Enugu APC Crisis: Police seal off party secretariat

Enugu Police Command has sealed off the All Progressives Congress (APC) office in Enugu to maintain peace and order in the party and the state. The party leaders and other loyalists were denied access to the office following the crack in the leadership. This followed a vote of no confidence passed in the party’s chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, by 42 members of the State Executive Committee of the APC in Enugu on Wednesday. The committee had accused Mr Nwoye of insubordination to statutory authorities and wanting to balkanise the party at the state level. The committee members had told newsmen at a news conference that their decision was taken on grounds of gross misconduct and disregard to party’s constitution by the chairman. The Deputy State Chairman, Gilbert Chukwunta, on behalf of others said that Mr Nwoye had violated the congress guidelines as spelt out by the Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party. Mr Chukwunta was accompanied to the conference by a number of other executive members notably the State Secretary, Robert Eze, and the State Women Leader, Oby Nwofor. Others were State Youth Leader, Joshua Mamah, the State Financial Secretary, Amaka Adonu, as well as a number of other notable party functionaries. They stated that the EXCO members had come together to rescue the party from its looming dismemberment should Mr Nwoye remain as Chairman. The committee presented the communique to the 42 members of the state executive pushing for Mr Nwoye’s removal after their meeting. The communique detailed a number of his actions ranging from his decision to unilaterally inaugurate ward executives who he hand picked, ignoring those elected by the ward delegates. He said that the inauguration took place even when the results of ward congresses of the party had yet to be ratified by the CECPC. Mr Chukwwunta said that the ward congresses held nationwide and were done within set guidelines issued by the national body following the party’s constitution. He described the exercise in the state as one of the best congresses held nationwide, where all their leaders came together and peacefully elected their ward executives. “Surprisingly, we saw our Chairman, Ben Nwoye, wake up and swear in people who never contested in the congresses. ‘This was happening even when the results were yet to be ratified by the CECPC, even as the appeals committee is yet to commence its hearing. ‘This you will agree with me is a flagrant disregard of the guidelines and capable of causing rancour within the party. ‘This act can reduce our chances of winning the 2023 governorship elections and winning the state in the Presidential elections,’’ he said. They also accused Nwoye of attempting to cause disaffection within the party by encouraging party members to take the party to Court. The state EXCO unanimously moved for his removal and appointed Chukwwunta, the Deputy State Chairman, as Acting Chairman. (NAN)

Twitter Reacts To Nigerian Govt’s Plan To Lift Ban

Social media giant Twitter has reacted to the decision by the Federal Government to lift the ban on the use of its platform in Nigeria. “We recently met with the Nigerian government to discuss why Twitter has been blocked and ways to resolve the matter,” a spokesperson for the microblogging site was quoted as saying by Reuters. “Our aim is to chart a path forward to the restoration of Twitter for everyone in Nigeria. We look forward to ongoing discussions with the Nigerian government and seeing the service restored very soon.” This followed the announcement by the Minister of information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, that the government would lift the ban on Twitter in a matter of days. Mohammed who briefed State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday revealed that the status of the conversation with the social media giant had gotten to an amicable stage. He explained that agreements had been reached in all areas, except three that have been unresolved. One of the pending issues centres on the condition that Twitter establishes a legal presence registered as a Nigerian company with an office address and an employee to serve as a country representative in Nigeria. Although Twitter did not turn down the condition in totality, it insists that the earliest time it can establish a company will be by 2022. insists that the earliest time it can establish a company will be by 2022. Twitter Operations Suspended Before the ban on the microblogging site, millions of Nigerians, including public office holders and institutions make use of the platform for various purposes. Just like every other user expressing a view or sharing information, President Muhammadu Buhari posted a tweet on June 1. The President who received security reports from the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the series of attacks on its facilities had threatened to treat Nigerians “misbehaving” in “the language they understand”. “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigeria Civil War. “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,” the Nigerian leader had said in his tweets. A screenshot of the President’s tweet that was deleted by Twitter. Barely a day after President Buhari tweeted, Twitter took down the post which it said violated its rules. Two days after the microblogging site took down the President’s tweet, the government announced that it had indefinitely suspended Twitter’s operations in the country. The persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence was one of the reasons cited. But the government said it had nothing to do with the deleted tweet. It had also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria. This sparked a widespread outcry from individuals and groups within the country, as well as members of the international community who asked the government to rescind its decision.

