219 More Boko Haram Fighters, Children Surrendered In Two Days – Army

A photo released by the army on August 16, 2021, shows some of the repentant Boko Haram fighters seated on the floor. The Nigerian Army says 219 more Boko Haram fighters and children have surrendered to troops in the north-east region of the country. Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday said the feat was recorded over the weekend in Borno State. “The current trend of apprehension in their (terrorists’) camps was further aggravated by the recent alarming turn out of members of the terrorist group, who came out in droves with their families to lay down their arms and surrender to own troops at Mafa Local Government Area on 14 August 2021,” he stated. “A total of 186 Boko Haram terrorist members led by their Amir, Manye Aga, comprising 67 adult males, 54 adult females, and 65 children surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai at Forward Operational Base (FOB) Ajiri. Items recovered from the surrendered terrorists include several AK 47 rifles and magazines, a locally made pistol, and eight locally fabricated daggers. “Similarly, on 15 August 2021, the Theatre took custody of additional Boko Haram fighters, comprising of four adult males, 11 adult females, and 18 children from Landanli, Azah, Ngaridua, and Kondilla villages, who surrendered to own troops of 151 Task Force Battalion, Banki Junction in Bama.” Nwachukwu explained that the feat followed the recent massive surrendering of Boko Haram terrorists in Bama Operational area on August 2 and 4. Since then, he stated that there has been confusion and severe apprehension in the camps of the Islamic State of West Africa Province, especially among its top-ranking commanders over the depleting strength of its members which he said has drastically dwindled their overall fighting efficiency. “It is against the backdrop that the terrorist group opted for the use of propaganda via AMAQ Terrorists Media Wing with the aim to portray the group as if it is still a potent force in the North East,” the army spokesman said. According to him, ISWAP is yet to come to terms with the reality of its current predicament which has posed a serious negative impact on its prowess. Nwachukwu insisted that the terrorists were overwhelmed with palpable fear and were making desperate efforts to halt the surrendering of their fighters from the Tumbus and Sambisa axis. He said the military remained resolute in intensifying both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and sundry crimes in the country.

Saudi Arabia urges Taliban to protect lives under ‘Islamic principles

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has urged the Taliban, who seized Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, to preserve lives, property and security as stipulated by “Islamic principles.” The kingdom said on Monday it stands with the choices that the Afghan people make without interference. Sit-at-home: Miscreants, security agents takeover Aba, Umuahia quiet

Miscreants in Aba reportedly hijacked the sit-at-home order proclaimed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the area. Sources said the order was largely obeyed by residents at Aba and was therefore total, while in Umuahia, the situation was partial and the town was quiet as there were skeletal movements of men and vehicles. Though in Umuahia, no movement of security agents was observed and schools were closed except for those conducting NECO examination for students, in Aba, there were reported clashes where the shooting of a middle-aged man at Gas Line by Express was attributed to a security agent. ‌ The Abia State Government had on Sunday night through an interview granted by the Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, urged the citizens to ignore the order, disclosing that the state government had concluded plans with security agencies in the state to monitor the state and ensure peace. However, even with this assurance, citizens stayed indoors out of fear. A source in Aba said that the miscreants were not members of the IPOB, but those who wanted to take advantage of the situation to harass and rob people. According to the source, “People refused to come out for business Few markets were open but people ignored them. “The miscreants are not IPOB members but some overzealous criminals cashing in on the order to rob people.” Meanwhile, the Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has condemned in strongest terms “the gruesome killing of an unarmed innocent youth at Gas Line by Expressway Aba by Nigerian soldiers”, and called for probe “in accordance with the law of the land.”

