BREAKING: FG to lift Twitter’s suspended soon

The Federal Government has said it will lift its ban on Twitter, in a matter of days. Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed announced this on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. Mr. Mohammed disclosed that the status of the conversation with the microblogging site has reached an amicable stage, with agreements reached in all areas except three. The remaining three unresolved areas, according to him, are simply a matter of ‘when and not ‘if’ there would be an implementation of conditions discussed. One of the pending issues according to the minister is in relation to the condition that Twitter establishes a legal presence in Nigeria, registered as a Nigerian company with an office address and an employee to serve as a country representative in the country. While not turning down the proposition in totality, the micro-blogging site has maintained that the earliest it can establish a company is in 2022. The Federal Government suspended Twitter’s operations in June after the social media platform deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari for breaching the site’s rules. The federal government explained at the time that the suspension had no correlation with the deletion of the President’s tweets.

BREAKING: Court Declines Okorocha’s Application To Stop Confiscation Of His Properties

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday declined an application by former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha asking it to restrain the Imo State Government and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from confiscating his properties. A State High Court in Owerri had earlier (on Monday) ordered the final and absolute forfeiture of Royal Palm Springs Hotel and other properties said to belong to Senator Okorocha and other members of his family. According to a ruling by Justice Fred Njemanze, who was sitting as a vacation judge, Okorocha’s counsel failed to give concrete and verifiable reasons why a final and absolute forfeiture order should not be given in favour of the Imo state government. Justice Njemanze added that the suit filed against the state government by Okorocha’s counsel was not properly filed. He also described it as a surplusage, a term in law which means a statement completely irrelevant to a matter. Justice Njemanze maintained that the White Paper Gazette by the state government is a legal binding document. The judge concluded that there was no concrete reason before it for why the forfeiture should not be made absolute and final, hence the state government could go ahead and do whatever it deems fit to do with the properties. As for persons who might have made purchases on such properties, Justice Njamanze said they are at liberty to approach the court to prove their titles.

BREAKING: Gunmen Kidnap Former Councillor’s Wife, Baby In Zamfara

Gunmen have kidnapped the wife of a former councillor Hassana Saudaki and her eight-month-old baby in Zamfara State. Her husband – Babangida Damba – the former councillor of Tudun-Wada Gusau ward – explained that the incident occurred on Wednesday when gunmen invaded their residence at the Government Residential Quarter in Damba, shooting him and his 26-year-old wife. He told Channels Television that the gunmen who were about four started their operation from 12: 00 am shooting sporadically for over one hour, before leaving with his wife and son to an undisclosed location. The victim’s husband said he put a distress call to the police immediately to come to his rescue but they did not show up until 3:00 am after the criminals had long gone with his wife and son. Damba said he recovered 17 used ammunition and one live ammunition which the gunmen fired at the main door of the house to force it open to access the sitting room. Kidnapping and banditry have become common occurrences in Zamfara State. Hundreds of students have been abducted from their schools in the northwestern state, sparking fears among residents. Some of them were later rescued. High-profile personalities have also been abducted in the state. While the state government had admitted that insecurity has worsened in the state, it blamed past governments for failing to resolve the security challenges – especially clashes between herders and farmers.

Nigeria’s major airports not designed for international operations –FG

The four major airports in Nigeria located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano were not designed as international facilities, the Federal Government said on Tuesday. Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said this was why the facilities had been put up for concession, adding that the airports were operating below expectations. Sirika disclosed this at a stakeholders’ webinar during his presentation on Nigerian Airport Concession Strategy. In June, The PUNCH reported that the Federal Government had put up the Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano airports for concession for a minimum of 20 years. It provided the explanation in a document on frequently asked questions about airport concession released by the Federal Ministry of Aviation. In a document on the status of the road map/public private partnership projects concession of airports made available to our correspondent, the government named the airports/parts that were up for concession. They include the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos: international and cargo terminals; and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja: international, domestic and cargo terminals. Others include the Port Harcourt International Airport, Port Harcourt: international, domestic and cargo terminals; and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano: international, domestic and cargo terminals. Speaking on the objectives of the concession project at the webinar on Tuesday, Sirika said, “The airports in Nigeria are currently operating in a suboptimal environment, most notably due to factors that will have to be improved as part of the public private partnership programme.” He stated that there was an urgent need for infrastructure investments and modernisation as all airports required investments in runway maintenance, navigation aids as well as terminal facilities. The minister said, “There is relatively low asset utilisation due to the limited opening hours of other smaller Nigerian airports; lack of terminal capacity as the airports fall short of gates, stands and check-in desks. “The airports have not been designed as international hubs but operate separate international and domestic terminals.” On transaction advisers for the project, Sirika named them to include Infrata, Dentons, Proserve, Ciena, and Templars, describing them as reputable firms that would advise the Federal Ministry of Aviation. He said the concessionaires would provide the investment required to upgrade the existing terminals, take over the new terminals and maintain them over a period of time to be determined based on financial assessment of each transaction.

