President Muhammadu Buhari says the federal government and security agencies have handled the prevailing insecurity in the country in a “strong, determined and robust” manner. The president’s comment comes as Kaduna, Plateau and other parts of the country grapple with a surge in attacks, killings, and destruction of properties. Buhari spoke on Friday at the graduation of Course 29 participants of the National Defence College in Abuja. The president, who was represented by Bashir Magashi, minister of defence, said the focus of the government is to promote multi-national, combined, joint and special inter-agency collaborations. “Although the nation is still grappling with the challenges of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, farmers and herder clashes and militancy,” he said. “The responses by my government and security agencies in tackling these threats have been strong, determined and robust in order to enhance security of lives and property of Nigerians. “We consolidated the peace in the Niger Delta and recovered vast territories overtaken by terrorists in the North East. “We are making continuous efforts at consolidating the progress made in improving the enabling security environment for peace and development.” The president assured the troops that their sacrifices would not be in vain. I’m IBB’s ideal presidential candidate for 2023 – Doyin Okupe

Doyin Okupe, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) had him in mind when he described the ideal next president. Babangida last week had said the next president must be an individual who speaks to the citizens, understand the economy and have friends in every region. “I have started visualising a good Nigerian leader. That is, a person who travels across the country and has a friend virtually everywhere he travels to, and he knows at least one person that he can communicate with,” IBB had said. Speaking with Arise TV on Friday, Okupe said IBB “had me in mind” when he listed those qualities. He said: “There’s no local government in this country that I’ve not visited five times. I’m the most fairly well-prepared person to be president. “I think IBB got it right; believe me sincerely. That person should be one person who can pick up his phone and call at least one person in every local government of the country. “That means he must be somebody who has socially interacted across sections of Nigeria and understands the terrain,” the former presidential aide said. “I’m in my sixties, and I believe by what IBB have actually said — I’ve not spoken to him — I have a feeling that he had me in mind. I must be one of the three persons he had in mind. “Believe me, sincerely, there’s no local government in this country that I’ve not visited five times; there’s none. And I’m the most fairly well-prepared person to be President.”

ALERT: Beware of fake voter registration portals, INEC warns

The Independent National Electoral Commission has raised the alarm over the existence of fake continuous voter registration (CVR) portals. In June, the commission launched a portal where Nigerians can register or request to update their voter information before they complete the process physically at designated centres. In a statement issued on Friday by Festus Okoye, INEC national commissioner, the electoral body said its attention has been drawn to the existence of another website different from the original portal. The commission dissociated itself from the website, adding that it did not authorise any organisation to collect details of citizens. “The attention of the commission has been drawn to a post, which is currently being circulated on the social media, about a website for INEC voter registration which is different from the INEC CVR Portal,” the statement reads. “The address of the fake portal is https://register.inec-pvc.online/ with shortened URL as https://bit.ly/INEC-PvcReg2021. “INEC wishes to totally disassociate itself from this website and any activity carried out on it. “The commission states that it has not accredited any agency or organization to capture details of intending voters on its behalf. “The general public is hereby informed that the INEC continuous voter registration (CVR) online portal remains https://cvr.inecnigeria.org.” The commission said it has received over one million applications on the online portal for the CVR exercise.

BBNaija S6: Whitemoney refuses to assist in cooking despite Angel’s request

The kitchen drama in the Big Brother Shine Ya Eye house has taken a new turn as Whitemoney turned down Angel’s request to assist the housemates with cooking in the kitchen. Recall that the Head of House, Pere, on Wednesday suspended Whitemoney from entering the kitchen all through his reign, in a bid to reduce “kitchen monopoly”. However, Angel on Friday begged Whitemoney to assist them in the kitchen but the latter declined the request but gave suggestions when she asked him what they would cook in the house. He said, “You people should cook soup. There’s egusi, there’s okro, and there’s ogbono.” Angel then pleaded with him to help them make the soup but he declined, stating that he’ll not enter the kitchen till there’s a new Head of House. Whitemoney answered, “Anything that’ll make me enter this kitchen again is if the new Head of House comes and says otherwise. Apart from that, I’m not entering the kitchen. Saga even told me that they want to make their chicken if I’ll help them to do it.” When Pere became Head of House, he vowed to keep Whitemoney out of the kitchen because he felt that the latter is using his culinary skills as a strategy to remain relevant in the game. Boma, who was the previous Head of House, placed Whitemoney in charge of the kitchen but on Wednesday, Pere suspended Whitemoney from the kitchen in order to fight against ‘kitchen monopoly’. Fans were enraged about Pere’s decision to remove Whitemoney from the kitchen as they took to Twitter to express their anger. Following Whitemoney’s removal, the Head of House then appointed some housemates to take over the kitchen activities. Boma had earlier complained about food shortage following Whitemoney’s suspension from the kitchen.

