannabis smoker.” Similarly, in strings of operations in Edo, Ondo, Kaduna, Kano and Kogi states, at least 2,504.8 kilograms of diverse illicit drugs were seized from multiple suspects in the past week. In Kogi, the agency nabbed a 60-year-old woman, Comfort Uzor, with 62.1kg cannabis on August 17 in Lokoja, where one Dayyabu Usman was also caught with 8kg of the same substance. While Uzor was said to have sourced hers from Bolorunduro in Ondo state and was heading to Abuja, Usman purportedly got his from Lagos and was taking it to Kano for sale. In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives raided the home of one Joseph Sunday at Ungwa Pama, Birnin Gwari area of the state and recovered 48.3kg of cannabis from his room following credible intelligence. Following a raid on Ugbuwe forest in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, 146 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 2,044 kilograms were seized. This is as one Ikechukwu Aleke was arrested in Kano State with 30,000 tablets of Tramadol, 225mg and 99 bottles of Codeine syrup. One Muktar Muhammad was also arrested with 370 bottles of Codeine cough syrup, weighing 60.4kg, and 900 tablets of Rohypnol One Sufiyanu Abubakar was arrested in Kano with 400 plastic bottles of Codeine cough syrup weighing 52kg. Mutta Hassan Wada, who allegedly specializes in using courier firms to send drugs to a recipient in China, using cooking spice bottles for concealment, was equally nabbed by the agency’s operatives. Meanwhile, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Retd) has commended operatives of the agency for strings of arrests and seizures in the past week, urging them to keep up the tempo. “We have all laid our hands on the plough, there’s no looking back, no retreat or surrender and as such I urge all our officers and men to intensify the ongoing offensive action until the last gram of illicit drug is taken away from merchants of death,” Marwa said.

Instructively, while the parents and guardians appear happy to receive their wards, the freed students appear sad and traumatised.

Afghan Woman Delivers Baby On US Evacuation Flight

An Afghan woman has delivered a baby girl just after touching down aboard a US evacuation flight. The US Air Mobility Command posted photos of the woman on its social media platforms early Sunday. She gave birth in the cargo bay of a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft moments after landing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany on Saturday. “During an evacuation flight from an Intermediate Staging Base in the Middle East, the mother went into labor and began experiencing complications due to low blood pressure,” the Air Mobility Command said. “The aircraft commander made the decision to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilize and save the mother’s life. Upon landing, Airmen from the 86th MDG came aboard and delivered the child in the cargo bay of the aircraft. The baby girl and mother were transported to a nearby medical facility and are in good condition.” The flight was carrying Afghans from an intermediate staging base in the Middle East. Since the Taliban took over the Middle East nation last week, thousands of Afghans have fled the country, fearing for their safety. On Monday, they crowded onto the tarmac in the hope of catching any flight out. Dramatic footage posted on social media showed a scene of chaos on the runway, with civilians frantically clambering up an already overcrowded and buckling set of airstairs. It was a desperate bid to board a parked passenger plane and escape the city a day after the government’s collapse. As a crowd of hundreds watched on, those who successfully climbed the stairs helped others up, while some hung from the stair railings with their hands.

Current Wave Of Agitation In Nigeria Is Very Worrisome – Catholic Bishop

Bishop Callistus Onaga has lamented the increasing rate of agitations in several parts of the country, saying the development is worrisome. Onaga, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, made the comment during the second plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Enugu on Sunday, calling Nigerians to pray for solutions to the numerous challenges facing the nation. “Politically, the current wave of agitations all over the country is very worrisome. This informed the picking of the title of this homily ‘Will you also go away.’ “We are at a very dangerous stage and very important state in many axes of our society and it is hoped that this conference will throw positive lights on the way forward.” Onaga also decried the worsening level of insecurity in the nation, describing it as “the greatest of all the threats to Nigeria’s existence as a single sovereign country”. “Every day, the front pages of Nigeria’s newspapers and news headlines on television, radio, and the social media are filled with reports of abductions or kidnappings for ransom, terrorism, banditry, herders’ attacks and open grazing on people’s farmlands, reprisal attacks, political assassinations, and other opportunity crimes. “It is so bad that as we are here, a number of our school children and other abductees are still in the bush languishing in the den of self-determination,” the cleric added. He, however, advised the government to, beyond “condemning insecurity in the most absolute terms”, design, promulgate, and be seen to be really implementing result-oriented policies to arrest the security deterioration.”

