Nobody bribed Kanu to suspend sit-at-home, says IPOB

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denied alleged compromise or betrayal of the struggle by its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu over the suspension of the earlier announced Monday’s weekly sit-at-home across the Southeast. It also regretted the ‘barrage of insults’ rained on its leadership over the adjustment, warning that such would not be tolerated. In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB explained the adjustment by its Directorate of State, DOS followed direct order from the highest authority in its hierarchy. It described as embarrassing and unfortunate the derogatory attacks on its leadership over the decision, stressing that those that misconstrued the action or twist it for ulterior motives had lost focus of the struggle’s ultimate objective. The statement reads in part: “We want to make it clear to all that the adjustment by the Directorate of State, DOS was in fact as a result of a direct order from the highest authority in IPOB hierarchy, and does not in any way suggest compromise or betrayal of the struggle as being insinuated by some uninformed fellows and agent of provocateur. “Those trying to misconstrue the action of DOS or twist it for ulterior motives may have lost focus of the ultimate objective of the struggle. The derogatory attacks on DOS and leadership over this strategic decision are not only embarrassing but very unfortunate. “How can anyone in his/her wildest imagination contemplate that the DOS can take any action that will or be induced by anybody to sabotage the Biafran struggle? “This great IPOB worldwide family, has an undisputable leader in the person of leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his order is final. The Directorate of State cannot in good conscience wilfully disobey our leader’s order and at the same time expect Biafrans to obey instructions emanating from the DOS. “The DOS does not mind being insulted by Biafrans, but one thing that needs to be made clear to IPOB family members worldwide, friends and detractors alike is that the Directorate of State of the Indigenous people of Biafra cannot by any stretch of imagination be compelled or bamboozled into disregarding or disobeying a direct order from our leader. “Those outside the leadership can never know more than the leaders. What is expected of every IPOB family member and Biafrans at this point is loyalty and consistence. The DOS knows what is at stake, understands the terrain and can never betray the trust reposed on it by the leader of this great movement and by Biafrans. “The adjustment of the sit-at-home is sacrosanct because the order of leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must be implemented fully. Biafrans and residents of Biafra land are therefore free to go about their legitimate businesses every Monday without fear, intimidation or molestation by anybody. Sit-at-home will be observed only on days our leader will appear in court, and on such other days our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will give the order.”

“A hungry doctor is dangerous’ — NARD appeals to Nigerians for understanding over strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has appealed to Nigerians to bear with them as regards the ongoing strike embarked on by its members. The doctors had commenced an industrial strike on August 1 over “irregular payment of salaries”, among other issues. Efforts by the house of representatives to reach a new agreement between the federal government and NARD, after a meeting on August 10, ended in a deadlock. Thereafter, the federal government dragged the association before the National Industrial Court. The association, in a statement signed by Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, NARD president, said it was aware of Nigerians suffering owing to the strike action, blaming it on the federal government’s “insincerity”. “Good afternoon Nigerians, I want to deeply on behalf of all resident doctors in Nigeria thank you wholeheartedly for the show of love and empathy towards our cause,” the statement, dated August 16, reads. “We are not unaware of the sufferings you all are going through due to government insincerity of purpose. “It is one hundred and twenty days (120) today since we headed your call to call off our industrial action following government memorandum of action. It is five (5) years and eleven (11) months since we signed the memorandum of terms of settlement (MOTOS), yet Government has reneged. “As you are aware, today, the Government sued us to the National Industrial Court for adjudication. As a law-abiding association, we were in court as summoned, but the ministry of Labour was absent, and only the ministry of Health was present representing the federal government. The case was adjourned to 15th September 2021. “We once again appeal to Nigerians to bear with us, because a hungry doctor is a dangerous doctor. We are hopeful the Government shall do the needful as it pertains the welfare of our members, thus curbing the ugly incidence of brain drain. Together we can. God bless the beautiful people of Nigeria.”