I Would’ve Resigned Had Gov’t Paid Ransom For My Release – Niger Information Commissioner

Niger State Commissioner for information, Alhaji Muhammed Sani Idris, who was released on Thursday night by his abductor, has said that his release was miraculous as no ransom was paid for his freedom. This is as the commissioner said he would have resigned as a cabinet member had government paid ransom to the bandits to secure his freedom. The World Bank N24,000 Idris said this while addressing journalists in Minna, the state capital, where he was received by the speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Abdullahi B Wuse, some cabinet members and his family. Narrating his ordeal in the hands of his abductors, Idris said he was the only victim. He said despite the harsh treatment meted against him, he remained resilient and unbroken. “The experience was traumatizing. I came out last night and I spent the night at a hospital for observation and I came in to Minna this morning hale and hearty. “I was the only victim with the bandits and they told me that they see my case as a high-profile kidnapping and they planned for it very well with different people from different teams to ensure that they succeed. “I was not rescued and I didn’t pay any ransom. It was just miraculous. “When they started, they were very hard on me and push me to a limit you never expected human to still be resilient; but I give God the glory, because I remain there as a believer believing that the God I serve will always be there for me. “I was asking them if what they were doing is welcomed in the eyes of Allah, gradually; instead of breaking me, I started breaking them. “After then they started giving me bread and water. they untied me and use the only trampoline they had to cover me during rain while they stayed under the rain. “They began to show concern, I kept talking to them and in the long run, they said I should go and reunite with my family, ” he said. The Commissioner, who commended the state governor for standing by his words of not paying ransom to secure the release of any kidnapped victim, said he was proud to be part of the present government in Niger State. “In fact, the first thing I did when I came out was to send a text to my governor to thank him for having the strength of heart not to allow any state machinery intervene in my release because we took a decision in council that the Niger state Government is averse to payment of ransom to bandits for any situation, for any case and now it happened to me. “They came with recordings where I made statements emphasizing this and reiterating it to them that as a government, in Niger State, we don’t pay ransom to bandits. “I believe that we will succeed. I thank the government for standing by that, they were able to protect the integrity of our government. “While I was there I was thinking of the people and the government of Niger State because I realized that God should intervene and ensure the government does not intervene in my affair. “I prefer to lose my life to take the government to the washes and we succeeded. I came out unscathed aside from the beating and without paying a dime. “People will be surprised but I am a believer. When they captured me, what I did was to remember that God has promised to take us through trials and tribulations and that for those that are able to show resilience and withstand this, he promise us a lot, “he said. According to him, his talk did not go in vain as kidnappers and bandits were shedding tears when he was leaving them. He added, “I held onto the leader and told him that I forgive them for all the humiliations they have taken me through. They began to shed tears and they said that they pray that their meeting with me will be an end point to their banditry.” The Speaker of the House, Wuse, who welcomed the commissioner, said the House had given out resolutions on what the government should do to end kidnapping and banditry in the state. He added that it is left for the government to execute some of the resolutions to end banditry or reduce it.

Ngige: Medical profession in danger — resident doctors trying to play God

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, says doctors tend to go on strike more often when someone from the medical profession holds a political position. Ngige, who is also a medical doctor, said this on Thursday at the 2nd Summit of Medical Elders Forum (MEF) in Abuja. On August 2, resident doctors commenced a nationwide strike over irregular payment of salaries, hazard allowances among other issues. Commenting on the situation, Ngige accused the doctors of competing with God because “God has given us some powers and those powers are near His own”. The minister also said the medical profession is in danger now more than at any other time in its history. He asked the doctors to carry themselves with dignity before claiming that they are not liked. “At no time in the history of medical association am I seeing our association and our profession in danger as I am seeing now. Many people will not see it but from where I am sitting and standing, I can see danger ahead,” Ngige said. ”Doctors should ask themselves questions; why is it that it is when your colleagues are in government that you go on the greatest number of strikes. Some of these colleagues were Presidents, Secretary Generals of NMA and even NARD. “Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, Dr. Isaac Adewole faced plenty of strikes, since our government came I have consolidated four strikes. Something is wrong. “We must start by telling ourselves the truth. You say they dislike doctors, what did you do that they disliked you? Yes, there is peer envy, yes some wanted to study medicine and they couldn’t, we know it, and if you know it, you carry yourself with dignity and humility.”

In summons by her counsel, Timmy Omotoso, she demanded N15 million in damages for her suspension and an immediate reinstatement to school with unfettered access to all services. She claimed the beating resulted in bruises, life-threatening scars and bloodstains on her uniform. She said she resorted to a legal suit after her letters of protest to the wife of Ekiti Governor and some relevant government agencies were not responded to. She added that she was being denied access to the school premises and her class, on the orders of the principal since then. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on May 22, Agenoisa’s father, a Police Sergeant, Elijah, allegedly mobilized four armed policemen to the school to manhandle some teachers for scolding his daughter who was said to have come to school with an indecent hairdo against the school rules and regulation. 2023: Why Igbo presidential aspirants haven’t declared ambition -Ohanaeze

A faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo World-wide has said that many presidential aspirants from South-East are putting finishing tourches to their plans. The group said this while reacting to a comment by a former Works and Housing Minister, Adeseye Ogunlewe, that South-East cannot produce Nigeria’s president in 2023 because they lack unity. Ohanaeze, in a statement by its secretary-general, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, faulted Ogunlewe and accused him of engaing in “fallacies and falsehoods.” The group threatened that blocking the South-East presidential aspirants may lead to seccession and disintegration. Contrary to Ogunlewe’s claims, Ohanaeze said the Igbo are united in its aspiration for the 2023 presidency. The statement read in part, “Ordinarily, we would have ignored the man suffering from mouth diarrhoea, but we call on Nigerians to ignore him, as 2023 is the not about South East but the repair of a country sinking deep into the abyss of disintegration and insecurity. “Ogunlewe is not speaking for “Omo Oduduwa or Yoruba nation” men and women of morality from the South East are supporting and canvassing for the 2023 Igbo Presidency, not the 2023 South East Presidency, the difference between the former and latter is what the likes of Ogunlewe may not comprehend easily.
