Police in Zambia appeal for calm as violence erupts

The police in Zambia on Sunday appealed for calm following a spate of violence experienced in some parts of the country following elections held on Thursday. Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo said the police have observed an emerging tendency where violence has erupted as a result of others failing to contain emotions and ending up attacking those seen celebrating the victory of their candidates. “As members of the public continue receiving or waiting for results at different levels, we appeal to them to remain calm and celebrate their victory of their preferred candidates in a responsible and peaceful manner without breaching the peace,” she said in a statement. The police spokesperson said supporters of the ruling and governing party exchanged gunfire in the northern parts of the country on Saturday leaving one person with gunshot wounds, while a similar incident happened in Lusaka, the country’s capital. She added that supporters of the main opposition United Party for National Development, were attacked by supporters of the ruling party as they celebrated the victory of their parliamentary candidate. She said it was unfortunate that some people who had legally obtained firearms had started abusing such firearms whenever they have political altercations. She has since warned people perpetrating violence to desist, failure to which they will be arrested. “We further warn those with intentions of causing violence such as damaging government and private property during or after the electoral process that they risk being arrested and prosecuted,” she added. Zambia held general elections on Aug. 12 in which attracted huge turnouts. However, the announcement of presidential results has been delayed, causing anxiety in the country. The electoral body has since attributed this to the huge turnout of voters, and the large number of presidential candidates. Sixteen presidential candidates participated in this year’s elections. Plateau Attack: Gov Lalong Imposes Curfew On Three LGAs

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has imposed a curfew on Jos North, Bassa and Jos South Local Government Areas following Saturday’s attack on Rukuba Road in Jos North Local Government Area of the state. Twenty-three people – who were travelling from Bauchi en-route Jos to Ikare in Ondo State – were killed in the incident. Twenty-three others were injured during the attack. While the injured are receiving treatment, 26 others were rescued unhurt. The governor, in a statement he signed on Saturday, said the curfew became necessary to avoid an escalation of tension in the affected areas. “In order to avoid further deterioration of the situation and to protect lives and properties of citizens, I have directed the imposition of curfew on Jos North, Bassa and Jos South Local Governments commencing 6pm to 6am from today, 14th August 2021,” the statement partly read. “Having reviewed the reports and monitored the unfolding scenario, the Government is concerned about the persisting tensions and reported attempts by some persons to take the laws into their hands by threatening to attack individuals and private facilities, as well as public property.” Governor Lalong noted that so far, 20 suspects have been arrested, with security agencies conducting investigations to get to the bottom of the matter. He explained that the curfew shall remain in place subject to further review by the State Security Council. Lalong advised residents of the state to abide by the directive to enable security personnel to maintain law and order in the affected areas and deal with those attempting to foment trouble. “While I deeply sympathize with the families of those who lost their loved ones, and those injured in the unfortunate event, I call for calm and appeal to our citizens to avoid any action or utterances that will further inflame the situation. “This is purely criminal conduct and should not be given any ethnic or religious colouration. Let us continue to be vigilant and be security conscious and do everything possible to sustain peace and security of the State,” the governor said. Saturday’s attack has drawn condemnation from leaders across the country including President Muhammadu Buhari who described the incident as “brazen and wickedly”. “With the evident preparedness of their attackers, it is clear this was a well-conceived and prearranged assault on a known target, location and religious persuasion of the travellers not an opportunist ambush,” presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, quoted the Nigerian leader as saying. He also ordered security agencies to immediately swing into action and fish out the perpetrators. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on his part appealed to residents of the state not to take laws into their hands following the attack on indigenes of the state. While he assured that the situation is under control, the Ondo leader urged the people to desist from making hasty generalisations.