Afghanistan: UN Security Council holds emergency meeting

The UN Security Council under India’s current presidency is holding an emergency meeting on the situation in Afghanistan on Monday. The council is meeting for the second time in over a week to discuss events in that country. The longstanding war in Afghanistan reached a watershed moment on Sunday when the Taliban retook the capital Kabul after 20 years. The militants entered the city and took over the presidential palace, forcing embattled President Ashraf Ghani to join fellow citizens and foreigners to flee the country. The UNSC meeting on Afghanistan came as talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Doha stalled. Negotiators representing the national government earlier headed to Doha, Qatar, on Sunday to discuss an agreement with the Taliban’s political leadership. As the situation deteriorates in Afghanistan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the Taliban and all other parties to “exercise utmost restraint.” Mr Guterres said is “following with deep concern” the rapidly evolving situation in Afghanistan and urged the Taliban and all other parties to exercise utmost restraint in order to protect lives and ensure that humanitarian needs can be addressed, a statement by his office said. The UN chief will address the Security Council’s open meeting on Afghanistan on Monday morning, the statement read. “Conflict is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. There continue to be reports of serious human rights abuses and violations in the communities most affected by the fighting,” it said. It added that Mr Guterres was “particularly concerned about the future of women and girls, whose hard-won rights must be protected.” “All abuses must stop. He calls on the Taliban and all other parties to ensure that international humanitarian law and the rights and freedoms of all people are respected and protected,” the statement read. “The United Nations remains determined to contribute to a peaceful settlement, promote the human rights of all Afghans, notably women and girls, and provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and critical support to civilians in need.”

Where the Taliban gets money to fund war in Afghanistan

The Taliban militants of Afghanistan have grown richer and more powerful since their fundamentalist Islamic regime was toppled by U.S. forces in 2001, The Conversation has reported. In the fiscal year that ended in March 2020, the Taliban reportedly brought in US$1.6 billion, according to Mullah Yaqoob, son of the late Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, who revealed the Taliban’s income sources in a confidential report commissioned by NATO and later obtained by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In comparison, the Afghan government brought in $5.55 billion during the same period. ‌ Who funds the Taliban? I study the Taliban’s finances as an economic policy analyst at the Center for Afghanistan Studies. Here’s where their money comes from. Afghanistan accounted for approximately 84% of global opium production over the five years ending in 2020, according to the United Nation’s World Drug Report 2020. Much of those illicit drug profits go to the Taliban, which manage opium in areas under their control. The group imposes a 10% tax on every link in the drug production chain, according to a 2008 report from the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit, an independent research organization in Kabul. That includes the Afghan farmers who cultivate poppy, the main ingredient in opium, the labs that convert it into a drug and the traders who move the final product out of country. Mining iron ore, marble, copper, gold, zinc and other metals and rare-earth minerals in mountainous Afghanistan is an increasingly lucrative business for the Taliban. Both small-scale mineral-extraction operations and big Afghan mining companies pay Taliban militants to allow them to keep their businesses running. Those who don’t pay have faced death threats. According to the Taliban’s Stones and Mines Commission, or Da Dabaro Comisyoon, the group earns $400 million a year from mining. NATO estimates that figure higher, at $464 million – up from just $35 million in 2016. Extortion and taxes – $160 million Like a government, the Taliban tax people and industries in the growing swath of Afghanistan under their control. They even issue official receipts of tax payment. “Taxed” industries include mining operations, media, telecommunications and development projects funded by international aid. Drivers are also charged for using highways in Taliban-controlled regions, and shopkeepers pay the Taliban for the right to do business. The group also imposes a traditional Islamic form of taxation called “ushr” – which is a 10% tax on a farmer’s harvest – and “zakat,” a 2.5% wealth tax. According to Mullah Yaqoob, tax revenues – which may also be considered extortion – bring in around $160 million annually. Since some of those taxed are poppy growers, there could be some financial overlap between tax revenue and drug revenue. The Taliban receive covert financial contributions from private donors and international institutions across the globe. Many Taliban donations are from charities and private trusts located in Persian Gulf countries, a region historically sympathetic to the group’s religious insurgency. Those donations add up to about $150 million to $200 million each year, according to the Afghanistan Center for Research and Policy Studies. These charities are on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of groups that finance terrorism. Private citizens from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and some Persian Gulf nations also help finance the Taliban, contributing another $60 million annually to the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network, according to American counterterrorism agencies. Exports – $240 million In part to launder illicit money, the Taliban import and export various everyday consumer goods, according to the United Nations Security Council. Known business affiliates include the multinational Noorzai Brothers Limited, which imports auto parts and sells reassembled vehicles and spare automobile parts. The Taliban’s net income from exports is thought to be around $240 million a year. This figure includes the export of poppy and looted minerals, so there may be financial overlap with drug revenue and mining revenue. Real estate – $80 million The Taliban own real estate in Afghanistan, Pakistan and potentially other countries, according to Mullah Yaqoob and the Pakistani TV Channel SAMAA. Yaqoob told NATO annual real estate revenue is around $80 million. According to BBC reporting, a classified CIA report estimated in 2008 that the Taliban had received $106 million from foreign sources, in particular from the Gulf states. Today, the governments of Russia, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are all believed to bankroll the Taliban, according to numerous U.S. and international sources. Experts say these funds could amount to as much as $500 million a year, but it is difficult to put an exact figure on this income stream. For nearly 20 years, the Taliban’s great wealth has financed mayhem, destruction and death in Afghanistan. To battle its insurgency, the Afghan government also spends heavily on war, often at the expense of basic public services and economic development. A peace agreement in Afghanistan would allow the government to redirect its scarce resources. The government might also see substantial new revenue flow in from legal sectors now dominated by the Taliban, such as mining. Stability is additionally expected to attract foreign investment in the country, helping the government end its dependence on donors like the United States and the European Union. There are many reasons to root for peace in war-scarred Afghanistan. Its financial health is one of them. (The Conversation)