A breakdown of the projects include, “the supply and installation of motorised portable hydraulic compressor for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in favour of Messrs Intern Equipment Nigeria Limited in the sum of $502,950 plus N15,800,000,” Mamman said. “The second approval was also received for the award of the contract for the supply and delivery of three sets of online partial discharge measurement and monitoring equipment for the TCN in favour of Messrs T and D Technology Limited in the sum of $874,800 offshore plus N240,100,000 onshore with a delivery period of nine months. “The third approval was the award of the contract for the repairs of 100 MVA and four sets of 60 MVA 132/33 power transformers for TCN in favour of GT Engineering Limited in the sum of $661,220 offshore and N127,758,781 onshore with a delivery period of 12 months. “On the last one, approval was also granted for the contract for procurement of 10 sets of 330 KV and 30 sets of 133 KV circuit breaker for the TCN in favour of Horsepower Engineering Trading Limited in the sum of $502,719 plus N114,571,500 with a delivery period of six months.” FEC had approved the construction of two power substations in Jigawa and Akwa Ibom worth N454 million and US$6.2 million respectively.

Abuja police detain Youtuber for criticising Apostle Suleman’s ‘money miracle

’ The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has detained a Youtuber, Israel Balogun, over allegations of criminal defamation and cyber stalking of the General Overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries International, Apostle Johnson Suleman. PUNCH Metro gathered that the 38-year-old was interrogated for about four hours and later detained after being given stringent bail conditions. Our correspondent learnt that Balogun posted a video on his Youtube channel where he showed clips of Suleman declaring to his congregation that angels would deposit money into their bank accounts. The clips were from ministrations of the cleric in Atlanta, United States, and Auchi, Edo State, where worshippers showed their phones to testify to receiving credit alerts in their bank accounts. Balogun described the claims as false and slammed Suleiman. His remarks were trailed by mixed reactions on social media. While some commended Balogun for his boldness, others said he was seeking relevance. The businessman told our correspondent that he later got a threat call from one Obi-West. “He said he is the eyes of Apostle Suleman on social media and said I should expect to hear from them. He said I will be missing and he will make sure I get punished by officers from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters. “He said killing me is nothing to them. I recorded the whole conversation and used it in recording another video where I called people to rescue me because my life was in danger,” he added. Balogun noted that he received a letter from Suleman’s lawyer on Monday, August 2, 2021, demanding a public apology within seven days. He said, “I was still consulting with my lawyer when somebody called to notify me that some guys from Abuja were in Lagos to pick me up to Abuja. My wife, daughter and I immediately abandoned our home and went into hiding.” The Ogun State indigene said he later received an invitation from the Special Enquiry Bureau, FCIID, Abuja. The invite, signed by one ACP Yahaya Abubakar, asked Balogun to report at the FCIID on Wednesday, August 11, 2021. Balogun’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that the Youtuber had been detained. He said, “The formal interrogation was for about four hours, including the time they used in taking his statements. Part of his bail conditions was to provide two sureties with landed property and certificate of ownership in Abuja, and a Level 14 civil servant with either a letter of last employment or letter of introduction. “We have somebody with CofO, and presented a Level 13 civil servant, which they accepted. But they insisted that the person should bring a letter of introduction, whereas the person has a letter of last promotion. Even though we said we will bring the originals tomorrow, they rejected it and put Balogun in the cell. “The conditions are difficult and unnecessary given the nature of the offence. There is no reason why the police should get involved as he (Suleman) should have gone to court to file legal action if he felt he had been defamed.” A spokesperson for the FCIID, Abuja, Funmi Eguaoje, said the bail conditions were normal. She said, “If you bring a surety that is a civil servant, there should be verification from the office of the civil servant. There should be a letter of introduction from his boss to show that he is a staff member. They should bring it tomorrow (Thursday) and they will release him.” Suleman’s counsel, Samuel Amune, said he only wrote Balogun to recant his statements and apologise for using derogatory remarks. He added that he knew nothing about the petition. Suleman, in a recent video, said he observed that Youtubers usually abused him to gain traffic to their page and make money. He said he had decided to also get paid for the criticism. The cleric said, “Now, when anybody wants to open a Youtube channel or have a blog, one of the strategies to make people get attracted to get lots of views and comments is to attack pastors and I am one of the major subject matters. “I don’t have a problem with that because a million abuses cannot do nothing; but what I have a problem with is that at the end of the month, Youtube is paying you for insulting me. “So, we need to have an agreement, go ahead and insult me but pay me. If you want to insult me, pay me and then do the videos, abuse me; you have my permission because one million videos cannot bring a true man of God down.”

