Restructure Nigeria now to end agitations for secession, says Anyaoku

Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has called for the immediate restructuring of the country as a way of bringing lasting peace and unity to the country and also to end the current agitations for the independent nations of Biafra and Oduduwa. This was just as he expressed worries at the level of insecurity in the country occasioned by incessant killings, kidnappings and destruction of means of human survival across the country. Chief Anyaoku also called on the government at all levels to deploy more security architecture to checkmate the incessant destruction, kidnapping and killing of Nigerians on a daily basis across the country. ‌ Anyaoku spoke on Thursday at the 10th edition of Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance with the theme: “Leadership and Good Governance in Nigeria,” which took place at Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, the Anambra State capital. According to the elder statesman, restructuring of the country remained the only solution to crisis in the country. “Since I returned to Nigeria in 2002, I have been advocating restructuring of the country which I know remains the only tool to control the multiethnic groups in the country. “What I read on our national dailies every day about the present security situation in Nigeria makes me at my age of 88 years feel depressed even at night. I no longer sleep with my two eyes closed,” Anyaoku said. He urged other well-to-do individuals in the country to help to establish cottage industries at rural areas to curbed youth restiveness. The event was presided over by the former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke.

Bala Mohammed: I’m in talks with stakeholders on contesting 2023 presidential election

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi state, says he is in talks with stakeholders over calls for him to run for the presidency in 2023. The governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed this on Thursday when he received a group of northern youth leaders in Bauchi. According to him, the youth leaders had endorsed him to run for the highest office in the country, but he is yet to make a decision. “Today, I received the Northern Youth Leaders Forum who paid me a solidarity visit at the Government House annex, Bauchi,” he said in a statement. “I appreciated the forum for all they have so far sacrificed in my favour. Their endorsement is an indication that Nigerian youths are ready to contribute to national development. “My gratitude also goes to the forum for finding me worthy of contesting for the Nigerian presidency in 2023. “I assured the group that I am still talking with critical stakeholders to seek their feedback and support, and I will revert in due course.” The governor had come under criticism recently, when he said herders carry weapons because they need to protect themselves. Responding to the Bauchi governor’s comment, Rotimi Akeredolu, his Ondo counterpart, had said Mohammed was unfit for public office. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the presidential election will hold in February 2023.

Nigerian mission in London shut after two officials contract COVID-19

THE Nigerian Mission in London, United Kingdom, has been closed for 10 days as two officials tested positive for COVID-19. One of the officers had gone to the UK Home Office for a meeting on Thursday where a test revealed his status. This prompted the testing of other Mission staff resulting in another positive case. In line with COVID-19 regulation and the need to adhere to the rules and regulation of the host country, the Mission said it will close down for the next 10 days, in order to observe the mandatory isolation of those who were in contact with the affected officials. This was contained in a statement titled, ‘Closure of Nigerian High Commission, London.’ It read, “This afternoon, the Head of Immigration Section and two other officials went for a meeting at the Home Office. “At the entrance, Covid test was administered on them and one of them tested positive to COVID-19. The affected officer immediately isolated while the other officials, who tested negative will also isolate for the next 10 days. “In response to this challenge, the Mission embarked on testing all officials of the Mission, after which another official of the Mission tested positive. “In line with COVID-19 regulation and the need to adhere to the rules and regulation of the host country, the Mission will close down for the next 10 days, in order to observe the mandatory isolation of those who were in contact with the affected officials. “While the High Commission regrets any inconvenience that this may have caused, we solicit the cooperation of the general public.”

Why we asked for suspension of sit-at-home order, by Nnamdi Kanu’s family

The family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has explained why it gave a counter order to suspend the sit-at-home order on Monday. The brother of the leader of IPOB, Emmanuel Kanu, in defending his elder brother Kanunta, who gave the counter order, said he (Kalunta) acted based on instructions from above. “There was an instruction passed to Chika Edoziem in charge of the Directorate of State (DOS) through IPOB lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejimofor concerning the sit-at-home order that it should be suspended for reasons meant to be beneficial to our people. “We’re yet to know why Edoziem could not carry out the instruction. Why did he not do it? In fact, it was that which he couldn’t do that Kanunta did”. He said the family is grateful to what the leadership of IPOB is doing since the arrest of the leader but called for more understanding and circumspect in handling certain issues. He said the family’s position on the sit-at-home order doesn’t translate to abandoning one of IPOB’s strategies in actualising the struggle but a way of giving Biafrans sense of belonging. “We felt by the attempt to adjust the sit-at-home order, the family was not undermining IPOB ideals but trying not to play our already marginalised people especially our children into the hands of our enemy, we needed to give them sense of belonging, particularly our children taking exams. “The struggle is a collective one and we appreciate what everybody is doing to make Biafra a success,” adding it is always instructive for all to work according to instructions. Emmanuel said IPOB would continue to be stronger to face the challenges ahead while wishing its leadership the wisdom to continue to pilot affairs.