BBNaija S6: Deputy Boma picks Jackie B as HoH room partner due to Maria’s ban

After emerging as the Head of House for week four, Maria chose Boma to be her deputy. Since Maria has been banned from the HoH room, Boma had to pick a partner to stay with him in the HoH room and Jackie B was the lucky one. The exclusive Head of House room has been well furnished for the HoH and Deputy but last week, Maria was banned for two weeks from the room because she invited Peace and Liquorose against the house rules. This earned Maria, Peace and Liquorose a two-week ban from the HoH room, whether they win the titles or not. With Boma choosing Jackie B as his partner, this would be the second time that the duo would be sharing the HoH room together. When Boma became the Head of House in the second week of the show, he chose Jackie B as his deputy. Hence, the both of them shared the HoH room two weeks ago and will share it again this week. Following the new development, fans have taken to Twitter to react on Boma’s choice. A tweep, @omojuwa, said, “This life ehn. Jackie B was all about Micheal. Then Boma nominated her to enjoy the privilege of power. She accepted without batting an eye lid. The game is the game. When others are playing it, don’t be caught sleeping.” Another tweep, @G_samito, said, “We’re so carried away with Maria and we forgot that Boma is taking Jackie B away from Michael for a week.” “It’s obvious Boma has always and still likes Jackie B,” @_ellen55 said.

Nigeria Silent as Countries Evacuate Citizens from Afghanistan

The Nigerian Government remains silent as countries like the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden, Spain and Canada make frantic efforts to evacuate their citizens from crisis-torn Afghanistan. Replying to FIJ’s enquiry over the government’s plan for Nigerian citizens resident in the country, Abike Dabiri, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, said Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of Public Affairs, would “handle such issues” if the need arose. FIJ made several calls to Onyeama’s phone number but they were unanswered. He has also not responded to the SMS sent to his phone. On Sunday, Taliban insurgents retook Afghanistan’s capital, almost two decades after they were ousted by US troops. Ashraf Ghani, Afghan’s president, also fled the country, abandoning the presidential palace to the fighters. On Monday, videos emerged of military airplanes evacuating Americans from the country. The US Government has also deployed additional 1,000 soldiers to Afghanistan to join the 5,000 military personnel already on the ground in ensuring the successful evacuation of its citizens.