Gani Fawehinmi’s Eldest Son, Mohammed Is Dead

Mohammed Fawehinmi, the eldest son of late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, is died. While details of his death are unclear, Channels Television gathered that he complained of difficulty in breathing on Wednesday morning. He was said to have been taken to the General Hospital in the Gbagada area of Lagos State where he was confirmed dead. Mohammed, who was a lawyer like his father, died at the age of 52. Although the family has yet to put out an official report, a lawyer close to the family explained that this was because Mohammed’s mother had not been informed of his death. Mohammed, a graduate of Business Administration of the University of Lagos (1991), obtained an LLB degree from the University of Buckingham, England, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1998. In 2003, he was involved in a car accident that affected his spinal cord and confined him to a wheelchair. Until his death, Mohammed was a social crusader who commented regularly on issues of human rights violation and the rule of law.

Osinbajo: Great nations are multi-religious, multi-ethnic — Nigeria must remain united

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says the greatest nations in the world are multi-religious and multi-ethnic, and as such, threats to Nigeria’s unity must be resisted. The vice-president stated this on Wednesday, when a delegation of the Arewa Concerned People for National Unity and Religious Tolerance, a non-governmental organisation from Kano, paid him a courtesy visit at the presidential villa. In recent times, secession agitations have heightened in the southern region of the country. Speaking on the development, Osinbajo noted that great nations in the world have witnessed the challenges facing Nigeria, adding that there is a need to prevent threats to the country’s unity. “There is no great nation anywhere that has not had this sort of challenge, especially where you have a multi-racial, multi-religious setup. And the greatest nations in the world are multi-racial, multi-religious, and multi-ethnic,” Osinbajo was quoted as saying in a statement by Laolu Akande, his spokesperson. “As a matter of fact, some of these things are as important as the economy and security… for the reason that a united people, people who see themselves as one, are more likely to be economically successful, more likely to be able to secure themselves and secure their borders, and more likely to work together for the goodness and greatness of their people. “It is the duty of the leadership, not just political leadership, but also the leadership of social groups and organisations such as yours, to ensure that we are focused on these issues of unity and tolerance. “As you know, religious tolerance and unity is, for me, a matter that goes beyond mere advocacy. I believe very strongly that the greatness of nations, wherever those nations may be, have always been on account of leaders who thought it fit to build those nations on the basis of unity and tolerance. “I think that it is such an important issue that we cannot afford to discount it. There is a need for us to pay more time and attention to these issues in whatever way we can because every once in a while, we see some threats to the unity of our country, and we must not allow it to happen at all. “We must continue, not just in the advocacy, but in action that will bring about unity and religious tolerance.”

Hushpuppi: 31 northern lawyers volunteer to defend Kyari against FBI

A group of 31 lawyers from northern Nigeria on Wednesday volunteered to render free legal services to the former commander of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari. Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is facing allegations of corruption levelled against him by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States for which he was suspended by the Police. The spokesperson of the group, Sunusi Bappah Salisu, in a statement said the volunteer lawyers were drawn across all the 19 northern states and religions. According to him, the pro bono was in response to calls for support for Kyari by the Coalition of Northern Groups. The lawyers, he said, had volunteered to render free legal services for the preservation of Kyari’s fundamental rights that might be potentially jeopardized by his alleged indictment by a court in the United States of America. Salisu said they would critically review the procedures adopted by the FBI to get the US Court to indict Kyari on allegations of involvement in charges filed against a suspected fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi. He said, “We would raise questions involving the possibility of breaches to Kyari’s fundamental rights entrenched in Articles 6 and 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right which essentially state that every individual shall have the right to liberty and to the security of his person and every individual shall have the right to have his cause heard.” “Also, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence,” he added.