Petroleum Act Will Help Regulate Environmental Hazards – Uzodinma

Governor of Imo State Hope Uzodinma has said that the signing of the Petroleum Industry Bill 2021 into law will help to regulate environmental hazards such as oil spillage. “All the hazards that follow the production of oil, mostly environmental hazards, are as a result of the absence of regulatory environments,” he said on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday. “These laws when put in place, will not only regulate the environment but will also create room for value addition both in the oil-bearing communities, the oil-producing companies and government royalties. So, it is going to be a value chain. The benefits are going to be so enormous”. The Governor commended President Buhari for signing the bill into law, noting that it had been a struggle over the years. “I must say that the enactment and signing to law of the Petroleum Industry Bill by Mr President is a very welcome development for which we must congratulate him. “Recall that the past assemblies even before I joined the senate during the 7th National Assembly, made efforts to amend the Petroleum Act which was enacted in 1969 which also became analog but it has not been possible. That the President has been able to break this jinx is a welcome development for which we must congratulate him”. The oil-producing states in Nigeria are Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Ondo, Abia, Imo and Lagos. According to a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina on Monday, the President signed the bill into law while in quarantine, after his arrival from the United Kingdom. “The ceremonial part of the new legislation will be done on Wednesday, after the days of mandatory isolation would have been fulfilled,” the statement said. The Petroleum Industry Act provides legal, governance, regulatory and fiscal framework for the Nigerian petroleum industry, the development of host communities, and related matters. The Senate had passed the bill on July 15 and the House of Representatives followed suit on July 16. The act is expected to replace the obsolete Petroleum Act of 1969. With the passage of the bill, three per cent will now be allocated to host communities from the oil companies in those communities. The percentage has, however, remained a subject of heated debate with many saying it is too little. The three per cent is different from the 13% derivation fund which is paid to oil-producing communities from the federation account.

Plateau killings: Anyone rushing to bail suspects will be arrested, says Lalong

Simon Lalong, governor of Plateau, has ordered that anyone who “rushes to bail suspects” linked to attacks in the state will be arrested. The governor stated this on Tuesday at an emergency meeting on peace and security with stakeholders in Jos According to NAN, the meeting focused on the August 14 incident and other attacks in Bassa, Jos south, Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs. On August 14, a total of 22 people were killed, while several others sustained injuries when suspected hoodlums attacked Muslim worshippers travelling along the Rukuba road in Jos north LGA. While expressing concern over the recent attack, Lalong said serious action would be taken against persons found culpable, while victims will receive compensation. “The rush to bail suspects of unrest when arrested for investigation frustrates efforts to find lasting solution to insecurity in Plateau. Henceforth, people rushing to bail suspects will also be arrested,” he said. “If you find them, please arrest them. If people rush to bail them, arrest them.” He said that such action would deter people fond of bailing suspects of unrest, alleging that some persons could be sponsors or accomplices to such crimes. Lalong noted that the meeting with critical stakeholders comprising former governors, political leaders, traditional and community leaders, was to seek their views on measures to end the cycle of violence in Plateau. According to the governor, insecurity, particularly in some LGAs, requires concerted efforts toward lasting peace. “We cannot afford to fail the upcoming generation by refusing to do the needful,” he said. The governor also expressed concern over the misuse of social media platforms to cause tension through the spread of fake videos and messages. “Such fake messages only ignite further attacks. I have directed the security agencies to go after such persons and ensure they face the law for incitement and hate speech,” he said Addressing religious leaders and other stakeholders, the governor urged them not to incite their followers with sermons or comments on insecurity, noting that they (clerics) are also guided by the constitution. “In future, defaulters will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he added. The governor also warned against protests, noting that such actions could trigger violence

Why IPOB’s Sit-At-Home Order Records Compliance In Southeast – Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has said that people in the southeast comply with the sit-at-home order by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) due to fear of being attacked. Umahi, who was furious over the order and its economic impact on the zone, called on security agencies to step up their surveillance. The governor spoke on Tuesday evening during a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a double-lane flyover, which, the state government said, would be named after the retiring Catholic Bishop of Abakiliki, Most Rev. Michael Okoro. The flyover would be constructed at the popular Hausa Quarters Junction along the Afikpo-Abakaliki highway. “We ask the security chiefs both in the state and in the nation to step up vigilance against the sit-at-home order of the IPOB. “People are not coming out, not because of obedience but because of fear, everybody wants to work and do business but it is out of fear. “We do not know what we are doing to ourselves. I got a text message saying that the only way we can appreciate the killing of three million Igbos is to kill more. “Another was saying that we will work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays and we should give out Mondays. “That is very horrible. The southeast people must rise up to say no to this madness,” the governor said. Umahi expressed worry that the southeast’s economy was being grounded gradually due to crisis, warning that civil servants or contractors that observed the order would be punished. “Have you ever thought of how we are killing ourselves in the pretence that we are fighting? “This is very dangerous. I said that any civil servant or contractor who fails to come to work on Monday will fulfil his salary or position. “We cannot fold our hands in our own time to allow southeast to be destroyed. “We must ask those who said they are fighting for us if they are truly fighting for us or for themselves. “Igbo man is not known for killing themselves but for work. The governors know that those people that are being killed are our brothers and sisters,” he added.

