EXTRA: Rwanda’s President Slams Arsenal After Loss To Brentford

Rwanda’s leader Paul Kagame on Saturday unloaded on his beloved Arsenal after they opened the Premier League season with a loss to newcomers Brentford, saying Gunners fans deserve better than “mediocrity”. The veteran president and long-time Arsenal supporter tweeted a tirade after Brentford returned to their first English top-flight season for 74 years with a 2-0 win over the Gunners on Friday evening. Kagame, whose country is an official sponsor of Arsenal, said Brentford deserved the win but the Gunners had soul-searching to do. “The game itself aside Arsenal and the fans don’t deserve to kind of get used to this….NO !!! I say this as one of the big fans of Arsenal. The change has taken to long to come!” the president tweeted in a three-part post-match screed to his 2.4 million followers early Saturday. Kagame, a former rebel leader who has ruled Rwanda since the aftermath of the genocide in 1994, hammered club management over planning and questioned decision-making around the acquisition of new players. “We just must NOT excuse or Accept mediocrity. A team has to be built with purpose to win win win. So that when we lose….it was not to be expected!” Kagame said. “I am sure we all know on whose shoulders the heaviest burden rests. I hope they know too or even accept it!!!” Rwanda became the official tourism partner of Arsenal in 2018, with players sporting a “Visit Rwanda” logo on their shirt sleeves during matches. The three-year deal was aimed at drawing tourists and investors to the tiny east African nation, and burnishing its reputation as a safe, sought-after destination. Kagame often expresses his opinions about the club’s performances during summits and on social media. AFP

Senatorial Seat: Stephen Odey Loses To Jarigbe Agom Again

INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return earlier issued to Senator Stephen Odey. Senator Stephen Odey has lost another bid to reclaim his seat as the lawmaker representing Cross River North Senatorial District in the National Assembly. He suffered his second loss on Saturday when the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed his application, asking the court to review its earlier judgement which declared Jarigbe Agom as the right candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the December 2020 by-election in the senatorial district. In its ruling, a panel of five justices unanimously dismissed Senator Odey’s application, saying it was an abuse of court processes. The court also said the appeal was brought in bad faith and ordered him to pay N1 million as a consequential cost to the first, second, and third respondents to the suit. The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, led four other justices to rule on the appeal. On July 30, the appellate court in Calabar declared Jarigbe as the right PDP candidate and the duly elected lawmaker representing Cross River North senatorial district. It set aside the ruling of the National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal delivered on June 18 which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the Certificate of Return earlier issued to Jarigbe and issue the same to Odey. The court had also invalidated the Certificate of Return issued to Odey by the electoral umpire and directed the electoral empire to withdraw it. Dissatisfied with the ruling of the appellate court, Odey approached the Abuja Division of the appeal court to reclaim his seat. He asked the appeal court in Abuja to review and set aside the ruling delivered in Calabar, insisting that Jarigbe did not participate in all the processes that led to the by-election as required by the law. Jarigbe’s counsel, Emmanuel Ukala, on the other hand, cited Order 20 Rule 4 of the Procedural Rules of the appeal court, saying the court cannot sit over an appeal in its own judgment.

IPOB suspends sit-at-home order in south-east

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has suspended its sit-at-home order slated for every Monday in the south-east. IPOB said the sit-at-home order will be reactivated whenever Nnamdi Kanu, its leader, appears in court. The proscribed group had said it would enforce a lockdown every Monday — which it tagged ‘Ghost Monday’ — from August 9, in the south-east until Kanu is released. The sit-at-home order is to protest the arrest and detention of Kanu. In June, Kanu was arrested in Kenya and brought to Nigeria. He was re-arraigned on charges bordering on treasonable felony brought against him by the federal government over his campaign for the separatist Republic of Biafra. On Monday, there were no serious commercial activities across some cities and towns in the south-east following IPOB’s sit-at-home order. The decision of the proscribed group elicited reactions from many stakeholders in the south-east and some said the order would cripple economic activities in the region. During a broadcast streamed across social media platforms on Friday, Chika Edoziem, the group’s head of directorate, announced the new directive. “There has been some discussion whether we must continue our ghost town in Biafra land. I wish to announce this very evening that as directed by the highest command of this movement, our Monday ghost town or sit-at-home in Biafra land stands suspended,” he said. “The weekly sit-at-home in Biafra land stands suspended for now. That means in the coming Monday there would be no sit-at-home in Biafra land. “We must revert our attention to the trial of our leader that is coming up. Our sit-at-home bearing any new information given to Biafrans all over the world. “Our sit-at-home will be on each court date, when our leader will be appearing in court. Before then, we will make that information. Our sit-at-home will be taken place in the next court appearance of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

She continued, “It’s because I mixed my drinks. So it wasn’t good.” Maria went on to list the drinks she had, including Smirnoff and cocktails. Cross answered, “Maybe that’s why. I didn’t even know that you were ‘gone’.” Maria then said that she’s still feeling dizzy and that she’ll just eat some food and go back to sleep. “I’m still ‘there’.