Ogoni: Shell Petroleum agrees to pay N45.9bn compensation over oil spills

On Wednesday, the Ogoni people of Rivers state received justice when a multi-national oil firm, Shell Petroleum Company, agreed to pay a huge sum of N45.9 billion to the people for the losses incurred during the oil disaster that decimated their towns at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The Ogonis will receive the monetary recompense imposed by a Federal High Court ten years ago through their counsel, Chief Lucius Nwosu. Shell Petroleum Company declared its decision to pay the money to Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court Abuja on Wednesday through its lawyer, Chief A. O Ejelamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The senior counsel asked Justice Mohammed to issue an order allowing payment of the debt to be made through the Chief Registrar of the court into a bank account that would be set up for the purpose. Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja endorsed the final decision to pay the money. Despite the oil company’s attempts to pay through the Chief Registrar of the court, it was eventually agreed that the money would be handed to the persons who had been wronged through their lawyer. On June 14, 2010, Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Lagos division of the Federal High Court granted the amount to the Ogoni people in a suit filed by the Ogoni people. The Ogonis, on the other hand, agreed to forego interest on the principal amount as a compromise during reconciliation

BBNaija Shine Ya Eye: Sammie apologises to Angel after ‘slut-shaming’ episode

BBNaija Shine Ya Eye housemate, Sammie, has apologised to Angel for allegedly slut-shaming her during a heated argument. After the heated argument, Angel had kept to herself throughout Tuesday and slept most part of the day. Sammie, who seemed to be guilt-tripping, decided to clear the air and sort out the issue between them. Sammie approached Angel in the garden on Tuesday night to apologise for his words. “Angel, we don’t have to work out but just know this thing you should understand is that we’re in a game whatever I did or said should not affect your game. “Actually, I don’t know why you’re here but I am here for a reason. It doesn’t matter how it goes with us,” Sammie began. “I don’t want to think that you’re sleeping all day because of me or you have your own issues. I don’t want to know if it’s the period, it’s me or it’s because of what I said. “If you’re like this because of what I said I’m sorry and yesterday was the first time I heard the word ‘slut-shaming’. “I’ve had a lot of female friends but I hardly ever get into a fight with them that I’ll end up insulting them.” On slut-shaming, he said: “I did not slut-shame you, I fell for you not because of your tattoos or the way you dressed. Falling for you was progressive. “We spoke and I watched you speak. I didn’t fall because of your body, I fell because of your personality. If you felt I slut-shamed you, then I’m sorry.” On Monday night, August 9, Sammie and Angel got into an argument after Sammie confronted her over a Truth or Dare game, where she kissed one of the four new housemates, Kayvee. Angel after the confrontation accused Sammie of slut-shaming her.

JUDGEMENT ANALYSIS: Appeal Court Kano, did not declare Soludo APGA Guber Candidate

By Ibe Pascal Arogorn The appeal court sitting in Kano has never declared Prof Chukwuma Soludo as APGA guber candidate nor Victor as APGA national chairman, Crimefacts.news can authoritatively report. Recall that reports on Tuesday claimed the judgement at court of appeal Kano restored Soludo and Victor Oye as APGA candidate and national chairman respectively. However Crimefacts.news exclusively gathered that the Appeal court only set aside the judgment of Jigawa High Court for not giving Oye fair hearing without making any consequential order on APGA Leadership tussle. Courts documents seen by Crimefacts.news showed that Chuma Umeoji is still the APGA candidate for Anambra gubernatorial election on November 6. WHY UMEOJI IS STILL APGA CANDIDATE AND OKEKE JUDE APGA CHAIRMAN . With the setting aside of Jigawa State High Court Judgment, there is still the valid pending latest judgment in time which is Imo State High Court Judgment (State where the the Convention held ) which has declared APGA Owerri Convention authentic, declared Jude Okeke APGA Chairman and Also declared Chukwuma Umeoji APGA Candidate and ordered INEC to Publish his name and never remove. Until there is a higher Court judgment that declares Oye Chairman or Soludo candidate, INEC cannot remove Chukwuma Umeoji because there is no order directing INEC to do so. See the below documentary evidence (CTC of Kano Appeal Court order which didn’t declare Oye Chairman or Soludo candidate and the Owerri Court Order which declared Umeoji candidate and ordered INEC to Publish him as APGA Candidate)to prove the above facts