Hushpuppi: Special investigation on DCP Abba Kyari yet to submit report -NPF

The Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation on DCP Abba Kyari says it has yet to submit its report. The NPF made this known via its verified Facebook page on Tuesday night. Signed by the Force Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, DCP Frank Mba, the post was titled, ‘NPF SPECIAL INVESTIGATION PANEL ON DCP ABBA KYARI YET TO SUBMIT REPORT,’ and states, “The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public that the probe into the alleged indictment of DCP Abba Kyari by the FBI, being conducted by the NPF Special Investigation Panel (SIP), is still ongoing. “Members of the public are enjoined to note that the panel has not submitted its report to the Inspector General of Police, as being wrongly reported in some news outlet and online platforms. “The Force hereby reassures the public that the outcome of investigations by the probe panel would be communicated accordingly upon conclusion of the investigations.” Late last month, the United States Attorney’s Office at the Central District of California had ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to arrest DCP Abba Kyari. He has since been suspended from office, pending the outcome of the Force investigation. DCP Kyari is being wanted for his alleged role in a $1m scam allegedly perpetrated by suspect Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpuppi, and four others. The court’s Director of Media Relations, Thom Mrozek, confirmed this to our correspondent in an email inquiry. “A U.S. Magistrate Judge has issued arrest warrants for the defendants in the case, including Mr. Kyari. This is standard operating procedure in nearly all of the criminal cases filed by this office,” Mrozek stated. Also on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, CP Frank Mba, confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force had also received “allegation and indictment processes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation” against Mr. Kyari. The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has since ordered an internal review of the allegations. Mba, in a Press statement on Thursday stated, “Sequel to the receipt of allegation and indictment processes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against one of the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Abba Kyari, the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba psc (+), NPM, fdc has ordered an internal review of the allegations. “The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to the pursuit of justice and the strengthening of its professional relationship with the FBI and other international partners. “Further developments on this case will be communicated to members of the public accordingly.” The PUNCH had earlier reported that the court alleged that Hushpuppi used Kyari to arrest and jail a “co-conspirator,” Chibuzo Vincent, after the latter threatened to expose an alleged $1m fraud committed against a Qatari businessman. Kyari, who is popularly known as ‘super cop,’ had received rapid promotions and a commendation from the National Assembly for his exploits in crime-fighting. He has since denied the allegations.

Petrol price remains N162 until… – FG

The Federal Government has declared the pump price of petrol will remain at N162 until it agrees with the Organised Labour for full deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, stated this in a chat with reporters in Abuja. According to him, there is a consensus that the Federal Government should deregulate the sector. He informed President Muhammadu Buhari will speak on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) on Wednesday. According to him, it is now constitutional for Nigeria to deregulate the oil and gas sector. Sylva, who was asked to state the deregulation date, refused to reveal the time. He noted: “I cannot give you a timeline now. But it is not going to be too far from now because we have done quite a lot of extensive work.” The Minister said as soon as the government and the Organised Labour agree on the process of putting infrastructure in place, Nigeria will deregulate. He submitted: “So we will keep it here at N162 within that band now for the time being but we are also in the time at the moment trying to work out to allow the deregulation to come to fruition.” He revealed that the oil industry has cut costs by 5 per cent. His words: “We have agreed between labour and us that we need to put a framework in place for the implementation of deregulation. “More or less there is a consensus across the table now that deregulation is desirable. But how do we achieve it? That is the question now. “But labour and us have agreed on the process of putting the Infrastructure and the process in place. “And once we are able to agree on that process with labour, then we are ready to deregulate. “So we will keep it here at N162 within that band now for the time being but we are also in the time at the moment trying to work out to allow the deregulation to come to fruition. “Because right now we don’t even have a choice any more. It is a matter of law. But we have to ensure that this happens. We have to ensure that the ordinary Nigeria is well catered for before that law is actually operated.” The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, according to him, is actually leading in that process. He said a lot of jobs have been done on the deregulation process.