I considered leaving PDP -Bode George

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, says he almost left the opposition over the alleged poor management of the party. He alleged that the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus-led national working committee turned the party into a “private company“ The PDP Board of Trustees member, however, said he had no intention to join another political party after leaving the opposition party. The politician explained that he was prevailed upon not to leave the party by some stakeholders and elders of the party. There is a crisis rocking the opposition party as political bigwigs in the party jostle for shares of its structure ahead of the 2023 polls. The PUNCH had reported that Secondus was battling to retain his chairmanship position as Wike spearheaded moves to ensure his removal before the party’s national convention. During a meeting was summoned by the Board of Trustees to find an amicable solution to the crisis rocking the party, there was a clash between Secondus, and the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike. Governors and elders of the party later met and shifted the national convention of the party to October to pacify the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and his supporters who were insisting on Secondus’ resignation. APC urges Delta retirees PDP targets 40m members, launch e-registration One more abducted as Ekiti APC, PDP continue verbal war Recall that a 35-member elders’ committee was on Thursday set up by the party’s Board of Trustees following calls by some members of the NWC for the chairman’s resignation on the grounds that he was plotting his re-election. George, who spoke on Channels Television, said: “As an elder, as a leader of this party, and as somebody who served for ten years at the NWC, I saw the platform of our party wobbling. You cannot do anything meaningful when your party is not stable. “What I will tell Nigerians is this: today is a special day in the annals of the PDP’s history. “That the elders, having considered, having seen what is going on in the party, decided to save the party because the founding fathers have a certain mission and that mission is so vital for the Nigerian state. We have been giving very adequate solid issues on national matters and we did it. “It (PDP) became so petty and so rowdy. When you disregard the ground norm, the constitution of the party, then what are you doing? You are translating it as if it is your private company. “We saw this and I won’t like to go further into the debris and filth. “The way they were managing the party fell short of seriousness. So as a concerned member, I was thinking that I should leave the party and go home and rest because I won’t join any party after PDP.”

Over 112 Killed In Kaduna And Plateau In A Month – Amnesty International

At least 112 persons have been killed and about 160 kidnapped following bloody attacks in Kaduna and Plateau states within the last one month, Amnesty International has said. According to a communique on Tuesday, the rights organization attributed the deaths to failure on the part of Nigerian authorities to live up to their obligation to protect the right to life. Amnesty International stated that the authorities’ failure enabled a month of bloody attacks on both farmers and herders, in parts of Kaduna and Plateau states. “At least 112 people were killed, 160 abducted and thousands displaced in communities in Kaduna and Plateau states from July to 5 August 2021. “Our findings show that despite clear signs that there will be retaliatory attacks, enough is not being done to prevent the bloodshed, thereby fueling the ongoing circle of violence. Beyond issuing statements and condemning attacks after they happen; government needs to rein in on attackers and bring suspects to justice,” said Osai Ojigho, Director Amnesty International Nigeria. The NGO’s further noted that its investigation shows at least 78 people were killed and 160 abducted by bandits between 3 July and 5 August 2021 in Kaduna state including 121 school children of Bethel Baptist Church High School. The communique adds that no fewer than 34 persons lost their lives in Plateau state, including 7 herders who were attacked on 1 July at Dogon Gaba and 2 others who were lynched at Fusa Village while trying to locate their missing cow. “Villagers from farming communities, informed Amnesty International that, innocent people and communities that know nothing about the attacks are sometimes targeted for reprisal. “A retaliatory attack on 31 July and 1 August 2021, led to the killing of at least 17 people, and displacements of hundreds in farming communities in Bassa and Riyom LGAs, Plateau state,” the statement reads in part. A 39-year-old farmer is said to have informed Amnesty international that: “We have been hearing gunshots in our village since Monday after the attack. We don’t know why we were attacked, I had to relocate to the IDP camp with my family”. Leaders of some Fulani herders’ community in Plateau state told Amnesty International that the inaction of the security officials contributed to the recent retaliatory attacks in the state. “The slow and ineffective response by security officials is contributing to the attacks and reprisal in the state, people are getting away with crimes,” the agency added. While emphasizing that Nigerians have a right to be protected by the government, the non-governmental body urged the authorities to “act swiftly to prevent such attacks from happening,” adding that “the slow response from security forces is clearly causing increased casualties”. AI wondered how much longer the people must be forced to live in fear as such brutal attacks continue. Herders and farmers’ clashes have lingered for quite a while in Nigeria, especially in the north where the two groups battle over access to resources including water, land and pasture. The conflict has become perpetual, and Amnesty International blames this on the failure of the Nigerian government to investigate, arrest and prosecute perpetrators.