14 Killed, Houses Burnt As Southern Kaduna Boils Again

At least fourteen people have been killed in a fresh attack at Mado village, Mabushi in Atyap Chiefdom of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Some houses were torched in the attack launched on Saturday night. Speaking to Daily Trust on the development, the Chairman, Atyap Chiefdom Peace and Security Partnership Committee, (ACPSPC), Mr John Bala Gora, wondered the reason for the incessant attacks despite efforts at restoring peace. He also renewed his appeal to security operatives to redouble efforts to secure the “defenceless and peace loving people of the chiefdom”. In a reprisal attack, a Fulani settlement in Kankada, Madakiya District in Bajju Chiefdom of Zangon Kataf local government area, was completely burnt down Sunday morning. Halima Haruna, a female resident of the torched settlement, who was rescued and taken to Zonkwa Divisional Police Station, told Daily Trust that the attackers surrounded their community in the early hours of Sunday. A wife to the Ardo of Kankada, Haruna, said she saw two corpses, man and a woman, on her way to hide somewhere. “We were forced to run and hide somewhere while some of our people ran to the bush for their safety.” “We don’t know what happened to them as I am speaking with you now, we spent three hours before the security arrived and took us to the Police Station here in Zonkwa. Our houses were totally razed,” she said She said the attackers told them that they want to take revenge of what happened to them Saturday night somewhere around Samaru Kataf, “which we know nothing about.” In the past one week, four villages in Atyap chiefdom have come under separate attacks with scores killed, many injured and several houses burnt. Confirming both the incidents to our reporter, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kaduna State, ASP Muhammed Jalige said Policemen have been deployed in the attacked community. (Photo by Wakil Kohsar / AFP) A U.S.-based historian and professor of Africana Studies, Apollos Nwauwa says the Taliban takeover of government in Afghanistan has the capacity to embolden Boko Haram in Nigeria and other terrorist groups across the world. Nwauwa, a director of African Studies at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, U.S. told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York that the victory might also give psychological boost to terrorist organisations. He said the victory might embolden not only Boko Haram but herdsmen and other organisations with hidden agenda. “So they will think they can succeed in Nigeria or in West Africa that is the kind of psychological advantage they may be having now, ’’ he said. According to him, the Taliban are is an Islamic extremist group that harboured a lot of terrorists with the likes of Osama bin Laden coming readily to mind. He added that their own interpretation of Sharia law led to all forms of brutality, particularly toward women. He said Afghanistan became a safe haven for terrorist organisations and it was the reason U.S. wanted to get rid of them. “Now that they are back full force in government, organisations like Al-Qaeda, Irish, and invariably Boko Haram will see solace in this development,’’ he said. Nwauwa, who is the Chairman, Nigerian Diaspora Movement (NDM), said that the Taliban takeover of power had created fear among Afghans, noting that the international community ” is not also sure if the Talibans will not be brutal toward the citizens.” “They have told us they are not the same Taliban that we used to know before, and that they are going to treat women better and would grant amnesty as well as do things better. “But we don’t know maybe they want to consolidate power first and come back with their brutality. ”So it is not certain how their regime will be,’’ he said. In addition, the official said it was not also clear if the Talibans would pursue the policy of retaliation against certain countries. “No retaliation, no intimidation. That is what the Taliban have been saying but Afghans who are seeking refuge abroad know that may not be true,’’ Nwauwa said. He called on the Nigerian government to ensure that its diplomats and citizens were evacuated from Afghanistan. NAN reports that the Taliban victory is the outcome of years of hardwork and strategy. Afghanistan has 400,000 soldiers yet the government was taken over by Taliban who supposedly had at most 75,000 fighters. When the U. S. and Nathan forces dislodged the Taliban in Afghanistan in the wake of the Sept. 9, 2011 bombing of the World Trade Center many of the Taliban fighters did not leave the country. A lot of negotiations took place between the tribal leaders in the country and the fighters. As a result many of these fighters simply dropped their arms and were recruited into the Afghani army where they remained and rose through the ranks. They got promotions, training, ammunition, and money legally from the U.S. for the years to come. As soon as the U.S. began to withdraw its forces from the country based on the agreement reached with the U. S. – backed Afghan government, the Taliban struck and took over the government.