Spraying naira is unpatriotic, we’ll prosecute those doing it ― CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it will work with the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone found abusing the naira such as spraying the Naira on social occasions is prosecuted. Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Osita Nwanisobi, said in a statement that: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has again been drawn to the activities of persons, who flagrantly abuse the legal tender by hurling wads of Naira notes in the air and stamping on the currency at social functions. “There have also been cases where people mishandle the Naira, deface it, hawk the currency at parties and reject the currency in some instances. It should be stated that, contrary to the practice of these unpatriotic persons, it is neither cultural nor moral, for people to disrespect the currency which citizens trade in. ‌“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (As amended) stipulates that “spraying of, dancing or marching on the Naira or any note issued by the Bank during social occasions or otherwise howsoever shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira or such note and shall be punishable under the law by fines or imprisonment or both. “Accordingly, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is collaborating with the Nigeria Police, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to address the unpatriotic practice. “We therefore warn Nigerians, particularly those at social functions such as birthdays, weddings and funerals, to desist from disrespecting the Naira or risk being arrested by law enforcement agencies. The Naira is our legal tender and symbol of national pride. Let us respect it and handle it with care.”

Abductors Of Zamfara College Students Demand N350 Million

The abductors of the students and staff of the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura in Zamfara State are demanding N350 million for their release. The provost of the college Habibu Mainasara confirmed this to Channels Television on Tuesday. He said a total of 20 people were abducted, including 15 students, 4 staff, and a driver. The gunmen had stormed the institution around 11 pm on Sunday and kidnapped the students and staff of the college. During the attack, the gunmen killed two watchmen and a police officer. In a statement by his spokesman, Yusuf Gusau, on Monday, he condemned the attack on the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bakura. “Governor Matawalle who is seriously saddened with the resurgence of school abduction in the state by recalcitrant bandits is, however, thankful to God for the prompt response of the security agencies to the school to reinforce the already stationed security at the school which also led to the successful rescue of three out of the four abducted staff of the institution,” the statement said. “The governor directed the security operatives in the state to intensify efforts and rescue all the abductees, promising to do everything humanly possible to rescue them unhurt.” According to Governor Matawalle, the state government has continued to strengthen efforts of providing security to all schools across the state since the abduction of the schoolgirls in Jangebe. The governor also made an appeal to residents of the state to remain calm, saying the government was taking all the necessary steps to restore normalcy in the area. He, however, urged inhabitants to cooperate with the security agencies deployed in the area by providing them with useful information that could lead to the rescue of the victims. Governor Matawalle called on the people to intensify prayers for an end to all criminal activities in the state and the nation at large.

Taliban: Afghanistan won’t be used as terror haven… women will be allowed to work

The Taliban says Afghanistan will not be used as a base for terror activities, and women will be allowed to work. Advertisement There have been concerns about the retrogression of gains made on women rights over the past 20 years since the insurgent group took control of Afghanistan over the weekend. The Taliban, when it first took over Afghanistan in the 1990s, barred women from working and attending secular schools; women were also confined to their homes and only allowed to leave in the company of male relatives. But speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday, Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, said the group is committed to the rights of women under Islamic law, and that they will be allowed to work and study “within our framework”. Advertisement “We are going to allow women to work and study within our frameworks. Women are going to be very active within our society, but within the framework of Islam,” Mujahid said. “They are going to be working shoulder to shoulder with us. We would like to assure the international community that there will be no discrimination.” Mujahid further said no one will be allowed to use the territory of Afghanistan for attacks against any nation. Advertisement He said the group will not harm anyone, and that it is mostly interested in restoring peace and progress to the south Asian country. “I would like to assure the international community that nobody will be harmed,” he said. “We do not want to have any problems with the international community. We have the right to act according to our religious principles. Other countries have different approaches, rules and regulations; the Afghans have the right to have their own rules and regulations in accordance with our values. “We will take very serious steps to improve our economy. We want to make sure Afghanistan is no longer a battlefield of conflict. Advertisement “We have pardoned all those who have fought against us. Animosities have come to an end. We don’t want any external or internal enemies.” “In Afghanistan, I would like to assure our neighbours, our original countries we are not going to allow our territory to be used against anybody or any country in the world. So, the whole global community should be assured that we are committed to these pleasures that you will not be harmed.” In a related development, Mullah Baradar, chief of the Taliban’s political office, has arrived in Afghanistan along with other senior persons of the group. Baradar, a co-founder of the Taliban and one of its most senior leaders, has not set foot in Afghanistan in 20 years.