Court remands man for defiling his three daughters

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded a 43-year-old businessman, Emeka Orisakwe, who allegedly defiled his three daughters. The police charged Orisakwe, who resides at Maza Maza, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos State, with sexual assault. Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Orisakwe’s plea, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. Kubeinje directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. She adjourned the case until Nov. 2 for DPP advice. The Prosecution Counsel, ASP. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section attracts life imprisoment for penetration sexually through the vagina.

Akintoye, others to lead one million-man march to UN General Assembly

Eminent leaders of thought from the South and Middle Belt of Nigeria, under the aegis of Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination (NINAS), on Tuesday said they hold a one million-man march in front of the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, the United States from September 14 to 21, 2021 to demand a referendum on self-determination and abolition of the 1999 Constitution. Communications Manager to NINAS, Mr Maxwell Adeleye, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in reaction to a trending statement by a faceless group demanding the ban of Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO) from making a presentation before the upcoming UNGA parley. Adeleye said NINAS will not be making any official presentation at UNGA but “will be holding a one million-man march opposite the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the United States from 14th to 21st September 2021,” disclosing that the march will be led by a renowned historian, Prof. Banji Akintoye, Prof. Yusuf Turaki, Secretary-General of NINAS, Barr. Tony Nnadi; Prof. Wale Adeniran, who is National Chairman of Ilana Omo Oodua, among others. It would be recalled that the listed NINAS leaders are those who signed the Constitutional Force Majure (CFM) declared on 16th December 2020, rejecting the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and calling for a UN-supervised Referendum. Adeleye said NINAS, the umbrella body of leading regional self-determination groups in the South and Middle Belt of Nigeria with Ilana Omo Oodua representing the Yoruba blocs, Lower Niger Congress representing the South-South and South East and Middle Belt Forum representing the Middle Belt blocs, shall be calling on all indigenous people from the South and Middle Belt around the world to unite and stand together in solidarity in their demand for the restoration of their sovereignty, their inalienable right to their self-determination, their assets and right to freely choose their association with any state. According to him, the freedom march will feature a demand from the UN to send a peacekeeping force to Nigeria to save the embattled indigenes who are being daily massacred by Fulani herdsmen and other terrorists, including Boko Haram and ISIS operating with impunity. “We have read a trending statement authored by a faceless group demanding for the ban of Ilana Omo Oodua from making a presentation before the world at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). “We wish to say very expressly that Ilana Omo Oodua, contrary to media reports, will not be making any official presentation at UNGA. “What will be happening at UNGA is that the members of Ilana Omo Oodua under the leadership of Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye alongside other members of NINAS from the Lower Niger and Middle Belt of Nigeria will be holding a One Million March opposite the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the United States from 14th to 21st September 2021 to demand a referendum to decide on the rights to self-determination of the people who want an end to unitary systems of Nigeria which has been turned into an apartheid state. “We shall also be demanding, first and foremost, for the abolition of 1999 Constitution of Nigeria which we have shown to be a fraud perpetrated against the people of the South and Middle Belt of Nigeria given that the people did NOT make it,” the statement read. Speaking further, Adeleye said NINAS was already “mobilising all sons and daughters of the Lower Niger (South East, South-South), South West and Middle Belt’s clans living in the United States of America to stand up for their Indigenous Nationalities by participating in the one week one Million March for the liberation of their people.” “The planned march shall be historic and epoch-making. We want the whole world to see the level of injustice, oppression and intimidation currently going on in Nigeria. The time is NOW!” the statement said.

BBNaija S6: Why I don’t have a varsity degree – Whitemoney

Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye housemate, Whitemoney, has revealed his reason for not having a university degree. In a conversation, monitored by our correspondent on Wednesday, day 18 of the show, Whitemoney told JMK that he doesn’t have a degree because he didn’t have the opportunity to go to the university. The discussion ensued as the duo got to know more about themselves. Along the line, the issue of marriage surfaced and Whitemoney said that when it comes to marriage, he doesn’t care about the tribe but he wants a smart and educated woman. He said, “I want a smart woman because I didn’t go to school. I am smart but I didn’t go to school. I don’t want a situation whereby my children will ask me about their assignments and I’ll be lost. “When they come, I’ll tell them ‘go and meet your mother’. My own is to make money. I don’t know how to solve maths.” When JMK asked him about his family, he revealed that he has two brothers and no sister, adding that his siblings are ‘big men’ who have so many certifications. “Any degree you want to talk about, they have them. As for me, as I managed to finish my NECO, I said, ‘To God be the glory’, Whitemoney said. JMK then asked how he was able to escape going to school like his brothers. Whitemoney answered, “I didn’t escape it, I just didn’t have an opportunity to go. That’s just it. But it didn’t stop my limit. It didn’t stop me from achieving things. “I’m well outspoken if I want to speak. I speak it without any ‘comma’. I write too. That’s the basic thing. Every other thing is extra. I pay you to do it.”