PDP asks court to remove Buni as Yobe governor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has instituted a suit seeking the removal of Mai Mala Buni from office as Yobe governor. In the suit dated and filed August 12, the PDP submitted that Buni violated Section 183 of the Constitution, when he accepted to serve as chairman of the caretaker committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite holding the position of an executive governor. The plaintiffs include Umar Damagum, PDP’s Yobe governorship candidate in the 2019 election, and his running mate, Baba Aji. In the suit filed by Emeka Etiaba, their lawyer, PDP insisted that Buni ceased to be a governor from the moment he accepted to act as the caretaker committee chairman of the APC. They, therefore, prayed the court for an order directing the Yobe chief judge or any other senior person next to the chief judge to immediately swear in Damagum and Aji as governor and deputy governor of the state, respectively, having emerged second in the 2019 governorship election in the state. The development comes amid concerns raised following the judgment of the supreme court, which affirmed the election victory of Rotimi Akeredolu as governor of Ondo state. In the 4:3 judgment which upheld Akeredolu as Ondo governor, the apex court raised concern over the competence of Buni to conduct congresses and nominate candidates. Commenting on the development at the time, Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment, said for the party to avoid lawsuits, the APC should immediately suspend the congresses and replace Buni. But the party dismissed his position. Magnus Abe, a former senator and board member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Ovie Omo-Agege, deputy president of the senate, also disagreed with Keyamo’s position. Meanwhile, governors elected on the platform of the APC have asked the Buni-led caretaker committee to organise an elective national convention.

FG Receives 177,600 Doses Of J&J Covid Vaccine

The Federal Government on Thursday took delivery of 177,600 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The single-shot J&J vaccine was acquired through the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT), with support from Afrexim bank. According to the Africa Centre for Disease Control, the vaccines were partly manufactured in Africa. The vaccines are expected to be deployed in hard-to-reach areas, to eliminate the need for travel for a second dose. More of the J&J vaccines are expected in the country. Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said on Thursday Nigeria has procured nearly 40 million doses of the vaccine through AVAT. Nigeria is expected to step up its Covid vaccination program after receiving over four million doses of the Moderna vaccine from the US government last week. Only about one percent of the population has been vaccinated, so far. The second phase of the national vaccination programme is expected to kick-off next Monday.

EXTRA: You Must Ban BBNaija, Students Tell FG

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, has asked the Federal Government to ban the ongoing reality show, BBNaija. This is just as the student organization asked the federal government to put a stop to “illicit shows” on television. It stated this in a statement by its Amir (President) Mallam Miftahudeen Thanni, on Thursday, to commemorate the 1443AH Islamic new year and International Youths Day. He expressed concern over the hosting of the BBNaija show at a location in Lagos, a situation he described as “unfavourable for youths’ development in the state”. This, Thanni said, “will be the best gift to mark international youth day.” According to Thanni, the reality show has emerged as one of the most dangerous distractions confronting youths in the country. He warned that the show would weaken the morality of youths, adding that banning it would send a strong signal to youths that the government promotes modesty. The Muslim students’ leader wondered why the government “pretended” not to know the danger of the “nude, irritating and soul-damaging” programme while some of its officials disturb, harass, intimidate female Muslims who use the hijab. He said, “The show negates everything about morality. It is evil and a danger that could damage the strong moral foundation that many Nigerian societies are known for. It is the worst distraction for Nigerian youths. “This immorality extends beyond just nude dressing to encouraging youths to sell their bodies to get fame and make money. We express our total rejection of the programme and call on the government to ban it. “This indirect porn programme is also giving teenagers a bad orientation that making it in life must come with a price of exposing their bodies, thereby causing high cases of rape in the society.” Miftahudeen called on the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board to live up to their expectations by scrapping the programme on moral grounds. “Relevant broadcast authorities should pay attention to the damaging nature of this programme. It is ruining the lives of youths. If Nigeria is serious about fighting crimes, we cannot afford to leave this kind of programme unscrapped,” he added. Thanni also called on the government to intensify efforts to end insecurity in the country. While congratulating Muslims over the New Year, Thanni commended governors who declared public holidays for Hijrah. He, however, berated the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for not declaring a work-free day.

Police free Youtuber detained for criticising Apostle Suleman’s ‘money miracle’

The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has freed a Youtuber, Israel Balogun, who was earlier detained over allegations of criminal defamation and cyber stalking of the General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Johnson Suleman. The PUNCH had earlier reported that the 38-year-old was interrogated for and later detained after being given stringent bail conditions. Balogun had passed the night in police custody but his lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, while addressing the press on Thursday in Abuja, announced the release of the Youtuber after his detention for over 24 hours. The Youtuber was also seen beside the lawyer during the address. Effiong said, “Finally, we have Mr Israel Balogun here with us. He has just been released from the custody of the FCIID in Abuja over the petition filed by Apostle Johnson Suleman. He had petitioned the police and got him (Balogun) arrested over alleged cyber-stalking and defamation. “He spent the night in custody which was unnecessary “We are not afraid of prosecution; we are not afraid of the powers of the state because my client is on the side of the law.” The lawyer also said his client did not defame Suleman but acted within his “right to freedom of expression”. The PUNCH had earlier reported that Balogun posted a video on his Youtube channel where he showed clips of Suleman declaring to his congregation that angels would deposit money into their bank accounts. The clips were from ministrations of the cleric in Atlanta, United States, and Auchi, Edo State, where worshippers showed their phones to testify to receiving credit alerts in their bank accounts. Balogun described the claims as false and slammed Suleiman. His remarks were trailed by mixed reactions on social media. While some commended Balogun for his boldness, others said he was seeking relevance. Detals later…