EXTRA: Odumeje hits Chris Okotie over attack on TB Joshua

Odumeje, the controversial Onitsha-based clergyman, has slammed Chris Okotie over his recent remark about TB Joshua. TB Joshua, who was the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), died on June 6 after battling a stroke. But Okotie, the senior pastor of the Household of God Church International Ministries, had described him as a deceptive magician in a recent video. He had also claimed that Joshua fulfilled a biblical pattern of “Bar-Jesus”, a false prophet who equated himself with Jesus. Reacting to his claims in a now-viral video, Odumeje described Okotie as a “possessed man who is suffering from insanity.” He had also claimed that Joshua fulfilled a biblical pattern of “Bar-Jesus”, a false prophet who equated himself with Jesus. Reacting to his claims in a now-viral video, Odumeje described Okotie as a “possessed man who is suffering from insanity.” The clergyman wondered why he had a problem with Joshua, who referred to himself as Emmanuel, arguing that Christians are allowed to call themselves such as followers of Christ. “I respect TB Joshua because he was a general. He has finished his job and left the world. I want to correct a stupid person, a man that doesn’t want the general to rest in peace and allow his family to mourn him. That man is Chris Okotie,” he said. “Young man, we have respected you enough and I have never seen you do anything in this life. I have never seen you save any soul or perform a miracle like TB Joshua did yet you came out to say TB Joshua is a devil. You claim because he called himself Emmanuel, he’s a devil. “If he answered the name of Christ, is it wrong? We answer the name of our father but does that we mean we’re Christ? When I look at you, I see that you’re possessed.” The cleric said Okotie has no ground to tackle Joshua in the manner he did, adding that he “needs a dirty slap to correct your senses”. TB-Joshua TB Joshua “And listen to me, when you face the general, before you talk against him, you should establish if you’re equal,” he added. “When you cannot do what a man does, you have no right to talk about him because you’re not in the same qualification or spiritual balance. You’re too carnal for who TB Joshua was to open up your mouth. “When I see you saying you want to rule Nigeria, I see that you’re suffering from insanity. You need a dirty slap to correct your senses. “Listen, l don’t reply people with stories, I do that with deadly spiritual weapon. Some men of God call police but I don’t call police or lawyer, I’m a man of power.”

Hushpuppi: Northern Coalition Demands Fairness For Abba Kyari

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has formally written to the United States Embassy in Nigeria, demanding fairness for the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, who was indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Kyari, who was also a former Head, Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), before his suspension, is accused of being bribed by the suspected billionaire fraudster, Abbas Ramon, also known as Hushpuppi. Daily Trust had reported how the four-man panel, being headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike, probed the allegation levelled against the cop. However, the Northern groups in a letter served and received by the American Embassy in Abuja, an acknowledgement copy of which was made available to our correspondent on Sunday, said it was worried by the trajectory introduced around Kyari’s case. It stressed that it did not deny the FBI or any other police organisation to investigate the crimes allegedly committed by the cop but appealed that he should be treated fairly. The petition, signed by CNG’s spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, maintained that a number of “fundamental procedural lapses in the conduct of the investigation which tend not only to threaten the sovereign status of Nigeria but also infringe on its citizen’s rights and civil liberties; threatens the rule of law and confronts the humanity and civilization that the people of the United States of America stands for.” The CNG said it specifically noted that the FBI, an acclaimed American security agency, might invariably have breached the standard legal and diplomatic practice by neglecting to contact either the Nigerian High Commission in the US or the Nigerian authorities through the FBI liaison offices based in Nigeria before going ahead to file for the indictment of a top Nigerian Security Officer. “We also note that the FBI might have breached another fundamental criminal justice procedure by not according Mr Kyari the benefit of being heard before going ahead with the purported indictment by an American Court in the US for an offence purportedly committed in Nigeria, triable under Nigerian laws, by Nigerian courts and on Nigerian land. “A breach of decorum and negligence of procedure might have also occurred when the FBI hurriedly published the purported indictment online without first intimating the Nigerian authorities and hearing the accused’s case,” the petition partly read. The CNG cited Articles 6 and 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right, Section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights which affirms that everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to the law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence. It reminded the US that its bilateral friendship with Nigeria is guided by the principles of sovereignty, promotion of peace and the standards that guide legitimate interference, warning that their intervention, exclamations and actions should not be drawn to discountenance the right of the Nigerian state to protect the legal rights of its citizens.

Though the extremist group has said that it intends to take the city peacefully without harming civilians, several reports reveal that citizens and foreigners are fleeing the city, from people queuing at ATMs to withdraw money to helicopters evacuating staff from the U.S. Embassy. An Afghan MP in Kabul, Farzana Kochai, told BBC that there were not many routes left to escape, as flights from the country were all filled. “I don’t know, they can’t go anywhere, there’s nowhere left. The aircraft may be full and the flights from Kabul today, I checked with some friends who are going there, out of Kabul, like to India or any other neighboring countries,” Mr Kochai said. countries,” Mr Kochai said. The extremist group has made major advances across Afghanistan as the U.S. and other countries started withdrawing their troops from the country. The group has taken over most of southern, northern and western Afghanistan.
